They’re not bigger because they’re not aggressive or flashy. They’re sensitive and vulnerable. These two are both great songs from their “alt metal” period. The most powerful song from this album, which they’ve played live quite a bit in later years, is “Dissolving Bonds,” and yet another sleeper fan favorite is “Unfurl,” a slow, non-metal song with electronic drums that they’ve played an acoustic versions of
Oh man, Katatonia. More memories from waaay back in their earlier days with their albums "Dance of December Souls" and "Brave Murder Day" (the latter which had Mikael Åkerfeldt on scream vocals: ' the band also recruited Renkse's friend, Mikael Åkerfeldt of the band Opeth, to perform the screamed vocals, as Renkse became unable to do them himself anymore due to medical issues.'"). I need to get back to these guys, I haven't really listened to Katatonia since ~99/00. Thanks for reacting to this (and for suggesting it), it brought this band back to my mind after two decades.
I discovered this band with Evidence in 2003, and it was played on a metal rock show that doesn't exist any more. I am forever grateful to them for playing it to me. I think that Viva Emptiness is what defined the "new" Katatonia, as they had been searching around after their growling days to find another expression, Ilove that album. And The Great Cold Distance is the album I always come back to, I'll play it over and over again for weeks at a time.
Amazing! Two of the songs in my top 5 greatest Kata songs in one video, being analyzed. Greatest band ever! Great video and love your analysis at the end. Just subscribed to you because of your Katatonia content now. We need guys like you spreading the word about superb bands such as this that do not nearly get the attention that they deserve. My honest opinion? I think the fact they started off as a black metal band might have something to do with it? But hey, it's part of their growth to get to where they are now creating some of their best work to date and they're not slowing down. Like someone said down below....yeah, I just feel these guys aren't in that "cool" factor due to their lack of aggression and focus on sensitivity of the world. The fact this is intelligent music with meaning and not mindless, senselessness is perhaps what doesn't grab the attention of the mainstream. I hate saying shit like this, but let's face it....most people I think do not want to seek anything deeper or with meaning (I refrain from using the word unintelligent)- they just want to be fed the McDonalds of the music world, like Metallica, Black Sabbath, Guns 'N Roses or any other band that keeps showing up on itunes top 50 metal albums.
When Viva Emptiness came out I couldn’t get over how good it is. Give the entire album a listen when you can. Maybe try a reaction to Chrome by Katatonia. It’s from the album The Last Fair Deal Gone Down
Great reactions, katatonia has emotional songs, please react to "new night" and "departer" both from night is the new day album, I think you'll love them.
Lethean is their most commercially friendly song, or maybe My Twin, probably debatable. My Twin was how I discovered them. Check out Gone from the Sanctitude live album... whew.... Soils Song, Day and then the Shade, Hypone, Liberation, July... I could go on and on with song recommendations.
Based on Spotify, without question My Twin is their MAINSTREAM track. The fact that this song wasn't even capable of making this band HUGE is just shocking to me. I think there's just something too dark or just unappealing about the band's image....or perhaps Jonas isn't a macho frontman like In Flames or Lamb of God. Such bullshit.....Katatonia are just there in a class of their own. They are so unique and the people that enjoy them are also a class on their own. I feel like anyone who discovers and enjoys Katatonia are top class human beings and have a fine taste of the world. Because with Katatonia, they're somewhere inbetween Pop and Metal. They're not metal enough for the true metal lovers and they're not pop enough to appeal to the one's who do not love metal. They are just so fucking unique. Take me for example....I HATE metal and yet Katatonia is my favourite band of all time. Now why is that? I don't even understand why it is like this with me and the band. Katatonia have just enough heaviness for my liking (I do like heavy when handled right) mixed with a perfect balance of chill vibes and soft aggression. It's a band truly unlike any other.
Dude this band is by far one of the most talented out there. Just think their early material was epic melodic doom metal till the doctor told Jonas no more death growl vocals for you. So they completely changed their style and this is the end product. You have to be one if not the only one to play more than one song from this band. Just shows you all the closed minded asses out there. Glad we got one convert at least, keep going they have tons of great stuff.
You should check out Poets of the Fall - Carnival of Rust... Along the lines of Katatonia, you hear it and your mind is blown they are not bigger but you will notice a theme, the topics these bands cover are emotional and though provoking... not what Americans are looking for generally.
I do know them because my son brought them up a few years ago, saying they did music for some video games. I listened to some, but I recall what. I'll check it out, thanks
Since you're loving Opeth and Katatonia, can i suggest you to check a really good band that plays a similar kind of music and is often overlooked? They're called Novembre, Katatonia's guitarist even played a solo in their last single Annoluce, the bands know each other from a very long time and toured together too. Songs like Umana, Geppetto, Bluecracy are really good too.
Come Pierrot is still imo their greatest song ever recorded. And Novembrine Waltz their best album. I bought Materia and it disappointed me and with that album I lost interest in the band ever since. Also, My Starving Bambina is my 2nd fav song from them. He should check out those!
@@sonicallydisruptive Honestly? If you have to check out just one album from them I would recommend Novembrine Waltz. I just have a feeling like that one will will anyone over.
@@CJTranceAddiction I agre about novembrine walts, Materia has been a particular album, what's weird Is that they gained a lot of new fans with It, but that was not the usual style of the band. I really loved the Blue, you should absolutely check It, Ursa the last album never convinced me though.
Glad you're not doing it for the views man. Jonas voice is so perfect for all the morose the band likes to thrive within. They're masters of making a sound you're familiar with, but making it theirs and then it all resonating so well.
I'm just trying to listen to some great music I've missed. And if I can bring a little bit of that joy back to someone who has heard it many times, amazing! Really appreciate you watching.
in my eyes by far the best of the underrated bands in the world... perhaps together with new model army...

