Making buttercream flowers elevate any dessert and making them is much easier than you think. The most important things to have are the right piping tips, buttercream that's the correct consistency and a little patience. So many people asked for a full step-by-step on piping roses and peonies so I hope you'll find this fideo helpful! I love using flowers like this to embellish cakes and cupcakes.
Some Hints for Getting a Nice Flower:
*Make a small batch of extra thick buttercream to make a cone-shaped base for the flowers.
*ALWAYS sift your sugar. Any lumps will clog your tip.
*Storing your flowers in the fridge will make them easier to handle when it's time to apply them to your cake/cupcake.
*Add food coloring a little at a time with a toothpick for maximum control.

John!!! You're incredible! I've never attempted piping flowers before, and I was very intimidated. But after watching a few of your videos, I felt inspired and capable, so I went ahead and tried it! I just made a birthday cake for my grandmother and it turned out BEAUTIFUL! It's a brown butter cake with buttercream frosting (your recipes of course!) and it's covered in buttercream roses! Thank you so much for being a wonderful and encouraging teacher!
So happy you've enjoyed the videos and thanks for the kind words.
Need a photo of your cake!? Well done! X
Thanks Emily for your feedback 💖.

YOU ARE THE BOB ROSS OF BAKING!
Thank you for all of your peaceful, yet informative videos! Very glad I stumbled upon them! ♥️
Yes!😂
I think I fell in love when he said that if you mess up you can just eat then and no one will know. Some day I want a dream man like this to make all the cakes for me. :) :d
Jade flowers ... 😂😂😂 ....love your comment ❤👍 !!!!
banana banana who told you that?
@@ath1y793 look it up, he mentions his husband in his videos and it also says he has a husband if you look it up
@@bananabanana9129 yeah he is gay and? The OG just stated that she wanted a man like that NOT that she wanted John himself.
@@beatriceladouce965 uhm? I dont know if i came off harsh but, i didnt mean it in a bad way. I dont know why you sound so mad?
The thing I like about your videos is that you don't play a lot of annoying music in the background. Its just your voice that I can focus on while backing because you speak to the point.
Your free 10mins tutorials have so much more knowledge than the $100 day baking class I joined.
I can’t even tell you how happy this video made me. Learning to make these flowers is one of my goals for 2020. Your videos are so easy to understand, and that encourages me to do this. Also, the short cry of a child in the background at one point makes you relatable. Even though my children are grown now, that just sounds like home. Thank you, for your videos. I’ll try not to eat too many of my mistakes. If I do, I’ll totally ruin my other 2020 goal of slimming down. 😊
Nice your comment
This guy definitely needs more views . Love how he makes everything look so neat, so simple and yet elegant . New favourite channel now.
Loads of love from Pakistan :)
I stick with the artist, because as an artist you should know when to stop and surely you know to build a piece of art to perfection, without overdoing or underdoing it.
Sana Raja nhhhgh
100% agree... I discovered him yesterday and hooked. Love from Canada 🍁💓
Sana Raja got it!!!!!
Sana Raja too much competition and too many videos on UA-cam
I love the slightly ruffled edges on the petals of these, absolutely gorgeous!! Thanks for the tutorial.
Excellent teaching and videography. I really appreciate that he doesn’t have annoying music in the background. The very subtle backbeat is just fine.
Hi John, love your videos. Thank you. I've got countless tips... in storage...hundreds of miles away... I've discovered a decorating kit in the kitchen of my now-late MIL. It's...plastic... the flower nail is a stick thing that looks like a stylus, AND as a bonus, the icing bags are approximately 8 inch by 4 inch and open on not one end, but BOTH. I'm going to say "Thank you God" and do what I'm able to with it. And I'm going to get pics. Wish me luck.....
Hi John! You should have your own TV show. Seriously. I don't bake. Never have. Never was interested. Until now :)
Anyone that can get me interested in baking is a marvel.... And where's your Patreon? Pls get one 💓

Pip ....❤❤❤❤❤ ... love , love , love your comment .... omgosh , same here !!! I just found his channel and can't stop watching his videos ....I can't even bake 😳😂 !!! He is an incredible artist ... the michaelangelo of cake - making ... it's so rare when someone can touch your soul like that and who would ever think that a cake - making / decorating video on UA-cam could do that.??? 😁 . He is such a nice , good - natured human - being too !! He SHOULD have his own show on the food network !!!!! Best wished 👍
I've never seen anyone do their bases of flowers like that. So neat.
My grandma taught me how to make these when I was a kid. Loving learning some new techniques from this.

