I would like to think that Richey is alive somewhere, but his mental health at the time of his disappearance does not inspire confidence in this statement. He was in a real bad way with the cutting and drinking. I think he may have taken his self harm to the point that it may have caused him to lose his life. He had gotten to that point on a couple of other occasions with his self harm previously. Where ever he is, I hope he has found the peace that he was soo desperately needing and seeking.
I’d like to think he’s still alive somewhere, but considering all the cutting, drinking, and mental issues he had at the time he either took his self-harm it too far and it cost him his life or he really did jump off the Severn Bridge and too his death
The manics are one of the most underrated bands on earth. All of their work, especially the first three albums are masterpieces. Thank you for shedding some light on them.

Not really, "The Holy Bible" is often regarded as one of the albums that defined the 90s and Britpop among critics and popular opinion. "Everything Must Go" is regarded as a prime example of a comeback album.
The UK bands of the 90s are underrated only if you are talking about how the US often ignored them... in places like Japan and South America, they're anything but underrated.
Holy Bible was a great record. The rest were decent but not masterpieces
Richey has strong parallels to Syd Barrett. Both were prodigies at song writing and led the bands initial artistic vision, however they quickly got overwhelmed with the lifestyle and they never reached their full potential. Furthermore, the bitter irony of the band becoming more successful after their departure with the bassist taking over the songwriting duties
His band mates must really love & miss Richie. To put 25% of the income made from Manic Street Preachers into Richies' account to this day....filled my heart with warm & loving happiness to the point where I thought my heart would implode!

Many bands do that after a member passes etc… Even Pink Floyd made sure to include Barrett songs onto compilations etc so that they could collect royalties and send them over to Syd’s family who were taking care of his money.

@@cactaceous Not Pink Floyd, only David Gilmour, and he didn't just deposit money, he made sure the royalties from Barrett's work went to Syd and his family. That's not a common thing, don't bastardize it.
They didn't include Syd's work because they had to or because "they were angels," it had its own merits... Waters only used Syd's compositions until it was useful to him.
It was Gilmour who reintroduced "Astronomy Domine" back into the band's concert in 94.

In 1990 my then girlfriend decided to start a venue for young bands who found it hard to get a gig in London and put an ad in Melody Maker asking for any interested bands to send a demo. We got all sorts but one piece of white label vinyl with an interesting sleeve hit the doormat. It sounded fresh and raw and had an element of punk brashness to it. Upon listening I thought they sounded pretty good and suggested she give them a gig, but because they were based in Wales and she could not afford to pay them enough to cover their expenses (she also disagreed with my view that they were a decent band) she refused to offer them a gig. I argued that they knew they would not make any money because of the distance but were prepared to come and play anyway, but all to no avail. The name of the band? Manic Street Preachers. I thought it was a great name as well and imagine if she had given them a gig in South East London back then. We split up a few months later very acrimoniously. She kept the demo disc. I often wonder what happened to that disc and how much would that be worth now?
I was obsessed with the Manics as a teen. I was 16 when he went missing and was devastated. It's the only mystery in this world I want the answer to.

Richey was a brilliant mind and incredible poet, but he had to escape all the unwanted attention. He both saw and felt all the ills and sicknesses of the world and absorbed it like charcoal; soaking in the mundane horrors of others' lives while having no way to release it for himself, but the weight of the world was more than he could bear. Whether he died or disappeared is irrelevant - he did his service to Us and then relieved himself of the duty. He earned my unwavering respect. Stay Beautiful.

