About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
I'm a bass player and even I can hear the difference between live drums and drum samples.
Magnumenforce guys this one is smart
Thats pretty good for a Bass Player...
Ah yes, finally a bass player that can take a joke
Mehhh, drum samples sound good if you know what you're doing. Will never replace live drums though, ever.
@@IMAGE_NT_HEADERS Michael Jackson did it well. Tbf I've not heard anybody else do it as good or any better since.
Holy shit! Me and my friend made it onto SMG! (1:12) One of the bucket list things has been crossed off! That conversation carried on for a short while longer after these screen shots! Thanks glenn!
I'm sorry broh... I'd have lost my shit and smacked that goober drone over the head with a skillet a long time ago -.-
SoundBoss5150 😂😂 he's my best mate so i excuse most of his bullshit 😂
That's the thing about being in bands with your friends tho, you have to be stern with them and take them to school when they insist on doing things the wrong way, and THEY need to be tough enough to understand that it's not personal, and if they're up in their feelings about it, maybe they need to take an honest reevaluation of weather or not they're willing to do everything in their worldly power to ensure success, including but not limited to, trusting the wisdom of those who are more knowledgeable and experienced than themselves. My best friend plays bass in my band too and he's not the whole package I would expect from a bass player I was paying to play on my sessions, but these videos have certainly helped nudge him in the right direction... gradually ;-)
Save it for the Semantics Dome, E.B. White!!
6:15 Our former vocalist pulled that trick on us. And ran off with the band's money, and spent it on tatoos. And claimed to be "too good for us". Never got hold of the tracks, and haven't heard from him since. I bet you won't be surprised he's a mic cupper *facepalm
(yes, we were naïve idiots back then. And probably still are.)
I'm playing my guitar through a cheap amp at home. i asked a former band mate for advice on what i should buy once i get cash together and his quote was " Get anything line 6, dude." ......... SMH
+Nathan Krone lol
I wish I could afford a sander like that
lol
Dude, you owe us four months worth of this absolute gold. I hope you're all okay in your personal life and I apologise if there's anything major going on. Your work is awesome and I'm missing my fix 😂
Hey Glenn, what about running the ''stupid musician's voice" through autotune in next episodes? :D
Don't forget to tempo align/beat match it.
Dude, no one want's to listen to Cher.
THat would sound like Zimos from Saints Row.
I put that same idea, but deleted it since I saw yours. Didn’t wanna step on your toes. Anyways, I love it, maybe not the whole episode, but a part OR have it kick in when Glenn starts yelling and goes on his hilarious rants.
You think Glenn's got a license?
I was laughing so hard at the way you were reading the texts. ROFL. XD
That last one.
When it comes to little local venues, and bands playing to a few friends, and other bands, it really isn't a big deal if a non-headliner band has planned to get another friend or bands member up on stage to guest sing. How boring do you have to be as a venue to ban local bands from having a bit of fun in front of, and with friends... Especially when, that guest singer is like 50% of the audience anyway.
Cowol Jar Woff Yeah, I mean, I get that venue's point. They've probably dealt with heaps of unknowns who are legends in their own minds. But, that venue isn't exactly the Hollywood Bowl, Wembley or Madison Square Garden either so their demands seem very unusual to.
Whats with venues making bullshit rules anyway most of them don't pay bands (just skim off the bands door money and makes a killing on drinks) or pay bands less then minimum wage. The headline band thing at a small pub is bullshit too, there arent that many gigs at small places where the headliner bring 95% of people and the other bands are just there for entertainment (like say a stadium tour gig). Ive seen plenty of gigs where the first band fills the room and the next two have like 3 people.
Couldn't agree more. I always enjoy it when bands bring up people from the crowd to party with them on stage. My band occasionally does that too and we never got bad feedback for it. Of course not for the whole fucking gig but once or twice in a 2+ hours show is totally fine with me.
