The more likely explanation is that students were asked to submit pronunciations of their names. Example: stoo-art for Stewart. There was probably some error and she got given the list of pronunciations without the corresponding list of names. So she's basically reading gibberish.

Fun Fact: I watched the seniors from my college graduate yesterday, and two notable things happened:
1. Someone hit the griddy when their name was called
2. Someone had the last name shrek, and EVERY single person cheered when their name was called.

Difference is, diversity applies to everything, for example, they could have ask an asian , black, white, latino or ANY other race to be part of the event, now hiring someone who doesnt speak english, not even in a 4th grader level, thats not "diversity" that "stupidity" because that is one of the most important events in peoples lives, from going to school kids, to functional adults. It should be an important and well organized day for most, not a circus.

My senior year of high school we had an assembly about getting your transcripts sent to colleges and how to do it. My school decided to pick the only secretary with horrible English and the thickest Indian accent I’ve ever heard. We had to sit through a hour long assembly without understanding a word and the school had to email the PowerPoint to all the student for us to get the info. They also had the same lady do the presentation for the parents, so hundreds of parents took time out of their day after working to go sit in an assembly where they couldn’t understand a word because my school was too stupid to think “maybe we should get someone who speaks understandable English”
They actually hired a Zulu tribal woman to read off college graduate names this is insane. This person quite possibly has never seen latin letters before and has only spoke in clicks and tongues.
Xhosa is the clicking one. Zulu does use latin characters. Most african languages use Latin or Arabic characters. It's just an accent issue. Shouldn't be making fun of the person speaking. We should be making fun of the DEI people who put them in that position.

Whoever the heck this announcer is needs to work in customer service at a restaurant dawg. I spend a year and a half having to write down and pronounce the goofiest names on the face of the earth, and I learned how to pronounce foreign names. At this point it reminds me of the Key & Peele "A-aron" skit.
I also expected the apology to be "We hired a non-native english speaker" (even then I'd blame the university for putting that poor soul in that situation) but nope. I don't know how you screw that up.

For my highschool graduation we had to give the announcer a paper with how we want our names to be pronounced in Phonetic spelling form to avoid this. if my highschool could do it can’t be crazy for a uni to do it too💀

Makes me wonder if they had to do the same and just messed it up bad. But ig not if its everyone right? Just graduated with my BS yesterday (only took me six years 🙄) and we did have to spell out our names with pronunciation. We also had our name normally written out and it was read by AI. Muucchhhhh more effective than what TJU did. I would much rather have that than what they had, as ours was fast and efficient, and our graduation of hundreds of students only lasted two hours (and the speakers left their speeches to three minutes or less which was AMAZING).

This is how they call people down to the principals office, if it’s not like James, George, or something common like that then they couldn’t pronounce your name properly if their life depended on it.
This is so incredible because so many people from working class backgrounds and particularly immigrant backgrounds truly put so much stock into the graduation before even the part where you get an actual job so this is such an important milestone in life that was completely ruined by someone.

Had my graduation on Friday, so glad this didn't happen to me. It was my first time ever having a graduation since I dropped out of High School and went to College instead after a bit. Of course that required me getting a GED, but still, very glad I didn't have this happen to me.

When I graduated university last year, we were told to write our names on a sheet of paper and in brackets how you would pronounce it. So something like if my name was Calypso Núñez, I'd put in brackets "Cal-ip-so Noon-yez"
