I’ve found the easiest way to fill the piping bags (for this Russian tips process) with the multiple colors is to lay out Press and Seal by Glad on the counter. Spread out the outer color on it. Then put the other in the center. Roll it up around the inner color. Twist both ends of the Press and Seal. Snip one end and then just drop it in your piping bag with the tip. It makes clean up a breeze and it doesn’t get all over your hands. Hope those directions make sense. Love your videos.
I love your honesty, thank you for not cutting those "fail" parts, makes me feel better as a newbie in bakery that even experts can find some techniques challenging at first! Subscribed!
These bring me back to Russia circa 90s. Instead of cupcakes, these tips were used to decorate Flower Basket sugar tartlets. Lined with jam, topped with a heaping swirl of Italian meringue and decorated with mousseline cream flowers around the perimeter, they were everyone's favourite. Always first to sell out, if any were available after 3 pm, it was a guarantee a new baker made a mistake and used plain buttercream all around.
The tartlets sound lovely. As a newbie in pastry, your comment sent me on an online educational detour into different types of pastry creams. Thank you!
Wish I had seen this video before my disaster try at cupcakes using Russian Piping tips...I used whipped icing and didn't realise I needed to hover and pull up. Thanks for this video, I will try to find my tips and try again. Love your videos and also thanks for showing your mistakes...the same mistakes we make. :)
I always did a softer buttercream by heating it up. This made it easier to manage and pipe out with a much smoother look. At work we used a torch and hit the side of the mixing bowl while it was whipping. At home, an alcohol lamp is better than a candle, perhaps a heating gun if you don't want open flames... No black streaks from the wax. For sharper colors, I sometimes like to load the bag with another bag fitted with an eclair tip as you can get several different colors that way. I also like to use just the tiniest spot of dye and touch the inside of the edges with gel color using a toothpick. You get the streaked effect that way. great vids!
Its official this guy is my new favorite go to for baking. I find myself accidentally coming across him on here and pinterest and i always go back to his goodies info over everyone elses lol
a tip might be to pop the buttercream in the fridge for a bit before you start piping so it’s a bit more stiff and then the buttercream will soften up again afterwards :)
I don't normally comment on UA-cam... But I watched this video a couple weeks ago. I had already purchased a set of Russian tips to try for my daughter's smash cake. Tonight I made a test batch of cupcakes and thought I'd try the new tips! Thanks to your tutorial, I did pretty well!
My first attempt with Russian piping tips was an absolute disaster, it scarred me and I haven't touched them since 🙈 Wish I'd had this video to watch first! You did such a beautiful job and now I think I'm going to give mine another try!
Hello! . For Christmas I used your recipe for spritz cookies ( traditional and delicious, thank you), but put the dough in a piping bag with a balloon tip to make flower cookies. I was pleased with the outcome. I striped the bags with beet root colored dough to make pinkish poinsettias. Thank you for your clear instructions and kind manner of sharing all things baking.
Thank you for sharing!!! I learned a lot. I have always wanted to try these. For a delish buttercream frosting, I LOVE a Russian buttercream. Everyone who tries one of my frosted cupcakes is amazed at how good it is without all that sugar.
I used those Russian tips to make a Birthday cake for my daughter and topped it with a crown. I love those tips, but every time I am using it, I need to practice a little to find the right way to handle it. I am using American Buttercream
I also have been trying out my russian piping tips, no such luck yet. I am very impressed how easy you made it look, and thank you for not cutting the "fails" out of the video!!! I also have been trying out the "balloon" tips... Beautiful!!! My kids and husband loves to eat up all of the experiments!!! Happy piping and decorating everyone!!! :)
Your decorative icing talents are truly admirable. How about using them to create buttercream succulents of the botanical kind? Hens and Chickens, Aloes, Jade plants; the varieties are endless. (And occur in endless color variations.) I've never seen this done before, but I'd love to see you pull it off.
If you would like to see some succulents, check out Sweet as Cake by Jenna Kieller from Port Elgin Ontario, Canada. Some of her stuff is simply amazing.
When looking for new or different ideas and see your page I stop and watch. You have a great way of presenting, interacting and sharing. I love your voice and the way you show how to do each step. Its like "see this its just like this, you can do this" and it does just like yours. Made Meringue cookies off of your video and they came out perfect, just like when I was in grade school. Just realize that for every comment there are hundreds that watched, you are reaching so many people and being one of those wanted to say thank you.
I bought a set about 6 months ago. When you get the hang of it, they are indeed amazing! You, of course, learned a damned sight faster than I did! They look amazing! I bought the ball tips you mentioned as well. The ball tips really made short work of 6 dozen cupcakes for a wedding shower. I got a three-way coupler to use with them, so the frosting was a beautiful tri-color. I did use a soft American buttercream for all. Great video!
I purchased those tips more than two years ago and tried them once using swiss meringue buttercream and let me tell you that it was my first and last try... my so called flowers were ugly enough to stop me trying again... but after watching those lovely colorful flowers of yours I got the courage to try again.. fingers crossed
