Thank you Charlie. You inspired me to construct the same type of river on my layout.
Will you do a video to show how you create the river?
Are you going to do a video on how to create the river?
Great Stuff Kim.
I wont be progressing mine for a while but check out how I did mine on the viaduct.
Regards Charlie
@@ChadwickModelRailway Will do, cheers Charlie!
Hi Charlie, you put a new meaning to the carpenters saying you can’t have too many clamps, now you have to add you can’t have too many weights to the saying. The river is a good idea, I can’t wait to start my layout and I will have a river. Hope you are keeping well, Keith
I'm so pleased that you found it interesting Keith.
Very proud of you Charlie, you didn't saw your workmate in half.
Didn't even nick it.
Thanks Charlie - Good video. Well done for not cutting the work or picnic bench in half!
It clearly was a possibility Si.
Charlie, famous last word, it could be hard. You are a better carpenter than me. It looks a good bit of woodwork.
Not up close Nigel.
Sorry Valley Shortline and Canal (OO scale) .Thanks Charlie for walking us through this simple but effective way to fill in an empty space. I changed my "river" into a canal so I could add a narrowboat scene..
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Timothy.
Thank you Charlie for your many videos, they are excellent and are of great help to me. One safety point, I was taught many, many years ago that when using a jig saw, ensure that the cable goes over your shoulder and down your back. That way there is little chance of cutting thro the cable with the saw. Take care.
A good tip Bob thank you, although it probably needs a longer lead.
A great idea Charlie. The river scene will add a visual depth and not just a flat board with track running across. I can see your enthusiasm going already talking about fishermen and a picnic scene. How about a couple in a canoe. Then there is the shopping trolley and a discarded Tyres or bike. Great work as usual Charlie keep it up. Stay safe.
Gary Co Durham.
All great ideas Gary, many thanks.
Morning Charlie, what a great little idea. It breaks up the track and adds yet another dimension to your layout. At the same time it still gives you good access to the electronics below. Personally I'd leave the river now until later, but first cap the back before you forget. Concentrate on getting the track down and wired in so you can get back to running some loco's.
Cheers Gareth.
My thoughts entirely Gareth, get some trains going first.
That worked out quite well. Can't wait to see the end game.
Me too Frank
Hi Charlie, just watched your latest offering-enjoyed it very much.
Recently took down my layout to move house-then the virus arrived. Can't move!
All railway stock packed up in boxes. Never mind, your video's always cheer me up.
Please carry on!
I’m sorry to hear that you are stuck in limbo Mike. I’ll try to keep you amused. Stay safe, regards Charlie.
Ask Santa for another cordless drill.
Top job sir 👍🏼
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Ed.
Lovely work mate. I hope we’ll see Ratty and Moley mucking about in a boat up near the bridge./overpass.
The adventure continues Allan.
Hi Charlie nicely done now Jenny wants a river. by the way your plywood looks better than the rubbish we get in AUS .cheers David and Jenny.
Thanks D &J, I'm so pleased that you found it interesting.
Great. I'll look forward to seeing the scenic development. Thanks.
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Austin.
River or Canal will be a great scene for development
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it, stay safe Bob.
Very nice can't wait to see it take shape with the scenery. 👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
Thanks GB, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it
One observation, Charlie. The land surrounding the river would generally be floodplain, meaning that the railway would be on an embankment (even a small one for effect), to protect the p-way from flooding. Looking good though.
Now you tell me!
A fair point Holly.
Outside in a T shirt in sunny conditions not in Edinburgh you wouldn't,you are a very talented guy Charlie and if I was starting out to build a set I would recommend loooking and learning from yourself, roll on next Friday.Stay safe everyone.
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it, stay safe Robert.
Looking good Charlie can’t wait for scenery
Thanks Colin.
Great job and if it's like the other end you will have a great look. As you mentioned about a picnic area on the bank reminded me of a layout at Ally Pally a couple of years ago as my friend pointed out she said, look there a nudist colony, I said no way and there was, partially hidden by high bushes! Go on Charlie I dare you? Hope everyone is staying safe and I'm gagging for a pint of a pub real ale. Cheers
I'm so pleased that you found it interesting Ian and I might have a fishing competition, clothed!
most helpful for my upcoming project. cheers from ireland
I am so pleased that you enjoyed it Phil.
