Correcting Artist, Album and Song Info In the Mac Music App

- macmost.com/e-2104 If you have songs in the Music app that are missing information then the app may not group them by artist or album correctly. You can correct this information easily in the app. You can also modify songs so they appear on the proper albums and sorted in the right order. You can add album artwork too, and set the order of tracks in an album. This works the same way before Catalina in the iTunes app and will even work for songs obtained from Apple Music and sync with your other devices.

Cheers, I watched about 3 other shorter videos that were similar to yours, but only yours was in-depth enough to allow me to correct multiple tracks together as an album, rather than a compilation.
I remember doing this about 15 years ago with my ancient iPod putting my MP3s on it. I hated having dozens and dozens of genres so I made everything fit into just a handful. Good to know this applies to Apple Music nowadays. I haven’t hooked an iPhone to a computer in a long time lol. Here we go!
Thanks, Gary! I've now got all of the music I want on my MacBook, my iPhone, and my iPad, all with the correct tags. All except one track which is determined to be difficult. It's in the correct album on my iPad and iPhone but thinks it's in its own album on the Mac. All of the tags are the same for all tracks except for the artist, title, and track number, and they're all checked as part of a compilation. I guess I'll have to live with this as it's the only one. Anyway, yet another great video from you!

This was helpful. But some songs were too stubborn to take the matching Artist and Album Name. So I just deleted those entries in Get Info, and then retyped them (or use the auto suggest to match the data). This merged the song correctly into the proper album.

Explained very well, I’m importing ALL of the cd’s I have at home, this is as helpful in helping me put them in order of album, etc, but I have a question, what does it actually mean when they ask, “do you want to replace existing songs?”
And what does that do to the downloading the cd, with either a yes or no reply.
I'm not familiar with that message. But I haven't ripped a CD in probably a decade. I assume it means exactly what it says.
Thank you for your help. A little late to itunes and ipod...but I love my fourth gen ipod classic. I bought one of the last ipod touch, but am not happy with the sound quality. I have two ipod Classic's, and the sound is amazing. Don't know why the new one sound so cheap...and I spent $300 on it.
Apple Music with Big Sur seems to no longer allow you to add music that you downloaded elsewhere. Also, I noticed I don't seem to be able to change any of the metatag info or add custom artwork to music files. Any ideas?

I finally bit the bullet and updated my OS to Monterey, forcing me into the Music app. I am a hardcore music nerd (love Sleater Kinney) and have meticulously labored over my iTunes library for 20 years. Now I have gaps between songs which should not have gaps...many ambient albums, Pink Floyd, concerts, etc. I've tried everything to solve this to no avail. Have you had any reports of this? My library, mostly ripped from CDs and vinyl, resides on an external 4TB SSD.
You can also type directly into the Title, Artist and Album fields in the Playlist mode without having to open the Info window.

It will sort on the computer. The problem is when I sync my iPod classic every featured artist gets their own list under Artist. So I have to keep them as compilations which sucks sometimes.

Hi Gary, thanks for the video. I use Music app and all my music is stored in an external drive. The music library doesn't store the tracks on my macbooks drive, in order to save space. Now that i want to replace my external drive with a new one, i will copy / paste the old external to the new one, which i will give the same name as the old. Will the music library be ok, or do i have to fix it again? Albums, song titles, artwork etc?
I can't say for certain. It will probably be OK. But you'll find out either way.

I've come across an issue on my Macbook running Monterrey whereby I can't modify multiple songs info at the same time. When i do what was shown in this video nothing happens when I click OK. Has anyone else come across this? I've been researching it for a couple of weeks with no resolution to e found.

i have a question. I have a lots of featuring in my library and i want to separe the song in the different artist. Don't the album, the song. Can i see the song in different artist but have the same album?
For example: You have inside the macmost album a featuring between macmost and clevermedia. Imagins if the whole album would be a featuring. Is it posiible have the two artist at diferent artis, but in the album artist and the artis will be the both name? something like:
Album: Macmost album
Album Artit: Macmost & Clevermedia
Artist: Macmost & Clevermedia
And then, on the artist view, you can see both artist separated with the same songs and the same album.
I mean tht if it's possible tags a few artits in a same song and haven't an artist of called Macmost & Clevermedia.