Coffee cake ...😁 ❤ .... YES , YES , YES ....HOW COULD THEY HAVE MISSED THIS OPPORTUNITY $$$ ?? I can't even bake and here I am , glued to his videos and actually beginning to think I want to give this a try !!
Just make sure to experiment with a batch of American buttercream first. That’s really all it takes. You will be surprised at how lovely they look. Using a mirror to see how you are doing is genius.
You are adorable AND super informative. I just found your channel because I am cooped up with the quarantine. I am over 50 years old but I took a Wilton decorating class when I was in 8th grade - thats how far back my cake icing obsession goes. Since I grew up in the 80s, I associated "preppy" ala Pretty in Pink as the stuffy pompous so I actually avoided your videos. THAT HAS ALL CHANGED! You have now redeemed my appreciation for the entire genre because of your aesthetic. Now back to your amazing tutorial videos. I have been searching for DAYS on the right icing to use for my new Russian tips because a lot of the Pinterest photos showed cracky irregular points that reminded me of my worst work in high school. Now you have answered the question! It's all about Swiss meringue. Your video on Swiss meringue is perfection on it's specificity. Thanks for being awesome!
You did great with them especially for first try. I love these tips. Korean buttercream makes beautiful flowers with these tips for events like easter, weddings, and mother's day. A good regular american buttercream recipe makes for great colors for all kinds of events. It just takes a little practice. Hover just about the cupcake and then don't pipe them to high. But a thicker buttercream is the way to go. Hope this helps. :)
I have used both Swiss and American butter cream for the piping tips , must say it easy to use American butter cream that Swiss . Your turned out better than mine. 😀
I bought some of these tips about 2 years ago and gave up after the first use. Your channel has really gotten me out of a baking rut lately. I'm pulling those tips back out this weekend and trying again!
I just got my first set of Russian tips a couple weeks ago. Thanks for this video because I haven't used them yet because the multiple color technique intimidated me. You're awesome.
I did too! I'm finally going to attempt to use them for birthday cupcakes this weekend. It's just at the in-laws and not some hi profile thing so if they don't turn out I'll get out my trusty airbrush machine and do that. I can't mess those up!
Hi! OMG! After watching you this morning, I tried for the first time decorating with Russian Tips. Not easy...at all..you make it look easy! I followed your directions and used light and dark pink, purple and made green leaves with a Wilton tip. Some of the flowers came out 👍 great. Some ...kinda wilted..but I'll keep practicing. Thank you for all your fantastic videos and recipes. You give me...great ideas and incentive I love you!
For the first time I've actually seen someone make these pretty. I never really liked the russian piping tips because they seemed so bland, but it made a huuuge difference that they were multicoloered holy moly, and that you used a softer buttercream :) great job!
Wow really nice enjoyed well explained always love to watch you cook bake Thank you so much I also brought Russian piping tips .I am also going to try thank you for all the tips you have given.
I wish I had seen your tip for using a glass to hold bag to fill, before I made my daughter a cupcake bouquet for her birthday. I'd never decorated cupcakes before. Definitely a learning curve using the Russian tips. Even though my flowers and leaves weren't perfect, they still looked pretty and my daughter liked them!
Wow, thanks so much! I made Swiss meringue buttercream today and had a terrible time loading the pastry bag. What a great idea to use a glass to support the bag when loading, that never occurred to me! Also, your two colors in the same bag is fabulous and your Russian tip flowers look so beautiful with the two colors. I will try again tomorrow!
i love the light shades you use in your icining. Your work is so beautiful and neat. And also you are transparent enough to let us know the correct nozzle numbers to use. Thank you. Bless you.
You are so good. I've watched so many videos and bought my own and have gotten pretty good and then here you come on your first try and make such beautiful ones. I love the colours you chose. :)
This channel is so wholesome. I love your sense of humor. I've wanted to try these piping tips but they're a bit too intimidating... and also I don't bake things that need this kind of decorating. But I still enjoy videos like this. :)
I kid you not! In the weekend I was looking at our local online market place (equivalent to Amazon or eBay if you like) here in New Zealand and saw all those Russian cake tips for sale and instead of buying them straight off I thought to myself ...hmmm I wonder if John from Preppy Kitchen has come across these yet and bingo, I see your video. Thank you so much for creating a video about them and trialling them for us all. I'm going to have a go now as a result of your video and tutelage. Thanks, a lot and a big hi from New Zealand :)
This was awesome.!!!!! If I were having wedding I would give everyone a cupcake like that as a thank you ... Just beautiful... I will definitely get some of those .
Omg those cupcakes are beautiful! I love how you explain things. I really need to get those tips to decorate! You make it look easy 😊👍🏽💕 love the video 😍
I love how you’re so transparent and you don’t try to make everything look like it always goes perfectly. These were beautiful!
Wish I could say the same thing about this man's teeth...
Completely agree its so reassuring to see that he too makes mistakes
How beautiful 💖😍🙏🏻✨💞😍💖🌹😍💖🎶🤗💞🙏
I know! Makes me not feel bad on my first attempts, haha.
Brycie Cook exactly, i love the way he shows that he isn’t perfect with everything he does
That box of food colouring!!

