Exceptional! Thank you! You are an Electrical God among men! I am sure I would blow myself up! It's good to know one's limitations... when it comes to electrical problems, I will certainly call apon an expert like you!
I’ve been troubleshooting a ground fault in my house literally all day long. I was laying in bed, defeated about not being able to figure it out. I watched your video and realized I had a line running out to my barn. I walked out there (in the dark lol) and found it right away. You’re the man!
Thank you! You were respectful of the paint and wallpaper while looking for the problem! That was appreciated! The detailed explanations were very encourgering.
Just wanted to help out a fellow electrician with a few tips. At the beginning instead of moving the circuits around to check the breaker, just remove the connected load, then flip the breaker on and verify it has the appropriate voltage coming out of it 120, 240, etc. You don't have to swap it to another breaker. Honestly you didn't have to do anything at all with the breaker. Anytime you hear a loud hum just before a breaker trips, you're gonna be dealing with a dead short. When im dealing with shorts, the first thing i do is determine everything that is on that circuit. Then i turn off every switch and unplug everything from the outlets. Then i see if the breaker will hold. If it does, then flip switches on and plug the items you unplugged back up until the breaker kicks out. In this case, it was a hardwired appliance, device. With those kinds of shorts, your meter is your best friend. Try to find where you can split the circuit in half. Lets say you had 8 receptacles on that circuit with the gate motor at the end. Go to outlet #4 and disconnect one hot. Take your meter, set the dial to ohms and measure between each hot and ground. For a breaker to remain on, you need either 0 ohms (0L) or very high resistance (several thousand or millions of ohms). The hot that has the short on it will show very low resistance
I’m an licensed apprentice electrician currently in an electrical school program! This video helped me out a lot on understanding how to trouble shoot and the thought process behind it thank you for a clear cut video
This video helped me find the problem of the breaker tripping. It was the pump/lift station to out septic tank. So thankful it wasn’t in the house and that we could identify the problem and get the right thing fixed.
Electricity has always been my greatest fear. I've learned that the fear was caused by "Not knowing" how electricity works. Your video was very clear and informative. I'm not a certified electrician, but I've learned through videos like yours how to get the job done, Thank You.
After watching your video I was able to make the repair so the breaker stopped tripping. From watching your video I was able to see how to logically approach finding the problem. Thank you so much.
Good work brother!!!! I’m a union journeyman inside wireman commercial/industrial. Like u said at the end of it the video about being an installer and also knowing how to troubleshoot most of my career we demo and then install. never have to troubleshoot unless something doesn’t work. Most of the troubleshooting I’ve done has been when I was in my apprenticeship doing side work for family and friends. I actually have a side job today after work someone has a tripping breaker so I figure out watch the video to learn something that I didn’t know, I seen at the beginning you and I use the same methodology. But I’m glad I watched your video because I like how you methodically broke down how you were approaching the problem in our field We never stop learning. Keep up the good work.
@11:09: Why would a bonded neutral trip a non-GFCI, non-AFCI breaker? You should have continuity between ground and neutral on a receptacle unless it's neutral-switched.
Also, notice it looks like the conduit out the bottom of the w/p junction box is not even connected to box. Didnt notice ground wire going out conduit either. Rough conduit end could have cut the insulation through both conductors and if you had a dead short to ground and the installer was using conduit to ground it most likely wouldn't have tripped leaving gate, conduit or both energized an looking for a ground (human). Luckily the motor locking up overloaded the circuit causing trip situation.
Great video! Glad you didn't cut out anything. I'm 18 and want to become an electrician so this video helped me learn. I'll be watching more of your videos, I'm from Texas so your videos help a lot.
Very good video and explaining and demonstrating what you did and I have to say my father always tell me you know a good tradesmen when he troubleshoot a problem,90% of the people out there who have a trade cannot troubleshoot the problem. The first thing out of their mouth is you need a new wiring you wire in your car is no good they just don’t know how to troubleshoot. Thank you.
I deal with this crap every day too. It's complicated sometimes but you definitely did the right thing by isolating the troubled circuit. In my experience, I leave the circuit breaker off until I find the find the issue by probing the the hot to ground and where that continuity exists. I have a pair of the Fluke Field Sense T6 voltage testers and they work real good. Nice work Sparky! Ron from NJ!
LOVE how the painted on layers keep the plate cover attached while you work! 🤣I know it takes time, but having links or even the names of your tools would be helpful. If you linked to the product, you'd monetize that effort. But not everyone wants to take the time to mess with that, so completely understand.
I have to say and give you kudos for not saying anything about how they painted over the outlet covers and even the outlet itself. I would never been able not to criticize their paint job. How utterly awful.
I bet the homeowner LOVED you messing with that pretty wallpaper! I've got a mess on my hands and about to get up into the attic to track down wires to figure out wth is going on!

