Making buttercream flowers elevate any dessert and making them is much easier than you think. The most important things to have are the right piping tips, buttercream that's the correct consistency and a little patience. So many people asked for a full step-by-step on piping roses and peonies so I hope you'll find this fideo helpful! I love using flowers like this to embellish cakes and cupcakes.
Some Hints for Getting a Nice Flower:
*Make a small batch of extra thick buttercream to make a cone-shaped base for the flowers.
*ALWAYS sift your sugar. Any lumps will clog your tip.
*Storing your flowers in the fridge will make them easier to handle when it's time to apply them to your cake/cupcake.
*Add food coloring a little at a time with a toothpick for maximum control.

John!!! You're incredible! I've never attempted piping flowers before, and I was very intimidated. But after watching a few of your videos, I felt inspired and capable, so I went ahead and tried it! I just made a birthday cake for my grandmother and it turned out BEAUTIFUL! It's a brown butter cake with buttercream frosting (your recipes of course!) and it's covered in buttercream roses! Thank you so much for being a wonderful and encouraging teacher!

I can’t even tell you how happy this video made me. Learning to make these flowers is one of my goals for 2020. Your videos are so easy to understand, and that encourages me to do this. Also, the short cry of a child in the background at one point makes you relatable. Even though my children are grown now, that just sounds like home. Thank you, for your videos. I’ll try not to eat too many of my mistakes. If I do, I’ll totally ruin my other 2020 goal of slimming down. 😊

Hi John, love your videos. Thank you. I've got countless tips... in storage...hundreds of miles away... I've discovered a decorating kit in the kitchen of my now-late MIL. It's...plastic... the flower nail is a stick thing that looks like a stylus, AND as a bonus, the icing bags are approximately 8 inch by 4 inch and open on not one end, but BOTH. I'm going to say "Thank you God" and do what I'm able to with it. And I'm going to get pics. Wish me luck.....

Carol Forde well if u pipe them onto the parchment and the freeze them they come right off and you can just drop them on the cake

Hi, im a new baker and I've been watching all your videos. I have been having trouble with the buttercream. Im trying to make my flowers like yours but my buttercream seems to be too runny. I've tried thickening it up with more powder sugar but once i start to pipe it gets runny all over again. Do you have any tips for me on how to make it come out like yours? I never get that realistic look to my flowers. Thank you!

have you tried using swiss meringue buttercream? it's far better then the american buttercream for piping and getting those extra details

Swiss buttrcream is best... but also watch the heat - from your hands. If it starts to get too soft, place the piping bag in the fridge for a minute - not much longer than that. I have a problem with my work area being too warm... so I’m popping mix in and out of the fridge a lot. One other option is to have a glass bowl sitting in another glass bowl that has ice in it... the piping bag doesn’t really touch the sides because it’s filled with buttercream, but the cooler air around it really helps... it’s like a mini refridgerator.

Fantastic! You explain very well, in a very easy way. I prefer this lighter colors too, it's fancier. Thank you so much for sharing!

I've never seen it done on a turntable instead of a flower nail. Definitely will help me learn how to pipe directly onto the cake. Thanks!