Splendid stuff, as always. I might have been tempted to have a canal, if only to add a barge quay. If my math is right, that ±5" is about thirty foot to scale, which ought to be a decent enough river. Such things are bit more complicated if one is modeling US rivers, as they often have 30-40' tall embankments a quarter mile to either side of the waterway centerline, for flood control. So, railroad modelers much prefer river scenes with "hard" embankments, or just "wild" rivers.
I'll probably go for a fishing competition.
I'm from British Columbia and this is the first time I have heard of the Canadian Lumber Standard nice to know it exists. Here I thought dimension lumber was an industry standard. What you have there is a 2" X 3" pronounced two by three. The species are usually spruce, pine, or fir printed as SPF on the lumber.
Great info Geoff.
Brilliant, funny and informative. What more could you ask for?!
You’re too kind mate. Regards Charlie.
I love watching your videos. In fact if I spent as much time working on my own layout as I do watching videos about yours I'd have something worth showing 😂
Stop mucking about on UA-cam and get modelling. See you Friday at noon!
Hello Charlie, nice work their. I am in the states and this is almost the exact way I did my river into a small cove. Also I figured this is a sturdy construction method . With the wood and glue bottom it creates a perfect seal for water products later. Here in the state I will use a bit of foam for contours.
I'm so pleased that you found it interesting Adrien.
Charlie, there really is no end to your talent. The river will add an extra dimension to that area, As an added bonus your body gained some vitamin D having worked in the sun for an hour or so. Keep up the good work. Cheers Greg
You're too kind as usual Greg. Stay safe mate.
Nice work Charlie. Cheers, Bob
Thanks Bob.
Brilliant video Charlie, thanks for your skill and your commitment to our hobby. enjoy a blessed Easter
You too Bob and stay safe mate.
Great video Charlie full of info you make things look so easy, thankyou
Thanks Paul, you’re too kind
Why didn't I think of this - I was planning to build scenery upwards to accommodate a stream which would have been at baseboard level. You've saved me a whole lot of work and I shall get cracking with the jig-saw tomorrow! Many thanks, John B.
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it John.
Fantastic loved it look forward to this every week
Thanks Kenny, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it. Regards Charlie.
Hi Charlie, Never made comments to you before, but do watch your videos which I like, all very informative including the mistakes obviously intentional!!!!!!!!!.
Great video on how you done the River bed such an easy way to do it, too late for me to do one now anyway keep up the good work, best regards from Barry in Spain
Thanks Barry, I’m so pleased that you enjoy the videos. Regards Charlie. Oh and stay out of the Sun!
Wow Charlie this was so inspiring I now really wanna make sort of creek or river under a bridge on my railway
Will you be doing a canal as well on the railway?
I dont think so RS
I'm so pleased that you found it interesting RS.
Charlie, A nice foundation for you to start on. Glad to see you staying inside your " Bubble". Once or twice there you were venturing out to far from the house. Just be carefull the people next door don't report you for pushing your stay at home boundaries. First day of summer and your out waveing your jig-saw around. Cheers, Chris Perry.
Hi Chris, man and jigsaw should never be separated. I’m a danger to myself! Stay safe, regards Charlie.
Did we all shout STOP! as the jigsaw neared the workmate?
But clearly you didn’t shout loud enough! Regards, Charlie
Hi Charlie, that was great. You are a true Renaissance man. Lol. I look forward to your progress. Your viaduct series is a favorite of mine. This looks like it will be too. See ya next time.
I'm so pleased that you found it interesting Norman.
Jolly good Charlie, well done. :)
Thanks Brad.
Charlie;
The math behind your river embankments was fascinating. In all my years NEVER did I consider something so simple. Cudios.
Now for the bad news. I attempted to share your handsanitizer video on Facebook. FB. & Co. block my publishing it due to their "STANDARDS". Shocking! Facebook has standards??? Unless someone complained. Maybe it was a CoVid-19 germ. FYI.
