Custom Wood Burned Memorial Day Sign with Ikonart & Torch Paste

Check out this distressed wood burned sign that our intern Claire made. She used the Ikonart Custom Stencil Kit and our free SVG design to make the stencil, then used Torch Paste to wood burn the design, and Unicorn SP!T to add a little touch of color. She used a new technique where she wiped down her wood burned design with water to give it a more distressed look and add color variation to the final design. I got some questions. when i use the torch paste it bubbles when I use my 1800 W heat gun. What am I doing wrong? Also when I am done burning the design and I wipe the board with a cloth it smears black all over the entire board. Again what did I do wrong and how to prevent these things happening?

Could be the type of wood you are trying to burn on, but it also sounds like you’re leaving too much behind. You want to scrape off as much as possible before removing your stencil and only wood burn a thin layer, not a thick layer. That will also help with the ash rubbing all over the place after wood burning. But you can use a lightly damp cloth to wipe that away as well.
