King Suratha was very impressed by the Devi’s greatness and how she killed Raktabija. He asked the Rishi to explain what happened further and how Shumbha and Nishumbha were killed.
The Rishi said - After Raktabija was slain and other asuras were killed in the fight, the asura Shumbha and Nishumbha were filled with unbounded wrath.
Then commenced severe combat between the Devi on one side and on the other, Shumbha and Nishumbha who, like two thunder-clouds, rained a most tempestuous shower of arrows on her.
Nishumbha hurled several weapons such as the arrows spear, mace, club, axe, but the Devi destroyed all of them mid-air with her own weapons such as the discus, trident, arrows and sometimes just her fist.
When Nishumbha fell to the ground, Shumbha got infuriated, and strode forward to slay Ambika.
Seeing him approaching, the Devi blew her conch and made a twang of her bow-string. She filled all directions with the ringing of her bell. Her Lion filled the heaven and earth with his roar. All these auspicious sounds destroyed the strength of all the daitya hosts and their elephants.
Then Kali, springing upwards in the sky, (came down) and struck the earth with both her hands; by its noise all the previous sounds were drowned.
Shivaduti made a loud ominous peal of laughter, the asuras were frightened by those sounds, and Shumbha flew into an utmost rage and attacked the Devi with his weapons.
The Devi split the arrows shot by Shumbha, and Shumbha also split the arrows discharged by her.
Then Chandika became angry and smote him with a trident. Wounded therewith, he fainted and fell to the ground.
Then Nishumbha regained consciousness and resumed attacking the Devi which made her angry. She took a trident in her hands and pierced Nishumbha’s heart with it.
From his heart, issued forth another person of great strength and valour, exclaiming (at the Devi) ‘Stop.’
Then the Devi, laughing aloud, severed his head with her sword. Thereupon he fell to the ground.
Some great asuras perished, being pierced through by the spear of Kaumari, the trident of Maheshwari, the discus of Vaishnavi, the snout of Varahi and the thunderbolt of Aindri. Others were repulsed by (sprinkling of ) the water purified by the incantation of Brahmani, some fled from the great battle, and others were devoured by Kali, Sivaduti and the lion.
Here ends the ninth chapter of Durga Saptashati.
राजा सुरथ देवी की महानता और रक्तबीज के संहार के तरीके से बहुत प्रभावित हुए। उन्होंने ऋषि से आगे की कहानी बताने की विनती की और उनसे पूछा कि शुंभ और निशुंभ को देवी ने किस प्रकार मारा?
ऋषि ने कहा - रक्तबीज का संहार और युद्ध में अन्य असुरों के विनाश के बाद, असुर शुम्भ और निशुम्भ अत्यधिक क्रोध से भरे गए।
तब देवी और शुम्भ-निशुम्भ के बीच भयंकर संघर्ष प्रारंभ हुआ, दो बड़े बादलों की तरह, शुंभ और निशुंभ देवी पर अपने तेजस्वी बाणों की वर्षा करने लगें।
निशुम्भ ने गदा, मुद्गर, भाला, बाण जैसे कई अस्त्र-शस्त्रों से देवी पर आक्रमण किया लेकिन देवी ने कभी चक्र, त्रिशूल, बाण और कभी तो अपने मुट्ठी से आकाश में ही उन अस्त्रों को नष्ट कर दिया।
निशुम्भ जब भूमि पर गिर गया, तब शुम्भ क्रोधित होकर देवी को मारने के लिए आगे बढ़ गया।
उसे अपनी ओर आते देख, देवी ने शंख फूंककर, धनुष की टंकार से और घंटा बजाकर सभी दिशाओं को उन पावन आवाजों से भर दिया । उनके शेर की गर्जना पूरे पृथ्वी और स्वर्ग में गूंजने लगी। इन सभी शुभ आवाज़ों से दैत्य सेना और उनके हाथियों की शक्ति नष्ट हो गई।
तब काली ने आकाश में एक बड़ी छलांग मारी और पृथ्वी की ओर गिरते हुए युद्धभूमि पर अपने बाहुबल से अघात किया। उसकी भयंकर ध्वनि से बाकी सारी ध्वनियां ढक गई।
इसके पश्चात देवी भयानक तरह से हसने लगी जिसकी आवाज सुनकर असुर डर गए। शुम्भने क्रोध में आकर देवी पर अपने शस्त्रों से हमला किया।
देवी ने शुम्भ द्वारा छोड़ी गई तीरों को अपने तीरों से भेद दिया, और शुम्भ ने भी देवी द्वारा छोड़े गए तीरों को अपने तीरों से भेद दिया।
तब देवी क्रोधित हो गई। उन्होंने उसे अपने त्रिशूल से मारा। उससे घायल होकर, वह मूर्छित हो गया और भूमि पर गिर गया।
फिर निशुम्भ को होश आया। उसने दोबारा देवी पर हमला शुरू किया, जिससे देवी का क्रोध बढ़ गया। उन्होंने अपने त्रिशूल से निशुम्भ के हृदय को छेद दिया। उसके हृदय से एक और पुरुष बाहर निकला, जिसने बड़ी शक्ति से देवी को 'रुको' कहा।
देवी ने जोर से हसते हुए तलवार से उसके सिर को धड़ से अलग कर दिया, जिससे वह भूमि पर गिर कर मर गया।
बाकी असुर भी अलग अलग देवियों के शस्त्रों से मारे गए। कुछ कौमारी के भाले से, कुछ माहेश्वरी के त्रिशूल से, कुछ वैष्णवी के चक्र से, कुछ वाराही की सूँड से और कुछ ऐंद्री के बिजली से मारे गए। कुछ अन्य दौड़कर युद्धभूमी से पलायन कर गए, और कुछ काली, शिवदूती और उनके शेर का भोजन बन गए।
यहां दुर्गा सप्तशती का नौवां अध्याय समाप्त हुआ।
