  • I've refinished some pretty derelict pieces in the last few years, but what about the ones that aren't "terrible", but still need some attention. This cedar chest needed a partial refinish, and a partial finish rework. And if you have a Lane cedar chest, you're going to want to know about these locking mechanisms.

For anyone watching this video... this is a restoration! A restoration is not changing the use of the piece, it is not painting the piece to cover up damage. A restoration is returning the piece to its original functionality, to its original appearance, as much as possible. Absolutely wonderful work done here! Beautiful and high quality crafts!

When I was about 10 years old, my uncle bought this style Lane chest for my aunt. She kept all her afghans and throws that she made in it. This is a lovely refurbish, Angie. Brings back a lot of good memories.🌸

As always, love your video and music choices! Thank you for sharing your gifts!
Now, I'll share my story as it pertains to Lane cedar chests. My mother left her Lane cedar chest to me when she passed in 1999. My dad gave it to her for Christmas in 1948, a few months before they were married. It has always been very special to me as I am very sentimental. The original Christmas card to my mom from my dad is still in it tacked to the inside lid -- right where she put it 76 years ago! 😢❤

OMG……When I was in high school ( early 60’s ) we were taken to a fancy furniture store by our home economics teacher. One of the items we were introduced to as “prospective future wives” were the Lane Hope Chests. Each of us was gifted with small letter sized cedar chest as a memory. Haven’t thought of that in ages. Thank you for the video and the lovely reminder of my youth!❤❤❤

Now you just need one of those tiny Lane cedar hope chests that local furniture stores used to gift all the girls during their senior high school year to sell them hope chests for their upcoming weddings (eek!). I have my mother's on my desk from 1949, holding my pens. They're perfect little replicas, even lined with cedar.

I have my grandma's Lane chest from 1940 that my grandpa gave her. It still has the Lane brand paper tag on the inside in perfect condition, and my grandpa wrote on the tag "To Bea. Love, Vic. Xmas 1940." The inside is in perfect condition (my grandmother used it to hold her costume jewelry (she had an extensive collection, was so fun to go through after she passed) and the inside is in perfect condition. The outside is in really good condition with some scratches, which aligns w being an 80+ yr piece of furniture. I want to sand the outside and refinish very naturally, but I just haven't picked a place in my home yet to display it. It's such a beauty. And yes, it still has its original unsafe lock, but there's no children in my home. Whoever ends up w it in hopefully 50+ years when my time is up can remove the upper latch if needed. I like that my cats can't get in to sleep on my blankets w the latch. 😂 Unsafe for kids, perfect to keep cats out.

It's beautiful. Thank you for this.
I wish I could send you my mother's cedar chest to work on. She got it, I think, in the late 1930s or early 1940s and it traveled all over the world with us (my dad was in the military). It's solid but really beat up and scratched from many a move.
Your approach to this project was appropriate and the result was very fine. As you implied, just because you can do something doesn't always mean you should.

You've done it again. I didn't think a piece in fairly decent condition could end up with such a difference. It looks virtually brand new! That cedar interior looks as if the logs were cut yesterday! I remember the Lane chests. I'd always wanted one. I ended up settling for redoing the old hinged faux-leather bench-seat chest that my Electrolux vacuum cleaner used to be stored in. It'll never look as good as your Lane piece, though I'd never say that within ear-shot of it. :D

Angie, your work never fails to astonish me. Not only are you a Master (Mistress 🤭) of your craft, but you have such a historical & working knowledge of the piece you're working with. The classic Lane chest not only got a "glow up," but in my opinion, the color is richer, and multidimensional; the layers of color correction, toner application, etc. is just 😘 This chest would not only function as storage, but can also see it, as it's low profile, would function beautifully as a coffee table, sofa console, bench, etc. It's really a shining piece. Keep sharing your gift with your audience...hope you and your Wife are enjoying Valentine's. Stay warm in Canada, we had a few inches of 🌨️❄️ here in NYC 🗽 this week 😁✌️

I’m so glad you did this video. Your end result looks really great and shows refreshing is sometimes a better result than an all out refinish. We just got my husband’s parents’ cedar chest. It’s a Lane and it has all of the paperwork still inside. It’s done with veneers on the top and sides it the back is the cedar planks. He wants me to try and remove the veneer so that it’s all cedar. I admit the style is true mid century but after seeing your process, I may try to talk him into letting me just sand and restrain it with a shade that’ll blend with our existing furniture.
I had looked all over UA-cam for how-tos with nothing that sparked an idea. Count on the Master Refinisher Angie to inspire me. Thank you again and I love your channel.

You have ruined most other furniture restoration channels for me. Perhaps if I hadn't found your channel first and learned the why's and how's of refurbishing or if I didn't see your sadness and frustration with bad repairs, then I could have worked my way up to your standard of proferssional quality. But your work is SO GOOD!I can't watch them stain over missing veneer or screw through an unstable leg. You teach as you create and it's wonderful to watch. Im so excited each time a new video is posted. Please recommend channels of those you respect.

its beautiful, I inherited my Mom's Lane hope chest its in blond with a curved top from the 50's. it has the coolest lid that can open even when the chest is push close to the wall. It also has a hinged shelf, I love it and I did not know you could refresh the cedar I am definitely going to research that!

