If you’re like me then you love anything dark arts related, I love reading and discovering dark spells and artefacts, I love the history and backstory of certain bad guy characters, it’s just something that interests me so I’m pretty excited to talk about Knockturn Alley and the dark arts shop, Borgin and Burke today. We’re going to look at the history of Knockturn Alley first, some of its shops and the kinda people that hang about there. Afterwards we’ll move on the antiquity of Borgin and Burke, how long ago it was founded, why it’s popular amongst dark wizards and why it still remains in Knockturn Alley today. So with that being said, welcome back to the world of Harry Potter, grab yourself a butterbeer and please enjoy todays videos on the history of Knockturn Alley and Borgan and Burke.

The Cabinet was in the shop before Draco was given the task to assassinate Dumbledore. Draco discovered that the Vanishing Cabinet at Hogwarts was connected to the one in Borgin & Burke, after Fred & George forced Graham Montague into the one at Hogwarts and he spent weeks traveling in limbo, hearing things at Hogwarts and at Borgin & Burke. He eventually managed to escape by apparating and once he was recovered, he told the story to his fellow Slytherin. This gave Draco the idea to use the cabinet and made clear to him that in the damaged state the Hogwarts Cabinet was in (Peeves demolished it 4 years prior), he needed to repair it. And that's why he needed Mr. Borgin. Borgin had to teach him how to repair it (which wasn't easy for Borgin as in ideal circumstances, he needed to see the Cabinet to assess the damage...). Combine this with the fact that Borgin would likely not be compensated properly and the high risk involved, it is easy to see why he wasn't all too interested, until he saw the Dark Mark.
But I do find it interesting, that Borgin's first name isn't revealed and personally, I hope J.K. Rowling keeps it that way... It gives some dark mystic to the character, the feeling that he just one day appeared and nobody, not even Burke, knows who he really is, only that he had an uncanny knowledge of dark and priceless artefacts...
BjornV1994 The facinating thing is that in book two when Peeves wrecked the vanishing cabinet at Hogwarts, Harry hid in it's twin when the Malfoys entered the shop. He just didn't close the door fully. The cabinet in the shop is mentioned again when Harry, Ron, and Hermione are snooping on Draco in Book 6. When Malfoy steps out of site behind it while he threatens that guy.
@@DannyBoyPlays Well, Harry hid in the twin prior to Peeves wrecking it, the first happened as a result his floo powder mishap and Peeves demolished the cabinet when Argus Filch was trying to punish Harry and Headless Nick tried to help Harry by having Peeves causing a distraction...
Too many words 🥴
We know this..
I really like the Boegin and Burke shop
Borgin and Burke just sees like a convenient place to get rid of evidence after committing a felony. His policy of "confidential valuation services" is just another way of saying "no questions asked", and if magical law enforcement comes knocking, Borgin just has to say "I didn't ask, they never told" and waive himself of any involvement, or knowledge of just who sold the goods.
Exactly. And that's what makes it so intriguing; it's the wizarding world's "dark side of dealmaking" represented by a shop, if you will.
Last time I was this early, Ollivander family was still selling wand in Rome....
Sooo you have never been early
??????
Skye Dino what dose she mean pls tell me
@@owo4945 OK so the Ollivanders shop in Diagon Alley was originally set up in 382 B.C.. while the Diagon Alley only form after 1500s. The Ollivanders were originally Romans. They moved to Britain and founded the shop in 382 B.C.. They used to sell wands at forums in Rome before 382 B.C. (a forum is a square/marketplace during Roman reigns).

