- Created by Glen A. Larson, this 1984-1985 CBS-TV action-adventure series focused on Dani Reynolds (played by model Jennifer O'Neill), a fashion photographer who gets into the spying game after the murder of her CIA agent husband. Actor Jon-Erik Hexum originally played her model/partner, but after his apparently unintentional suicide in the fall of '84, he was replaced by Antony Hamilton.
My dad was slowly dying when this show and Airwolfe ran. I tried to be around and watch them with him. Anytime I think of Cover Up or Airwolfe i remember my dad. My dad's health declined even faster after this show was cancelled. He sometimes could not even sit through Airwolfe towards the end. He would have a stroke on Valentine's day 1985. He died 10 days later. It's the stupid little things you remember. Nuking the popcorn, getting him a cup of coffee during the commercials and the forgettable banter. RIP DAD

When I was young I really liked this show and the actors. They did not ham it up but played their roles well and made the series interesting to watch. It was a real shame the actor lost his life. Like everyone else, I agree he would have gone to bigger things as he acted without showing off and stuck the right chord. I liked the actress, too. Good memories.
When I was 5 or 6 years old, in the 1980s, I used to hear this theme music come from our living room when I was in bed. And never knew what my mother was watching until now. The power of the internet!
I was so sad when I discovered Jon was gone. I had such a crush on him. RIP ❤️

It’s crazy. I was 3 & 4 years old when Coverup came on tv, & my grandma & I used to watch it. I fell in love with the man & the song. To this day, whenever I hear that song my heart starts beating faster. Especially nowadays, the words couldn’t be truer. John Erik’s cousin is a news anchor in my town. His name’s Eric Paulsen.

Even now at 46 yes old I can't listen to that song without thinking of my first crush . Watching the us masked singer , someone started to sing Hero & my daughter said mammy do you want me to turn it off . I'm eye s got a bit wet one or two tears .( I was back 11 yrs old again) . No it's fine it's a nice song ( I told my daughter the story along time ago ) . So she Google it as I could not remember the name of the show or his name . I've near forgotten the crush or hurt his passing gave to me as a child . RIP 🧡💛💜🖤💙💚❤️ .
In the 80s this guy was the most handsome man in the world. But really sad to hear one day that he died of a gun accident.

Great 80s show with an awesome opening sequence. I remember getting goosebumps just watching the opening and hearing the music. As a 12 year old, Jon-Erik Hexum was my hero. I wanted to enlist in the army and become a green beret. Ah the memories!

@@AirwolfArchive They got another actor to play a different character doing the same undercover job but the ratings went down so it was cancelled after the first season.
CJPDeQueen I'm aware of that, but I was asking the poster above whether the show saw its entire season on British television. For example, "STREET HAWK" with the hi-tech motorcycle (starring Rex Smith) was cancelled after 13 episodes on ABC in the US. Here in the UK, ITV picked it up. But after the first 5, they dropped it. Low ratings. I wondered if "COVER-UP" suffered a similar fate. On the BBC.

@@AirwolfArchive yes it did - it ran for the full season - i remember watching it on bbc as well with antony hamilton after jon erik hexum- it was a double shame - obviously for jon erik's death but also a shame cos anthony hamilton wasnt bad at all but didnt stand a chance filling those shoes. they should have ended the first season with the episode after his last when she was alone and then started a second season after a break fo rantony hamilton - maybe that way it could have worked

Richard Anderson was basically doing the Oscar Goldman thing on this show. Jon Erik Hexum was on the cusp of becoming a superstar. RIP to both actors
I really think Jon-Erik would have exploded in popularity if only he hadn't had that one deadly moment of stupidity.

Didn't really watch the show, but I was still a pretty big Jon Erik Hexum fan (through The Voyagers!). Just really saddened that his life was cut extremely too short by a senseless accident. Just wish he would have left the gun alone. Who knows if he was still with us, just wonder how big he would have got. RIP

I totally agree, he was so handsome. That freak accident really saddened me. He would have been a big time star/celebrity he he was still alive.
I only heard about this second-hand, so for years, I assumed that he committed suicide while filming the show, and shot himself intentionally.

I loved this show when I was young! John was talented and very good looking. Someone mistakenly explained to me that he had committed suicide back then. Just now hearing about the accidental death of the Cinematographer on Alec Baldwin movie set and they brought up Jon’s accidental death! Now I know what really happened.