A person who is good at his job has to be able and willing. The "willing" will need one to be responsible and commitment. I am in real estate and I came across quite a bit of capable electricians but unfortunately some of them take short cut to solve the problem and get paid for the day and will not dig into it to solve it once for all, just like what you did. I wish you are in LA....
Great Video! We lost power to outside outlets when using a blower, but the breaker shows to be On for that circuit. All other breakers are on and the voltage at the breaker box shows to be good. This breaker has two bathroom outlets, plus two outside outlets on the circuit. If voltage is good coming out of the breaker box, but it shows zero volts at the first wired outlet, wouldn't the issue be between that first outlet back to the box? Or could another outlet cause all of them to not work?
I suggest double checking your GFI plug. Likely in the bathroom ? Bathroom and outdoor plugs combined was a common wiring strategy about 30-40 years ago when it was decided that outdoor/water exposure required GFI protection. If your GFI won’t reset, that’s likely the problem.
@@jakesully5402 turned out the hot wire at the screw had cracked in half. I saw it was smashed so cut it stripped it back and problem solved. Thanks for responding.
I was moving stuff around in the attic and must have bumped something. I heard a quick buzz and then some lights went out. When i try to flip the breaker it makes that same buzz noise for about 2 or 3 seconds then tripe off. Guess ill start taking junction boxes apart in the attic until i find whats going on. But ill definitely make sure its not the circuit first. Thx man
@5:09 do you need to turn off the main master breaker switch prior to changing a breaker is it possible to not to turn off the main master breaker? I live in a condo and i need to ask the super to turn off the master breaker switch if i want all the power to be off coming into the unit but i do have a breaker panel in my condo that controls all the single breakers. if i can do it without the super it will be better thanks.
Do you have any videos demonstrating a proper load calculation when considering adding an additional outlet on an edixisting circuit? You need a line spitter and clamp meter, correct?
I’m having the same issue in my house 15amp braker keeps tripping a certain section of the house and the detached garage are the once that loose the power . I replaced the microwave outlet and the 15amp beaker and it brought power back in the section of the house that didn’t have any power but my detached garage didn’t get any power. So then I thought the issue was the microwave outlet so I went and put old breaker back on and it tripped so I put back the new breaker and now the new braker tripped agin so I replaced the microwave outlet for the second time and now the braker keeps tripping agin. Any ideas would help thanks. Love the content.
If you have time to respond I could use some help advise ? Working on a mobile home the breaker trips 2 bedrooms no power no lights either. I’ve checked receptacles they look good . There is no attic crawl space in single wides to check the wires . Im little confused on another problem . The living room back wall closest to the first bedroom with no power . It has power and looks like it should be feeding the next outlet because it has power coming out headed to the that room . @@unitedtradesmanacademy1894 Another thing I would like to mention is the fact that my (heat pump) water heater seems to be working okay and my water (well pump) seem to be ok. But my frig won't run. I'm so confused!
Hello brother, I have a problem similar to that, a breaker of 20 is tripping and they breaker feeds 4 outlets in a bedroom, I already checked the outlets and everything looks good, there is no continuity or anything, but I noticed that the cable that comes out of the panel is red and the cable that reaches the first outlet from the bedroom is not red is black .That tells me that the cable does not come directly from the panel to the first outlet. What recommendation could you give me to solve this problem? Thank you
Very interesting but in reality, would you not go to end of the circuit (gate), and wouldn't you figure because of it's age and exposure that that might be your culprit, before testing each jbox?
In a perfect world, yes, you are correct. The big hint was the issue started after an ice storm. As a troubleshooter, you learn to ask “what changed?” Ice storm = likely an outside problem. Keep in mind, the electrician doesn’t know the circuitry of everyone’s house. I bet he only realized there was something else on that circuit deep into his methodical hunt. Often, we see those end-of-line surprises late and immediately realize it’s likely our culprit. Frankly, we just don’t expect a motor to be on a common circuit. He was very methodical in his troubleshooting.
If I could find an electrician like you to trouble shoot my similar situation in an hour, I'd be a happy camper. But I know it's gonna take whoever comes here more like 3-4 hours. It gets expensive.
Hi there, I have the same problem as your video, except my circuit is connected to 10 light poles. Is that mean I have to go through each individual light as you did on the plugs?
Great job BUT, to save time and money why not use Ideal’s in-line and port “wire connectors”. Rather than connecting & reconnecting wires Ideal has push-in / pull-out wire connection. Granted there a little more money but if you have to trace wire from several boxes I find it easier and faster to use Ideals or Wago wire connectors. The Idea is cheaper and faster not to mention Made in USA.

So we know the problem is the wires going out to the gate, but what is it? Is the wire shorting out or a ground fault?