Is it clear enough?🤔🤔
Ye know I am just joking about being so early right?😅😂
I like this alley at Universal. Was soo mysterious and different.
I’ve always wanted to go there! Is it good?
It really was. The lack of light just added to the mystery :)
Agreed! Honeymooned there in August 2014, so great!!!
is it at orlando or hollywood?
@@anix1830It's at Universal Studios Orlando
I was today year old when I learned “nocturnally” stood for Knocturn Alley.
Me, too.
Great timing. I’m in a ‘dark arts’ mood after aggravating family issues and listening to Mr. Nightmare. Keep up the awesome videos my friend.
Batman The Dark Knight Thanks Batman
Batman The Dark Knight At least my entire UA-cam account isn’t dedicated to pretending to be a fictional character and replying to random people. If this is the hardest you’ve cringed you need to open your eyes kid
Mr Nightmare is great but how about Top5s that british youtube channel who oftentimes make ghoulish videos do you watch him?
Dia = day, light. Noc = night, dark.
Good to know
Nox...
Diagonally, Nocturnally
Diagon ally is actually a play on the word diagonally. Harry probably mispronounced it in the second book because of the similarities
Hagrid went there to buy flesh eating slug repellent.
Tom Marvolo Riddle Ive always been confused if that means it eats the flesh away of slugs it repels like necrosis, or if it repels flesh-eating slugs
"They're ruinin all the school cabbages."
So salt?
Harold Trotter And The Flesh Eating Slug Repellent
The dark lord is on UA-cam?
Look out, the wizard, Dean, just admitted he’s fascinated by the dark arts. Doesn’t bode well
Agreed
@JustSomeGuyOnTheNet here we go... everybody go run and tell you home boys and home girls it's time for kenan and kel. They keep you laughing in the afternoon
@@jaysonisgreat So don't touch that dial, don't leave the room!
Merope sold Slytherin's locket to Burke while she was pregnant with the future Voldemort.
I always thought it was probably like a dark magical pawnshop.
yeah that's basically what it is
"I'm Borgin and this is my pawn shop, I work here with my old friend Burke."
@@justinspeaks.1652 "Grindelwald and I got along famously"
Now I want a Pawn Stars styled spinoff based in the Harry Potter universe.

Keep doing what your doing it’s amazing
The first creepy witch was a childhood friend of mine.
Kinda late but....
Do you mean the actress that played her
Cool
The actress?
Ricky Cannon who goin tell her
Well, I would be surprised if Burke was killed off on Riddle's order, considering that A Burke family member was the original husband of his grandmother, Belvina Black, who ended up having an affair with Marvolo Gaunt, which produced Merope and Morfin Gaunt.
Can you imagine if Neville was the one Voldemort went after? It plays out the same with his parents dying and Voldemort’s defeat, and Neville’s the one that has to stay with the Dursley’s. He just gets more brown beaten than he was before, and Harry ends up becoming Palpatine in the future or something.
His parents were not killed
How would he end up with the Dursley’s?
Palpatine or something* 🤣😂🤣😂 I died laughing
He wouldnt end up with the dursleys. Hed go to his grandmother just like he did anyway. His grandma was almost just as bad as the dursleys and shes the reason neville had no confidence in himself. She constantly put him down because he wasnt as instantly talented as his parents. The only difference was neville cared about his gram whereas harry didnt care about the dursleys. If neville did go to the dursleys, for some unknown reason, then hed end up with the same "fuck you" mentality harry had. Neville wanted to live up to his grams expectations but couldnt so he lacked confidence. Harry didnt care about living up to the dursleys expectations and he just wanted to avoid them devising a new torment for him.
Part of the reason the dursleys were such assholes is because harry was a horcrux. Imagine raising a tiny baby for so long and still not caring about it at all. In reality 11yrs of constant exposure to a horcrux turns those around it into assholes.
Petunia was jealous of her sister but she didnt hate her
@@TheBacknblack92 Yes! That explains it

It would mean the world to me if Harry Potter folklore replied to my comment
Try asking a worthwhile question. You never know :)
hey!
Harry Potter Folklore I didn’t ever think you would reply thank you so much
He replied cool
This is very entertaining
I always assumed Burke died of old age, borgin did seem pretty old in the movies, I think he was in the books as well, it's been a while
Best h.p Chanel on yt
THANK YOU borgin and Burke’s is rarely talked about and I love that you bright one of my favorite areas into light!
Amazing
The Knight bus next stop was knocturne allie. Where did the bus access the allie?
oh DON't USE MOVIE quotes
(also it can teleport)
Ricky Cannon same place through the wall and then through the entrance remember the bus 🚎 can shrink and go through stuff that is also ‘movie cannon’
Bird it cannot it goes very fast but does not teleport