Thanks. These last 2 I listened to would have easily fit in with modern rock radio and woild have been better than most.
The production for Great Cold Distance is on point. Definitely my favorite album of theirs

I'm just glad to have gotten the change to hear them. Honestly, in my area, Midwest U.S., no exposure to them.
I only started listening to them in 2001. You missed out on a LOT of development on their part. You should check it all out, it's just great :)

Katatonia were pretty big in northern Europe, yet gradually faded away as any form of metal passed away from radio.
When Viva Emptiness came out I couldn’t get over how good it is. Give the entire album a listen when you can. Maybe try a reaction to Chrome by Katatonia. It’s from the album The Last Fair Deal Gone Down
Sounds good, thanks
@@sonicallydisruptive Viva Emptiness is a theme album it has a story to tell. You'd definitely enjoy it if you listen it from beginning til end.
Yeah I remember when Viva Emptyness came out it was on another level

@@sonicallydisruptive Sanctitude is a great live album overall. Teargas and Unfurl are my two favourite from that album.

My first Katatonia song.... recommended because of my love of Riverside.
There is a quality to Katatonia which does remind me of Riverside. Everything just seems tastefully done with both.

A convert for sure. One of my favorite bands now!
Great pair of songs! Yeah they should have huge. Hangin' in there for Enslaved - Sacred Horse!
Good call. That another one of those bands, I have heard about, but never checked out. Will do!
The Ocean "Devonian Nascent" features the vocalist from Katatonia. It's a German metalband, that few react to.
I know them alittle, but will check that one out, Thanks!
I recommend Lethean from Dead End Kings Album. Best song ever from Katatonia. First song I heard from them them, Not the last one!
Special band ... plz do Katatonia- Brave . It features Mikael from Opeth!!
Will do, thank you!
I recommend Unfurl, one of their best and most „different” songs.
yes, that song is fing awesome
Thanks I'll do it. Love what I've heard from them so far.
Departer or Burn The Remembrance
Will do anything by them, thanks!
Great sound. If you like the melodic heavy then Caligulas horse the song Graves could be the way. Not my cup of tea but Soen also.
Will do them!
Since you are doing Katatonia try The Ocean- Devonian: Nascent. Jonas from Katatonia guest sings on that song.
I know some Ocean, didn't know this and will check it out, thanks!
