The signal to noise ratio of this channel is unparalleled and phenomenal. Keep up the good work

The ruling of using art lore or crafting as a grapple check is brilliant.
The artist based character should 100% be allowed to shine over the Fighter in a fight against a living painting.

I would love a more detailled take on how to prep situations. What is it that you prep ? Npcs, maps ? How would you do that in a more challenge oriented game with tactical battles like dnd4e or PF2 ?

I generally like and enjoy much of the advice given on this channel. But the 1:55:00 The discussion about prepped vs. not prepped in d20 games vs. PBTA is the worst take on this I can imagine. What difference does it make the game system you are playing on whether it was a pre-planned set up or an ad-lib moment. It doesn't. This is a mental blockade or obstacle that you are arbitrarily placing upon oneself to make this difference. Playing non-d20 adjacent systems as of late means I may never run a d20 system again, but if I DO, it will be nothing at all like I've done in the past. It'll be minimal prep, prep situations, it'll be running it with a PBTA, BiTD, MYZ mindset. It will be with Monster stats don't matter. It will be I don't have to justify why this Goblin can do that special thing. I don't have to follow player rules in my d20 game for monsters. It's been a mind-freeing, mind-opening experience to play other games systems after being a forever d20/DnD GM for 30 years. A good gaming friend of mine totally disagree on this new awakening I've had as it relates to running d20 adjacent games, but I know I'm not going back to that older philosophy.

Why not play Dungeon World if that's the way you're going to play them? It sounds like your tossing out a lot of the features of these more complicated systems, and it's unclear what you're gaining over just switching to a different system that matches this style of gaming.

@@Mazryik Maybe I should. D20 games are an illusion of smoke and mirrors. GMs use so much time prepping, when at the end of the day the math works out like this: Roll 15 or higher to hit something 3 times and you've overcome it if it's a monster, or one time if it's an obstacle. Minor deviations to and fro from that basic math rule, and you save yourself learning 1,000s of pages of rules, monsters, etc. because all they are at the end of the day is flavor, ie. smoke and mirrors.

"The more you learn the more you realize how little you know"
I've watched all your non-PF2 videos and I'm still learning, and nowhere near a black belt GM/player. We're in the Golden Age of RPGs so it'll be a very long while before you run out of topics. We should call you Sensei Derik 🥷