Come on man, w'eve all been at those shows in small venues when a ton of people take to the stage and pass around a mic. It's annoying as hell and ruins it for people who can have a decent guest or friend.
Wish I had the conversation between my band and engineer. After him waiting over a year after we finished recording,he moved to Florida and never worked on our stuff again. He now thinks he's going to be the next Skrillex
That "no guest vocals" sign honestly really bugs me. if I was a vocalist in a band I'd love seeing people know the words/want to shout them with me on/off stage. Mic grabs are awesome in my opinion, even from locals. It brings a lot of energy and helps the band and audience connect if you aren't already friends. I'm going to a local show tonight and I'm looking forward to how often these guys pass the mic to everyone in the crowd. It's just fun, like a show should be.
It does seem a bit unnecessarily arsey, yeah. I wonder if the venue have the same attitude to guest musicians coming on for one song because that particular song needs an extra instrument that the rest of the band can't play, or don't have the hands to spare to play. You can't just have someone hanging around on the stage during an entire set for just one song!
And yeah, local bands with a decent established local fan base can get a great crowd response.
Go to karaoke then. That's what it's for.
Coming from more of a punk rock background, I agree. If a band wants to have crowd work in their act or bring a guest vocalist to add some punch to a song, let them (though they should be at sound check if they're a planned addition to a song). You hired them to do a job, so let them do it how they're used to doing it. If it's a clunky mess, don't hire them again. Pre-warning against it just seems like unnecessary baby-sitting, particularly when nothing described on the sign would be a liability for the venue (as opposed to signs saying "no stage dives", etc, where physical harm and/or property damage can occur).
Nope. It's a business. When you get hired to do your job, you're being paid as professionals. Act like professionals, don't treat it like it's some kind of open mic.
It all comes down to communication with whoever's coordinating the show. I've seen shows where non-headlining bands had a guest vocalist joining in on a song or two, but only because they communicated with the coordinator in advance. Said coordinator gives the "ok", and on top of that, the band and guest put in the time to rehearse together to make sure everyone was locked in on their parts. So best bet, talk to whoever's in charge of the show and kindly ask about having a guest on stage. If they "yes", be sure your guest vocalist/instrumentalist nails their part. If the answer's "no", just be humble about it and say "no problem, thanks for letting me know". In end, whoever's coordinating the show calls the shots and we as musicians have to respect their decisions. Hope this insight helps! :)
I got similar to the first one not long ago, our new bass player missed our studio time and respond 2 hours AFTER the session that he couldn't play with us anymore. GOOD THING I TOOK THE TRACK MYSELF, DAMN BASS PLAYER
I autotune my farts!
and sound like justin bieber JAJAJAJAJAJAJA
Does it help the smell any?
No but I can cover Bohemian Rhapsody in key
Duuuude!!! hahahaha
It loses its soul when you auto tune. Raw, gutteral farts is where it’s at.
That first text literally happened to me when I was in my old band. I did all of the legwork booking practices. After constantly hearing back from our drummer last minute, I sent a lengthy post saying that I was done with the band. The fucking drummer then asked "what time is practice tomorrow?" after not reading the post I'd just written.
I almost died at that sledgehammer part. Like, litteraly. I was taking a very careful drink of scalding hot coffee and choked on it. Dude. I love these.
NEED HIGH GAIN LOW TOLERANCE SHIRT. WILL SELL KINDEYS. WHERE CAN FIND!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I love binging these, thanks glenn for the laughs!
Thanks for uploading glenn! I needed a break from studying
"Your amp looks like a sander. Somebody needs to send this to Orange!" I am crying my eyes out right now! Hahahahaha!
I love that you put some tiny little fun parts inbetween this 10min long distroshit ad
Nice B-Day present for me! Great as always. Thanks!!!
"Its when we insist on fixing minor flaws that we edit out humanity." - You just accurately described everything wrong with the entire western culture. Kudos.
love all of your videos! thanks for great laughs!!