@@thelunareclipse4849 well as long as we are using movie canon
I am definately a nocternal beast. Dark is my home, where others are afraid, I bloom.
Okay, 13 year old
Maybe Burke met his end, Becaue he had an accident with of the artifacts? Hardly a heroes exit and not worth mentioning? 🤔
One of me fave Harry Potter video
To be honest, I thought/figured that the shop was just dealing in magical artifacts. Since Voldemort worked there and they bought and sold things like the locket, the cup, and other stuff Voldemort was looking for. No one would go there if the shop was Dark Arts only.
My theories on Mr. Burke's fate:
*1: Death/disappearance/departure of Burke*
A fight between Mr. Borgin and Burke might've led to his death or disappearance. Perhaps it was who would own the business. Or maybe one was gaining more buyers than the other (or most likely, more money). Maybe Burke or Borgin were stealing from the register? It's also possible that decided to leave his position from the argument under threats, or age.
*2: Accidental death/injury*
It l's quite possible that Mr. Burke might've had an accident involving a cursed object in their shop. The curse could've caused him to die, or maybe cause him to be in St. Mungos for years.
*3: Being Arrested*
Burke might've done something illegal to land himself into Azkaban. Maybe it was the unforgivable curses. Maybe it was from an object that was TOO illegal. Or maybe it was his buying and selling strategy, like the one he used on Merope Gaunt.
I think that the first two scenarios are the most likely. Burke was fairly infamous, but the shop had been operating unimpeded for well over a century without Ministry intervention despite it being an open secret that they dabbled in dark arts (and likely stolen goods as well as goods used in the commission of a crime).
Surely, anything that would be connected to the shop would also fall back on Borgin.
@@TheScienceguy77 Depends he may have testified against the other for immunity or whatever the Wizards call it.
I think we know what happened to burke. Refusing the dark lord probably wasn't the best idea. Well not exactly refusing but probably giving Draco an even harder time then he should have.
Name something greater than being on your phone when Harry Potter folklore uploads, I'll wait.
Being on your phone when he uploads twice
Great video
Good job Dean I read the title of the vid and it play so fast I thought I would brake my phone 😂❤️😉
Good video in showing the history of Knockturn Alley as well as Borgin and Burke.
While it's never said in the books what became of Burke, and his only appearance is as a memory in Dumbledore's Pensieve, I just assumed that Burke had either died or just retired sometime before 1992, leaving Borgin to run the shop on his own.
I was just watching a video on The Carlin Brothers channel on the Dark Arts, again (pottermore quiz show they do).
I get done with that video, click home on UA-cam, and this is the first video recommend for me.
Great timing! And as always, great video!
Great video! Funny, I guess I knew but never really thought about the fact that muggles really can't stumble on to Knockturn Alley.
IT'S ONLY BEEN OUT FOR 4 MINS. I'M EARLY!!! Nobody has even watched the full video yet
This is Borgin & Burke’s, and this is our Pawn shop.
Salazar Slytherin Locket? Best I can do is ten galleons.
Great video Dean keep up the good work and great commentary as always
Great solid video! Keep up the good work! 🔥
I'm a Universal Studios park pass holder and I go to Diagon Alley about once a month and EVERY time I go, I HAVE to go into Borgin and Burke, it's my absolute favorite store there! And I almost always end up getting something, they have such amazing things in there.
He probably died from age or got slaughtered by fenrir greyback
Always ~ good info Dean
Knockturn Alley reminds me of the wizarding world's version of skid row or Newark, NJ. Btw I love listening to the Dark Arts best 👍
History of Diagon Alley
I was sad when the video ended. I'd like more on this subject, please. I love your channel.
Love, love your channel!! 👐💖 So talented!
One time, I asked for a video about if Jesus Christ was a Wizard and someone replied saying that some of what he did is actual dark magic, like bringing others back from the dead, so Jesus could be a Dark Wizard (but not an evil wizard).
Alex Downs and Jesus would be a Slytherin
@@jjh2456 no he wouldnt. Hed be gryffindor. Slytherin wouldn't sacrifice themselves for everyone. Harry used dark magic, and even unforgivable curses later in the series because he had to. Using dark magic as a tool doesnt make you a slytherin.
Plus jesus was convinced to open up salvation to everyone and not just Jews. Thats far from a pure blood stance.
Plus the entire gospel is about loving one another, living a good life, and being a good person.
Oh and his stances against violence would also disqualify him
LORD please forgive me for this hypothetical discussion. I do not mean it in earnest.
Stopreadingmyusername Well, maybe Jesus would be a hatstall between Slytherin and Hufflepuff
That's assuming jesus exists in the wizard world.
Thanks for making this! I've been so curious of Diagon and knockturn Alley! ♥️ Love your channel!
When I firsts heard their names I kept thinking they were based on the murderers. But it's Burke and Hare, not Borgin... Still,,, excellent names..
Love the channel, would love to hear your take on what would’ve happened if Tom Riddle’s memory had succeeded in killing Ginny in COS.
So.. basically a dark sketchy pawnshop🤔
Thanks so much for all your time and effort. Much Frosty Love ❄️💙
I like Dark Arts, I’ve been to the Making of Harry Potter in the Halloween period and I feel that Hogwarts should teach DADA and Dark Arts.
Diagonlilly!

