Since Mike Trout's debut in 2011, the Los Angeles Angels have made the playoffs only once, and have never won a playoff game. Not only do the Angels have one of the best players in baseball history in Mike Trout, but now they have a healthy Shohei Ohtani doing things we've never seen before in the history of the sport. The Angels have never given either of these two a decent shot at a deep postseason run. Matt needed nearly 30 minutes to break it all down, and show you how this truly is a one of a kind disservice to the fans of professional sports everywhere.

@@zacwoods Lmao Trout can't play every position. The Angels have bad coaching and the team relies on Trout too much that's why when he's out they win because it forces all the mediocre players to step up. Not Trouts fault. For non-hockey fans:
      - Connor McDavid is the Mike Trout of hockey: the best player of his generation, and on pace to retire as one of the best players ever. At 24 years old, McDavid just led the NHL in scoring for the 3rd time, and he is a heavy favorite to win his 2nd MVP award.
      - Leon Draisaitl is the reigning NHL MVP and (barring a career-ruining injury) a surefire Hall of Famer. Over the last 5 seasons, Draisaitl is 2nd (behind only McDavid) in total point-scoring.
      - This season, McDavid and Draisaitl lapped the field in terms of scoring. McDavid led the league with 105 points and Draisaitl was 2nd with 84. After those two, the next-highest scorer recorded only 69 points.
      - McDavid and Draisaitl have made the playoffs twice, winning a total of 7 games. It's not nearly as egregious as the Angels' lack of success, but (unlike Trout and Ohtani) McDavid and Draisaitl are almost the same age and have spent their entire careers together. This is the Angels' first season of healthy, prime-level Trout/Ohtani, but the Oilers have been squandering the McDavid/Draisaitl combo for years.

"Making the playoffs" was really "making the world series" back then, as only two teams made the postseason. It sounds worse when you say it the way you did, it was extremely hard to win the pennant in the old days, winning the division didn't guarantee you a spot in the postseason. Now a days a 90 win team can win the world series if they get hot in September/October. I just think its kind of harsh to put it the way you did, the Angels are far more disappointing because they cant even achieve a first round exit, something those Cubs teams could have at least done with the current playoff format back then. The Cubs did absolutely choke in 1969 though, ill give you that.

If I were managing the angels I would Invest HEAVILY in your player development and scouting. Secondly, the only players I would be handing big contracts to is their core. That being Trout, Ohtani, Rendon, and Adell depending on how he ends up. But they all seem to be under contract for a while so that step is already done. I’d throw a decent amount of money at a really good starting pitcher too. Obviously they need it. A few medium-ish sized deals for pitching depth and bullpen reinforcement.
Outside of the core + a couple good supporting pieces. I’d be going full Tampa Bay Rays mode. Get rid of all the bad contracts and play money ball with the rest of the roster. Get effective players for a bargain price. If some don’t work out… well, it’s still better than their old strategy of throwing big money at players who suck for them. Then you just rely on your investment in your farm system to pay off. Good pieces coming from there can supplement their core, and if any have some high trade value you can trade them off for additional good pieces.

Ohtani's journey to the majors was unconventional. Usually Japanese players play however many years over there before their free agency (similar to how team control works in the MLB) before being shopped abroad. Ohtani asked his Japanese team to allow him to go to the States earlier just cause he thought he could do well there and they allowed it. Thus, he would earn the league minimum in the MLB and start from scratch. Every team wanted him so they all threw him their pitch, and after he announced that he'd join the Angels he revealed why.
1 - He wanted to play in the American League so he could DH (obvious)
2 - He wanted to play on the West Coast to be closer to Japan (understandable)
3 - He didn't want to play on a team that already had a Japanese icon (meaning no Mariners (Ichiro) and arguably no Rangers (Darvish and that isn't really West Coast anyway))
So that leaves only the Angels and the A's....he would have been a perfect Athletic, absolutely perfect. It would have given the club the boost they needed to be true contenders and as he'd be under team control for however many years, an excellent Beane-esque signing....
I'm assuming he chose the Angels for the city of LA, that the Angels are more prestigious than the lowly (cough) A's, and idk if he really cares about winning as much as marketing his brand. Ichiro is Elvis in Japan. Every old person there knows about the Mariners. Think he wanted his 'team' to be more....presentable. But damn if only he wanted to win more, how awesome that would have been...

