2023 America: still 24 times larger than Japan. That’s why we fly.

2023: plenty of large cities in America are still a short high speed rail journey away from each other and yet americans have to fly because there is no alternative train.

It's quite bizarre how US and public transport don't mix well...

@@rosaria8384 It's our love of independence through use of the automobile. You wanna ride public transportation, go for it. I prefer not to become a victim!

I took this very train from Hiroshima to Tokyo and back in 1976. It was a nice trip and I quite enjoyed it.

A view of what could have been. Same time this was filmed, the SF BART system was being built and is no where near as well done; loud, bumpy, slow, trains that are late and broken down far too often and tracks that seemingly are maintained to make for the loudest ride possible through populated areas(can hear the trains scream from well over a mile away).

And full of mentally ill homeless people while the Shinkansen doesn’t see many homeless

the sound track for this film didn't need to be so good but I'm glad it was.

I've ridden the Shinkansen several times and it's such a great experience. It was also incredibly cool to stand on a platform when the Shinkansen went through the station at full speed. Even two or three tracks away from the platform I was standing on, it's speed was amazing.

I wish we had a way to emulate Japan's desire to build a system like this, with their commitment to meticulous maintenance, and no-excuses punctuality.

Japan is almost unrecognizable compared to this film now. Arguably the most technologically advanced country in the world now.

We should all have these trains behind our infrastructure. Being able to transport goods at 300mph+ is just a no brainer.

The high speed trains are only for people, they made space on the old and slow lines for freight.

Not realistic to transport most freight at those speeds. It could be done in theory, but it would require a complete reengineering of existing freight methods and infrastructure.

These trains were for the people only, and are mostly restricted to 200 mph

@periscopefilm The ticket shown starting at 1:48 has the Japanese date Showa 51.12.10. = December 10, 1976, the purchase date for a trip taking place on 12/15. The cost of the ticket was ¥18,000, about US$61. Unfortunately I couldn't tell on the ticket where the woman was traveling to or from, but it must be from Tokyo to Hakata because we see her alighting the train there. 🙂
I spent a few summers in Yokohama as a kid, and I rode the Shinkansen in 1970 from Shin-Yokohama to Osaka to visit Expo '70.

My first trip abroad in 2001 I snuck onto the Osaka to Tokyo trip w/o paying.
They pulled me off in Tokyo and put and me in a little room and yelled at me in Japanese for 90min then let me go.
