    Schoeps has so much richer low end and far less noise than the Aputure.

      I agree, the Schoeps is fuller and smoother sounding if that makes any sense. But for the money the Aputure is awesome and would make a great outdoor mic in harsh or unpredictable conditions. If I didn't already have a DPA4017 and Rode NTG3, I'd probably consider getting the Aputure.

    You can EQ the high mids up on the Schoeps very easily, however bringing any low end up on the other mic will add in artifacts in, and wont sound natural. Schoeps are awesome and a go to on ANYTHING. Great video btw.

    Nicely done, that really highlights the noise floor differences. The Aputure has a perfectly pleasant sound and would be very acceptable in most situations, but you can definitely hear why the schoepps has the price tag.

    • @carlosq00

      Once the sound is processed the noise floor differences narrow but not having to process saves a lot of time and $$$. Thanks for watching.

    I 100% hear that the Schoeps destroys it. It's why it's used films. Just like Arri. It wins almost every time for narrative films.

      I bet some work on the back end not much and that Apurture could work well.
      Schoeps is superior and I own one but man that price point for a mic that can handle humidity im the Apurture...tempting because it seems I could tame that hiss with compression expansion.

    The Deity sounds like you're in a server room compared to the Schoeps. The CMIT sounds you're in an iso-room, and a huge difference. Incredible.

    Great video Carlos!
    I also own the Aputure Deity. I really love the sound and built quality, and the super high sensitivity of this mic, but i'm really disappointed with its off-axis noise rejection and self noise. Aputure says the noise level is really low (equivalent -12db), but I have to say that I don't believe it at all. I'm always hearing a loud hissing background noise, even if the preamp input gain is very low. In Curtis Judd video, i hear the same thing (even higher than the super low-sensitivity NTG2 than I've sold to buy the Deity). Even in your video, I hear a very very loud hissing noise on the Deity track, and everytime you're switching to the Schoeps, it's like there is a noise gate that completely blocks the hissing (i know there is not, but that's the effect i'm hearing). So even though the sound/built quality, and price of the Deity is completely amazing... i will probably never be satisfied with it because of this constant hissing. For me, a real noise-free microphone is more important than anything else. If i'm watching a dialogue scene, I rather like to hear a lower quality sound, but totally noise-free... than a super high quality sound with a hissing noise in the background.
    I'd be curious to know what you think about that. Again, really great video!

    • @carlosq00
      @carlosq00  7 років тому +1

      Thank you David. I do hear the self noise that you refer to and while I'm not an engineer it probably has something to do with how sensitive this mic is. I do want to say that this sound was not processed at all. I only normalized to -3db on both tracks. If I had processed the video, I would have used the noise reduction tool to get rid of that self noise or low hiss that we hear during the silent parts. The noise reduction process in Adobe Audition is easy and quick as long as you remember to get more than 3 seconds of room tone (natural sound). If the content that is being created will be consumed on UA-cam or Facebook, then it is also safe to assume that we are trying to reach mobile audiences. At that point, spending $2100 on a mic is overkill. If you're shooting a documentary, commercial or corporate project the audio should be processed and once processed the Deity holds its own very well IMO. In a lot of ways, my comparison of these mics doesn't make sense in that they are miles apart in pricing. This is why I made both tracks available for download so that people can try to process the audio and see if they can get the results they would be satisfied with. Another point that is important for me is how well a shotgun can cut with the Lavs I own. For me, the RODE NTG2, NTG3 and NTG4 or NTG4+ each sounds unique to themselves and matching or cutting between them an Sennheiser Lavs makes for jarring differences in pitch which take me out of the story. In that scenario, the Deity is a much better option, again IMO because the software that you would need to try and get a nice mix out of the Lav and RODE shotgun sources is more than $3K.

    • @davidmultimedia2024
      @davidmultimedia2024 7 років тому

      Thanks for the reply.
      I agree that 2100$ for a microphone that will be used for UA-cam content creation like vlog, demos, and other things of that nature is way overkill. But for serious filmmaking, even if it will be watched online (UA-cam, Vimeo, etc), I think it's really important to minimize the noise as much as possible. I don't want to pay 2100$ for a microphone that will be used for filmmaking neither, considiring it's just a hobby and i'm not making money out of it. I just think that Aputure should have made the Deity less sensitive to keep the hissing noise to a minimum. I'm pretty sure that would not have been more expensive to make, and the mic would have been way more effective. It's clearly not very useful to be THAT sensitive. The legendary MKH 416 is not that much sensitive, and it's perfect that way. Ok, it let's you roll back the input gain of your preamp recorder... but not THAT much. The noise introduced when pushing the input gain higher is still lower than the noise introduced by the high sensitivity of the mic. I've made a side by side comparison with the NTG2 (well known to have a very weak signal, so you need to push the input gain higher and it gets very noisy). Even comparing to the NTG2, I hear more hissing noise coming from the Deity, which is really shocking because Aputure makes it very clear that this is supposed to be a very low noise microphone. What is the purpose of a very low-noise circuitery if the mic is so sensitive that it ads a ton of hissing/room noise. I know that I can use a noise reducer (i'm a sound engineer), but even when adding room tone.. this hissing is still noticeable everytime someone is speaking. To help reducing the noise even more, I need to find the hissing frequency and filter it out using an EQ, but now i'm losing frequencies in my talent voice tone. That's pretty much the only bad thing I have to say about the Deity, and also the lack of low frequencies, but I can live with that. I think the main reason why Aputure can't sell this "PRO" mic at a higher price, is because the hissing-noise it produces is as much, even higher than any "ENTRY LEVEL" mic from Rode, Sennheiser, Azden, Audio Technica, etc.
      Again, i still love my Deity... and i think it is still the best bang for the buck.