after creating an album, when drag and dropping the file onto the desktop the artwork disappears from the sound file. Why is that? anyone?
I am unable to change genre for multiple songs. I am able to modify one at a time but it reverts to the original. I've had Mac for donkey's and cannot even modify my own entries from years past
Some songs I have when I add to playlists they say it will delete playlist and remove from cloud, whereas some songs are fine.

can you make a video on what to do when an album splits? i’m downloaded an album off dropbox and when i drag it into itunes it comes as two albums, the first being the first track and the second beings the rest of the songs.

My problem seems simple, but it's an ongoing issue, and I just can't seem to fix it. I have a Dell (Windows latest) and when I go in an album to fix the spelling (iTunes' fault, of course), the albums split in two. For example, if the album has, say, three tracks, one track will split from the original album, and the other two will remain. I fixed/synced all the info in BOTH albums, yet the song refuses to return to the original album. I would really appreciate your help regarding this matter. 🤦🏽♀️

Hi Gary, great videos! Quesiton. if you add or change (meta)data on the itunes app, will it also change it in the parent folder? So let's say i make no copies of my music but import them to the itunes. I twill play through the folder i have imported it from. And if i add for example artwork. Will it be added to the actual file. or only in a itunes playlist script? because im looking for a way to add re-write fileds that can be also used in itunes. For example. which songs to for exmple export to a dj software, but still be able to play it from that specific playlist in itunes
This is part of your library, not the media files.
Hi Gary, I've been going through my Music files so that I can sort everything in a way that suits me during which time this video popped up and provided the usual great content that has helped greatly.
I'm having a problem with a song purchased on iTunes where I cannot remove "Various Artists" or the Album name and these prevent me from having a succesful outcome. I could delete the Sort As in Sorting but could not on the information page. When I went back to sorting the "Various Artists" was back again.

Not sure. Keep playing around with it and see what you can do. I use Apple Music so it would be different for me.

I think it is all really just stored in the Music library as metadata. But experiment and see.
Being an Apple Music user from a long time -in the mac 13.1 version , i am having a hard time understanding why on the album view and on the song view , i am getting getting different results --some (all songs complete ) are on the album and when i switch to the song view by artist or album , i am missing one or more tracks--Just like if there was two different libraries. . And this is happening on many many albums --what am i doing wrong or what is happening….Close to 4K (3962. Albums) different complete albums all recorded from cd’s mostly lossless . I love this much control for Music - I'm still on Mojave as I'm concerned that Big Sur won't give me as much control as I have now. For example, I have over 50 Smart Playlist. I use the the "Sort Show" filed to apply keywords (like Gym or Food) to create custom playlists. Will this all still work in Big Sur? I also control what goes onto a 128G iPod Classic and my iPhone 12 (I have over 48K tracks and don't want ALL on each device.).
Sort Show is still there. It is the same. You should be able to sync your devices as before. Eventually you need to update -- you can't stay at Mojave forever.
I just downloaded an album onto my Mac but it doesn't show up in the list of albums in music folder. What can I do about that?

Exactly.. you can't do it. All this info stays only in music app and not on actual music files. So if you send them on another computer you will have to do everything from the start

Hi, when I upload music from iTunes to iPhone, there is a couple of albums that are by just the one artist that show up in the compilation section on my iPhone. They don't show. up as compilation albums in my iTunes on my Mac but they do on my iPhone...for someone with OCD it's extremely annoying. Every other album on my iTunes is correct and under the correct artists without ever being in the compilation section. The box is unticked before you say that. I've made sure everything is the same so no random album track numbers or different album images etc but I cannot seem to figure out why? Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you!
Impossible for me to know why. Experiment. Try changing things. Keep working at it if you want to make them appear differently. That's all you can do.
What do you think about using Mac as a main music source with good quality computer speakers compared to hifi ( connivence over hifi quality)
I'm not an expert but it would be the speakers that matter more than the source device. At least with modern Macs which output high quality audio.