The performer of the series' theme song is E.G. Daily, the same voice actress for Tommy Pickles in "Rugrats".
Ah, I remember being maybe 6yr old or even older, always watching this show late at night, loved the actor and the song. One day after the film there was a note that the actor accidentally died during filming, which was devastating news for me; and it was already couple years since he died. It was a shock for me being so young then, and I remembered this for over 30 years...

Yeah I miss Voyagers too. It was cool during the closing credits how they’d say “If you want to know more about (fill in the blank with this episode’s historical figure, make a voyage to your local library.”

Richard Anderson played Oscar Goldman in The Six Million Dollar Man on ABC. I completely forgot he was in Cover Up. If Jon-Erik Hexum had not accidentally shot himself, the show would have been big as the 1980's went on. Rest In Peace Jon-Erik and Richard.

Jesus Christ, my mum was so in love with that dude, this was back in the days before instant knowledge and the internet so you didn't find out what happened straight away, I'm sure it was originally considered suicide. She was so gutted when he died. It was a really cool tv show and frankly a really fucking stupid way to die.

He Said That All Sets of Various Tv-Shows Always Keep All Of The Prop-Guns Under Lock And Key! Somebody Wasn't Doing Thier Job Apparently. Love hate relationship with this show. As a young kid I loved it between this show and The Green Berets I knew what I wanted to do with my life. Become a Green Beret! Little did I know what was in store for me. 1st the Ranger Regiment then Special forces selection and later OTC "CAG". Never got the super model but I found the REAL meaning of BROTHERS!!!!

I was about 8 when he died and I was convinced I was going to marry him. My mum started acting shady with the Sunday paper one day, looking at me anxiously, my parents broke the news a I was just a crying, devestated mess.

As a kid, He was also doing the show ?Voyagers?, or whatever it was called with the kid teaching history lessons. Cover up was good, but liked that other show better.

Just for the record. RIP. During the shooting for an episode of Voyagers, Jon grabbed a prop gun full of blanks. Blanks are still made with gun powder and produce force when fired. He, unfortunately, was kidding around, put the weapon to his temple and pulled the trigger. The force of the blank charge broke away the thin temple bone and forced it into his brain killing him after a massive hemorrhage.
Very sad that he died from something totally preventable.
@@FerrisSOCAL While he did Voyagers and Cover Up, Voyagers was first. The shooting was during Cover Up. He was only in 8 episodes of Cover Up, all of Voyagers.

Hexum died from a gun with a blank in it according to the news at the time. Not totally unlike the incident on the Rust set.

Since they had to get permission to use the song they should’ve used the original. More powerful beat and would’ve worked perfectly.

T-Bone Hubbard *CO*-creator of “Magnum, p.i.”. He barely even worked on the pilot. Wasn’t there for the entire series.

T-Bone Hubbard I’ve seen them and I’m afraid you’ve got it wrong. Don took over and practically rewrote the entire script that Glen had written prior. The only elements that remained from that early draft of Glen’s, which of course were central to the show, were: the Ferrari, estate, Robin Masters, the title and the basic genre, ‘tried and tested’ format of an exotic detective show in Hawaii. That was nothing new or original. It had been done before by previous producers.
Glen didn’t see the final cut of the “MAGNUM, P.I.” pilot, until Don showed it to him (after filming and editing was done). He didn’t do any day-to-day producing on it, as Don took over entirely. It was Selleck in fact who insisted that *HE* didn’t want to do the two-hour with Larson whatsoever, as he hated his draft of the script. Don recalls this in the meetings he had with both at the time in his interview.

Yup, never heard of this show before and just got done reading about Alec Baldwin's prop gun killing and learned about Jon through that and looked up this show. Feels like a rabbit hole learning about actors that were accidentally killed onset and not knowing about any of them. but my mom remembers it being such a big thing, just an odd feeling

No. The actual series theme music was not by Bonnie Tyler. It was much better! Bonnie did the cover version which was a big hit, but she has a deeper voice and the tempo was slightly slower. I think that nearly everyone preferred the original version, but only Bonnie Tyler's was available.
Gooday! Glad to be of service. Back in the 80's my little sis was a huge fan of Cover-up and had a big crush on the hunky leading man, who died tragically during the making of the series.. She as crazy about the theme music too but was so disappointed by Bonnie's version that she didn't bother buying it. Instead she audio- taped the soundtrack direct from the TV and played it again.....and again...(.Aaaarghhhh....)
