Wild Italy The Italian deer Documentary

Documentary on the Italian fauna of Rai 5, told by Francesco Petretti, on the traces of one of the most majestic animals of the Italian fauna: the Italian deer. Together with other Italian ungulates, it constitutes an important theme for interactions with humans and for deer hunting.
In Europe and Italy, when we speak of this animal we refer to the red deer (Cervus elaphus), also called the European deer, red or real. Sika deer also belong to the same genus, but they are endemic to Japan and have different characteristics. The red deer is now widespread in most of the world and today we will refer specifically to this genus, which like the other belongs to the deer family. This mammal is certainly not indifferent in size: males can measure up to 120 cm at the withers, for a weight that generally settles on 200 kg. The females are smaller and can be easily distinguished especially in the autumn, because unlike the males they are devoid of antlers, that is, what are often incorrectly defined as horns.
The deer is a truly surprising and fascinating mammal, especially because of its majestic antlers which fall and reform each year with impressive regularity. Widespread in most of the world, the deer can often be confused with the roe deer which, however, is much smaller in size and has some typical characteristics that allow it to be distinguished. Fortunately, this animal is not endangered, but some species are protected because they risk extinction. We are talking about a mammal that is hunted because of its meat, but that certainly does not deserve to die for this reason.
The deer is a beautiful animal and when you learn about it you understand how rich it is in charm and symbolism. Another wonder of the wildlife world, which should be preserved like the others.
DO YOU REALLY KNOW THESE ANIMALS?
In fact, there are many studies that deal with, and have dealt with in the past, this species, monitoring multiple aspects and offering a good historical repertoire, thus underlining its great importance in various aspects.
It is the largest Italian hoofed mammal, widespread in the Alps and Prealps. Its characteristic is that it has a greater rate of expansion than other species, a factor that makes sightings more frequent also in the Apennines.
Until the 18th century it was widespread throughout Europe: we are talking about an area then rich in forests, an ideal habitat for deer. The changes made by man for demographic and industrial reasons, combined with the growth of hunting activity, led to a significant reduction in the population. In Italy specifically, already with the improvement of firearms (between the 17th and 19th century), the species almost disappeared.
The subsequent protection and reintroduction measures evidently paid off as the Italian population was considered practically extinct after the Second World War. In 2010, around 70,000 animals were estimated and the highest density occurs in the Eastern Alps. Of particular interest are two deer species present in Italy: the Sardinian one and the Mesola one.

Il documentario è molto interessante. Si vero ci sono degli errori e tra l'altro il parco d'Abruzzo è definito ufficialmente Parco d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise. Ad eccezione di questo, complimenti per la condivisione di un contenuto molto utile per comprendere il comportamento dei cervi, la loro diffusione ed evoluzione, il rapporto che ha con l'uomo ed altre specie animali e vegetali.
