Pork Brains With Milk Gravy - Weird Stuff In A Can

- Here's something I have been meaning to feature on Weird Stuff In A Can for quite a while now - and finally, the day has come!
This little can of pork brains in Milk Gravy came all the way from the USA; it cost nearly £20 including shipping to get hold of this, so let's give it a try, and try to serve it exactly as per the standard serving suggestion.
The Outro music on this video is Soul Ballad by John Deley & The 41 Players
(The wooden spatula you see me using in this video, I carved by hand myself - the carving will appear in a later video...)
Also I want to thank you that no matter how 'weird' a product comes off, you're never demeaning or insulting about it. That's so refreshing to see. :)
ikr most youtuber going crazy and hateing its taste the country and insult the people who live there for eating that
Yea I see it and all I can think is how over dramatic they are !! It’s good to see his opinion on how it actually tastes not just ewww this thing is unfamiliar to me!!!
Yes, I agree! I do love that about his videos.
You sure know how to spend a Sunday.
Came for the scambaiting, stayed for the pork brains 😂

That’s over a week’s worth of cholesterol in one serving. Brains are awful, good lord.
a month... 17 eggs ...
That's what cholesterol is used for in the body! Coating nerves. Brain is just a bundle of nerves.
Tbh
Would a can of brains ever be nutritionally advisable?
@@Metallicamilo311 You mean 4 days.
The cholesterol...omg, my jaw dropped
It's so satisfying to use a can opener over a pull tab.
Eating something with the cholesterol of 17 eggs on more Eggs sounds like a Heardattack speedrun strat.
As an Indigenous person our morals are typically to use every part of the animal you can after slaughter to lower waste but also to honour the being wholly for giving its life for your sustenance is I love seeing videos that are about eating “weird” parts of animals (at least from a western perspective) but don’t frame it as “gross” or anything because they tend to be dragging down other cultures because of their differences in cuisine and often leads to straight up racism and xenophobic so I appreciate your neutral take and not the overdramatic othering. Keep it up shrimp, your videos are amazing
"it's all in your head"
The pig: is this a joke to you?
😂
Dude... milk gravy... nahhh. No need to be generous that's freaking brain juice
It's considered faux pas to eat pork brains in New Mexico, USA. I remember my grandfather once saying to me we never eat the brain because you will go crazy.
Damn, that's really interesting to hear.
Makes you wonder if they had some cases of prion diseases back then, and everyone noped right out of the brain eating because of it.
Pimp my can opener. Atomic Shrimp edition 🤣
This made me very uncomfortable. Nice to discover I have personal taboos.
Why the hell am i hooked on this channel
As a brain connoisseur, I can tell you that even fresh, pork brains are a bit bland. I'd also generally recommend against adding brains to scrambled eggs because of the monotony of similar textures. To give brains as a whole the best shot, my recommendation is to get some fresh goat brains, cook them in a light garam masala (not too much at all...really easy to overpower brains, even stronger ones like goat) yogurt sauce, and eat them either wrapped in naan with freshly shredded cabbage and a bit of either fresh chive or fresh green onion, on saffron rice with a bit of caramelized green onion whites, or on top of a bed of extra crispy french fries (chips) with fresh green onion and a light sprinkling of toasted sesame seeds. All of the recipes I just shared also work with lamb brains, but go even lighter on the curry as they are milder.
That does sound wonderful, but I can't help thinking it would be improved by substituting something else for the brains
@@AtomicShrimp You could if you want to, but I can definitely state that canning food rarely produces results akin to fresh food...and brains are no exception. That said, if the brain thing has squick factor to you, there is an alternative with a vaguely similar flavor and texture profile, though even milder, and that is marrow. You can use marrow as a substitute for brain and get a similar end result...especially if you fry the marrow before treating it as raw brain for the purposes of a recipe.
I'm not terribly worried about the ick factor. The health factors (both prions and cholesterol) are a slight concern.
@@AtomicShrimp They haven't actually found the goat prion scrapie to be transmissible through the consumption of goat brains by humans with a fair bit of study. The cholesterol on the other hand...yeah, brains are essentially made nearly entirely out of cholesterol...much like veins. I suppose I understand if you don't want to treat brains as a replacement for treats/cheat foods such as ice cream and the like.
That fact that it's brain meat is not as disgusting as the images of pink gravy and the scrambled egg cooking experience. This was utterly vile. Thank you so much for the intensely disturbing sensory ride.
Not sure how exclusive it is to my area (North Carolina Appalachian Mountains) but my great great grand parents were said to have loved brains and eggs...
I myself have never tried them but am not turned off by many things just haven't ever got around to it. They are usually in the stores locally, I suppose I should try them and keep the tradition alive lol
Did have a braised Rabbit once it came with the head on and stewed brains were inside. I was on holiday in Scotland. Nice. I had eaten bits of it and was then told afterwards.
Well , it might be an interesting product , but don't lose your head on it.
He seemed scared 😂
It would taste better with some Tobasco.