Ohtani isn't a material person like, ehm, you. His salary goes to his manager and all he did is practice without playing around so LA aren't good for him. Remember pitcher who drugs?
The only reason he goes to LA is Oakland wouldn't give him more money and his manager know it better. They understand Ohtani is good enough to play and then choose where to stay where he can spend all of the money.
And Athletics is pretty much antagonized especially during Ichiro Mariner era in Japan, so probably just go to LA since his senpai is in Rangers previously.

The current Edmonton Oilers of the NHL are probably the closest comparison you can make. Seeing as McDavid is on his way to being easily a top 5-10 player of all time and Draisitl has been top 5 in league scoring three straight years and won MVP in 2020. This year they got swept in the first round of the playoffs, missed last year, and lost in the first round the year before that and that’s with the NHL allowing 16 teams into the playoff every year. I genuinely understand the magnitude of what both of these guys have done but man 2 MVP’s on the team in the last three years and McDavid is gonna win it again this year I honestly can’t decide which team is more extreme in letting down a pair of hall of fame talents.

I really think if he stays healthy enough to continue pitching all year, and stays consistent with his hitting(which I only see him getting inconsistent if he gets injured and is out of the lineup for an extended period of time) that he has the best chance at winning AL MVP this year. He doesn’t need to have league best numbers in either hitting or pitching, just above league avg in both, stays healthy, and I think he gets MVP relatively easy??

You CANNOT carry a Major League Baseball team. So anyone who uses that argument against Trout (or Ohtani) is ridiculous. A baseball player can’t have the equivalent of a 50 point game in the NBA, they can’t hit the game winning shot unless it’s the bottom of the 9th and they have enough runners on base to take the lead. They can’t throw for 400 yards and 5 TD’s like a Quarterback can. All a player in the MLB can do is hit the ball when they’re up to bat, and catch it or make the throw/tag when the ball comes to them.

    • @king_supreme1102
      @king_supreme1102 3 роки тому +2

It is much easier for a pitcher to dominate in a single game. But even still, that’s not carrying a team. You can only pitch every 5th day, or if you’re a reliever a few innings every few games. And even then your team only wins if the offense gives you the proper run support.

As an Angels fan, I'm grateful that somebody FINALLY spoke up about this. This team has been nothing but the definition of insanity for the past several years. A lolcow in disguise. We're not Tigers-level bad because we have Trout and Ohtani, but we're in no shape to actually compete with the big boys because everyone else is either injury-prone, past their prime, or are just flat-out terrible at baseball.
Something needs to change and it starts with getting rid of Arte Moreno. The man has cared so little about our team's success, being far more concerned about the brand than the actual product. Oh yeah, we don't ACTUALLY play in LA, but think about the revenue that could bring in! And to have Trout and Ohtani, the two most talented players in baseball, in tow? Even more money! We don't need anything else!
The tricky (and tragic) part about all this is that Arte has been so good at slyly deflecting blame to other people on the Angels staff and avoiding the guillotine, a la Among Us. First it was Brad Ausmus who was to blame for the 2019 season, so he was fired. Then it was Billy Eppler who was to blame for the lousy acquisitions for the past few years, so he was fired. As long as this organization keeps finding scapegoats to keep Moreno on his throne, don't expect the Angels to be a relevant team anytime soon.

