The shadow, The spirit, The green hornet, The spider, The phantom, Dick tracy ahhh all the classic heroes. They don''t really make em like they use to. You should make a series about all this pulp heroes.
I'm a big fan of all the golden age pulp heroes, and I am a HUGE fan of The Shadow. I have all of the currently available Radio Dramas, a complete [digital] collection of the novels, all the comic books, Including the Batman crossovers,and all the movies, serials, and the TV Pilot. I think he's far more intimidating than Batman, Less gimicky, and just far more interesting. Of the various "Versions" [Radio, pulp, movie, eyc.] I find the best to be the one from the pulps. He could NOT make himself invisible, but was highly skilled in using the shadows for concealment. Think the Ultimate Ninja.
I was already familiar with 'the Shadow', when I saw the 1994 film. I realized that this was Bruce Wayne, & that Alec Baldwin would be a perfect Bruce Wayne--had they only leapt upon it.
I've read most of the Shadow Magazine stories. You used to could get them in .pdf online. Love the character. I'd say The Shadow as a character was a combination of Batman (detective and training angle) Moon Knight (use of agents for target acquisition) and Punisher, because The Shadow had no qualms about gunning down mobsters. Little bit of perspective on the magazines. the author turned out two novella size stories a month. On a manual typewriter. Try it.
Whereas I would say that Batman, Moon Knight, and Punisher are all Inspired by The Shadow, as his history predates all of the above. I see what you are saying though These and many many other costumed heroes have all taken something from The Shadow, and amplified it, but None of them, Not even the Batman come close to the original for raw Bad-assitude.

There used to be a station here in Philly that would run the old radio shows.I use to read the novels and tape the radio show with my cassette player. I loved it when I was growing up.

I stumbled across him by accident because my local library had a bunch of the old radio shows available. OMG they were so awesome to listen to. And what was interesting was to think about how all the tropes and whatnot we think of as cliches for Superheroes, detective stories, etc. Were fresh and brand new when the Shadow was being aired on the radio. Just goes to show how much things have and haven't changed in nearly a century.
I was first briefly introduced to The Shadow as part of the paper I researched in HS focusing on the old radio shows but hadn't thought much about him until I saw the 1994 movie. While there are aspects of the movie which I thought could have been better, it was always the first scene in which he appear on the bridge that was the perfect view for me of the character. Much more recently, I discovered the recent Dynamite comics interpretation of The Shadow that I would suggest is must reading for anyone interested in the story line. I do believe that he is worthy of another shot on the big screen and as such, should be treated in a dark and thoughtful way.
The old batman was, the new batman that is rebooted, reinvented etc and everyone knows and love have nothing to do with the shadow, the only version of batman that I can call "shadow ripoff" is the old gun carrying one aka the batman that no one cares about or consider to be a definitive version of his character .... look at any modern story of batman theres a TON of difference between the characters

On occasion, I'd here people emulate "The Shadow Knows" (attempt of imitating the laughter). I think I saw some live action version before the 94' movie...All I remember was thinking "HE"S a *good guy?!"*
Big fan of the character. It's just too bad no one has really done him justice. There is so much there to be tapped into, but no one has really presented the character enough to really engage the super hero loving public.

One thing I've always like about The Shadow, is his lack of sympathy towards criminals. It's become a joke at this point, but it's true, the only reason Batman constantly fights the same villans, is because he always spares them. (And because it spared Kane and Finger from having to write a new character every month.) The Shadow doesn't just fight crime and evil, he eradicates it. He has no problem killing, he does it all the time and unlike Batman, actually manages to make criminals afraid of him.
I've always like the Shadow. I think he's the original vigilante. He has ordinary clothes. Uses guns, and the power of the mind also known as psychological warfare. I'd like to see him remade as a composite crime fighter. A combination of John Wick, Donny Yen, and make him Asian to add to his mysterious powers to cloud men's minds. Its a lot to ask of Hollywood. It would have to start in social media. Or maybe even in the real world. Who knows, only the Shadow knows.

I've enjoyed the radio plays and movies and would love to see another movie or tv show I've never read the comics so I only ever knew about Cranston but it was obvious to me in the movie that the ring was basicly like a beeper, might have flashed morse or someother code I forget.

By the time he turned in the The copy for the 3rd 1 the 1st 2 had sold out on stands so they commissioned him to keep Writing until they turned it into a monthly and then eventually a twice monthly book. Movies and TV shows didn't come out until later. It was radio books Movies Cereals... And Batman was not influenced by the shadow. Bob Cain and bill finger straight up ripped it off and plagiarized and sometimes were and sometimes word-for-word .

That's a cop-out. The '30s Shadow fought mobsters, corrupt pols, drug dealers, real estate swindlers, money-grubbing bankers, and other human evil exclusively, as did most of the old pulp heroes before the radio networks were prevailed upon -- by their sponsors, who were beholden to Wall Street -- to take their plots in a supernatural direction. It was felt that the human-foe storylines hit too close to home at times (Superman once fought the KKK in the late '40s!), and might lead kids to have "un-American thoughts" about the "free market", capitalism, democracy, and other real-life institutions.
In the Pulps the shadow disguises himself as multiple people from Lamont to kent Allard and others (Unless I'm wrong Kent allard is who he really is) only 13 books in but the its pretty much set up to have you trying to guess who the shadow really is the only person you know he isn't for sure is Lamont because in the third book the shadow disguised as Lamont talks to the real Lamont Anyway as you can tell by my avatar I like the shadow started reading his stuff in early 2018 and he went to my #1 spot when it comes to heroes replacing batman (the shadow is pretty much chad batman that kills best way I can describe him without going into too much detail)

The Shadow didn't inspire Batman, Batman was plagarized from the Shadow by the admission of Bill Finger (original co-creator and writer)

I still remember THE MUPPET BABIES SHOW and the parody they made out of this... And that´s how I met the character.
