Would you try using pair of electronic compass, like LSM303 ? One placed on robot and one on person, moving is calculated by algorithm, which trying to keep same difference in magnetometers pair. With MPU 6050 we will have two stable (without accumulating errors) directions, one magnetic and one gravity

I do a lot of experiments, and I assure you that this solution I made works well, is simple and does not cause errors.