Don't get the "guest vocalist" hate. As long as the band finishes their set in time, who gives a fuck if their fans want to sing a few lines from their songs.
Love your channel, Glenn!
I brought my own mini studio and learned to mix metal/punk/rock music from you! Youve really helped my band. Although the gear i used meant i had to use a drum program for drums as i didnt have enough mics which sucks as i have a pearl kit that sounds killer before eq but hopefilly i can do it one day!
These videos really never get boring to rewatch. I really wish I had the convo when I was auditioning drummers. I asked if he'd play to a click for recording and he said "i don't play to a click. When you're good enough you can just jam it"
Glenn as usual you're very funny and informative… I would've loved to been able to share some of the text messages etc. I had from my studio days and and/or A&R days at times it was mind numbing! It never ceases to amaze me how stupid musicians, especially can be, and very funny!
We need to have a series like this for tattoo artist and their clients...
Sooo I have a question. I'm a bass player and I change my bass strings once a month and I also practice every week. So what am I then.
Fiction
a mythical creature..... like the unicorn.
jonathan lopez ummm...competent.
A unicorn.
Someone who doesn't need validation on the internet. Keep fighting the good fight sir. \m/
The last one is literally SOMA(Venue in San Diego) in a nutshell. Not sure about now, but that’s how it always was every time there was a local show. If you’ve been a part of the San Diego scene, you know EXACTLY who/what I’m talking about.
I don't even HAVE auto-tune, but I would be so grateful if someone would auto-tune Glenn from 1:45 to 1:56 and post a link in response to this comment. Please?
+Adam Rainstopper lol. I want to hear this too
^^^^^^^Glenn wants to hear it too!
Ask and ye shall recieve, www.dropbox.com/s/aep4ogr70f37fqu/glenn.wav?dl=0
Oh my god, I was mixing my latest song and I dropped everything and laughed with tears for 20 minutes straight.
It make Glenn sound like a monster from Buffy the Vampire Slayer! 10/10
Okay, seriously, buying used strings is fucking disgusting. I get grossed out when my own damn strings start to get old, and I wipe those fuckers down after every use.
Always fun to watch these :)
The Ddrum set/Ampeg cab was mine! LMAO I’m so glad it got on here! That guy was the epitome of a bass player!
I love how "their" is a running gag now ;) Awesome as always, Glenn!
Sounds like your videos have better sound quality, I like it!
Glenn, love your show. Love your advise. Jus want to tell ya that it's their not there when you're writing about people.
Man, I can really relate with the first set of texts. I had a lead guitar player and a bass player who didn't take the band seriously and I actually had something similar happen when trying to arrange band practice so we could hit the studio. I sent him about five texts over the next few days, all opened by him and no response. I ended up forming a new band with people that actually want to go somewhere.
This series always makes me laugh.
This is great Glenn.
This is the first time we've heard our amp confused with a sander.
Glenn you are awesome I finally got my bassist to change his strings after 3 years
+Stupidity At Its Best congratulations! Hopefully it only takes another 4 to get him to practice!
SpectreSoundStudios sadly that's true
You have gave us more than enough stories explaining how 99.9% of the bassists that have come in your studio hasn't changed their strings since the dawn of time I was wondering if you have had this problem with guitarist or if you have had drummers come in with basically a drum head made out of duct tape
STUPID TEXTS from musicians to there engineers OCTOBER 2017 --- *their engineers... :)
Great channel and videos!!! Thank you!!!
I’ve been ghosted by a band mate before. He asked me to play drums on an album with him, which was my first time being in a studio!!! I was excited!!! Not to sound like a Disney Princess or anything, but it was a real dream come true for me!! We even played a few open mics together, and a full on concert!!! But after that, he replaced me for someone who’d work on his next album and become his new drummer. Every time I asked if he wanted to jam with me, he’d just ignore me. And he didn’t really treat me very well. After that I couldn’t take it anymore. I ended the friendship with him.
