    Ethan is right in my experience. If the ghost isn't from long term smoking of a blend, I've found that 3-5 bowls of a Burley or DFK blend can chase it away. Also, for those that may want an excuse for more pipes - you can have a dedicated briar to each flavor type of aromatic you might smoke. For example, I have a dedicated pipe for cherry type blends, another Pipe for maple type blends, and another for vanilla/cocoa/hazelnut/coffee type blends. I also have a couple pipes I only smoke latakia blends in. The rest get everything else, mainly Burley!

    Thanks for this. I’m new to pipes. I smoked 2 different vanilla aromatics in my pipe then tried a Virginia blend. Couldn’t even taste it. All I could taste and smell was the aromatics….

    I once received an estate pipe that, I don't know what was put in it, but it was this heavy rum and almond and sour something else in it. Took it to a pipe shop and they told me to use kosher salt and drinking alcohol to clean it out.
    On a positive note, smoking white knight out of a pipe I used for Eileen's dream ended up tasting like a mars bar for about 5-6 smokes, so it's also fun to experiment with ghosting too...make sure to do that in a pipe you don't care too much about like a cob though

    Greetings Wilson, some great advice, especially for new pipe smokers. I've not reamed a pipe that's been ghosted (estate pipes), Everclear and rocksalt have been my go to's.
    It's tough when you're just starting out, trying different aros and having a limited number of pipes to use. Corn cobs are invaluable for experimenting with aros. I use them and meers for the occasional aro or Lakeland blend.
    Serene smokes,
    Gary

      I've never used Everclear but I should pick some up for next time. Thank you for the added wisdom my friend!

    One last, last comment get some bristle cleaners to clean the tennon / airway and pipe stem. Dip the pipe cleaner in 70 per cent isopropyl and scrub until the pipe cleaner comes out clean. Take care to not get the alcohol on the pipe bowl finish as it may damage it. Bristle cleaners remove built up tar. You can also leave an alcohol soaked pipe cleaner in the draft hole/tennon to soften the oil and tar deposits. Not a nice process, but sometimes required.

    Here is the beauty of the Falcon pipe! Just keep a bowl or two specially for the aromatics job done😂 maybe I should heed my own advice 😂😂 As what one would call an occasional smoker (just weekends really) and having been a smoker for just about a month, none of my pipes have built up much of a cake, I’m still trying to find a “go to” tobacco. Loving Peterson EMP, G&H KBC and G&H Black Forest, time will tell I’m sure! As always Wilson thank you for all your hard work very much appreciated, kind regards from across the pond.

    I appreciate this video. If I end up ghosting a pipe with a blend I enjoy I dedicate said pipe to the blend. I marry the two for cross over English blends like eastfarthing. All others I keep to blend types that are very similar

    I have always found the ghosting problem is a bit overblown. I've only ever had a problem like one time, and it was a dog of a Latakia bomb (which I don't tend to prefer). And even then, it was just a few smokes after I changed it up that it was a bit of a issue. Maybe I just don't have that sophisticated of a palette. :)

    Hate to hear this. I too ghosted my first "good" pipe with that old cherry Cavendish you used to get at the pharmacy. I finally got it out with some pipe cleaner/sweetener. Took several weeks :(

    Thanks for the video. I'm sorry to hear that you had this ghosting experience with Presbyterian Reformation. I found it to be an amazing blend. I tend to favor Aromatics so I didn't have this issue fortunately. Good tips. Thank you.

    In the case of an old pipe, say, 50 yo that was smoked exclusively with aromatics, how likely is that flavor to ghost upon lighting? I recently discovered my first pipe having returned to pipe smoking after a long hiatus and thought about giving it a go.

  • @briandawkins984
    @briandawkins984 2 роки тому +1

    Well yes there is alcohol and kosher salt. I’ve also used dry coffee grounds- leave them in the bowl for a few days. Coffee is a very effective deodorizer. Also if the pipe is caked ream it. Finally for aromatics use corncobs, or a meerschaum or meerschaum lined pipe. I also have used alcohol based Listerine (mint) as a cleaner-extreme this one.

    • @TheSpurgeonPiper
      @TheSpurgeonPiper  2 роки тому +1

      Love the idea of coffee grounds. I'll have to give that a try!

    • @briandawkins984

      @@TheSpurgeonPiper There is one other thing I’ve done that works. Put the pipe in a low temperature oven - about 100 degrees F for an hour. This works by driving off the smelly oils in the briar, I think. It also cures loose pipe stems by shrinking and drying the briarwood. I have done this a couple of times for either problem with good results. And no ill effects. But it is obvious to keep the heat low.

    • @TheSpurgeonPiper
      @TheSpurgeonPiper  2 роки тому +2

      @@briandawkins984 I'll definitely bear that in mind. I have a restored estate pipe that I've done countless salt treatments on but still has that old, musty tobacco smell lingering. I'm currently attempting the coffee ground method but if that fails, I may give the oven method a try.

    It is said that smoking a tobacco in a pipe that has been well ghosted with that same tobacco brings out the nuances of it.

    Aromatics should also be separated right? Like I have a cherry aromatic that i enjoy but I guess i shouldn't drop in some vanilla aromatic or something?

    This is a really good video. I just started the hobby myself and I am a little daunted by all the specifics of everything. I bought a Crown Jewels pipe that has pre carbon layer as well as a tin of Bourbon Plum Pudding from Seattle Pipe Club, however I am afraid it will ghost my first pipe. The thing is coming tomorrow so I was wondering what you think. Side note, I’ve heard about people using bourbon and rum to clean pipes so I’m not sure if something that has a high proof would remove any ghosted flavors better. God bless you and thanks for any input.

      If this is your only pipe, I would smoke the blend. If you can handle the extra expense, grab some corn cob pipes.

    Thoughts on this: I have a new Xmas briar pipe. I'd like to use it for all my Xmas tobacco blends. I'm thinking i should clean/ream after each use in order to prevent ghosting since most of these blends vary in toppings/casings. Or if you have any suggestions how to approach this outside if getting another Xmas pipe or cobs. Thanks and keep up the great videos.

    • @TheSpurgeonPiper

      Reaming it every time you smoke a Christmas blend would probably get old fast. I would designate a pipe or two to those blends for simplicity. Thanks for the support!

    I am 80 percent aromatic blends and it seams I have a cheery tobacco that has messed up most of my pipes. CULT, blood red moon might be the one. I enjoyed that first tin. Own 4 more tins and not sure of opening another tin yet as it was smoked in all my pipes. So be warned what he is saying.