~Jim
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Jim, as for FB, nothing surprises me there.
Hi Charlie,
Enjoyed watching you do this you seem to take everything in your stride so well done will be keen to see the finished river with everybody keeping 2m apart one thing you do a lot of changing of drills screw bits etc you can get a tool that takes both and you just swap as needed and the one I have is also magnetic so if a metal object gets in between the sleepers you can just get it out easy I do it with my pins but I know you do not use them but I am sure it might have happened with fishplates etc.Your looking very well so please keep that way and stay safe.
Cheers Robert.
Hi Robert, I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it. Musical chucks is something that I do suffer from!
Thanks Charlie!
You're welcome VN.
A proper job again Charlie. Im at the planning stage i have flexi and points galour for my layout. But until this lockdown is done I am stuck. Taking in you ideas. The viaduct may be on my horizon and I am planning open frames for my baseboards to give me multiple areas for scenery. Keep up the great work love it.....
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Glenn . I would have thought with this lockdown, you would have the ideal opportunity to start the build.
So glad you showed up! Thank you, Charlie.
Stay safe, regards Charlie
Hi Charlie great video now I want a river on mine now my wife really likes you for it lol so am going to have my brew then go and do it cheers Charlie thanks Paul 😊😊😊
Hi Charlie I did it well it's not as good as yours so I've gone with a canal instead and I've put a elevator on the lines and my good old McDonald's wooden sticks worked a treat lol cheers for the idea I've enjoyed it lots cheers Paul
Hi Paul, I’m so pleased that I am able to bring a few new ideas to your layout. Stay safe the two of you, regards Charlie.
@@ChadwickModelRailway hi Charlie it was a great idea railway looks better so far I did use installation bored had to cut it down I was lucky to have some because someone left it outside of a house that was being done up so I walked past and picked it up and took it home lol so it sits in my garden covered up lol 😃😂😂😂😂 I'll give it back if they want it back lol cheers Paul
Nice one Charlie, as always a pleasure to watch you tackle the layout. Stay safe 😎
Thanks Chris, stay safe mate.
Nice idea Charlie.
Thanks Andrew
Hi Charlie... There is nothing wrong with patting yourself on the back when a plan comes together. Especially if no one else is around to do it ..Great job on the river build so far.. Cheers and Happy Easter.🐣
Thanks Jim, I'm so pleased that you found it interesting.
This is going to be fantastic Charlie, looking forward to seeing how great it likes, nice to see sun shine, we have had lots of rain this week, something we don't usually get this time of the year....thanks for sharing....Jack 👍
I'm so pleased that you found it interesting JO.
Charlie brilliant video again
Thanks Simon.
Great video as usual. Keep them coming.
Thanks Phil.
Thanks Charlie great video as always
Thanks Trevour, stay safe, regards Charlie
Hello, very good video! I learn a lot, thanks for teaching so well! Greetings!
Excuse me, I wrote without thinking in Spanish or English, is that the language of modeling is universal, hahaha, that is very good!
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it Fabi.
Great Idea Charlie. As you said, it gives the layout depth and texture. I am looking forward to developments. Super.
Thanks Anthony. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Brilliant. Doing planning right now...and the pull-out work surface is dead-center relevant...thank you. It’s a wonderful series!
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it, stay safe P.
Thanks for the good ideas here. I plan to add a dockside river to my layout but don't know how low the water should be as it's tidal!
Perhaps at low tide might allow some great weathering on the Quayside but still allowing some water in the dock.
I discovered from my last (failed) layout about gluing the cross members down, I just screw them in place now. Much easier to allow for a bit of flexibility like you've shown. I've just today worked out I need to move one by an inch due to an annoyingly placed point motor!
Yes Martin, using glue can be a very sticky subject.
Your a genius lol wish I d seen this last year lol I left a large gap and fitted kingspan in and carved it then supported it . Your way looks much better lol
I'm so pleased that you found it interesting WB.
Another great video. oh and by the way i saw that neat carpenters trick of cleaning the glue off your finger by wiping it on the underside of the board lol..at 12:12
I sometimes forget about the camera, darn it!
