When Opie says that shit it really is just fuck with people's paranoia so he assumes when someone says it to him it's for the same reason. It never occurs to him that in his case it might be the truth; that there really is an abundance of people who feel that way about him.
By this point, the guys were making 3 to 5 mil, each, per year of their contract. I think it became a matter of getting trapped by the golden handcuffs -- both Ant + Jim were fed up and wanted to leave, for years, but realized they couldn't realistically find another paycheck for even half the size doing anything else. Opie was frustrated, too, but found other ways to vent his anger, like ratting to management, sulking, veiled threats, etc.
I love how Opie will say “Leave it alone. I’m not getting into it.” Then he will say something to push the argument more by dropping, “people have bad things to say about you…..but I’m not getting into it.”

Honestly it's crazy to see the Opie hate but I get it's new fans and we all felt exactly the same way when we discovered this beautiful show. But after years of listening I'm at the same stage, I honestly thank god for both Anthony cumia and Gregg Opie Hughes, I'm so happy they both somehow crossed paths and gave us this show. Some of the best moments in entertainment media, this is honestly better than most Hollywood movies imo

But I think they both understood what had been quietly brewing for years. Opie immediately comes back with "Oh, so you're gonna make fun of me, like I don't have talent, like I didn't have a successful career before" -- he knew where the conversation was heading. He even goes so far to say "Let's be honest, this goes a lot deeper, it's time for us to go our separate ways," which Anthony 100% would have agreed with, had another 3-to-5-million-per-year gig presented itself.

Both Norton + Cumia have ranted for separate hours about "LEMME TELL YA, LEMME TELL YA, I STEER THE SHIP, I'VE BEEN DOIN RAAAADIO SINCE I WAS EIGHTEEN, AUTISM, AUTISM." Cumia's book explictly outlines a get-close-to-mgmt-as-a-way-to-oust-rivals "to keep some power" pattern.
I suspect the truth isn't all one way or the other -- the guy must have some logistic show-coordination talents, and he stepped up to do the back-room business discussions when no one else would -- but that's a very different argument from "another third individual could have done similarly" or "Jim + Ant could have done similarly, with minor external guidance."
(To be clear, I don't think Jim + Ant could have done the show by themselves, at least not without some order-imposing third -- but that belief and "Opie wasn't well-suited for it and wanted out" are not contradictory.)

By this point, the guys were making 3 to 5 mil, each, per year of their contract. I think it became a matter of getting trapped by the golden handcuffs -- both Ant + Jim were fed up and wanted to leave, for years, but realized they couldn't realistically find another paycheck for even half the size doing anything else. Opie was frustrated, too, but found other ways to vent his anger, like ratting to management, sulking, veiled threats, etc.

Honestly it's crazy to see the Opie hate but I get it's new fans and we all felt exactly the same way when we discovered this beautiful show. But after years of listening I'm at the same stage, I honestly thank god for both Anthony cumia and Gregg Opie Hughes, I'm so happy they both somehow crossed paths and gave us this show. Some of the best moments in entertainment media, this is honestly better than most Hollywood movies imo
