Following the defeat of Daityas Chanda and Munda, Shumbha, the formidable leader of the asuras, was consumed by rage. He swiftly commanded his forces to assemble for battle, issuing orders to various asura groups. These included the mobilization of eighty-six asuras, the eighty-four Kambus, fifty Kotiviryas, and a hundred Dhaumra families. Additionally, he called upon the Kalakas, Daurhrdas, Mauryas, and Kalakeyas to join the impending conflict.
As the anticipation of battle hung heavy in the air, Chandika, poised for combat, unleashed a resounding roar from her lion, the sound echoing between the realms of earth and sky. Kali, in her fierce might, contributed to the scene with her own bone-chilling roars. A surge of divine energy manifested as Shaktis, originating from the gods Brahma, Shiva, Guha, Vishnu, and Indra. These Shaktis assumed forms, weapons and Vahanas mirroring their respective deities. Brahmani, Maheshvari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Narasmihi, and Aindri united to support Chandika against the impending asura onslaught.
The asura forces, mobilized under Shumbha's command, advanced with determination. However, their collective strength proved to be no match for the united and overwhelming power of the mothers. The individual strengths of these divine mothers were unleashed upon the asuras with devastating effects. Shiva asked Chandika to kill the asuras. Chandika requested Lord Shiva to go to the asuras and tell them to return back to the nether world, and if not, to face death in battle. Shiva did so, but the Asuras chose to go to war. Since then Chandika gained the name Shivaduti, as she had made Lord Shiva her messenger.
All the Devis started defeating and killing the asuras mercilessly. Chandika devoured the asuras who fell to the ground. The powerful asura Raktabija started attacking all the Devis. The Devis attacked him with several weapons, but every time he was wounded a new Raktabija would form out of his blood that touched the ground. Soon the earth was filled with many Raktabijas. Finally Chamunda thwarted Raktabija's regeneration by consuming each drop of blood that oozed out of his body, while Devi Kaushiki attacked him with a multitude of formidable weapons. In the end, when Raktabija was left dry without any blood, he fell to the ground and died.
Thereupon the devas attained great joy. The band of Mothers, intoxicated with the blood of the Asuras danced.
दैत्य चंड और मुंड की हार के बाद, असुरराज शुम्भ, बहुत क्रोधित हुआ। उसने तत्क्षण अपनी सेना को युद्ध के लिए एकत्रित होने का आदेश दिया, विभिन्न असुर समूहों के लोग शामिल हुए। इनमें छीआसी असुर कुटुंब, चौरासी कंबू कुटुंब, पचास कोटिवीर्य कुटुंब और सौ धौम्र कुटुंब शामिल हुए। इसके अलावा, कालक, दौहृद, मौर्य और कालकेय राज्यों को भी बुलाया गया ।
युद्ध का समय निकट था। चंडिका, युद्ध के लिए तैयार, अपने शेर की गर्जना से पूरे धरती और आकाश को भर रही थी। काली, अपने भयंकर बल में, अपनी खुद की रोंगत से इस दृश्य में योगदान कर रही थी। ब्रह्मा, शिव, गुह, विष्णु और इंद्र से उत्पन्न हुई दिव्य ऊर्जा के रूप में शक्तियाँ उद्भवित हुईं। इन शक्तियों ने अपने संबंधित देवताओं के रूप, आयुध और वाहन धारण किए। ब्रह्माणी, माहेश्वरी, कौमारी, वैष्णवी, वाराही, नारसिंही और ऐन्द्री चंडिका का साथ देने के लिए एकत्रित हुए, और युद्ध के लिए तैयार हो गए।
शुम्भ के आदेश के अनुसार असुर सेना आगे बढ़ी, लेकिन उनकी सामूहिक शक्ति माताओं की संयुक्त और अत्यधिक शक्ति के सामने कुछ भी नहीं थी। इन दिव्य माताओं की व्यक्तिगत शक्तियाँ असुरों पर नुकसानकारी प्रभावों के साथ उन्हें ध्वस्त कर रही थी। शिवजी ने चंडिका से असुरों को समाप्त करने के लिए कहा। चंडिका ने शिवजी से कहा कि वे असुरों के पास जाकर उनसे कहें कि वे देवताओं को उनका राज्य वापिस करके पाताल लोक लौट जाए, अथवा मृत्यु के लिए तैयार हो जाए। शिवजी ने ऐसा ही किया, लेकिन असुरों ने युद्ध में रुचि दिखाई। इस प्रकार शिवजी को दूत बनाने के कारण, चंडिका शिवदूति के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुई।
देवियों ने सभी असुरों को क्रूरता के साथ हराया और मार डाला। जो असुर युद्ध भूमी पर गिर जाते, चंडिका उन्हें खा जाती। शक्तिशाली असुर रक्तबीज ने देवियों पर आक्रमण कर दिया। देवियों ने उसे कई आयुधों से घायल किया, लेकिन जब जब उसके शरीर से लहू का एक भी बूंद नीचे गिर जाती, उसमे से एक और रक्तबीज उत्पन्न होता। कुछ ही समय में धरती रक्तबीजों से भर गई। तब चामुण्डा ने बड़ा मुंह करके रक्तबीज के शरीर से गिरने वाले हर बूंद को जमीन पर गिरने से पहले ही ग्रहण कर लिया। इस प्रकार रक्तबीजों की संख्या कम होने लगी। देवी कौषिकी ने उस पर विभिन्न भयंकर शस्त्रों से आघात किया। अंत में, जब रक्तबीज के शरीर का सारा खून सूख गया, तब वह भूमि पर गिरकर मर गया।
इस पर देवताएँ बड़े खुश हुए। मातृगण, असुरों का रक्तपान कर, नृत्य करने लगीं।
