    Canon EOS 300 SLR - Portra 400 : With the accurate light meter of camera and the exposure latitude of the film, it's pretty hard to mess up exposure with this combo. It's up to your composition, the light, and your subject.
    Many people will remember the Canon EOS 300 (or similar) as their first SLR, just like many people remember the digital version Canon EOS 350D (Canon EOS Digital Rebel) as their introduction to DSLR photography

    Great video. I guess these late 90's cameras are a great option if you want something handy more that fancy looking. And of course you can get 3 cameras of that era for the price of one manual camera from 70's. Which is a nice deal, because you can have all 3 loaded with different ISO films (one for evenings, one for bright daylight, one black'n'white for example)

    • @OldCameras

      Yes they are very cheap now, since they were so mass produced and not so much in demand.

    Nice, clean video. I have just picked one of these cameras as I was missing the SLR shooting (have a rangefinder), and it seems to work remarkably well considering how cheap it was (and the plastic build).

    You've convinced to buy the EOS 300, there are plenty out there to buy, on the 'bay mainly, some with and many without lenses. I'm going shopping, many thanks.
    Update (20.6.23), I bought the 300V which again is an amazing camera, but it came with the 28 to 80 (I think) lens. However, I've just order the 300 with the sort after silver 28 to 90 mark 2, multi coated zoom. It'll be with me in a couple of days, and I can't wait to run some film through it.
    By the way that was a nice gentle video about the 300. Many thanks
    Regards Rob

    In the nineties I picked up a EOS 100. Good camera lots of great shots. Still have it sorta. Left it 11000 KM away so bit of a drive to go pick it up.
    Put a battery in it last year and it was still working great. Next year when I am back over in Asia I will probably take it out for a roll or two.

      Yeah unfortunately the Pacific Ocean is a bit much even for Amphibious Autos. So I relent to a 787-800 and enjoy great service from HaiNan Airlines. My previous comment got me thinking about my old cameras. It seems i'm a bit of a litter owner. I've left them all over the world. Digital, Old Film, left where ever I needed space in a bag or it out dated it's usefulness. I used to really keep a very minimalist life..

    Good to see you back. A good alternative would be the Pentax MZ series cameras, very similar shooting experience as using a modern DSLR. You get autofocus, good metering and simple layout. Very easy for folk who want to shoot film but who want it to feel like a digital SLR. 😊

      So true! I got back into film with a Pentax Z70, €50 for the body + two lenses at a local shop (can be had for way less), and when looking at these Canon EOS videos I can’t help but notice the similarities in design and function. Damn nice, easy cameras.

    Nice to see you back. Picked up the first EOS camera, the 650, from 1987 for next to nothing earlier this year. Put a battery in it and it worked fine. Agree with you about the metering, seems to hit it all the time. Also great that they can use every EF lens made from 1987 to date.

    First off, just have to say that your photographs are super great. I love looking at them and would love to trade prints with you someday. Secondly, I have to admit I like working with Canon's plastic EOS and Rebel 35mm cameras. They are easy to find for next to nothing cost-wise and they are so light and fast that they make great street cameras. I regularly use an Elan II for street photography and when I really want to pack light a Rebel G. Sure, they aren't the coolest cameras out there but the results are great and the auto exposure is spot on.

      i have a 3000n (basically the same), you need to put it into any mode that isn't auto, for example shutter priority (Tv), then press the function button until it goes down to the overlapping square icon thing and use the dial to choose how many exposures u want to do. i think 9 is the maximum.

    Glad to see another episode of Old Cameras series by you. Interesting to remember that in the film golden days we could easily get inexpensive cameras that produced amazing results.
    Regarding the film of choice, I still remember the prints I have from many occasions I used Portra. I liked your photos and the colour rendition your brought. The scenarios were very well chosen by the way.
    I quick question, in your opinion what are the disadvantages of the type of automatic loading of the film you mentioned - the fact it rewinds into the canister at the beginning? I have never had a camera with such a system but I wish I had. Curious to know your thoughts on this.
    and thanks for sharing another good work.

    • @OldCameras
      @OldCameras  6 років тому

      Hi Vitor,
      Thanks for watching and the kind words. You are right. It's amazing how we spent the first part of digital photography chasing the quality possible with very average film cameras. Now we're chasing the colour quality haha. We will get there one day I guess.
      In terms of the automatic loading. I'd say the following could be seen as disadvantages.
      1. If you accidentally open the back without having taken any shots yet, you potentially ruin the entire film.
      2. If the breaks, you're pretty much done with shooting the rest of it. In the other setting, you could remove the exposed frames in a dark room/bag and carry on shooting the rest of the frames in the canister. (this is quite unlikely of course :) )

The photos with the Canon EOS 300 almost look like real digital photos - I mean they look like outstanding quality. It is not the organic look of an older Film camera. You know what I mean? But man.. this Camera goes for 20-30€ so it's like a no brainer.

      Hahaha. Well, I don't have one handy, but if I find one I'm sure I'll give it a spin. In the mean time someone has kindly scanned an English manual here: www.manualslib.com/manual/307172/Pentax-Zx-10.html#manual
      You may have already seen it.

    Hi! Can we change lenses while there is a film on the camera? If we change lens will the film burn? Thank you for this video from Turkey ☺️

      Yes you can change the lens. The film is only exposed when the shutter is open.

      Hi, any Canon EOS mount lens should fit just fine.(Not the EOS M though, those are for the EOS M cameras)

    Why do all the photos have a green tint?

    • @OldCameras
      @OldCameras  6 років тому +1

      I'm not sure to be honest. I did notice the tint as well. They are from a "fresh" roll of Portra. Obviously I don't know what they'd been through before I bought the pack. Once I shoot another roll from the pack and process somewhere else.. then I'd be able to isolate the cause.
