- Ashley Hlebinsky, the Robert W. Woodruff Curator at the Cody Firearms Museum, share's a close up look at the recently famed "Great Basin Gun"--a Winchester Model 1873 found leaning mysteriously against a tree in the Great Basin National Park. Ashley and her team of curators at the Cody Firearms Museum were tasked with preserving the severely weathered firearm in its current state for display at its permanent home the Great Basin National Park.
The Cody Firearms Museum is one of five major museums including a research library at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming. Visit the Cody Firearms Museum and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming in person or online at www.centerofthewest.org/explor...

Years ago probably around 1995 I was at the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming and the original Winchester 73 used in the James Stewart movie Winchester 73 was on display there and in the summer of 2018 I was at the Great Basin Park Headquarters at Baker, Nevada and this Win 73 was on display there.
lol. I did the very same thing. I was Elk hunting with a Hawken percussion rifle. I laid it up against a tree to take a leak. Because I also had a pack on my back when I was done with my business, I grabbed my pack and started down the hill. My partner and I saw an Elk, when we both went to draw our weapons, I went to draw mine and noticed I did not have one. The pack strap and the gun strap on the same shoulder felt the same so as I was walking did not notice I left my rifle. Needless to say my partner was pissed off at me as we hiked back up the mountain. I was fortunate enough to have found my rifle up against the tree but when I heard the story of the rifle found up against the tree, I just wondered and had to laugh. Humm . . . . wonder if he did the same thing I did? Peace, Reese
Definitely a possibility? Sure makes ya wonder?
Thank you Ms Hlebinsky for the interesting and engaging overview of the Winchester rifle, the history and what the Center is doing to preserve that piece of American history. I have observed your commentary on Gun Stories and you are to be commended for your professionalism and expertise. Please ignore the silly emotionally underdeveloped comments from the posters who fail to appreciate that we need more women like you making a career in the shooting industry. You have become a role model for many young women who enjoy the shooting sports. I have yet to make it to the Buffalo Bill Center and it is on the bucket list for a visit in the future. Please keep us posted on what you and the historians find out about the rifle.
+A Paul Reed Amen to that. Believe it or not, I am Limey in England BUT I am an owner of a Uberti 1866 Winchester replica which I love and shoot regularly. I am utterly fascinated by this rifle and want to know just how far the restoration will go.
I reckon shes trump supporter. Just sayin
@@bobstevens5968 🤢 🤮 I hate living in trumps shadow. Since I'm a republican I'm automatically a Trump supporter but I'm not
I'd love to know the story of the person that left it there.
Great video! Keep up the good work, Ashley.
Well dammit... I live in Cody and I had no idea the museum had this piece much less had it on display. Guess I'll have to drive all the way to Nevada to see it now instead of half a mile.
Those bears are like. "Oh yeah. Nothing to see here just hangin out."
I've been to the main museum in 1980 while heading for Yellowstone and the Tetons.Great museum
Good job! You really made that story come to life with your infectious enthusiasm!
Very cool, Thanks for the update
Where is the brass elevator?
Nice baps. Bring back sexy history.
That was a wonderful video!
That is an amazing find.
Very cool!
So know one has walked up to that tree that could have seen that rifle in 100 years, that's amazing.
About the cartridge in the stock (I believe that's where it was found). I have read that old-timers who had isolated cabins/shacks in the wilderness sometimes kept back a spare cartridge in case they were driven out in horribly cold weather by a fire or other disaster that destroyed their dwellings, their clothing, and the rest of their supplies. It was a last option to quickly end suffering in such a desperate situation. I don't know how true this is, but it makes some sense I suppose.
She can curate my firearms any day.
Funny,I often find myself wishing I'd find a Winchester or Marlin lever action on my hikes. But if I had a choice between the two to purchase it'd darn well be a Winchester 1873.I love cowboy action rifles(and handguns)and covet a 357-38
To hell with the gun, I'll come to see you Ashley. Whoever he is, your man is a lucky fella
I enjoyed this video by the way,and the woman was quite good at explaining.