I first discovered Manic Street Preachers in ‘07 when I started to get sick.
Richey’s lyrics about depression and alienation made sense to me at an extremely difficult and confusing time.

i hope you had a great time! i saw them for the first time in vancouver on nov 3rd. i was really just going to see suede and didnt know anything about the manics, but from the first second i was mesmerized. i think i like them even more than suede now!
@@robyn2628 Man I'm so jealous of both of you lol I'm a big Suede and Manics fan. They, alongside Smashing Pumpkins, are my top 3 bands of all time. I saw Suede live here in Brazil in 2012, and the pumpkins in 98 and 2010. Manics have never played here sadly.
@@HeyDeniow haha dont worry, im jealous of my two-months-ago self too. i wish i had the concert to go to again and relive. it was just such a dream pairing, the manics and suede. i even got to touch bretts sweaty back! the only way the concert could have been any better would be if i had gotten to touch nicky's sweaty back instead (how is it possible that there actually exists someone as cool as nicky wire????)
im not that familiar with the smashing pumpkins but i should really look up some of their stuff if someone with the good taste to like suede and the manics recommends them!

@@robyn2628 Smashing Pumpkins are or were a great American band worth checking out. However, few bands are as great as Suede and Manics. Can’t understand why they don’t have more fans in North America.

Fun fact, his stage name was Richey James. All the press used his real name since he’d gone missing.

I think it makes more sense that he tried to disappear and had a new identity, but since he has mental health issues he could have easily been hospitalized again but under his new identity, and either died there or is still there living in captivity
Most empathetic folk don't like to think of him jumping from the Severn Bridge. A horrible brutal lonely death. It's totally understandable to look and hope for alternatives. Sadly I think he was in a desperate place and probably sought the ultimate act of oblivion

My first ever gig was the Manic Street Preachers and I got to see Richey play. 1992 I think.
I choose to believe that he’s still out there, living his life in the recluse and peace that he’s clearly always wanted.
If I recall they still set Richie’s gear up on the stage at their shows, as well.
I've been thinking a lot about Richey in the past few days. It's kinda eerie to see one of my fav channels taking about him right now.

Insomnia is one of the worst shit you can experience. It triggers a downward spiral of mind and body.
I have an upper arm sigil, because Richey had one and I thought it was a great design. And I struggled with self-mutilation too, my torso is like a topographic map. I can't tell you how many girls have seen me take my shirt off and been speechless, and not for the right reasons.
Wherever Richey is, I hope he's at least at peace. And if he could see this, I hope he knows his memory is cherished.

Richey was my entryway to the Manics: I was in my early teens and dealing with mental health problems and there was no dialogue around those things in my school system so I had never learned terms like depression. Through the literary links that the Manics put in their music: Sylvia Plath, Arthur Rimbaud, Franz Kafka, I was introduced to a universe of emotions that I had never previously known.
When he disappeared in 95 I was absolutely distraught.
I continued to follow and support the Manics after Richey’s disappearance but none of their efforts touched me quite in the same way.

I believe he's out there. As mentioned he had family that successfully disappeared and he was so intelligent that he would know how. Find it so disgusting how the police, media est covered Richey, before and after his disappearance. I see a lot of Sid Barret in Richey and I believe if he had stayed around in the medias vision they would have tormented him like they did to Sid . Even though I’m not completely Welsh (my grandmother and grandfather from my father’s side were Welsh) I did feel some Welsh pride when the Manics were getting some exposure and attention. They only found truly huge success when they dropped Everything Must Go, but I was a fan of theirs from the Richey days and I remember feeling gutted when he decided to vanish.

Manics weren't the same musically after Richey left, they lost their, 'edginess ', that, 'attitude ' that was prevalent on Generation Terrorists.

They did their best work without him.
@@sandelic1 they found mainstream success after he vanished. Maybe the narrative of his disappearance made their story more marketable but their best music was when Richey was in the band and their successful breakthrough album after he disappeared features a lot of his lyrics.

This is one of my favourite of your videos. THe m ystery aspect makes it really fascinating. I love that a guy can just disappear like taht, as tragic as it was for all his friendsa nd family. Like to think he's out there somewhere.

He was a troubled guy as soon as I saw that word he cut into his arm i thought, "Oh no. As soon as he hit that rock n roll age of 27, he was never getting past that. I hope whatever happened it was quick, and he is now resting in peace. Manics are one of my favourite bands, and they are from 40mins up the Rd from me. Long live the manic street preachers.