Would you happen to know how to fix the artwork on an iPhone that’s wrong but it’s right on iTunes in the computer. Even if you check it on the computer while connected to iTunes it shows the right artwork but on the actual phone it’s wrong.

couple of questions on my old Mac I had to add artwork to each individual track separately to get the picture to show up on my MP3 player, I have a new Mac and even though I have got iTunes installed I tunes will not import cds just comes up with error 50 every time, I have managed to get Apple Music to import cd's will the same thing apply if I group add artwork will it not show on my MP3 player plus is it possible on music to get it to store to a folder on my desktop that's just music and doesn't include the music folder and automatically add to music folders, its not the end of the world but with iTunes I managed to get it set up so I could go into the folder and would just be the music without the extra stuff I don't need and not having to go through the 2 folders to get to the music, Like I said both are not the end of the world stuff but seems like just a bit more complicated then it needs to be.
I don't know. If that is an idiosyncrasy of your MP3 player, then I guess it will be the same. But you didn't have to add them one at a time in iTunes (or now in Music). Just select all of the tracks from that album and do it at one time.
How do I reset everything back to default though?

Drag and drop an image onto of the icon in the Song Info window.
And one more question. Can I add my own mp3 file to the "Podcasts" app on my iPhone/iPad? In my iTunes program, I see different categories on the left (in "On my device" section) like "Music", "Films", "TV Shows", "Books", "Audiobooks" "Sounds". But there is no "Podcasts", and I can't understand it, why it's missing there.
No. The Podcasts app works with actual podcasts (Online RSS feeds of episodic content). You can add mp3 files to Music if you like and they would be treated as songs. Or just play the mp3 files without bringing them into Music or Podcasts -- you can do it in QuickTime Player for instance, or a third-party app. You don't need to have them in some sort of app library to just listen to them.
@@macmost Thank you for answers. The main thing that I need is to get an mp3 file in iPhone or iPad (and that is audio content, which is missing in iTunes/Podcasts), so that later I can listen to my own mp3 file offline in the "Podcasts" app, also because I can listen to it at a higher speed, skip forward/backward for a few seconds - these convenient features are missing in the usual "Music" application (because it is for Music, not for Podcasts). Better yet, be able to save it to Apple Watch as well. And you know, I managed to add my mp3 file to the "Podcasts" app on iPhone using iTunes program on my PC. Just look at this screenshot:

I'd assume you'd need a third-party app for that.

When I select all of the tracks to add the artwork, after implementing the artwork, It only added the picture to two of the songs but the rest were empty without a picture. Also, when i select on the songs individually to add the artwork, the "add artwork" selection is faded and a I can't click on it to add anything! Any suggestions?

No, this is only available in the Music app on the Mac.

I’ve run into an issue where my iPhone isn’t properly syncing up with everything I did on my Mac. The albums are perfectly done just how you did it here in the video. Everything is in place how I want it on the Mac but on my iPhone a lot of tracks are separated making duplicate albums or the albums have different titles but same art cover, and so on and so forth. Is there a fix for that by chance?
You'll need to call Apple Support and walk through it with them.
@@macmost I managed to figure it out. It requires turning off the sync library on my iphone and then connecting my phone to my iMac and then dragging and dropping the albums to my phone. I figured I would share that just in case anybody else runs into that same problem. Thanks for the video!
Once you have the music library the way you want it, how do you save it so when you do a clean install and import your songs it will stay this way?
Save your iTunes folder (in Music) onto a external drive, do a clean install and then replace the iTunes folder (in Music) with yours

Yes. Just go to the Playlist and click on the artwork.

@@macmost Down the left hand panel of Music, under Playlists, there are folders. I want art work to show instead of the folders. I want the same on the iphone.
@@jimmymac1958 I'm pretty sure you can't replace that. But you can use an emoji character in the name of the playlist.