I know this probably won’t get a South Park voiceover for the viewers comments video, I just had to vent. That said, fuck you, Glenn.
Wow, never knew that. Seems I've been needlessly throwing away my bass strings when I change them, when I should be selling them on ebay!
This the first time I heard that metal screams are going to be auto-tuned
2:13-2:27 is like two South Park characters communicating
Sander Amps - for that good grainy tone! Super High Grit Rectifier! And safe from theft as long as you're not jamming on a construction site!
hey man, nice vids! I play bass / upright. I've been watching your vids for a while actually before I even started playing bass so I basically took everything you said about blass players and do the opposite xD It's been working out amazing so far. Also I was curious what are some of the bands you've recorded?
Drum triggers are necessary sometimes if the drummer doesn't hit consistently. But the trick is, record your OWN samples of the same kit being used in the session, as opposed to loading up XTREME DRUMZ VOL 4 or whatever. This let's you reinforce the drum tracks and make them sound great without worrying you're using a sample that a million people have already used before.
My first pawn shop bass had a big, ol booger mashed-in, flattened, and spot welded at the 3rd fret of the low E. #delightful
Festering Idiocy!!! Love it!
Keep Keeping real man!
JJ
I love these vids!! Lmbo
Oh my Lemmy that gear selling part was painful to watch! So many similar memories from trying to sell gear :D
I really don't get not wanting to record live drums. I love it. I don't have the space for it myself but the studio I work at has an amazing sounding room. It sucks when the drummer can't play to a click but can throw out a Portnoy fill without thinking.
I'm a drummer, and I also do vocals live (full songs and to add the extra dynamic to the lead singer). Played many shows as the only act, 3 or 4 full sets with short break in between. GUEST VOCALS are a nightmare!!! They're never on key, never on time, way to drunk, not ready when their song comes up... I'm sure I'm missing stuff, but I wish ALL clubs would put that sign up, and include the headlining act!
Hey Glenn! Are you a Helloween fan? Love the channel! From Ottawa.
HENTAI FOR LIFE
But seriously, people need to get their shit together, if you can't deliver to your band, DON'T BE IN A BAND!
"The festering idiocy that lies within". That should be on the next thumbnail.
.... this segment is "probably" sponsored by DISTROKID .... that cracks me up.
I'm really gobsmacked at the idea of embracing the sound of used strings. When I was a broke teen, if I didn't have strings, I just didn't play until I had them ASAP. I couldn't imagine taking old dead ones and putting them on my Strat. Just why? I know bass strings are thicker or whatever, but the same shit applies
Bass strings aren't necessarily dead after 2 months, they still kinda sound alive. But 10$ is 10$ too much for used strings.
This is like Christmas every month
Hey Glenn, serious and honest question here: What are the tips for including keyboards and/or synths in metal mix?
Cheers from Brazil.
That 6:52 "nothing but a bunch of jerkoffs" is my new ringtone for my band members.
+SZCZERZO LMFAO!
I love how bass players are too cheap to shell out around 15 euros for some new strings. Used strings? Yuck.
+Emiel Kollof indeed!
Emiel Kollof but they’ll spend 60 dollars on weed
Good bass strings costs atleast 25€ in sweden tho
I don't whose worse: the cheap bassist, the guy selling the used bass strings or the engineer who can't record live drums.
Edit - Or the guy who though the Orange Micro Dark Terror was a sander. I'm probably going with the Sander Dope 😂
I have friends who, instead of buying new strings, they will have one set of strings for all their guitars, and then actually switch the whole set onto a different one when they want to switch guitars. I love my friends, but goddamn they're cheap.
Hey Glenn, what's your opinion about using a bass amp with an electric guitar? Especially in the context of recording. Also, what's your favorite bass amp and what budget bass amp would you recommend for someone who wants to toy with an electric guitar connected to a bass amp. Thanks Glenn, love the show! Cheers from Winnipeg. :)
Just wanted to say thank you for making these videos, yes you slag off the type of musicians that I would class myself as, (Lead guitarist and vocalist) but hey if ya cant handle it..........GROW UP. keep up the good work Glen. You Rock :)
The Exglenndables xD... Dont ask, I just woke from a nap and that was in my head.. Wonder how many other movie names you can fit Glenn into xD..