Hey man, love your content. A suggestion though: while editing your videos, put a loudness meter across your audio master bus and keep an eye on the overall program loudness. Your videos are coming in at an extremely quiet -35 LUFS. The target for UA-cam is typically around -14 LUFS, a full 21 dB (average loudness) louder than your videos are registering. So you'd need to turn up your audio by a pretty extreme margin in order to get them to compare against other YT videos' audio levels.

@@rnrtruestories This one was particularly quiet, but I've noticed it a few times here and there. I'm taking a listen to your last few uploads and watching my loudness meter as I go:
- Def Leppard is coming in around -23.5 LUFS (on the quiet side)
- Korn is averaging -16.5 LUFS (sounds just right to me)
- Dave Mustaine is averaging -17 LUFS (again just about right)
- Van Halen is averaging -27 LUFS (pretty quiet)
- Richie Edwards/this video is averaging -34 LUFS and is definitely quiet enough to require a bump in listening volume to hear clearly.
Spoken word narration doesn't necessarily need to be blaring loud so maybe shooting for -14 LUFS program loudness would be a bit much. The ones that are registering around -16 to -20 sound fine and fall right in line with other YT content without being overbearing.
A quick hi-pass filter on your voice at about 80 or 90 Hz would be another good addition, just to get rid of the low frequency 'P' and 'B' plosives that frighten us subwoofer guys hehe.
Anyways, I hope my ramblings are a little helpful. Keep up the great work man, I appreciate the work that you put into your videos.
Sooo many UA-camrs do this and it bugs me. My theory is they edit with really nice headphones with the volume whacked up full and as a result master the audio at a lower level.

I remember back in the early 1990's growing up in Seattle, WA, USA. They were known to the underground scene, and this was back in the days where we had to hunt down catalogues and order snail mail to Europe in hopes of getting your tape cassette or new CD via post around 6 months later. I remember these long conspiracy conversations at parties for decades after.
Sadly, I have always felt in my core that Richey was truly gone. I don't know if it was accidently or deliberately. That's just where such severe spiraling leads eventually. May he RIP.

If u had HBO N THE mid 80s,does this story not remind u of a movie that played on HBO alot back then. Now that I think about it,not only did THE lead singer fake his death because he felt his music was REAL and he didnt want to put out what the label wanted him to put out. He also faked his death by sending his car off a bridge into a river where he was presumed drowned and dead. I've heard people say he did saw the movie although it's just people on the internet, not a reliable source. Given that the movie has references to Rimbaud's A Season in Hell, Rech's favorite poetry collection, it would be right up his alley.

My father told me about this around 2010 when I got a cd called pure hard rock, it had their cover of suicide is painless and I’ve liked the band ever since.

Wow I remember this channel already made a video about Richey's disappearance once that seemingly has been deleted since.
I am glad that this story has been uploaded again since it is not as well-known as it should be. I love the Manics, especially the Richey-era when they were able to redefine themselves with every album and their music was more scratchy and powerful. Richey's lyrics were something else, he expressed thoughts and feelings I can feel are my own but I could have never expressed them in that way. He was the rockstar I could identify with the most. I was only 4 when he disappeared so I discovered his works many years later and I thought a lot about what could have happened to him. By now I have accepted that maybe we'll never know, and that this is what he wanted, but I feel so sorry for his family, for his parents who have already passed away without ever knowing what has happened to their son, for his sister and of course for his bandmates, who have not been able to find closure until now.
I have a feeling Richie is out there - somewhere!