The tiny shrunken heads and creepy witches made my day
I remember reading the book and wondering where Burke was. I brushed it off thinking he might of died.
Ah yes in the name of magic that’s definitely why I bought those poisoned candles
No lie on was watching this movie yesterday and this scene came on. As I was watching I knew there was something to be known about this place. Ty dear UA-cam algo system!!

I really love your video's! 😎
Keep up the good work and continue to upload these entertaining videos!
Love these videos!! Think I’ve seen all of your content. Wonderful work!!
I'm pretty sure Dumbledore talks about Burke in the past tense to harry after one of the Pensieve lessons, making me think he died, he was very old so that would make sense
Imagine if burke disappearing paves the way for another prequel
Borgin and Burks shop is also the base where wizards receive the dark mark as seen in the half blood prince when Draco went with Bellatrix and Narcissa to receive his
It’s not where they get their dark marks
Oops, the next stop for the Knigth bus from Diagon alley was Knockturn alley. So, it can be accessed from somewhere other than Diagon alley.
thank you for doing this video I really enjoyed it
another intreresting fact to the Malfoy's being friendly with Borgin and Burkes is that a portrait of former Hogwarts headmistress Elizabeth Burke hung in Malfoy Manor suggested the Malfoys & the Burkes to be related.
Caractacus Burke was never mentioned before sixth book. He did not disappear suddenly, he probably just had died from old age.
Or Tom Riddle killed him, because he tricked his mother. Not for her, but for the locket.
Havent seen the video yet. But i hope so much you explain that freaking hand that grabs Harry xD
Still learning everyday, but HP helps
with the length of time the shop was been open it's possible that Burke was older and died of old age leaving the younger Borgin to run the shop
OMG I Love Your Channel!!!
💋
can you make video about how dolores umbridge got away from centaurs ?
Great vid, as always... I was wondering if there's a video on the story of the opal necklace; I'd love to see it & learn more about it.
is it bad that the dark places and spell are one of the main reason I kinda want to be in the world of harry potter
0:12 i also love researching bad chacatars back stories. For example i used to hate draco malfoy and i researched his back story and now he is my favorite chacatar. Oh and great video.and i also love reading
This is very interesting, especially the information about Slytherin's locket. I had no idea that the locket was so old!
Gotta admit Draco’s as underhanded and sneaky like his ancestors 🔥 if not getting worst like them 🥶
I'd like to learn more on the other stores in knockturn alley!
Awesome 😎 love 💚 the store itself
But the first one wasn't a shrunken head it was a Buddhist head I'm not sure what they're really called but Buddhist monks will decorate mummified head with like gold and gems and stuff
Great job 👍👌
Being a dark wizard is illegal to the wizarding world isnt it? If so, why is the Knockturn Alley not on lockdown since it has dark wizards.
Honestly Burke in that drawing looks kind of hot...
Today was the first time I went to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal Studios. It was amazing and me and my family are going back tomorrow!
I've been wanting to go soooo bad 😭
Love the channel and great vid
Amazing Dean!🖤👌
So question, how do they make large purchases? Do they do what we do using like a check? some type of like official note from gringots stating that X number of money is to be transferred from vault A to vault B? It would seem very impractical to carry hundreds or even thousands of galleons on your person. Even with a feather light charm and extension charm on you money pouch.
Dark arts are so much more powerful it’s crazy
I‘m not particularly interested in the dark arts or cursed objects but rather in special magical artifacts that are mysterious in some way, no matter wether they are connected to the dark arts or not. I‘m a little bit like a niffler, I like precious stuff ^^
Do we ever find out The muggle items Loucious wants to get rid of in the chamber of secrets?
So there is DIAGONALLY...then there is NOCTURNALLY.