Loved the AutoTune bit around 1:20 since the guy hating on it wasn't blindly doing it. He was definitely right that the best use of AutoTune is for effects; a bit like Frampton's Talk Box, just using modern electronics. Was still, past tense for sure, a somewhat 'okay' use is how Faith Hill claimed to use it: as a rare backup for concerts in case her singing was just slightly off from a sore throat or something (but with modern computers this actually enters the unacceptable range really fast for singers not even trying).
Funny thing is that this isn't the first time I have seen someone trying to sell used bass strings on Craig's List.
Hey Glenn, would you consider making a fearless gear review about the Horizon Devices Precision Drive.
It should read “To their engineers” in your splash screen intro
I sometimes use pitch correction, like when I fucked up during recording with my brother and we recorded everything in the wrong tune. my guitar was tuned but a few hz above what it should be. So I pitch corrected the vocals down a few hz so I could play other stuff with the vocals. Oh yeah, this is in the writing process. I used the same hz correction for the whole track. I think this is the correct use of pitch correction, as a tool of convenience during the writing process.
I like your view on sampled drums. Another bad trend now is over processing acoustic drum kits to the point sounding like samples. I never realized how much of this was going on until I toured. Most of the bands I played with had very amateur drummers but you wouldn't know it if you've only heard their studio recordings. The drums on their albums are impeccable but live they could barely hold a beat.
Hey Glen could you possibly do a couple videos on starting your own studio
I didn't know that dragging guest vocalists on stage was something that happens often.
If you lose the tip of a 1/4" jack in a socket... It's likely that the socket is PCB-mounted and completely enclosed - disassembly will get you no further forward - you'd still need to desolder and replace the socket.
I have fixed EXACTLY this situation *from outside the casing* :
Tilt the equipment so the socket is absolutely vertical.
Take a piece of stiff copper wire, apply a small blob of epoxy resin to the tip.
Insert the wire into the socket, so that it mates with part lodged inside.
Leave it overnight for the epoxy to cure.
In the morning, withdraw the wire (that is now firmly glued to the lost tip).
But try a neodymium magnet attached to a small screwdriver first - it might work.
Cool shirt man! Where can I buy it? Is it on your merch?
Hey Glenn, I may sound like an idiot right now but you can whitelist UA-cam channels on certain adblock chrome extensions. secondly, my school set up our 3 basses new strings, neck adjustment etc. I have to say a setup bass with new strings is somehow easier to play. Do you have any insight on this? is it just my idiocy?
Really wish I could have my texts featured on this series but I'm under duress from the A Capella singers at my university because they threatened to report me to the authorities if the texts got featured.
+Bill Primo when they send you a text, you own it, not them. That's basic copyright law. They can report all they want, but legally you're in the clear to use them as you see fit
See my "creepy Christian Bass player" video. I used the voicemail publicly and legally. Same principle applies.
I'll never understand how people think they get to be anonymous when they text. It doesn't work that way.
SpectreSoundStudios The people at my university are part of the reason why I've had a hard time trying to recruit band members around town. These people even said they were defaming legitimate musicians like myself whenever they had the chance, and yet the management said that they are not even representative of the A Capellas!
I shit you not, it's the people who defend autotune and sampled drums who make my life a living hell.
Send them! What they gonna do send you a threat via text, then you got them by the balls if they do.
MyBichSustained Problem is, the person who put me under duress is actually one of the higher-up's in the University of Waterloo's Federation of Students administration team. If my texts come up on any of the ST series then they are going to report me to my university's faculty Dean.
If I'm going to have my texts featured I need some sort of insurance set up in case I receive any form of backlash from the UW authorities.