You mean have the new Apple Music Sing feature use your own custom lyrics? No. But you could always make your own video in iMovie or something and have any titles you want on the screen.
@@macmost No. :(. See certain artists have songs that for whatever reason they are not available on apple music to download. I download their songs on youtube and convert them to MP3 files and add the lyrics. But I can't ever get the lyrics to appear when they are supposed to.

What about the Artist photo? I have many imported CD's when sorted by Artist only shows a microphone.
I don't think there is any "artist photo" you can set. For in cases where Apple Music has an artist photo, I see that. But in other cases I see one album photo selected to represent the artist. Maybe try setting the album art to get an artist image -- not sure if it is the latest album, or first, or max number of songs. Experiment.

You can recover deleted files using your Time Machine backup. But without a backup, there's no way.

You need to do it through iTunes. That’s the only way. Your phone needs to be connected to iTunes to do that.
I only want to use Apple Music for my CD collection but I cannot get any lyrics. Is this because I have not purchased the songs from Apple? It regrettably appears to be yet another apple restriction.
Not really a restriction. Lyrics are a feature you get when you pay for Apple Music. If you don't want to pay for Apple Music, it isn't a "restriction" that you don't get what you aren't paying for. Know what I mean?

Do you mean in the iTunes Store or Apple Music? That's not "your" data -- that is a star because it is a popular song.
My information window under name has run out of room. Why?
Hi, on mac when I import audio files to traktor pro 3 they show up with the ‘Title’ name from ‘Get Info’ instead of the file rename I choose. Ive tried to near everything to resolve this issue and I’m not sure on how to fix it.
You'd have to contact support for that app and ask them.

Does anyone else find the UI of the app that doesn’t fit in the Mac styled apps ? I mean those big buttons doesn’t comply with the original system Mac buttons. Do you think we will see a redesign ?
The Music app is brand new for Catalina, but it looks a lot like iTunes. As a media app it is going to look different than the creative apps or business apps.

@@stergiosbampakis That's subjective, as is all design, really. I don't much care if a design is Mac-like or iOS-like or whatever. I care if it is useful or intuitive or consistent or, in some cases, attractive. You can debate design all day long, but in the end it is using it that matters.
Hi. I have a slightly different problem. The album (which I originallly downloaded from bandcamp) is all fine on my Mac's Music app. But when I synch to my iPhone, the album is in my phone's Music app but the tracks are in the wrong order. Any idea how how fix it? There doesn't seem to be a way to edit the info on the phone
If the song numbering is correct, then it should be the same in both places.

@@macmost On the Mac it is recognised as an album, but on the iPhone it has put each track as a separate album!
EDIT: I tried just deleting the songs off the iPhone then resynching. It worked :)
This is very good for Itunes, but since that is being scrapped now, this does not help for Apple Music App. The top bar is not visible on Apple Music, so how do one select song or info?
Not sure what you mean. Do you mean you can't see the menu bar for the Music App? Maybe you have the app in Full Screen mode, in which case you can just move your pointer to the top of the screen to see the Menu Bar or exit Full Screen with FN+f.
@@macmost If one import songs into Itunes it is very easy to change the song's information by licking right and select song info. This way one can change the name of the song, playlist etc. In Apple Music no one can tell me how to change the songs name. It don't allow me to download Itunes anylonger, so I have to use Apple Music. I see the songs - say it is called Track 16 and I want to put the proper name of the song, how do I do it? I see 3 dots on the left of the song which gives me delete from library, add to playlist, play next, play last, go to album, favourite and suggest less. I see three lines in the top right corner which gives me all songs, favourite, title, recently added and artist. Above the left hand side panel I see Edit and that is it. The edit tab let one add or delete what is display in the left side panel. I see no where, like in Itunes, a place in Apple Music to change the information of a song in one's library. In fact, this app is not user friendly at all.

Nobody can tell me how to change a song's title, or artist's name in Apple music, without doing this first in iTunes. It was easy to do this in iTunes. Just look carefully at the song info and set it all correctly with the right artist, album, etc.
Have to say Apple Music sucks for finding the correct artwork when ripping CDs via Apple SuperDrive and sometimes doesn’t even come up with any. Really gone downhill big time since the days of the iPod. Gets the genres wrong frequently too.