Hi Charlie this is great 👍 am just starting a build and want to put a canal in so will use this technique my self . Makes sense really 🤣🤣 love all the videos learning a lot 👍👍👍
Thanks Carl, I'm so pleased that you found it interesting.
I think a river is a good idea, especially as you also have the viaduct. I look forward to seeing the progress of the layout. I do admire your level of detail, and dedication. It is also nice to watch your work, and brighten up these current uncertain times.
I'm so pleased that you found it interesting Alan and thanks for such a kind comment.
I can't remember what a river looks like thanks to this quarantine! A pleasure to watch as always. 👍🏻
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it, how's the new job?
I just had a nice chat with David J.
Our freind's name came up regularly!
Gorilla Glue is an expanding glue and if you dampen the glue area just before you put down the glue on both sides it works even better
Thanks mate.
Absolutely brilliant. I am so looking forward to seeing you develop this project over the coming months. Well done again, Charlie and stay safe.
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Sid. Stay safe regards Charlie
Nice one again Charles, no point in repeating what others have said without getting all Gorilla Glued about it for it was all good work in the end. I look forward to the next episode to seeing this developing scene. Like the old saying of a Charlie of all trades, but a master of none, you do very well my friend in producing these films and building your layout. Though I was cringing and expecting another single Chuckle Brother moment were you cut into the picnic table. Anyway, you have a great Easter Holiday weekend rolling your dyed hard-boiled eggs down a hillside without getting a fine for being out unnecessary other than exercising. Though watching you working away has been enough for me today and I'm tired out, goodnight, well morning at 3:18 am... J... zZZZz.
What a great comment John, stay safe mate.
@@ChadwickModelRailway Oh thank you, Charlie, I really do enjoy your video films, especially when you get tongue-tied and the other comical moments that crop up that I've witnessed so far. Laughter is such a great medicine and that is why with a pun here or there, a cheeky or yeah I can be a bit sarcastic I know, but never to deliberately hurt or maim anyone. Hopefully, I have not done that with you as it wouldn't have been said to upset you or anyone else. If at any time it has please let me know. You keep healthy too Charlie and extend that to your family too.
Another stonker, Charlie. The weather is fine and you know it's a sign, for messing about on the river. ;) It'll just have to be an indoor one for now*; and very nice it is too.
*Unfortunately I still have to go into work but I'm off for 8 days from tomorrow evening. Timber delivered, layout plan decided, track been dispatched. Watch this space! Can't tell you how much of an influence and inspiration you continue to be!
@10:00 My Grandad built and maintained Charlie 130s. *Proud but slightly sad smile, as he passed a couple of years back*
I grew up in Swindon and the skys around Lynham was full of them 50 years ago!
Love your work Charlie
Thanks Tez.
@@ChadwickModelRailway your welcome
Charlie, please stay indoors. We don't want to lose you to the virus.
Good point Dave !
Hi Charlie. Great video. You make it look so easy. I hope you and your family are staying safe.
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it, stay safe David.
Stellar work Charlie. You always provide me such inspiration. Now I just need to get back down to my garage and make a start!
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Chris.
Very clever Charlie. Well done! Stay well. Best regards, Ken.
Thanks Ken, you're too kind.
Well then went better than last weeks video :) - Layout is coming along nicely, and I love the concept that the river flows through to the other board on the opposite side of the layout.
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it, stay safe Malcolm.
Fantastic video, Charlie. Looked like a great day to be building out in the sun and the riverbed looks quite clever! Thanks for the tips.
Thanks Anthony. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Another great video Charlie ,I love the way you take the mick out of yourself ,keep up the good work mate. Regards Dave
Thanks David, I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it.
I'm looking forward to seeing this develop!
Me too Callum.
may i suggest a mirror at the far end which will give you depth keep the tutorial coming great
An interesting point Thomas.
very good Charlie like it.
Thanks very much Tony.
Hi Charlie, Another great blog and great to do your step by step process. Thumbs Up 👍
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it, stay safe Jamie.
At the 16 minute mark, that was a smart move to put the cross members in that also sit on with the under side of the river bottom.
