    Editor's notes: Thanks so much for watching guys! This was a LOT of fun to make and I really hope you guys enjoy! 1.Please listen on good headphones or monitors as something like a phone or laptop speaker won't be able to recreate those guitar tones in an accurate way AT ALL. So if they 'all sound the same' please make sure you listen on some proper listening gear :) 2. Only 6L6's have big low-end? How 'bout that Ironball then? 3. So what do you guys think huh? This video is remarkable man, very well put together.
    I listened to this whole video in my studio with two other engineers and we all agreed the Mesa Mk5 had the best clean tone but we were all very happy to agree that the humble Marshall DSL had the best dirty tone for the pick up you chose in the mix. We also agreed that the isolated guitar tracks weren't relevant to us but its great you chose to include them.
    I have played all over the world and you always find a DSL in the hire gear, they are work horses and in the context of a full band sound great. Its really interesting to hear the subtle differences in tone but the really big price differences. Videos like this allow people on smaller budgets to see that there isnt a huge difference as the prices go up. Example I would consider the mesa at almost five times the price of the DSL to be a difficult decision to make, it sounded really close in the dirty tone to the wangs to my ears.
    Thank you for putting out a great video.

    • @alainjean2974
      @alainjean2974 4 роки тому +3

      Stevie, I compared all Isolated dirty tracks. And I found that all of them, except one, sound like they are taking up all atmospheric layers trying to be the most presentable instrument in a mix, and that can leave little room for other instruments to express their frequencies. But I found the Marshall DSL to be leaving a little space in front of it and behind it, hence leaving room in the mix for other instruments, ie: piano, 2nd & 3rd guitars, drums, synths, etc. to sit in a mix. I guess I find the Marshall DSL less muddier and bit cleaner than the rest of them and not so much trying to take up all the depths and space in a mix, while still retaining that crunched distortion.
      I am an engineer as well, and I find the Marshall DSL to be the cleanest and not so much trying to take up all depths and space.

    What this really shows is how little the brand of amp matters for rhythm guitars in a full mix. Speaker and guitar pickup change makes a way bigger difference in noticeable tone.

  • @Knight-brolaire

    Grandmeister 40 was surprisingly great sounding. I think it was the best overall, then the Mk5 35w and MT15/Mini Recto. The bigger amps sounded better unsurprisingly, though there were some really good lower wattage ones. I'm really impressed with the Tiny Terror's dirt tone in particular. It has that really neat growl I've only heard in a few other amps (VHT/Rivera/Revv).

      i have this amp and love it. Bought it early 2022 from Thomanns, shipped to NZ. i was fortunate also that a local shop had an old NOS H&K CC212 speaker cab which paired nicely with this head.

    • @PeterMoore350
      @PeterMoore350 Рік тому

      oh i have a micro terror too (20W). It has a valve/tube in it whic i didn't realise. I can't remember if the valve is for the pre-amp or power amp, but meh - the thing is f'ing loud esp as i live in an apartment. I bought the little 10" Orange speaker for it but the other day i plugged it into my H&K CC212 (50W cab - 2x12 CelestionsV30s) i mentioned above - geez Louise had to turn it down hehe be nice if Orange had a digital reverb builtin but hey ! it's awesome.
      Migt try and find the dark terror too. i think its called that. Bargain for what you get.

    Ok: as I mentioned in the comment below, I own a 6505 MH; and in addition, I also own an Orange Micro Dark. So those are the two amps I personally have to compare with the amps in this video. That being said: My favorite clean tones came from the MT15, the DSL 40, and the Laney; especially the Laney. Those cleans absolutely sparkled! My favorite dirty tones came from the Jim Root Terror, the 6505 MH, the Mesa Mini Rectifier, and the EVH. I gotta say though, I’m pretty impressed with the Wangs! For both clean and dirty!

      I bought an MT15. Just be aware, they're fucking loud for the wattage. Also the half power switch on the back, doesn't make it any quieter, just seems to cut a little low end from my observations. Honestly, it's the best amp i've owned. I've got it going through a harley benton v30 loaded 2x12 and it's killer. Loud enough that i reckon i could do small gigs with it. It keeps up with my mates evh 5150iii in the volume department quite easily.

    You know, I went through this thinking the Mark V:35 would be my favorite just because the mark V has been my dream amp for a while. But after watching the whole thing it actually turns out the DSL20HR is just what I was looking for this whole time. Spanky/sparkly cleans, super crunchy and gritty high gain, I don't need anything more. I mean, maybe the 100 watt version, because more is better right? but let's be real, I don't need a 100 watt head in a little apartment and would have to squash it down with my attenuator to even get it to playable volume anyway.

    I'm so glad they were all done through the same IR on this video! Much better to hear the tones of the actual amp and not just the polish of good production.
    (This channel has done a very good job of persuading me to buy a load box and some Ownhammer packs, though... I was a full mic/cab purist before, now I'm a convert. Technology has come a long way in ten years.)

    I own a proper Bogner Shiva and love it! The dirty sounds are very good as well. What would you think can come close in a smaller package? I love being able to footswitch in different channels

    Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I landed on an ENGL Ironball + a Caline CP-81 in the loop for some extra low end. It's a killer combination. Keep'em coming \m/

    Only clean of the evh and line6 sounded different. All the others sounded exactly the same and have been using a propper headphone. Maybe some cleans sounded a little bit cleaner. Almost was starting to think it was a fake and all audio samples where the same.

    I LOOOOVEE the ENGL, it sits in the mix really well. The presence is reminiscence of full sized head. It sounds kinda "thin" compared with other amp while playing by itself, but as mixing engineer myself, we definitely get rid all those muddy freq tho.

    Great video! Ah ah having every lunchbox amp is almost impossible but I hope you could try one day the Bogner Atma also... :) And some Phaez custom amp (very affordable). :)

    You mention the power amp tubes a lot but the pre amp is where the tone stack circuit is (vox cut tone in the power amp side).
    The tone circuits I believe the are only 6 generally used circuit are generally copied for a Marshall or a fender sound.
    It would be good if you could do a comparison on the tone stacks, ie Hughes and kettner generally us a Marshall tone stack circuit, it's all down to the value of the R C network in the stack..

      I think at this level of scrutiny it can come down to the amount of solder used on the input jack... the most sane thing to do might be to go your favourite colour!