@@howareyou857 I think it's more that US labels didn't know how to market them. They're not grunge, pop-punk or metal, so they don't fit neatly into a marketable category. Their lyrics are angry, dark and political, which automatically makes them less commercial. The first time I ever heard of them was in '93 when the the radio in NYC played the song "Sleepflower". I really dug it and became a fan- so I guess they tried to market it to Americans, but it just didn't catch on. They just don't fit neatly into any "box"
@@Oct8pus yeah you may well be right. Tbfair they didn't particularly fit into the early 90s UK music scene either. There has always been a strong metal scene in the South Wales valleys so it's not surprising there is a Metallica influence to their music ( as well as The Clash etc). South Wales has a proud Socialist heritage with Nye Bevan being the founding father of the NHS. Hence the politicised lyrics that are certainly influence by their childhood environment.
@@Oct8pus A song like Natwest, Barclays, Midlands, Lloyds isn't going to make much sense to the US college circuit. Motorcycle Emptiness might have crossed over if marketed well. I like early Manics but probably prefer Super Furry Animals myself. I see Gruff and James out and about as they live quite locally to me now.

He was seen walking along the Severn bridge by a security guard and his car was found close by. It is very likely he jumped. His body will have been carried out by the tide into the estuary. Its not a far reach for his remains not to be found. He was really not a well person at the time, sadly

I saw them at the Wulfrun civic hall in Wolverhampton. They were great but you could hear Ritchie often wasn’t playing. Shame. I’m half welsh and the beautiful country deserves better.
Richie was one of if not the best poet of his generation. A tortured genius.
Most of us take our semi stable mental wiring for granted, but imagine if the options to attain stability were limited, or if a standard modern lifestyle just aggravated those conditions.
It's hard, but not impossible, to fall off the map without income.But it depends, also, if you see it as a matter of life and death.

Mental health is everything remember that now. It seems that Dean and the other guys knew something was wrong with Richey and couldn't say it to his face. But I respect them for how they carried on with grace after he was gone.
I would always tell friends family people in my world that if they ever felt like killing themselves to come to me, thinking because I had a life I had to work at to get things I could only dream of before, and I thought by showing them how I did it and how great your life could be that would make them think twice,

Yes it does, I've tried to uplift souls, but some people just arent looking to change their minds. Sometimes it can be a terrible thing for someone to achieve their "dreams", since life sometimes doesn't offer the imagined peace, nor another dream that seems worthy of striving for, because often times in the journey of striving is where many of us find our good times. In the end we all have the same dismal destination, so we need to enjoy the journey best we can. When we feel trapped, it becomes like a fox with a foot stuck. We can choose the final shortcut, or gnaw our way out and leave the things trapping us. People sometimes don't know how to disappoint those around them by scraping their trappings. Be it spouse job or house, but their is nothing more heartbreaking than knowing someone would rather put the yoke on everyone else and completely cash out.
Even when we don't know someone but through their art, we feel that we do, and those early exits from the stage hurt so much. Thier life and art seems like a beacon along the path, and suddenly they say nope sorry im out. I thought Anthony Bourdain had one of the greatest jobs, and was always so happy to see a working guy break out of the rat race sweating in kitchens with his writing, and then getting a travel show to eat drink and see the world, but bam, nope, and now have trouble even watching his show. Would've rather seen kurt cobain run and hide away and even put the guitar down than to exit so early. I think of things like that when i yearn for why doesn't a musician come out with more tunes. Whether it was shugie otis making a couple of albums and hiding away or andre 300 never coming out with a solo album or doing another outkast album. Happiness is an elusive thing and it's not derived much from stuff. People need to tend to their head

they are pretty well known here in Latin America at least, in fact James Dean Bradfield has come lota of times to Chile, he linda likes this place and even wrotte some stuff inspired by Victor Jara (pop singer killed by the CIA backed coup d'tat of Pinochet in 1973)

My theory is that he died some time before 2008 and lived a double life as other people. I’m sure that instead of killing himself, Richey decided to take on the identity of others and lived a life of drugs, booze and hookers until it caught up with him. He probably didn’t like the attention but loved what came with the perils of stardom, which probably took him down in that 1995-2008 time span.

He has been considered legally dead for quite a few years now. His Dad sorted it out so his sister wouldn't have that responsibility when they passed away. I believe.