I love the tattered edges on the petals. Seriously, I can watch you do this all day. It's the most satisfying thing!
I watched this video at least a dozen times for study and just piped the most gorgeous flowers for the first time ever! Followed your buttercream recipe and everything worked out beautifully. Your channel has become my "me time" for the moment...thanks for bestowing your magical skills with us!
Pretty and realistic looking roses 🌹

Irene Lao omg yes!
I read this in Fleabag's voice
You've sold me! I think after this tutorial, I'll be upping my game and enjoying the process where I used to stress over it. Thanks!
And even if this is an older video, I love the look of these flowers- the filmy frilly petal edges, and the softer colors are a stunning combination. Thank you for the tips on icing thickness, I never knew that and my flowers always failed miserably, and I became intimidated with this. Well, thank you for helping me get the courage to try this again.
OMG I love the idea of using a turntable instead of a flower nail. I always struggle with a nail... either turning too fast or too slow
Betty Janzen Practice, practice, practice!
Oh... Seems like you can't get the sales right for the outer petals though...
Thank you Chef, really enjoy watching your videos.
This is the most accurate and detailed tutorial I had ever seen. I will subscribe on ur channel... 🤗🇩🇰
Thankyou ,very good ! I feel I can do that ! Very clear instruction and no horrible music , I’m very happy with your tutorials , easy on the ears lol
Always delighted to see a video from you, they make me smile!
These flowers look like peonies, which are my favorite! The light pink ones are the cutest!!
Same. Love peonies and the soft pink is so pretty.
All the years I’ve been piping flowers on a nail , this looks so much easier on a turntable but it’s the first time I’ve ever seen it done ! I really don’t know why I didn’t think to do it...lol.....looks fabulous!! I have my daughters wedding on Saturday and I’ve got a cake and about 150 cupcakes to decorate so I’m gonna give it a try! Thank you so much ..
Wow 150. Do you freeze the cupcakes before decorating?
I'm making my first wedding cake & I think you're gonna get me through it. Thank you. ❤
A PATREON PAGE ... PLEASE !!!! Your videos are my absolute favorite - such high quality production with the perfect balance of providing valuable information without a bunch of extraneous talking. So peaceful to watch! These flowers are STUNNING - I can't wait to practice. Thank you so much!
I've never seen the trick with using the thickened buttercream as a base, that is such a good idea! Thanks for the video, it was super helpful :D
I have never seen such realistic looking buttercream flowers. I worked in an Italian bakery where we made everything from scratch (except the canoli shells.) We made roses and buds with a flower nail, and they looked like pretty bakery frosting flowers The ones that you made look like real flowers. ❤️
This video is so helpful. Making this for my wedding cake..... Thank you....
Dear John ! you are my teacher! I sincerely thank you for your generosity! the whole world sells its knowledge. I learn everything from you..
"Just eat the buttercream, and no one will know" 🤣🤭🤫
I saw this comment just as he said that! XD
Looool 😂😂
Good idea! LoL 🤣
Lol I wanted to see him eat the flowers in the beginning
Only my hips lol
Hi John, I’m a new cake artist and I usually don’t watch a lot of cake UA-cam but I absolutely love your videos!!! The energy you bring and the kind nature you have is brilliant. Thank you for making my day ❤️
This is SUCH a great help! I can use my turntable, instead of trying to control the 'nail' as I turn and make the flowers..also I see how you stiffened the 'core' ..Yes, if that is weak, it makes it very hard to keep the petals high...I loved the demonstration..Thanks so much!! Wendy
Dude, the thumbnail just looks like a bunch of actual flowers. Amazing work.
Thank you so for sharing your techniques for such realistic flowers- you are a true artist (and your cakes aren't bad either 😉) such inspiring ideas, love this channel!!
I just want to thank you for creating your content. It's 3:42 am and I finished my little girl's 5th birthday cake... the cake is nothing like the art you create but thanks to you it looks decent, maybe even good!! I am soooooooo grateful to you!! 🌸🌸 warm wishes to you and yours!

