  • Peter begins clearing the land and gathering material for his fort construction. He outlines his plan for the blockhouses and where he plans to build the palisade. He also shares the history of one failed fortification on the frontier and one successful defence with limited manpower.

A monumental undertaking Peter. When asked by some " What would you do if you won the lottery ? " my response has always been that I would build an 18th C fort :- ] I love your comment re the neighbours ...I have a similar reputation around these parts !

I'm just getting to these episodes now, I've sold my house in Hamilton, moved to the Ottawa area to be closer to my Grandkids and I'm happy to be able to binge watch your progress so far. I know you're building a fort, You know your building a fort, we all agree it's a fort and it's going to be epic! So my suggestion would be to only partially built a wall between the cabin and the pond.... because lets face it, you're really not going to be defending against any southern intruders (re: rampaging Americans) or such these days. Keep the access and the view to the pond and know that if you needed to you could fortify the rest of it if you had to...

    • @TheWoodlandEscape
      @TheWoodlandEscape  10 місяців тому +4

The way America is divided, one must be prepared, lol . The current plan is pretty much what you’ve described… the palisade will be reduced toward the pond. I just became the proud owner of a swivel gun which will be mounted to protect across the pond. We are only a couple of hours east of Ottawa. Should you find yourself in these parts do stop in.

There has to be a local black powder club that hosts rendezvous that would love to help with this. Maybe even contact the James Townsend group to see if they would like to participate and also film videos for their channel. Like you said, this is going to be a major building project for just one man. You sure do not want to risk injury that could delay or stop this great project. Something to think about. Hmmm… Do you have any Boy Scout troops in the area, Eagle Scouts that would be interested in helping? Or maybe even primitive craftsmen?

As a kid growing up in the Ouachitas of west Arkansas, I played frontier.
In the 70s It was still a very much old time ways , we were poor , and the old timers where still around .
I learned a wealth of knowledge,
I do miss those old timers and their way of life , and thier stories.
I don't even recognize that the region any more ,
    I did build a modern cabin .
Offgrid. My home , I live a minimalist lifestyle also . Solar is nice though .
I guess I'm some of the last , lol
Though there are some young folks starting to go offgrid , they don't have the same knowledge or purpose. If we don't go back to a simpler lifestyle, the world can not
    Substain itself .
    I will not build a fort , I'll save my timber .

So what are you going to name it? Looks like you need some troops to help in construction. Better put a call out.
I built a small fort for my two kids to play in at the one corner of our yard. Complete with a pvc and wood cannon that would shoot foam balls painted black. I put a hole in the fort where it took a cannon ball. Painted around the hole with flat black to make it look burned. Lol. We had a blast in that silly fort. Literally. We opened it officially with a dedication ceremony. All the neighborhood kids came and took part. The best nights were the 4th of July with fireworks going off. Added to the realism. Great times.

So nice to hear this story. Betty Zane was my g,g,g,g,aunt. I grew up in the house my g-grandfather built just below where she is buried in Martins Ferry. Used to climb the hill and go sit on her gravestone when I was about 12.

I will. Ebenezer is buried right with her in the graveyard if you are ever that way. The used to have Betty Zane days when I was a kid... Got to dress up like her one year. Fun times.

Hmmmm, some crazy old guy, dressing up in weird clothes, is building a fort….who would think that’s weird? 😀😀. I guess only your wife can say if you’ve gone over the edge or not. 🙂
Oh, and having the poop house outside the fort wouldn’t have been practical, but imagine the historical tales that would have come form that! 😀
Good luck with it all. I’ll be fascinated to watch it.
