Whenever I listen to this song, it makes me feel as if I am still a good person. It reminds me of the good folks back home used to be in my life and had been very kind to me.
Am I the only one who got teary-eyed while watching this? It's like Dolly is singing to my soul and I'm being wrapped w/ a warm blanket. I love you, Dolly. You are my angel, my rock and my heroine. 🦋❤️
Quite possibly the very best of Dolly Parton and country music too. Never ceases to amaze how heartrending the words and it's phrasing are. Pure genius!
I saw this concert live at her Heartsong theater in Dollywood...this song has always been a special favorite..Smoky Mountain memories keep me strong..thank you Dolly for that 1994 concert
I haven't heard this song in three years, and I still remember the lyrics. Such a powerful performance. The audience is dead quiet and witnessing this fantastic singer doing what she does best- singing
Dolly singing better now than ever. One of the purest country songs ever, had everything that makes country what it is. Musicianship here is awesome.could listen to this 100 times and still be amazed. Thnx Dolly, band, and whoever posted it!
My parents moved to Chicagoland from Georgia in 1962. The plant where my Grandfather, Father and Mother closed down two weeks before Christmas without notice. My Father's brother had moved to Chicagoland to go to work for US Steel in Gary, IN. He told my Father how much he was making in unionized wages. My Dad left the day after Christmas to join him there. Two weeks later, my Mother, and two of my siblings joined him there. My older sister was in the middle of a school year so she stayed behind with my Grandparents. I was only fourteen months old when my younger sister came along, so my Mother basically handed me off to my Grandmother. I was there all the time so I stayed behind as well. When school was out, my sister joined the family up north. I remained with my Grandmother for the next four years. Unfortunately, her health began to fail following a light stroke. I was commanded to go north when I started school. Long distance calling was expensive but we called Grandma and Granddaddy back in Georgia almost every week. I cried for them every time I heard their voice. This song speaks to everything I felt.
such a powerful song about the heartland of americana country ... love how authentic and raw dolly is ... truly one of the greatest artists of all time ❤️
I left the mountains after high school in 1961 and took off "up North" because there were no jobs to be found. I can still remember lying in bed and being so homesick crying quietly, missing my family and friends (and a girlfriend) back home. I think of this every time I hear this song.
This song has been written about in scholarly works about Appalachia, as has her song Wildflowers. She is more than an entertainer - more than she has ever been given credit for.
Don't usually comment unless moved to.....definitely moved to......This IS talent and years of dedication to musical art.....The way it should be....entertained because your moved by the artist and his/her incredible gifts....not entertained because of their looks, how far or high they can jump while singing, or impressed by the fireworks. The term "artist" is used far too liberally today. Dolly is one of the few "true artists" in country and bluegrass left.
My favorite Dolly song.

It's Smoky (without the 'e'). Smokey is the bear. Smoky are the mountains.
