Amazing album. Listened to it every day going back and forth from school for two years 98-99. It grew on me everyday. I can't explain why but when I listen to it now it brings tears to my eyes in a good melancholic nostalgic kind of way.
The Proximity Effect is by far their best album to me. It still sounds great today, they perfectly balanced all their strengths on this one. Afterwards they got "too light and breezy" for my tastes, still some good stuff here and there but not what they captured with this album.
@@Terraceviewmaybe we can just rejoice in that two of their most tender, moody, serious, heart-wrenching songs were composed around the same period and ended up on the same record. Paper Trains is another.
I was a pre teen when Hi/Low came out. It was the first album that I ever bought with my own money. I was in high school when this record dropped and I felt it deeply, as we tend to do in our teenage years. It remained a staple throughout my 20s. I’m 40 now in 2024 and it’d been a long while since I threw this on. It feels like a little hidden gem or something, I can’t explain it. It was pretty much a soundtrack when I got my first car. Anyone else who grew up listening to this album must surely understand what I’m trying to convey here. This album expresses those feelings so much better than I could say. Just the first 2 seconds of Slow Down can immediately transport me back to an intense crossroad in my late teenage life when I still had no idea what I was going to do, but The Proximity Effect was one of the albums that helped me cope with my extremely intense feelings while time slowly began sorting things out. I can’t believe how well Troublemaker has aged. It sums up the way that I felt when life was so extremely intense and it seemed like I was hanging on by just a thread?
I love the way the melody changes in the middle of "Hyperspace". The second time I fell in love with Nada Surf was with this tune, the first one was with the "Let Go" set list. What a band!
I love this album more and more as time goes by--whenever they delve into this disc any of these songs are the highlight of their live shows--hope they do a 20 yr anniversary release/tour for this one
I had this album when it originally came out, it came with a cover "why are you so mean to me" but didn't have "robot". I've seen them 5 times, one of my ultimate faves.
Jesus, It has been a long time since I got this album. I am 43 years now and I can give myself more credit for liking the right artist. This is briliant!
I'm having unremedial ( I think I may have invented that word... but I really like it) nostalgia momentarily!!! THANK YOU. JUST THANK YOU!!! You have printed an amazing pattern... not physical, but an amazing psychological pattern between MANY amazing (selective) friends. You've been a staple that has kept old friends (married & shit) still connected. Haha. OK. I listened to the "let Go" album every day--for an embarrassing amount of years....BUT i was the first "bitch" of our 4-person group. (also the only musician --so I betrayed friends...on accident) .. I got married... but I was the first to blow the candle they all blew--eventually. Still totally in LOVE with this.
I thought this album was one of their most commercially unsuccessful album…it sure doesn’t matter when it’s Nada Surf. It’s equally as good as all their other albums selling more copies.
I love nada surf, the first 3 albums and the Stars..,but with the weight is a gift they lost their roughness completely and thus me. Am not saying their other albums lack songwriting talent ,but their high/low signature sound almost vanished completely. This is an awesome record, embracing, but not too smooth, helped me in various occasions throughout the years. Thanks!
Mothers day has such a good instrumental and i like the heavier stuff but i really hate the what if it was your sister/mom argument obviously its a good message but women should be worthy of sympathy without someone having to liken them to someone close to them
I saw them two years ago and they finished with Hyperspace. Mathew said it's just too much fun not to play( at Mr. Smalls) He said we had to sign the chorus because he was afraid he'd lose his voice.
well.. they're not the most famous band in the world But they do have a lot of recognition this album, in particular is not that known although he's awesome in my personal opinion :)
They were Very popular in France than elsewhere. I love them, as i prefer clubs, great specific halls than stadium for concert, i would vote for the actual situation
to each his own, most people would say there are only really 4 bad albums by them and that they've redeemed themselves. also, you don't at least like Pinkerton? that's a new one on me.
This was a great move away from High/Low so can see the angst from the record company, like listening to two different bands almost. This is a solid album, but a follow up grungy album was the way to go after the debut Album ie Popular etc, $$$ wise & Elecktra new that.
Think of the scene around that time. Everyone was still hoping to discover the next Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Goo Goo Dolls/Foo Fighters. "Popular" had that sarcastically angry, pissed-off, mad-at-the-world feel that had ushered Nirvana and grunge into the nineties. That song came out about the time Kurt decided he didn't want to be on the planet anymore (what a crazy period that was! It seemed like EVERYONE we loved was od'ing on something or another). But anyway, every record label wants what they think SELLS. I LOVE this album but honestly, it doesn't sound like anything Kurt, Dave, Eddie, Billie Joe, or Billy C. would put out. That's why Elektra wasn't happy with them.
Je vais les voir le 7 novembre 2016 à reims ils font une tournée en France cela est exceptionnel alors pour tout les fans N hésitez pas à réserver vos places je pense qu'il n y en n aura pas pour tout le monde perso les miennes sont réservées
Geez. Talk about a major departure. Sounds nothing like High/Low, I can't tell if I like or dislike this album yet. I guess I love High/Low that much haha
Where has this gem been my whole life? Wow, this sounds great & has aged like wine!