Hey glen can you do a video about mobile recording? My bands been thinking about recording some tracks through an iPad while we’re on the road. A lot of people tell us they do all there recordings through auria pro on the iPad for full on albums
Not sure if this counts for a stupid texts episode but I do some writing for a small music website. We just got asked by a stoner metal band if we could review their debut album...a month after it came out. All the obvious jokes!
actually in my country you can get your stuff recorded and mixed for ~60USD per track, but average hourly wage here is like 2,6USD...
by the way I still have the Ddrum set for sale!!! never thought I'd see one of my conversations on here !
+David Barnes I guess it didn't sell that fast then!
love the show man! give my band a shout out? moosebite
i got a question for u guys
i was playing a gig and it was a surprise thing when i was there
the mic was so shit that the top was falling off
i crack down on mike cuppers but i had little choice
should i of walked off ? from bad gear or was i right to carry on
i didnt want to dissapoint even though it was a surprise to me
Hi Glenn,
Been a huge fan of your work since 2015.
I’d like to ask you a question:
I’m writing a song for a singer. Basing on her raw vocal demo (without metronome or tempo of course) recorded probably on an iPhone, I have to write a complete song: harmonies, solos, putting all together with melody and lyrics. The problem is the signature of her demo: it’s 4,5/4 during the chorus. I counted many times and it’s always 4,5/4, and i know i can’t do it in 9/8, cos it’s not the same. And it’s not for the first time - in her other demo verses were fucked up in time signatures as well.
So the question is: Should I tell the singer that writing a song in a 4,5/4 is wrong and give her some advices on time signatures?
Im asking that, cos some musicians I know advised me not to do it, cos «the singer paid for the song, not advices». Some said that «don’t give opinions when nobody asked, otherwise you'll have a reputation of being a showoff for no reason».
So I’m asking you what i should do.
Thanks Glenn,
Cheers from Russia
Never just blame but offer options. If you have this client more often and you talk a little make some suggestions. If you got everything up and running and have enough work, offer two rates...one cheap if they offer a good recording (set a standard) in the right tempo and some higher price for the other shit. Just add that to your business. Add FAQs on your website or fb-page in what form you expect the raw material.
Those aren't just my 2 cents but I'll get notified when glen answers as well.
Hey Glen.
I have beginner recording equipment and I was wondering what I can do to make my tracks ready for mastering?
Hey Glenn, the drummer in my band is currently being an ass and he cant compromise with the rest of the band. He always like playing soft rock songs like stuff from the 50's-60's when the rest of us are brought up by hard rock, punk rock and grunge. Letting him go would be tough considering finding another drummer is very hard. What do u think is the best solution for me and my band?
3:50 I live in myrtle beach sc. I actually seen those strings on letgo
I didn't think autotune detected screams?
I Set My Friends on fire used to use it live and it only ever effected Matt's clean vocals?
Hey Glenn, what do you think about flatwound bass strings on metal? Steve Harris uses them and so did Geezer Butler for a long time, have you ever worked with those?
Not yet, I should really try them out though....
The best treat for Halloween you ask? A new episode of Stupid Musician Texts of course. Thanks Glenn and Happy Halloween everyone.
Edit - 8:09-8:13 LMAO 😂😂😂😂
SMT!!!! I'm gonna go grab my bong, my IQ is way too high for this shit!
"to there engineers" Nice Glenn!
Hey Glenn, what do you think about the Seymour Duncan Blackouts?
First time I've ever heard you mention orange. What your opinion on their amps?
i just bought a line 6 spider v30, and it seems like some people think its a piece of shit. should i return it? and if so, whats a good amp for around 200 dollars for band practice?
since you keep pushing the Distrokid to us, I wonder if the service is usable in Europe? anyone has experience with that? because there's almost no info on the site and I might give it a try if it works :)
Hi Glenn, can you do a video explaining resistance (ohm) on amps and cabs \m/