When the glue ever lets go if it is those cross members will catch the river :)
Hopefully it will stay together mate.
@@ChadwickModelRailway I'm spoiled here in Canada, blue & pink foam boards or expanding foam in a can if you want too get real crazy.
Well done Charlie, I'm looking forward to how your river progresses, keep up the great content!!
I'm so pleased that you found it interesting Robin.
Great video again. 👍🏻
CLS = Canadian Lumber Standard
Now you tell me !
Great episode. You inspire the rest of us to try something different (and be a bit braver 😀).
Thank you.
Thanks Fred, you're too kind.
Clever idea to build the river down in the board instead of on the board Charlie! Cheers Onno.
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it, stay safe Onno.
Evening Charlie. Hope your and your family are all are keeping well? Really great addition too Chadwick parkway 👍🏻 I use gorilla glue all the time it's really great quick glue and very strong 💪 I've split plenty of wood trying to separate it 🙈 I've had a train moving this week on my layout lol 😂 Thanks for all your videos that give myself and others lots of inspiration to build model railways. Looking forward to seeing the next video cheers Stevie 😎
I'm so pleased that you found it interesting and thanks for leaving such a heartwarming comment Stevie.
Brilliant, it hadn't occurred to cut into and sink the river, I was thinking of raising levels to run over a 'river' . Thanks, very useful video...stay well Charlie
Thanks Simon. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Great video Charlie, I use a material called Pinex for my base boards, so carving in a river is quite simple and yes it does add a extra dimension to a layout, keep safe and well, thanks from down under in Wairoa New Zealand
Pinex, that’s a new one on me. Stay safe Jed.
Charlie, Pinex is used as ceiling tiles or larger sheets 2400mmx1200 and is made of a compressed cardboard, Pinex is a brand name, hope that helps
@Mark Wicks Yes Pinex does reduce the noise quite well and I apply ballast directly to the board, hope that helps
Well Done Charlie, You bring a smile to my face has we are locked down here in Perth Western Australia and can no longer go to Our Model Train Club Keep up the good work from Bill Pickering
Keep your chin up Bill, we’ll get there in the end.
As always a great video Charlie. Being cheeky I’ve noticed a little job you can do during the lock down, if you get bored. Your patio could do with a pressure wash - cheeky I know.
Shhh, Margaret will hear!
That is awesome, great job on the modifications. I agree a job starting point and will look great when you do the landscaping. Looking forward to the future videos on this scene. Thanks for sharing. Ken
I'm so pleased that you found it interesting Ken.
Great Vid again Charlie, looking forward to seeing how this project progresses!
I'm so pleased that you found it interesting Nick.
Excellent stuff again Charles ! Very interesting and very entertaining. I'm looking forward to 'river phase two'.....haha.
I'm so pleased that you found it interesting Jon.
Neatly done Charlie, I could watch you all day! Keep them coming :-)
You’re too kind ZT
Fantastic work Charlie. I thoroughly enjoyed watching.
Thanks Nathan, you're too kind.
Hey Charlie what about the river on the other side of the bridge?? Just use the glue squeeze out for rocks in your river and maybe use plaster cloth and some scoptamode or whatever you use over there and you will have a great looking river.
Thanks Chris, stay safe mate.
superb job on the river Charlie it will look the part when finished.
cheers Nic
Thanks Nick, you're too kind.
Charlie , Wicks sold the blue foam last time I was in the UK , sure it was on their website yesterday..!..!
Thanks Peter, I have heard that it is quite costly. But I’m not allowed out anyway!
Very inspiring as always. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Tim.
"Can't be hard can it? its only wood at the end of the day"
I have said things like this to myself many times before, and they usually get filed under "famous last words" about half way through balls-up number 3!
Still, yours is looking good! Cant wait to see it developing, rivers are always a nice addition to any layout as far as I'm concerned! :)
Thanks Simon, I’m so pleased that you have trust.
Well done Charlie, I'm looking forward to further progress. Keep safe
Thanks david, you too.
Brilliant Charlie. I’ll be looking fwd to seeing how this develops - should be a lot of modelling enjoyment for you. 👍
I'm so pleased that you found it interesting SJ.