Man, I wondered where I left it !!! Just stay there and I'll come by and pick it up !!!! My Dad is going to be mad that I let it get a little worn and rusty !!!
wow.
Hello from Pittsburgh. Very cool rifle. Does it have a 24” barrel?
Thanks Ashley. You’re the curator at BB Winchester museum, right?
Amazing find and a true piece of American history. The real question is, why do you have a table of upside down bear heads?
Step 1: lean rifle up against tree
Step 2: go to the bathroom a few paces away
Step 3: spend 2 days searching for rifle, ultimately giving up
I believe my uncle Willie P. Long put the rifle there you see uncle Willie P. Is fond of his Jack Daniels and some times he forgets where he puts things I hope you understand
Hey you found my grandpas daddies rifle - !!!!
I hope This will make its wayback to Carson City,NV where it belongs !
I just found what looks like an 1873, but all the wood is gone. Hammer is there, maybe some of the cocking part. some numbers. what led me here.
Is it for sale?
Head curator Ms. Ashley Hlebinsky of the Cody Firearms Museum - clearly not the kind off woman you'd go off half-cocked (when dealing with firearms).
There was a rifle in that?
try reading the serial number ..?
I think the owner of this rifle was murder for the one antique enemy or by wild mountain lion, wolf, bear...
I just like literally JUST clicked on this video/discovered this channel. 22 seconds in and i just have to say...she is breathtakingly cute...
So fine...
yes she is :)
This rifle, gun Henry-Winchester is good model but have a much work for restavration, restoration
lol it would be funny if it had the date on it and it was like 2007
That's not how it works
ontarioknivesNS7 it was a joke....
ha ha those bears are totally photo bombing her the whole time and she can't even tell
Haha whose idea do you think it was to put them back there? ;)
Isnt there a serial number or any stamped info on it? Seems like you could glean plenty from that.
Most likely rusted away.
This
she is beauti
Interesting, but I would have liked to see it fire, or at least get some impressions about what it was like to fire it.
that gun will probably never be shot. im sure the barrel is rusted on the inside so bad and im sure the action is rusted shut.
I think that one bear is a bit out of place... and that leather jacket you have on also! Bet that gun could be bored out and have a liner placed and new stocks and it would be good to go!
KSL us Utah news not national news but ya
loaded??? wtf...
Everyone's commenting about how cute this woman is and I agree, but who wears a leather jacket over a blouse and skirt? Were they unable to decide on the wardrobe for the video last minute?
the girl first then the gun
I only watched this video for the beautiful blonde.
Summer '15? It's October... :(
+Justins1877 The exhibit was de-installed today. However, we donated the exhibit in its entirety to the Great Basin National Park. The firearm will be displayed in perpetuity at the Park, starting in 2016 in honor the National Park Service Centennial. So make sure to check it out there!
That's great, hats off to you guys! Is there anywhere to view the final restoration of the rifle?
+Justins1877 We did not do a full restoration on the firearm. Rather we stabilized it so it would not decay further but left it in its original configuration. In the next day or so, I will be posted pictures of the exhibit and the de-install on our Facebook page: Cody Firearms Museum
OK, I like this, but if she says "firearm" one more time, I'm gonna scream.
ARMFIRE ... I screwed it up...
Maybe they were drunk and forgot it
Jeeezus...I wish I had a dollar for every time she says "firearm".
Yeah, she should have thrown in a load of other terms like gat, heater, shootin' iron, piece, blaster, rod, boom-stick, etc. I would have enjoyed that.
Ms Hlebinsky is good but she's not a patch on gun-Jesus...
C'mon guys! Pull your pants up! First of all she's not THAT gorgeous. Second, her eyes remind me of Cameron Diaz which , to me, means "airhead". Third her voice is kinda of raspy sounding and whoever wrote the script needs to retake their 10th grade English class. Repeating the same words and phrases throughout just makes you sound like an idiot and bores the listener.
But, Im sure she's a lovely person who deserves neither my criticism nor praise.
Just saying.
Lethgar Smith well his voice indeed sound hasky and his eyes are not so blue BUT STILL that look cary some heavy punch to my fragile brain. haha
