@@silencionomus Agree with all 3 replies. Would venture a guess there's a good chance he went for it as an exercise to see how well he could hold the losing position. Gotta say holing ground that long with a losing opening against Hikaru well into the endgame is impressive. Can't recall a single instance where Duda even dipped a toe into the adventurous end of the pool. Any given day he can grind with the best of them. He's probably the very last player in the top 50 that I would imagine going for a dubious gambit, much less a losing opening, especially against a super gm who is likely the most familiar with the losing opening.

Well anything is possible.. If you remember Magnus played the bongcloud against Wesley So and Wesley even said he would quit chess forever if he looses the game.. In the end, he lost it..

Last year or so Hikaru is probably playing the best I've seen him play in his career. I still wouldn't bet on him head to head against Nepo in a long series classical format, much less Magnus. Even considering Mags seems to be playing subpar for his typical standard as of late & I'm not even a Mags fan.
Over the board skill is just one important aspect of chess. In junior level competition I did not have the interest in studying chess from books, unlike today media like this is an entertaining way of studying positions. And not having a great memory in general, but decent strategy, I often found more success by taking games off book as early as possible. The irony being I didn't even know what was on or off book at that age.
I enjoy playing the Vienna Game against 1…e5 and there is a particular position in the 2… Bc5 variation I have found myself in several times which comes from 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Bc5 3. Na4 Bxf2 4. Kxf2 Qh4+ , after which there are only two good moves for White: either 5.g3 leading to … Qxe4 6. Qe1 Qxh1 7. Qxe5+ Kf8 8. Qxc7 Qxh2+ 9. Bg2 Nc6, after which White is down an exchange and a pawn, but has great activity while Black will require several moves to extricate their queen. Lichess evaluates this as barely better for white, but the position is sharp and many tactics can be tried. But even more astonishing is the defense 5. Ke3 Qf4+ 6. Kd3!, after which the king is temporarily untouchable on d3, and the position is incredibly sharp. Lichess evaluates as barely better for Black, but in the moves that follow, most often only one move does not completely lose the game for either side and extremely precise play is required. White is up a bishop for a pawn and is trying to simplify or get more active while Black is trying to maintain the attack. The suggested line continues 6…d5 7. Qe1 Nf6 8. c4 dxc4+ 9. Kc2 Qxe4+ 10. Qxe4 Nxe4 11. Bxc4 Nf2, and White will give up the exchange on h1, in the end being a bishop and knight for a rook and pawn, slightly worse but definitely in an unclear endgame. However that series of moves is incredibly tough to calculate over the board and if you know how to use the position it’s very easy to neutralize Black’s attack and come out better before move 12. Anyways, a fascinating and bold line for you to try out in a quick time format against your friends at the bar and the library, if you are into goofy king positions!
No, I just have up to Kd3 memorized, the rest I double checked. It’s not a line I get often - most Vienna games get Nf6 or Nc6 on the 2nd move and then after Na4 most people will retreat the bishop, even though sacrificing on f2 is actually considered best by the engine. So I usually have to remember how it goes every time I get it, sometimes with disastrous consequences for myself as well!
"And it is now as of move 3(!!!) that we have a completely new game.". Paused the video. Checked the players ratings. Okay, lets continue.... Hikaru stayed nice and calm in this one. Well deserved. :)

That opening is called the Fried Liver Attack to those who don't know. There's a counter for it called the Traxaler Counterattack.

I played the bong cloud throughout today and most online players didn't know how to punish me effectively.
In the hands of a GM, that Bongloud is no joke. Yes he lost BUT it took Hikaru VERY CAREFUl moves to win. It definitely was not a walk in the park.