"80 windows" is probably my favorite and I think is the most beautiful nada surf song.
Almost if it wasn't for Troublemaker
It is.
I cannot disagree
True , and have you ever heard the live-trumpet-version? Wow, mindblowinggoosebumping fantastic, when you search you'll find it
@@Terraceviewmaybe we can just rejoice in that two of their most tender, moody, serious, heart-wrenching songs were composed around the same period and ended up on the same record.

I can't ever say how many times I listened to this album since the moment I bough it. This and 'high/low' just perfect
Good old days... I´m getting old... Exellent album. Thanks
no prob :)
this album will always keep the first place of nada surf's top albums in my eyes. #1 rock album

The best of nada surf.
I had this album when it originally came out, it came with a cover "why are you so mean to me" but didn't have "robot". I've seen them 5 times, one of my ultimate faves.
This album deserves more love
The guitar on firecracker 😍😍😍
Fucking magical. Hasnt seemed to age a day. Powerful powerful album.
80 windows
One of my personal favorites
i cant stop listening to that song, so awesome

super - their best album (the voices!). seen them live in Paris :)
Mother's Day is a piece of delight :-)

Slow Down is beautiful
I think on the whole Nada Surf was and still is underrated, but really, they are such an incredible band!
Brennon Patterson definitely deserves better recognition
Slow Down... Best song on the album in my opinion
+Andrew Holt i hope you know by now you mean so very much to me
love Slow down...foi essa musica que me fez ouvir todo o album. anda sempre no carro desde finais dos 90. adoro
Matthew Caws is my hero.
On Friday I will be able to listen to you as it should be in Valencia!!!!.
What amazing rhythm in Bad Best Friend! #NadaSurfBreaks
One of the best indie albums of all time. Besides happy kid amateur is is my favorite song.
1998?? shiz, this is what I should have been listening to back then... :/
i think back then i was listening to a lot of yo la tengo, built to spill, and radiohead of course.
the 5th song, "troublemaker" reminds me of sunny day real estate, which was contemporary at that time.
@@zitools Yes! Built to Spill, what a great band....need to put them back in the rotation again

Reminds me of my high school 1968....
ya, at 47 I liked these guys...smart sound
Mother's Day still some of the heaviest lyrics in a song.
gracias.
Woah this is so good. I bought an album of them years ago... all I remember is that its sucked; but they apparently do not suck.
alright.. they are all over the place. I dont know
First heard this on a logic skate vid back in the day I think it was a Jason something's section at the beginning. Epic tune
Do these guys ever make a bad album?
Not in my opinion :)
This album is really underrated
there's alot of awesome songs on it !
jordanforever21 hahaha never and they create all of this on their own real Indi music to the bones
nope

I'm here for Mother's Day
cool its goood
Slow Down :D !
Brutal.
I had this on cassette.

90's Weezer and the Pixies's love child. How have these guys NEVER gotten....Popular?
sorry.
well.. they're not the most famous band in the world

@@johnmorgan233 yeah they do. I really only liked one album from Jimmy eat world. 1999 Clarity.
No idea how this didn't catch on but Weezer (aside from the Blue Album) has put out complete shit year over year to fans drooling appreciation...

Jeremy Schep Pinkerton didn't connect with me, but enough with Weezer. They have some decent tunes.
Hazy Sativa understood, I love 6 of their albums dearly but blue is the best, period, I will give you that
this does sound like weezer, what is happening.....
Why did Elektra throw such a hissy fit? There was plenty of single material on this one, IMO
the 2 stand-out pop singles, mother's day, and robot, especially made the patriarchy's ears burn. telling, isn't it?
fair point. still though, it's a very accessible album. kind of like The Replacements meets the 90s :)
also, the lyrics for Mother's Day have been in my head ever since the Brock Turner case. Very angering.

Where is spooky? I thought that was on this album as a hidden track. I want to say it was like 14
I guess it was on a different version or something, I didn't know that all those years ago I assume
Is it normal that the song "Why are you so mean to me" is missing ?
Spooky too, left off the Elektra version
