As someone who’s new to growing - having got awarded an allotment at home in Leeds a week ago - I got dewy eyed when I searched then found guidance from Sligo folks (looks like Ben Whiskin(?) in the background?). I’m fairly new at this too, but unless you’re too early to transplant directly to your garden I’d let them grow strong root systems in the cells and then transplant direct to the garden where they like to grow best!

My 1st time growing red cabbage ..have them in the greenhouse and they have got quite tall tbh so I was wondering do I have to cut off the leave stems in order for them to grow into a heart? and if so can I still use the leaves for cooking that I do cut off? I am not a great gardener and i would say normally i have Black fingers not green BUT i did grow savoy last year never realy got a heart but still used the leaves!

My brassicas, including cabbages all develop a stem which flops and lays flat on the ground. I transplant them up to first leave, tramp down the soil so it's firm. I've tried sowing different times of year. I do lime the soil and there doesn't appear to ne club root. Far north UK. What's going wrong?

I sort of gave it some charcoal and covered it with a charcoal log to keep it warm because it's suppose to snow for a few days. It's an experiment, any thoughts? I will definitely plant again later

Cabbages tend to thrive in in soil with a lot of organic matter, so mix in a 2-3” (5-8cm) layer of good garden compost or well rotted manure when you prepare the bed. They require a high nitrogen content to promote healthy foliage.