Each song has artwork. There's no artwork for album or artist. It is just taken from the songs.
I quit Apple music years ago because of this. Apple destroyed all information in my local file and put THEIR information . I have a huge collection of music in my external drive that I personally classify genres and style of music. When I subscribe to Apple music it crashes my information. It happens twice. @@nero-one Not sure what you mean. This is about changing the song info in your Music App Library (iTunes is long gone). You need to use the Music app to change what you see in the Music app. Not sure why you would want to change what you see in the Music app without using the Music app.
Anyone know how to fix this issue?
Lets say I have 5 Beatles songs - Ex. Abby Road, Come Together, Rubber Soul, Help and Hey Jude.
When I import them from MP3 files from a digital album I downloaded I have to manually fix the artist and song name on iTunes, no big deal. The REAL issue is that when I upload album artwork for one of the songs, all or most of the songs with the same artist name keep that same artwork.
Manually changing doesn't fix it, as it reverts back in less than 10 seconds. Manually adding artwork then sliding over and deleting old artwork yields the same 10 second fix. Manually deleting artwork for the song does work, but when you add the correct artwork it will STILL default to artwork that is on a completely different song.
Is there any fix to this at all? It's so annoying having 20 Rolling Stones songs or 30 AD/DC songs that ALL have the exact same picture.
Note - Yes iTunes is updated, yes iPhone is linked over WiFi but Ive shut it down to test this, so it has to do with iTunes on the PC, and yes, I have browsed all of the forums and found people having similar issues but naturally there is no listed solution.
Are you setting the Album name with each of these songs? I think the artwork would come from that.

How about a video on how to sync a new CD (or two) that you’ve ripped onto a hard drive onto your iPhone without having to sync the entire library again? Thanks
See ua-cam.com/video/sm7r0pwP8Cw/v-deo.html but note that "having to sync the entire library again" isn't an issue. If you have 99 albums on your device, and you re-sync with the same 99 albums and 1 new one, it doesn't copy everything. It just compares the two, figures out all it needs to do is add 1 album for it to be "in sync" and then it is done.
Hey Gary , do you know how i can delete songs from my ipod ? I am using Apple music and iMazing but neither will allow me to delete individual songs from my ipod. I havent done it in awhile and i really miss Itunes.
If you are syncing your iPod with your Mac, you would use the Music app to control that as you did iTunes before.
@@macmost I am using it but it won’t allow me to remove any songs. It’s weird. And iMazing will only allow me to move songs from the iPod to Apple Music or to a folder. Either way the song still can’t be removed from the iPod
@@Sjrick I can't tell what you have going on, but back in the days before Apple Music you would Sync your iPod to your Mac. So you didn't add or remove songs, you simply selected what you want to sync, and then re-sync. So if you say chose 10 playlists to sync, or 15 albums, or whatever, you would instead choose 9 playlists or 14 albums and then re-sync. See support.apple.com/en-ae/guide/mac-help/mchlbf6a1fab/mac
@@macmost Well my situation could not be any simpler. I have an old ipod that i want to add and subtract music from. I plug it in, My mac mini sees it and then i begin. In order for me to add any music, i have to wipe out everything already on the ipod. And i dont want to do that obviously. So currently i am looking for alternatives to apple music. iMazing hasnt been very good either. So i am still looking. You are the ONLY Mac expert i know of on UA-cam that actually answers people. So i thought i would give it a shot. Its ok if you cant, I just thought i would ask.

Why for some Artists there is no picture? In your case there is Juliana Hatfield without picture in your Artists list. I have the same situation on my iPhone, where one famous musical group doesn't have picture. And what's interesting: this group has picture on my iPad, but it's missing picture on iPhone in "Music" app. As far as I understand, users can't add their own images for Artists. So it doesn't look very good.
Very hard to say why. Could just need time to load it. Or, it could be that it hasn't matched to anything in Apple's list of album artwork.
How do you put details for an album ? Ex. How it was made who made it , and the process it took to make it … Can you please make a video on this or respond how ?
