    At 26:32 Brock does a shoulder shimmy to his left and the linebacker chasing Jennings just stopped in his tracks allowing Jennings to be wide open. That's 10 year vet stuff. Damn.

    As a former QB it must be frustrating watching people bag on Purdy and fall in love with the athlete QB. Here's a guy who has the right footwork, timing, read, accuracy and wins. While they fall in love with the mega-athlete who has trouble getting to the 3rd read, and throws with zero "A" but has a cannon.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn

      Agree. People who actually know football value QB accuracy, scheme understanding and execution, anticipation, footwork, timing, etc.
      I'm FAR less impressed with QBs who can run 50 yards or throw 70, but miss the easy reads.

    • @nathanchildress5596

      For real, I played quarterback for a year, badly, but I still know that everything I was coached on Brock does to perfection. He never forgets about his feet when he pivots for a throw, kinda like playing shortstop in baseball which I was good at. That along with the ice in his veins and his decisions make him the best quarterback casuals don't notice.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 5 днів тому +5

      @@nathanchildress5596 Brock's Dad was a minor league pitcher who almost got called up to the majors. Some of Brock's build and fundamentals remind be of baseball. Your shortstop analogy is excellent. Pitchers also need to pivot, plant and throw well to the bases.
      Agree Brock has excellent fundamentals, including footwork. It's mostly textbook/teach tape.
      In that way he reminds me of Drew Brees who usually had (to have) excellent fundamentals and mental game, in part to compensate for his size.
      Brock also scrambles very well, especially near the pocket. Much better than Drew and part way to Russ.
      Anyway, a REALLY good QB. People who can't/won't/don't see it don't really know ball or aren't being honest.

I can't blame them, it was awesome, but they don't always realize that's not what makes you a good quarterback. The quiet fundamentals Brock Purdy has which keep the 49ers running like clockwork while he stays out of the spotlight just don't translate to folks who don't know to look for it.

      @LacSlyer 5 днів тому

      Not sure, he wouldn't move his feet if this was a look off. He sets to throw to the right, then changes to the left and then back to the right. That takes up precious time and is a waste of movement. A look off would be turning his head and shoulders, not his whole body. If it is a look off it's a lot of wasted movement that takes time and can screw up mechanics, just don't see why he'd go that far with it.

      @@LacSlyer it is hard to say for sure but trent gets pushed back towards him which makes him take a step right at the moment he "moves" to look left. The Jennings/Purdy connection is low key what makes this team great. Purdy throws with good anticipation to everyone but with Jennings it’s like their two halves of the same brain. Every game there are 2-4 plays that they make together that litterally can’t be defended, it’s SF’s version of the Tush Push.
    Next offseason someone has to go and it will probably be Jennings left without a locker but man what a special combination.

      @@paulidson1483 Very true. When you play behind two guys like Deebo and Aiyuk, it's inevitable you're going to get somewhat overshadowed. But there's no doubt that Jennings is a great player himself, he does everything the team asks him to do at 100%, and he makes the most out of the limited touches he does get. It's a bit like how Greenlaw tends to get overshadowed playing next to Warner, even though he's a top-10 linebacker in his own right.

      No, if you've ever played QB, you don't make fakes like that on the fly. The game is too fast. Fakes by the QB are mostly preplanned. We are going to look left and throw right. We're going to pump fake to get a CB who has a tendency to watch the QB to bite. We're going to play action fake to pull up the LB. You're not going to decide to do a fake mid progression. He went 1-2-3 then back to 1. Kyle will likely ask why he didn't throw it to 2 or 3. JT knows this because he has actually played QB. Fans watch film and come up with some far-fetched ideas.

      While it can appear like he did this, he wouldn't - or at least shouldn't - move his entire body to do a look off. A true fake would be him moving his head and shoulders, not his lower half because that's wasted movement and time that can screw up your throw. A great example is Stafford's no look pass in the super bowl, he looks to his right to move the LB, but his feet stay aligned to where he's throwing.

    Here’s the thing about pre-snap shift shift motion: it’s tricky. You’re asking a lot from these guys. Your linemen gotta stay set, your backs, tight ends, and wide receivers all need to know exactly where they’re supposed to be. This isn’t something that just happens; it takes a ton of coaching. And let me tell you, the penalties that can come from illegal motion, drives everyone nuts! The coordination it takes just for one guy to move before the snap, that’s tough on a lot of teams. If you don’t get it right, you’re looking at flags and a whole lot of frustration

    Appreciate you breaking down that play early on to Deebo where he got too choppy with his cut. I think more casual observers look at a play like that and think Purdy could've made a better throw, but I like that you parceled that out to show that the route was what needed to be better. Had Deebo done a better job and caught that ball, plus Aiyuk catching that absolute DIME in the endzone, Purdy would've been 22 of 29 (76% completion), but instead went 20 0f 29 for a 65% completion rate. THAT'S how small the margins are from being good to great. Excellent breakdown JT!

    Firmly good, solid game by Purdy that could have had the stats to look great if Juice was just a little more fleet of foot (though he is a FB and not a WR or even a HB...can't be too mad that he's not the most fleet of foot athlete on the field) and more importantly if 30mil a year did 30mil a year things like haul in a perfectly thrown pass in the endzone. Turns out playing catch in your front yard doesn't quite hit as much as showing up to work(to include training camp) like a professional.
    My ass is going to stay burned about that until he starts doing 30mil a year things like hauling in perfectly thrown passes in the endzone (or otherwise getting a number of TD receptions)😡

    This "Anticipation" thing by Purdy always marvels me and puzzles me because he is so gusty. He makes his throw to a spot when no one is there. If his receiver doesn't make it to the spot, it's easily an interception.

    • @frankl3518
      @frankl3518 4 дні тому

      Thats how Shanahan teaches it. Same thing Tua does in Miami. It's what Jimmy G used to do. It's called timing. Ecspecially these guys that don't have huge arms. They have to throw it early. You're "anticipating" your intended reciever being in the spot you throw it

    I would give anything to hear players like Deebo, Kittle, Juice, and Aiyuk talk about the differences of Brock being QB compared to Jimmy.
    It’s obvious everybody loved Jimmy off the field. Seems like a great guy and a great leader. But it was obvious he made his receivers work so much harder to catch balls, constantly had to jump on overthrows and many got injured. Brock seems to hit guys in their stride almost every time.

  • @theaverageDon
    @theaverageDon 5 днів тому +1

    Ya know, after watching these film breakdowns on Purdy the past 2 years, I feel like his hesitation on that fake toss-swing screen-double basic route combo- play could easily be explained as it being a newer play design, maybe even for just this game plan
    Reasoning, Purdy's best attribute is his anticipation on throws. If it's a recently added play, perhaps he didn't know how exactly this defense would play it. Especially when the play begins with Purdy taking his eyes off the defense to do the fake toss, then reset. Add in coverage disguises by the Jets, he didn't want to just guess
    Similarly with that ill-timed 3rd down throw that could've, and probably should've been picked. Every so often Purdy's ability to anticipate can be a double-edged sword if the defender doesn't play it as he imagines. Has happened many times in his career so far. It being 3rd and 2, he probably assumed there wouldn't a single high safety deep, and anticipated a 1v1
