@@1bgrant You do pronounce the 'h' in historian, so it's an 'a'. In 'hour', you don't pronounce the 'h' thus it's 'an'.

Words like: Hour, Honor, Honest, etc. Even though they start with consonant letters, they do not use 'a' but instead 'an'
"It's an honor to meet you"
"I am an honest person"
So it's not about the letter, but by how it sounds.

When the first letter of a word sounds as if it stars with a vowel then we use 'an', try pronouncing 'honor' it sounds more like 'oner' and this pronunciation has 'o' at it start. Therefore we use 'an' article