What a lovely piece! Women used to get a chest before marriage, a hope chest, and they were often Lane chests. Also, I remember daytime game shows in the 60s that used Lane Cedar Chests as prizes. Nice work as always.

I am so excited for this video. I see Cedar chest for sale all the time on Facebook marketplace where I live. I guess people just don’t care for them anymore. I think they’re lovely. Selling price is usually about two or $300. what the original owners want. But they will stay up for sale for a long time before they are bought.and it just seems like more of a good beginners piece for refinishing so this might make me actually take the leap and try to do one myself

That turned out absolutely beautiful! I love what you did with this chest. I've always loved cedar chests, I love the smell of them, and the wood is always so beautiful with the red and white tones. Thank you for giving it some new life!
I'm also glad you refurbished a cedar chest, because it gave me a chance to see what you did with it. May I pick your brain for a bit? I have a cedar chest in my home, it's been in my family for 4 generations now. I think it was made in the mid to late 1800's, but I'm not sure. I do know that it isn't pressed wood, it's all cedar, and it needs some love and attention, but I'm hesitant to work on it, because I don't know what I'm doing.
It's lost its scent, it has some kind of shellac on the outside that's yellowed over time, and it has some fancy trim around the front. If I refinish it myself, I will have to do it on my back patio, I'm afraid I don't have anywhere to set up a workshop. I'd like to get rid of the shellac completely and let the beauty of the wood stand on its own. It's actually still in good condition, it is a little scratched up, but nothing is coming apart, it just needs a bit of a refresh.
What I want to know is what products are safe to use on it? I don't want to stain it or anything, I want to keep it to the natural wood. I know that you usually use Odie's Oil on wood pieces, but I noticed you didn't this time around. Is there a reason for that? Is there something else that would be better than Odie's Oil for cedar? I'm hoping to refresh this piece this spring or summer, so I could use all the advice I can get.

      @TranscendFurnitureGallery  4 місяці тому +1

I wouldn’t use Odie’s on the interior of cedar, (as it would actually seal the wood fully), but I’d use on the exterior if it was solid cedar. The hemp oil I used doesn’t seal off the cedar smell; it just kind of nourishes the wood, but as long as it’s wiped out thoroughly after, won’t ruin fabrics. I much prefer Odie’s on the exterior of solid cedar chests vs shellac for sure.

You did a great job on this cedar chest! I have my mothers Lane cedar chest from 1949! The lid lifts and theres a tray attached to it. I wish I had known about replacing the lock before they went out of business. I have no children so theres no immediate danger of kids getting stuck inside, but I guess I will try to find a different lock that fits. If I cant find one, then removing the top portion would be my only option. Its strange, it never crossed my mind, as a kid, to climb inside it. My mom always kept it fully packed.

Love the size and look of this Lane chest. I can imagine a bunch of cozy and warm blankets being stored in it. I like the look of the blonde cedar streaks on the underside of the lid. I think it gives the piece character. Why anyone would try to cover up that lovely cedar smell is beyond me. Like you said, it defeats the purpose. I can almost hear the wood sigh with relief when you poured the hemp oil! Thanks to you, this chest can now live on in service for another 58 years (and longer!!!). Too bad about the locks, but I liked your clever solution. Now the chest is kiddo, and pet friendly. :) Thanks for another great video!

I am glad to see another person bringing things back to life. My Father built furniture for Berea College , Kentucky He always signed and dated his personal items. I have been doing the same. I would like to see you sign and date your work somewhere hidden (back, bottom of drawer, bottom of cabinet, etc.) Doesn't mean much now. But years down the line someone will own one of your restorations and be glad to see your name. I just received one of my Fathers desk he built for my brother. on the back was his name "LLoyd Kerby made 1939 for Clifford Kerby".

According to some of the other commenters, there used to be a practise where they gave the girls mini Lane chests to get them to buy the larger ones. Quite a few commenters have said they still have theirs, or their aunts, grandmothers etc. Before my time. 😊

Really nice! Tempted to do something similar to resuscitate my Lane chest. I can't remove the latch however, because it doesn't close tightly enough without it to keep the mice out at my cottage. No kids around though luckily!

Your furniture transformations are always a surprise. I saw this video and noticed this stamp with Hanover embossed on it. At first I thought, "Oh, the chest comes from Germany (Hannover)". I live near Hannover (Germany). But in Canada (Ontario) there is a Hanover that is only spelled with an "n". Learned something new again. I love your videos and your craftsmanship. Thank you for letting me take part in it.❤❤❤

My former in-laws gave me a beautiful dark oak Lane cedar chest for Christmas on 1976. The wood seems very soft, it scratches and mars very easily and one leg has been broken, possibly a hardware problem. I’d love to have it repaired with a much more durable finish and the leg repaired properly.
