I think Marawi is the 1st time that the modern Philippine armed forces fought an opposing force in an urban setting they are usually more accustomed to jungle warfare so Marawi was basically a trial by fire for them they likely done training for urban ops but never on this scale. The last time they ever fought in an urban setting in such a scale was during in WW2. Also for some Philippine SF like the Ph Scout Rangers the Battle of Marawi was the test mission for their recruits to graduate unfortunately for some the graduation of the recruit would be posthumous.

Amazingly, the Spec Ops performed well despite being briefed on the crash course of urban combat!
Also the battle marked a watershed moment in the Philippines when for the first time ever the Moro Liberation Front, which was an insurgent group, call for a truce with the Philippine government so that they can fight together against ISIS!

lol what are you talking about. What is the Zamboanga Siege of 2013?

    • @alcor4670
      @alcor4670 24 дні тому +5

If were talking about stereotypical urban engagements, the PH had two: Marawi and Ipil, Zamboanga. But there also were several failed coup attempts that happened within Metro Manila itself since the end of the Marcos dictatorship in 1986, the largest of which happened in 1989. _All_ of the major military bases and airfields in Metro Manila -- including the General HQ of the AFP -- were taken by rebel forces. The presidential residence was strafed and bombed as well.
These engagements, both urban and jungle (of which there are many) has actually given the PH military a *lot* of experience when it comes to actual warfare. They've been constantly fighting communist insurgents, religious fanatics, and coup plotters since *_WW2._* Despite the obvious lack of military hardware in comparison to other countries like the US or the PRC, an argument could be made that -- if soldiers from all countries only had a rifle, a sidearm, and a knife -- the average Filipino soldier is probably one of the most dangerous among all of them.
Edit: Heck, they're smart enough to figure out that the RPGs ISIS used in Marawi couldn't penetrate *_wood_* without detonating. That's why there're these vids of plank-cladded PH APCs in Marawi with the names "Mad Max", "Fury", and "Free Wifi".

I was in high school at the time ~20km away from Marawi city center. I was living in the dorms at the time. The night of the attack, all of the dormers at the school were called into an emergency meeting in the lobby. We didn't think much about it even as we heard the news and thought that this was some small insurgency that can be resolved in 2-3 days. What we didnt expect was a truck full of Filipino soldiers coming in the middle of the night to set up security around the campus and literally told us to pack up our stuff and leave first thing in the morning. One of my batchmates was the daughter of the Mayor of Marawi at the time, and she was escorted off campus with super spec ops looking guys with TAR 21s and P90s (compared to the M16s and the M14s that the Army had at the time). Thats when we knew shit REALLY hit the fan. There was a MASSIVE (I cannot express how MASSIVE) traffic jam towards Iligan city, which was the nearest and safest city outside of Marawi at the time. Iligan was ~35km away from Marawi, and the city was CROWDED with evacuees. It was really insane to think about.
There was also a story about one of my classmate's dad's employees who WALKED from Marawi city to Iligan city. WALKED!! In the scorching sun. Amongst thousands of other people who were fleeing during the eve of the insurgency. Without water, and carrying a bag full of important documents for the family he was working for. Absolutely insane.
I have plenty of other second hand stories about the event from my HS friends who were living in Marawi at the time but were my dormmates as well. Just insane to think about that its been so long since it happened already.

I mean if you know as a fact that is what the Philippine special forces use and they don’t use the SR-25 then sure I’ll admit I’m wrong but to my eyes it doesn’t look the same.

I mean they don't really have the same roots. Islam has more in common with ancient Arabic tribal religions than it does with the other Abrahamic faiths. The Kaaba in Mecca for example was originally a polytheistic shrine of the Arabian tribes.
The Abrahamic adoptions into Islam was purely done to make conquest and holding onto their conquests of the Christianised (during the 7th century) Egyptian and Levantian lands easier. It's also why Islam adopted many Zoroastrian concepts when they conquered the Sassanids.
Saying they have the same roots would be like saying that 5th century Pagan Celts shared an Abrahamic root with Christianity because they adopted some Christian concepts, or that Christianity has Pagan roots because it adopted Easter.
Islam was influenced by the Abrahamic faiths of the time, it did not originate from Abrahamic roots.