Izombie referance!
It’s ironic how he has a sign that says it’s all in your head
That didn't look very nice. I like pig brain but doubt I'd enjoy that.
I lived on a farm as a lad and when we killed an animal for food we ate every bit of it that was reasonably possible to eat. I learned to make (and love) brawn and faggots. I never put the brain into the brawn though (lol, sounds like an analogy). The brain was a special treat. It would be simmered / poached in milk then removed from the milk. The point of the milk was to remove the blood and the milk was allowed to cool and given to the cat or dog.
The brain was eaten warm, semi-mashed / spread with a lot of butter and white pepper on white toast. It was delicious and became my treat for processing all of the non-muscle meat parts of the pig for the table, usually eaten as a late supper when all else was done. (turning the handle of the old Spong mincer for an hour or so was hard work!)
Cheers.
Impressive. I could not have touched that product once I saw that horrid pink colour. Having said that, I would have sent you a can for far less money!
My Grandpa used to like this mixed in with scrambled eggs. I was never brave enough to try it.
Great gran used to eat these with eggs! I never had it haha. But southern usa it isn’t that weird. I’m not sure it’s very popular anymore.
I am from GA, in the south, and i know what a streak o lean biscuit is. But even i have never heard of pork brains. Must be before my time.
@Shirley Bailey That may be, but that has little to do with the southern USA. Which was what I was saying, if this is southern, I haven't heard of it.
Very rich, calorie dense food left over from the days when refrigeration wasn’t an option. Throw away nothing. Food is fuel.
It's hard to imagine a combination that's higher in cholesterol
and now we know cholesterol is good for you.
@Atomic Shrimp... your voice doesn't have the usual anticipation and enthusiasm.
Yeah - this wasn't great
That sounds revolting to me, I'd be hesitant to eat any animals brain, even if cooked, now if I turn into a Zombie- all bets are off.
You can host a house party and serve your guests brains and recreate the hannibal scene where that guy eats his own brain 🧠
That looks disgusting....however fresh brain is commonly eaten in my county of Serbia (don't waste anything on the pig is the philosophy)...I like it deep fried in breadcrumbs. Of course most things taste good deep fried.
There are some great tinned products & some even benefit from the canning & preserving process, but that brain isn't one of them.
i still have some rather odd stuff can i send some ? no brainer lol XD
Milk gravy is the bit that made me nauseous
Look up Howard Coble’s Brains n Eggs recipe. Use this to make it. It’s delicious, even my wife who thought it would be a joke loves it.
About $7 each on Amazon
So why dont you like pull tabs?
He said its because it makes a mess and for some other reason I cant remember. Watch another can video with a pull tab. He might elaborate.
do you gain the memories of the pig when you eat it?
You are truly eloquent!
I would be more inclined if it was in a jelly. That pink milk stringy 'blood' is a little off- putting. Better you than me. 🤔
I had fun watching the video, but really, mostly what I was thinking is "why do English people sometimes say tinned and sometimes canned?" Maybe it's regional?
I guess my priorities are a bit different.
Anyway, insert joke about how if you were eating my brains, you'd need a bigger can... or tin...
British English uses a lot of synonyms - some of that was probably due to regional dialects, but now that everyone moves about more, dialects have all blurred and intermingled

I’m very glad...I think 🤔, to see this. My grandmother talks about how she ate them many years ago. She ate lots of things that most would consider to be weird these days...and full of cholesterol. Apparently it never affected her, as she’s 103 years old!
dietary cholesterol intake doesn't affect your blood cholesterols as much as you may be inclined to think.
People who eat a diet rich in cholesterol don’t tend to get Alzheimer’s or dementia.
I knew someone who lived into the late 90s and ate everything...no diet food, just real foods. It helped they were a farmer and probably exercised a lot as a result.
103 is quite remarkable... does she suffer from her age as normal?
@@krkrbbr I mainly eat eggs, up to ten a day, and my cholesterol levels are normal. Many people still think that cholesterol intake also raises your blood cholesterol into unhealthy levels

@@06hatter A perfectly reasonable aversion. Brain is one of the riskiest organ meats.
@@Chironex_Fleckeri Oh interesting, how come?
@@aka5 Look into prions. There are some good short videos on YT that explain them better than I could. Basically, proteins can become infectious and cause problems. They are a misfolded protein that cause progressive disease. Mad cow disease can cause Kreutzfeld-Jakobs Disease in humans, an untreatable brain disease that leads to death. Prions can't be destroyed in autoclaves (the things that sterilize surgical instruments and whatnot at high pressure and temperatures). They're like viruses in a way. Joe Rogan talked about a new prion disease affecting deer or elk in North America. So far those prions aren't affecting humans but it's risky. By the way, the prions can take decades to cause signs of disease. Prions are mostly or only found in brain tissue. There are some cannibal tribes in the Southern Pacific and Indian Ocean Islands that have much higher rates of these diseases..they eat dead ancestors or something. That's about all I know. It's interesting to research
Oh yeah, so to destroy them you need to heat them up to like 900 degrees Fahrenheit. They also resist formaldehyde and ionizing radiation like UV and Gamma rays. Insane right? They cause a domino effect that leads to your body replicating the harmful prions instead of the normal proteins. Scary.
This is the least kosher stuff on earth lol...