Exactly!
I have it on my Amazon wish list. 50 different colors for the low low price of ONLY $110.00. And that's is why it's on my WISH list. Lol
Thank you @@FaithRoss2817 !! 😊
@Melanie Ross Me too! Mortgage payment or an amazing array of colorings.... 🤷🏻♀️

I do the same! I love the results!! :)
I saw YOLANDA (UA-cam channel)put the colors on the plastic wrap using full large piping bags. No mess!

“Perfectly Using Russian Piping Tips!”
I fixed your title for you 👨💻🤩
Preppy Kitchen well you’re certainly quite the natural! Though I’m not surprised ☺️
Mine on the other hand are still sitting in my baker’s rack 😅
Um, I think you need to fix your sentence. Lol. Instead of writing, 'I fixed you title for you', it should be 'I fixed YOUR title for you.' LOL

so sweet

This might be the best, most honest tutorial on Russian tips

You can Try again
I used an American Buttercream when trying these. I found having the icing slightly chilled worked best.
Or make the butter cream a bit stiffer
I used a buttercream from Soviet era Ukraine ... my cake glows in the dark.
@Michael Persico 🤣🤣🤣
Can we use whipping cream to make them?
Juveria Khatri ive never tried it. You need something stiff enough to hold the forms of the petals. Maybe a whipped icing?
You perfected piping with Russian piping tips these are so beautiful the best I've ever seen

Thank you for sharing!!! I learned a lot. I have always wanted to try these. For a delish buttercream frosting, I LOVE a Russian buttercream. Everyone who tries one of my frosted cupcakes is amazed at how good it is without all that sugar.
The recipe for Wilton's "stiff consistency" icing, is a stable medium for the three dimensional Russian tip flower.
those colors are so beautiful
This video is in the 999,000 views range. I think it deserves a couple million, personally.
I used those Russian tips to make a Birthday cake for my daughter and topped it with a crown. I love those tips, but every time I am using it, I need to practice a little to find the right way to handle it. I am using American Buttercream

Oh my gosh! This is amazing but I am sure it would be super challenging for this beginner. None the less, I am ordering Russian tips right now....

