That's the correct view of donations. How someone should be thanked for their donation must entirely depend on their own net worth. It is nothing for billionaires to donate several million dollars. Rich people donate as PR. There are a lot of imb*ciles who praise rich people for donating. For them the money they donated is nothing while there are tons of losers who view them as gods and because of donations are willing to swallow their propaganda and fight for the very system which allows the rich to get richer over the backs of the normal working people.

@@smrtfasizmu6161 If you are not baiting, I'd be heavily assuming you view donations as a virtue. The problem with that view is that it uses fundamental ethical axioms that are based on literally nothing. Altruism is a baseless ethical pillar (mainly seen in Christianity but also in pretty much every religion and philosophy out there). It has no epistemological foundation to stand on. It's just a fallacy. You shouldn't praise or shame rich people for helping unless it's directly helping you in some form because donations/philanthropy is fundamentally neutral. It's a choice to do something with your property just like any other choice. Donating to charity versus buying an ice cream cone has the same ethical value to an outside observer. Donating to charity is not objectively better than buying a new car. It lacks context and the hierarchy of values of the buyer.
Donation and/or charity and/or philanthropy are fundamentally neutral. They are "good" or "bad" (or neutral) depending on the ethical framework of the person executing/not executing those actions. There is no objective "good" or "bad" outside of adhering to one's rational hierarchy of values. Good and bad are relational concepts. They require a particular perspective. That's why when you say "it's a good movie" it is just an emotional observation and not a fact because good and bad are not factual thing. You cannot test them without applying a standard and we would all have to agree on that standard (and as I've said, altruism is a false standard).
The only "correct" view on donations (in my very honest and educated opinion) is that you should donate if you want to donate and mind your own fking business regarding what other people do. If you donate 100% of your net worth, I wouldn't respect you any more than a dude saving his paycheck in the bank or investing in stocks. If you both made a rational decision based on your rational hierarchy of values, both choices are just as valid and just as moral. I appreciate people who help others (I help people all the time) but not if it means they have to sacrifice a higher value for it.
If you can't justify your ethics with anything other than "because", it's likely that they are based on a fallacy. Check your premises before virtue signaling. Might make you a lot happier in the long term 😊

First of all this discussion is about how people should be thanked, it obviously has to do with value & virtue. But those aren't empty concepts. Just because they aren't obvious, doesn't mean they don't exist. The natural importance of working together & allowing diverse input (especially of ideas) into society are very important for animals that are physically weak & have to rely on ideas. Therefore balance of society, who helps with what & why, etc. are highly important for us.
If you think how we judge donations & how much people donate isn't important to one person (e.g. him or you), then you are simply wrong. They have a huge impact on our system. And obviously our system has a huge impact on us. Good, bad or neutral are depending of the framework which we establish in a society. That is what makes them relevant. Of course they are relative & often change over the generations and continents. But indicating that that makes them irrelevant would also mean calling language & mathematics irrelevant & irrational, because they are also just concepts we established.
[Of course it is not just bad in itself. ... It is bad FOR something (in this case working together -> bad for us.)]
PS: your closing argument is about who you respect & why. It is the exact same as what you criticized except for which value you personally think more important (selfcare > society). It is not more rational than the other opinion (societal impact > personal liking/values).

If I was into politics, I would have also love to follow those people which are total opposite of me in political spectrum, but I can also see their thoughts and processes and understand where they are coming from cause reading the same kind of opinions everytime where no one is disagreeing is totally exhausting for me. I always knew Twitter was garbage after being on the site and seeing the absolute specimens that reside on there but recently I contacted Twitter support, just to see what they were like, after someone instead of just having a civil debate over a GAME, went onto post a video of the points I made and assumed I was a virgin because of it somehow and not only that but then loads of people piled on me just saying all sorts of stuff. That didn't affect me in itself, I don't care about what people call me, but Twitter "support" claimed it wasn't targeted harassment. What makes it worse was 2 3 years ago my account got suspended because I told someone to shut up....