If you fail, eat the buttercream. I'm so busted.

You don't have to fail to eat the buttercream
And nobody’ll know haha

Honest to God you are the Bob Ross of cooking and baking! I wish you had in person classes, especially on your baking masterpieces, as my artistry skills are limited to my makeup and eyelashes!😃. You are amazing!
Thanks finally a great video on buttercream flowers 🌸
Absolutely amazing. I have saved ed thousands of $$$ by decorating cakes since the 1973. Just for family & friends. Wedding cakes, etc! I wouldn’t trade this skill for anything!!!
Your work is Amazing!
I am here just for visual satisfaction and his personality.
I love using the soft colors too - peach and pink. Very soft, pretty and classic.
What type of buttercream do you use for the flowers? I love your videos. Awesome
I was touched by your words when you said "If you messed up just eat the buttercream and no one will know". I felt like making mistakes is ok and nothing to worry about. So if you don't want to waste the failed buttercream just eat it and no one will know haha!! You gave me an idea!! thank you for your advice!! 😊😊😊
Finally a lefty

Wow! You are awesome ! Thanks ! They are breathtakingly beautiful !
I don't want to eat them. They are WAY to beautiful! :)
I'm so blessed that i found this channel.
I love how you use the matcha powder fo the leaves
I love your tutorial, precisely what I need. You always bright my day with your smile and comments.
Do you have a video on transferring the flowers from the paper to the cake? This part is like magic to me, like how on Earth do you get it moved without destroying the flowers?!
I think you’re supposed to chill the flowers until they’re firm in the fridge then cut them off and transfer to the cake. Hopefully this helps 😊
@@belladoes Thank you! I was wondering the same thing. This makes sense, though.
Wow the peonies are stunning
Can you make these in advance and freeze them? Or store them a certain way until ready to use?
I LOVE your videos so much! You have a very calm warm energy about your that every tutorial is so therapeutic to watch. I feel so calm but yet so inspired after having watched one of your tutorials! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Gorgeous flowers! Can you show us how you move them and place them on a cake, please? :)
Carol Forde well if u pipe them onto the parchment and the freeze them they come right off and you can just drop them on the cake
@@frozensardonyx3945 I know this. I'd like to see it, if that's ok?

Very beautiful..
Kisses from Brasil,
I love painting flowers and I also like the cakes and food decoration with flowers.
Thank you for this video has given me good lesson and ideas to make my cake more good looking.
Hi, im a new baker and I've been watching all your videos. I have been having trouble with the buttercream. Im trying to make my flowers like yours but my buttercream seems to be too runny. I've tried thickening it up with more powder sugar but once i start to pipe it gets runny all over again. Do you have any tips for me on how to make it come out like yours? I never get that realistic look to my flowers. Thank you!
have you tried using swiss meringue buttercream? it's far better then the american buttercream for piping and getting those extra details
Swiss buttrcream is best... but also watch the heat - from your hands. If it starts to get too soft, place the piping bag in the fridge for a minute - not much longer than that. I have a problem with my work area being too warm... so I’m popping mix in and out of the fridge a lot. One other option is to have a glass bowl sitting in another glass bowl that has ice in it... the piping bag doesn’t really touch the sides because it’s filled with buttercream, but the cooler air around it really helps... it’s like a mini refridgerator.
Fantastic! You explain very well, in a very easy way. I prefer this lighter colors too, it's fancier. Thank you so much for sharing!
can I use other kind of buttercream? like the swiss or italian?
I've never seen it done on a turntable instead of a flower nail. Definitely will help me learn how to pipe directly onto the cake. Thanks!
Beautiful!!! Which buttercream recipe do you use for these amazing flowers? Thank you