I'm from the Philippines and I live in a city a few hundred kilometers from Marawi. Mindanao (a major island that Marawi is part of) houses a huge chunk of the Muslim population in the Philippines. There have been many insurgency groups in Mindanao ever since the 1960s to the present moment, most of which are radical Muslim groups that have their own goals, like seceding from the Philippines or establishing their own semi-autonomous region. However, many of these insurgencies are quite "tame" and have had bilateral discussions with the Philippine government for a long time. However, the ISIS militants during the Marawi siege were very radicalized and wouldn't listen to reason like some of the other militant groups in the area that would lay down their arms.
I have friends who are both Christian and Muslim who have lived within the same community. I personally think that these ISIS militants represent a very small but very batshit crazy part of religious indoctrination - in the same way, that there are Christian cults that would blindly follow a megalomaniac leader. So what radicalized these people? Ignorance fueled hatred. That's why many of these ISIS militants are actually targeting schools and universities in the area because they want to create a divide between Christians and Muslims.

3:10 That "AR" is the "Stoner Rifle 25 (SR-25) semi-automatic sniper rifle/designated marksman rifle". Firing a 7.62x51mm catridge, in either a 10 or 20 round box magazine. Loosely based on the AR-10, the rifle is 60% interchangable with the AR-15/M-16 rifles. But excluding the upper/ lower reciever, barrel, bolt carrier group, & hammer. The gun has a "free-floating barrel", meaning that the handguards are attached to the reciever & does not touch the barrel.

no it's not, it's the MSSR (Marine Scout Sniper Rifle), it's a ultra accurized AR-15 made from aftermarket parts but manufactured in-house by the Philippine Army's Government Arsenal
it still uses 5.56mm from a 25-round straight box magazine,
Filipino SOF units prefer 5.56mm due to the closer ranges that jungle warfare entails, usually DMR ranges in jungles are more 50-200m than the regular 400-1000m in open battlefields,

One mall even now had Philippine troops guarding it. And while the alertness has waned over time especially after the war, it never really fully loosened back to prewar levels. On one occasion, they were attached to a sniper team, and my friend took up position in the sniper nest. One of their practices was to tape over the red recording light so as not to draw attention. But on this occasion, he forgot to tape it over so his light was shining for the whole damn world to see! Next thing he knew, a sniper round zipped past his head, and he was quickly pulled down by the soldier he was with.

These guys are Army's, the Light Reaction Regiment (LRR). At the battle of Marawi time frame, the Designated Marksman rifle was the SR25, Mk 11 Mod 0, in 7.62. This is NOT the Marines MSSR variant. This is more obvious at @ 5:14 of the video, and the clearly a 7.62 lower and mag size. I am also surprised that no-one has commented on the Rem 700 @ 1:10.

Its Abrahamic religions, where Judaism, Christianity and Islam all stem from. The Judaic and Christian common root carries on for far longer, until Jesus, whereas Islam separates far earlier, at Abraham's sons. To a non-religious person, the differences may seem minor, but are actually quite substantial when you dig into them
They may have the same root, but the reason there is so much conflict between Islam and the other 2, is because unfortunately there are some extremists, particularly in Islam these days (although the Catholic church wasnt very different in the Dark Ages), that are utterly intolerant of anything else (especially of other Abrahamic faiths).

1:11 They're out in the open because of IEDs.
Maute/Abu Sayyaf would emplace command-detonated or pressure triggered IEDs in places that would likely provide cover for advancing AFP personnel then fire a few rounds down the street when they (AFP) would get close, then blow the explosives when they dove for cover (explained at 6:16). Risking a shot that may or may not hit is a calculated risk preferable to getting caught up in the lethal area of a blast radius. Note that when the soldiers take a knee, it's almost always near established structures, tending to avoid rubble or anything that looks recently damaged.

Because He listened to her wife Sarah who thought it was ridiculous for her to conceive at her age 90+, they weren’t able to wait for the son of the promise which was Isaac. They tried to impregnate Sarah’s handmaid Hagar, who became the mother of Ishmael, the origin of Muslims.

There was a time when Filipino soldiers valiantly fought on several war fronts and earned recognition by the international community (WW2, Korean War, Vietnam War). Decades of corruption and complacency ate away at our prestigious armed forces. The jungle warfare and guerilla tactics that they employed were outstanding but now, new generation forces are unequipped and not fully combat ready. I wish this could end. THIS IS THE TRUTH.