God it’s so beautiful ❤ you have great taste in color combination.
Wooow You are creative.🙋🏻♀️👌👏🌹
I love mine! I use them at work all the time. I find that a Swiss meringue buttercream flows best through these tips.
I'm doing cupcakes. Will this icing hold-up as they sit around waiting for the ceremony to be over and all the congrats?
This may be the finest russian tips tutorial I ever saw. Lots of details and smooth silky buttercream. Nice work
I would say the Swiss buttercream is perfect for these tips.
Thank you for showing this real old newbie guy your mistakes! It makes me feel better when trying and things don't go so well. Love your channel too!!
That is really pretty
Thank you for showing us
I like watching your cupcakes and your bunch of food colors.
I love them!!!
I liked the "tulip" tip with the mauve petals and yellow stamens best. They are all so pretty.
When I discovered Russian tips, they blew my mind away. I have to try them ASAP 🙏🏼
Wow!! They’re really beautiful.

Thanks for the post Sir I love what I saw amazingly beautiful and perfect colors. You're awesome person Sir medical student Malaysia. ✌💙
I would rather watch John learning to use Russian tips than I would an established expert show off with them.
I really love the way you showed even ur mistakes..now I wont be discouraged when I would try it..
The most gorgeous cupcakes I’ve ever seen! Patience & a real steady hand! Amazing !
Yours are the firmest looking flowers I’ve seen made with Russian tips. ❤️❤️
Thank you. This really helped to understand how to should get the 2 separate colours in the bag.
Oh my! I bought some of them a few months ago and promptly put them away because they are intimidating! Now I can get them out and try them! Thanks!
Too pretty to eat! ❤❤❤❤
Я просто не могу смотреть на ваши тортики спокойно😊,

I think the tulips are my favorite 😍🌺💕
Tulips💗💙
The last piping tip is DEFINITELY my favorite
Never underestimate the beauty of baking. Haha! I love your vids, upload more and more in the near future. Thank youuuuu!
Thank you! I purchased some over a year ago, used once and put away. But because of this video I'll be pulling them out of retirement😉
You are so good. I've watched so many videos and bought my own and have gotten pretty good and then here you come on your first try and make such beautiful ones. I love the colours you chose. :)
Thank you for making this fantastic video you have helped our daughter no end she’s really improved so much with her piping knowledge and skill
🤗
A beautiful explosion. Thanks for sharing
Hello! I am a amateur baker and I grew up in Russia, the cakes in the stores in Russia always have flowers
This channel is so wholesome. I love your sense of humor. I've wanted to try these piping tips but they're a bit too intimidating... and also I don't bake things that need this kind of decorating. But I still enjoy videos like this. :)
Beautiful ... simply beautiful ... the problem is that they are too nice to eat ! 😉
Just beautiful. 💙
Yes thank you for being transparent with us! This is great!
You did great, John! I'd love to see a cake decorated using Russian tips along with your buttercream flowers.
I’d like to see a combo cake too!
So LOVE it 😍
So a UA-cam baker said that American buttercream was rubbish! Prove him wrong! I love it!
Thank you 💗
Absolutely beautiful 👌👌
Omg those cupcakes are beautiful! I love how you explain things. I really need to get those tips to decorate! You make it look easy 😊👍🏽💕 love the video 😍
You have a real talent for decorating as I have a real talent for eating cupcakes with buttercream. Let's always be friends.