Agree w the 4th part of the video; the success of a team starts with player dev, although it doesn't stop there. Nowadays, statisticians(Sabermetricians) are the most invaluable piece of daily MLB play, those with the best algorithms have the advantage. Then you have coaching staff and trainers, who are the glue of the team. Then comes the players. Then comes luck. Putting together a winning baseball team is like a jigsaw puzzle of working pieces. You can't just expect the absolute perfect plan, with all the best players, coaches, front office, etc to make a WS. That's the beauty of baseball.
The Angels have made some serious efforts in player dev and putting together an official plan for this, hiring out the cardinals gm who put together "the Cardinals way" which led them to 3 WS in recent time, maybe about 5 years ago he put together "the Angels way" which is modeled after that specific team and minor league dev strategy. The Angels have also hired and fired GM after GM, and they have boosted their minor league system over the past 8 years as well. The ranking maybe has changed last 2 years, but they were 2nd to last when they signed Hamilton, then after the implementation of the strategy boosted top 15 in recent time. You mentioned all the big contracts, which are all business moves, because the Angels owner is a savvy businessman, but you don't mention any of the quality quality moves this team has made. None of this was mentioned in the video.
As a baseball fan in general, I totally disagree with the premise of this video. To say, Trout and Ohtani are being wasted, and the Angels team are to blame is a haste generalization of the game, which goes beyond the game.
This is the beauty of baseball, it doesn't matter if you have the best player on your team, 1 person cannot carry the team like other major sports.
Its also disrespectful of Mike Trout and Ohtani, the GOATs, to say that their careers and all their efforts and contributions to the game are diminished by not making the postseason. This is the logic which causes players to throw away their values and abandon their teams, which I feel more fans respect than if a guy has the luck of being put on a great team. This is a slap in the face to baseball, you can't just take all the best players off of contracts, and place them on the 6 division winning teams at the end of the year.
You could make this same argument with literally 24 of the 30 teams, so maybe this video should just be called, "Why Mike Trout should abandon his team to play on the top 6 teams of the year."
Or we could just appreciate greatness, and respect the incredible difficulty it takes for a franchise to make the postseason in baseball in comparison to other sports.

Well, Trout is smart. If he stays with the Angels his entire career, he will have a statue built there and will be known as the greatest player to ever put on an Angels uniform. His name will become synonymous with being an Angel. Similar to how Babe Ruth and Lou Gherig and Mickey Mantel are synonymous with the Yankees organization. Ken Griffey Jr. was a great player, but I always associate his name with the Mariners organization, even after he played with other teams. Sometimes players decline after leaving their home team.

As an Angels fan, this video hurts a lot. This is all on Arte Monero - the owner and his executive team.
Giving Mike Scioscia a 10 year deal - a manager who simply refused to adjust to the new era of moneyball and analytics from 2010 - 2018.
Low prioritization of scouting and player development in the past decade was devastating for the Angels. Red Sox and Dodgers hire the most scouts in the league with the best minor league facilities. No surprise it feels like they always have a young stud in the minors every year. Those franchises are always in the playoff hunt.
Arte Moreno’s refusal to hire a President of Baseball Operations. Seeing the Red Sox hire Chaim Bloom and the Giants hire Farhan Zaidi have paid so much dividends thus far in such little time for their respective franchises. Nothing against Jerry Dipoto, Billy Eppler, and Perry Minasian - Bloom and Zaidi are in a whole new level. Two genius baseball executives cut from the Andrew Friedman Tampa Bay Team. They’re absolutely wizards at finding hidden talent like Max Muncy, Chris Taylor, Randy Arozarena, etc. Along with managing their team like Ziadi is maximizing every ounce of the 2021 Giants team. Instead Monero always hires first time GMs and he always has a say in player trades and free agency. I know Minasian is new but the two big pitching acquisitions last offseason were Alex Cobb and Jose Quintana . That tells me Monero is penny pinching. Liam Hendricks, Brad Hand, Trevor Bauer, Trevor Rosenthal, Yusmiero Petit, Shane Green were all available.
I hope things change - it hurts not seeing Ohtani and Trout at least have a fighting chance in September let alone a playoff wild card in October.
Stay strong Angel fans 😇 thank you so much for the video.

One comparable I can think of off the top of my head is Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL. Both are top 3 in scoring over the last 3 seasons, but the team itself can't make it through the playoffs. They just got swept earlier this year. The Oilers have been great in the regular season recently, but can't win when it counts. Not so much mediocrity from the team, but inability to perform when it matters.
