    Back at end of September i drove off of flagpole round down union springs road in the dark. It was also foggy. That was a long 2 hour drive in my 2024 Colorado zr2 truck. Thankfully i put 34 inch tall tires on my truck and it came from the factory with a 3 inch body lift. There were sections on union springs road where you needed a higher lifted vehicle to traverse over rock shelfs and also go through several about 20 yard long deep mud. Would not recommed making that drive after sunset on a foggy night.

      Thanks so much for watching! We were up there during the week specifically to avoid other people and traffic. Saw only one other vehicle and it was parked on a side pull out. We basically had the place to ourselves. On weekends this area can get extremely busy.

    Beautiful views as always, you seem like you love camping. Its amazing to me that people can turn a pristine area into a cityfied looking disaster . Thanks for the video, take care and be careful out there.

    awesome ride up the hill on those crazy roads!! graffiti is bad but at least it looks like people mostly pack out their trash. glad the tent held up in the wind/ looks like you made it out just in time that's some heavy rain! great trip thanks for taking us with you

      Thanks so much my friend. Sorry for the long delay to reply. I been kinda semi retired from YT. It was a fun trip. The wind was crazy all night. Wished we didn’t have to rush out so early in the morning but yeah we beat the rain and had time to do some other things on our way home.

    Awesome...loved it. That was some neat off-roading with a view. I had three Tacoma's and they would go anywhere, great trucks. Thanks for sharing!

      Thanks so much, my friend! It was a fun trip for sure. Views were decent. I’ve had my Tacoma for a couple years now and absolutely love it. Not sure these newer ones will have the same longevity as the older versions though. Previously I was adventuring in a full sized GMC. It was a great truck and I loved the interior space and power but it was just too big to fit on the roads and trails that I want to go on lol.

    Those were some roads you were on! Very much worth it for the views. It's a good thing they keep some of those roads rough, I guess. Otherwise there'd be graffiti everywhere :( . Looked like a fun trip overall.

      Thanks so much for watching! Its a really awesome area, lots of good roads for driving or biking, some decent hiking trails around there too. Just sad to see all that graffiti at that one spot. People. Oh well.

  • @HikeCamp

    Why hike up a mountain when you have a Toyota pickup... Excellent camp Roses... Friday was in the 70s and today winter came back... Woke up to snow on the ground again.. Typical April in WY... LOL

    • @SmellNRoses
      @SmellNRoses  2 роки тому +1

      Haha yes there is some hiking available in this area too but this is one of the most popular spots on the state for off roaders. The views are mediocre at best, but there are multiple roads of varying difficulty that lead to the top. Yeah Spring is always unpredictable, a couple of days ago we also woke up to snow but has the tshirts on by the end of the day lol

    Nicely done! Did you enter Skidmore Fork Road from 33 all the way pass the lake? On Gaia, it shows Skidmore Fork Road off of 33 ends, transitions into a hiking trail then transitions back to a high clearance road.

    • @SmellNRoses
      @SmellNRoses  2 роки тому +1

      Hey sorry for the delay in responding. Yes I turned off 33 onto Skidmore Fork Road. There are other roads and trails that intersect but just stay straight on the main road and it will take you all the way up the mountain. When you crest the ridge you’ll take a right on Union Springs to get to Flagpole Knob. Flagpole is a little offshoot road so keep an eye out for it or watch your progress on Gaia so you dont miss it,

      Thanks for checking it out, my friend. Yeah this is a really fantastic area. Spent a lot of time around there too, off and on. This particular spot is crazy popular with off roaders, one of the busiest in VA on weekends, but most of the rest of this area is pretty well off tbd beaten path.

    Is it necessary to air down before doing this??. Novice to this and 1st time Taco owner. Planning on taking this on tomorrow..

    • @SmellNRoses
      @SmellNRoses  2 роки тому

      Thanks for checking out my video. I actually did not air down on this trip but at other times I have. It depends a lot on the conditions. There’s really only a few spots where airing down would be super helpful. Again it really depends on the road conditions and what tires you have. Sorry if I’m late answering you. Might be rough up there of there’s still ice from a couple weeks ago. Have fun and be safe.

    • @SmellNRoses
      @SmellNRoses  2 роки тому

      Thanks so much for checking it out, my friend. Yes the graffiti is unfortunate but at least its limited to that one spot and they keep it to the manmade stuff like parking lot and guardrails. I guess thats something. Several off road clubs regularly organize clean-ups of that area so other than the one spot it was pretty pristine up there.

    Is your Tacoma lifted and what tires do you have? I would love to take my Tacoma off road up there but don't want to do it on the stock tires.

    • @SmellNRoses
      @SmellNRoses  2 роки тому

      Hey thanks for checking out my video. I have Falken Wildpeak A/T tires but my suspension and ride height are fully stock. I have not yet lifted my truck. My Wildpeaks are significantly better tires than the stock Goodyear tires that came on the truck. That said, i did sone fairly gnarly terrain when I still had the stock tires. I did some moderately difficult trails out in Wyoming and Montana and survived the mud in Kentucky among other places. Your Tacoma with the stock tires is more than capable of running Flagpole. Go out there and enjoy it man.

    • @marineone7507
      @marineone7507 2 роки тому +1

      @@SmellNRoses Thank you for the quick reply. I am going to go out there fairly soon but I think I am going to put on the Wildpeaks first. Are your tire also the stock size? For some reason they look bigger than stock. I really would love to have the fun and see the view you did.

    What is your advice with a truck thats 2wd with auto LSD ? Should i take the chance or just find another trail?

    • @SmellNRoses
      @SmellNRoses  2 місяці тому

      @@JayAquino-ip6wj thanks for checking out my video. If you just want to go up to the top of Flagpole, you can go up from the Briery Branch Road side. Its pretty easy on that end. Dunkle Hollow is really not bad but there are a few steep climbs near the top you would almost certainly spin without 4wd. I’m not saying you cant make it though. You could always go up Briery Branch and then go down Dunkle Hollow, then you’d have gravity on your side in the steep parts. Have fun man.

    Can a stock Subaru Forester Wilderness do this trail(flagpole knob)? TIA

    • @SmellNRoses
      @SmellNRoses  2 роки тому

      Hi thanks for checking out my video and sorry for the delay in responding. The Dunkle Hollow route is pretty easy for the most part. I’m personally not familiar with the Forester but if you have decent ground clearance and A/T tires you’ll probably be fine. I can only think of a couple of spots that you might have to pay attention to your lines but I don’t think there’s any spot you couldn’t manage.

    • @Wilderness_tom_
      @Wilderness_tom_ 2 роки тому +1

      We completed this today in our stock Wilderness. It's about as challenging as the Forester would handle. Be wary of your CVT overheating and have fun! Take the Lake Switzer road up NOT Union springs