      Watching different videos about the Deity I noticed the high amount of self noise too, even though the low output impedance mentioned in the specs, so I decided no to purchase this mic. This is a problem cause it's very notizable when you compress and eq the audio. I agree that it's better to get a clean signal that you can modify later with a "not as good soundig mic" as a Rode ntg1 (it's the one I own) or the Sennheiser ME66 than always depending on processing the audio with Izotope Rx or any other plugin, which is somethig that I think some people has done in their reviews (not in the Curtis Judd review or this one).

    I could tell a difference in the mics about half the time or more when I was trying to pay attention to it. When I really listened, I heard a very noticeable difference in the low end with Schoeps Cmit 5u which sounded really nice on your voice.
    UPDATE: I turned my headphones volume up louder and listened again to a part of the comparison and I noticed the big noise floor difference that other commenters mentioned. Huge difference.

    In a studio under optimum ambiance noise you can very well hear and "see" the difference between the two mic. The Shoeps beats the Deity in terms of audio quality. My moto: if you do not have the money go for the Deity but else go for the Shoeps. The difference is clear. BTW a test between these two mics outside in a town would be most welcome. Thanks.

    The Schoeps' is richer in lows and mid tones. But it's a very good mic. When mics are rich in lows they can sound muddy. This is not the case of the Schoeps. It is a bit cleaner. But the degree of noise is not significant when it is easy to clean up with any number of programs.
    I was personally broken hearted that Apple ditched Soundtrack Pro from their old FCP version. No program I know enable you to edit spoken audio as well and as quickly. Why, Apple, why!!!
    The Aputure reminds me a bit of Audio Technica's better shot guns: lacking smoothness and the lows to mics like my Neumann, but clearer, more compact, and, my guess, easier for some people to hear and understand certain voice types. Like you said, it's subjective.
    One thing I would have liked is to have heard about 15 or 20 seconds of dead air from both mics, to better hear the noise floor and how the mic is picking up room tone. That would give me an idea of how much clean up would be necessary.
    But as far as this test goes: Aputure--impressive for the $$$
    The question: is the relatively small amount of added richness of the lows and mids worth the price difference TO YOU?
    Another test I did with my daughter looking at the screen is turn my back to try to tell which mic was which---just listening on the speakers of my iMac. I'm a professional musician and I design acoustical qualities for musical instruments, so I've got a pretty good ear for color, pitch and tonal shape. Under the normal conditions 99% of those who will hear most video presentations I could not always tell which was which. Of course, with ear phones it was easy to hear, especially IF I turned the sound up louder than I would normally listen to most things.
    So, there's that.

    There is a difference and it becomes more noticeable the more and more you switch. Schoeps sounds more in front of your face, cleaner, more natural and with no mud at all. Deity sounds good in its own place. But I’m sure the Schoeps will handle EQ more smoothly. That’s my take.

  • @tjwalkup7155
    @tjwalkup7155 3 роки тому

    Thank you for this side by side! Learning about the Apurture Deity and it’s ability to handle high humidity I would say it sound like a fantastic mic for the price. I did notice a hiss bit of noise coming from it though.
    The Schoeps cmit5u really sounds amazing. A far more natural mic with a great flat response superior in this test. The price is prohibitive to many film makers perhaps. I happen to own this mic and would favor it for booming indoors for corporate interviews and budgeted high end shoots.
    That being said I think I could EQ that Apurture Deity to be very close so price and run and gun to consider that 300 price point is an incredible value.
    Schoeps better mic.
    Apurture Deity may be a better buy over all.

  • @StudioEinz

    I still would say these microphones are in two differend leagues. Noise floor and frequency response are quite different, my preference clearly being with Schoeps. It would have been interesting to hear off-axis response to see how much coloration to expect at 90 or 180° from these microphones. I do feel that the Deity has some emphasis around 100-200Hz in the reverb, but that could also just be the over-all frequency response? Thanks for sharing the video in any case!

    Great comparison overall Carlos, since you're going directly into the Canon C300 Mk II pres, which probably aren't the best...could the hiss be from that? Also, I know Curtis Judd has the SD633 which he probably used for his test and that is known to have noisier pres. So I'd be curious to have someone try it on a known-to-be-quiet pre-amp to see what factor that is? Or maybe not bother because even if there is some hiss, as you said, its so easy to get rid of it anyway that the cost/benefits of the Aputure Deity mic far outweigh its shortcomings.

    Thank you very much Carlos for this comparison..it makes me sure that Aputure deity shotgun microphone is lost of money.. the self background noisy ( when you don't talk ) is not acceptable at all especially for voice recording..
    Then, all reviews that say the Aputure deity shotgun microphone is similar to sennheiser MKH 416 P48U3 or Rode NTG 3 or other high quality Microphones are fake..All these persons without exception are doing publication for Aputure company or have no idea about sound quality. A great part of them are cheating you.
    sure this year or the next one, this microphone will disappear from the market and will be replaced by an other one.. and you will see the same faces doing new reviews for the new product of Aputure company..this means that they will try to cheat you again..lol