Had as child (tubby custard). Was pretty nice actually if I remember correctly.....I don't think I remember Lumos of brains in there though.... Haha
It gives, "Time for Teletubby bye bye" a new meaning.
Watching you eat brains while processing what I’m seeing with my own brain makes me feel weird things. It’s kind of how I felt strange tasting beef tongue with my own tongue at first (very delicious btw,) and how as a child I felt weird when me and another person looked into each other’s eyeballs using our own eyeballs.
Btw I very much appreciate the respect you show to unfamiliar foods. Curiosity and openness make one’s life richer and more interesting, and you’re the living proof!
This comment gave me an existential crisis and validated me all in a single moment.

Prions...
I would avoid eating neural tissue from any animal given the risks involved. But I'm a bit paranoid about exposure to prions, given their ability to persist despite sanitization, and even being autoclaved in a solution of lye...
Mammals at least.
Especially CAFO raised animals with worse hygiene conditions.
Well, after a brief Google, my already non existent curiosity for this was somehow squashed even more. Good god that is terrifying.
@@maxj9204 yep, they are.... Especially because there are so many in the wild. Some that we are aware of, and others yet to be discovered.
When I stumbled upon Wikipedia pages for prion diseases, I didn't sleep at all that night.
Which is ironic, because the one that scared me the most is the one that gradually causes you to become unable to sleep.
I live in the south US and pork brains (among other brains) have been a common breakfast food for well over 200 years in some states. *I* have never tried them personally, but I know my grandparents used to pan fry them *with* eggs, bacon, ham, hashbrowns and such.. and many swear they are delicious if cooked properly.
My mother told me about people on the farm eating them, as she was a kid in the 50-60's in the south. But it was more to do with how poor the south was at that time, and they didn't waste anything. I can remember seeing these in the grocery stores in the 90's, and I don't ever recall anyone buying them when I worked in one.
People turn their noses up, but then again most of us have never experienced real hungry.
@@spencers4121 Yep yep.. much of it has to do with poverty and making use out of whatever you have around. Kinda sad though.. think how different the world would be if *everyone* lived with that same mentality.. "waste not, want not".

Bit too much muscle for my taste, but I'd go for that. Lungs? I know there's worse in any given sausage. But brains? Hard no, and I could not make myself in any context.
I'd be terrified of contracting some form of prion related disease like human CJD/mad cow disease.

Gag reflex triggered.
I love pork brains, they are delicious... but I probably would never have canned ones. A classic polish recipe is cooking them with onion and vinegar and eating that on bread. I personally prefer when they are made into cutlets.
If anybody is squeamish to try actual pork brains... try cooking scrambled eggs with tomatoes, onions and a bit of vinegar. It will smell and taste almost exactly the same as prepared pork brains.
This would make a good horror prop. Not good food. I'm amazed that's a US product, since this is one of those foods that's distinctly unappetizing here. Ugh, just knowing the brains are what dyed that milk pink almost made me have to close the video... You're too brave.

This is one of the few canned products that made me nauseous just looking at it. That and the stratospheric cholesterol content.
Mr. Shrimp, I've never had that before, sounds and looks horrible but I'd still eat that any day over corn smut. If you want a taste delight, slice up spam nice and thick and fry it in honey. The salty sweet flavor is out of this world. With a side of creamy mac n cheese it is to die for.
Honestly, the corn smut was way nicer.
My granny used to make 'brainsoup' (Hirnsuppe). She was german from the southern region, and this was back in the day a traditional starter at weddings. Definitely tasty. That is extremely high cholesterol. How can anyone eat this regularly?
From Wikipedia: "The makeup of the brain is about 29% fat, most of which is located in myelin (which itself is 70-80% fat). Specific fatty acid ratios will depend in part on the diet of the animal it is harvested from. The brain is also very high in cholesterol. For example, a single 140g (5oz) serving of "pork brains in milk gravy" can contain 3500mg of cholesterol (1170% of the USRDA)."

Pork brains in a can, yep, doesn't get much more North Carolina than that, unless they find a way to shoehorn some tobacco in there somehow. Actually, after you cooked it, it doesn't look too bad. I'd probably douse it in some Texas Pete hot sauce, ironically, also from right here in NC
I find it yucky, but it's more of a moral yuck than an aesthetic yuck. If you can image eating an aborted fetus brain, it's a bit like that. The good news is that the fetus and the pig were destined for the slaughterhouse anyway, so it doesn't really create extra demand for harm.
edit: also funny thing, under the philosophy of monism this may be equivalent to eating a soul 🤭
Mr. Shrimp, I love you, but those eggs looked unappetizing even before you added the pork brains.
