If you intend to read more fairytale retellings, read these books by Serena Valentino: Fairest of All Beast Within Poor Unfortunate Soul Mistress of All Evil Mother Knows Best
I totally forgot about Ella Enchanted! And it still blows my mind that ACOTAR was loosely based on Beauty & the Beast, I didn’t get that from the book when I read it. But I did LOVE the book. And I didn’t know To Kill a Kingdom or Seawitch were retellings either! Lunar Chronicles and Heartless are absolutely my favorite.
"The Surface Breaks" by Louise O'Neill is one of my favourite books. It takes a nice twist on the original tale plus pays homage to the original "Little Mermaid" book and its darker themes.
The first time I read Ella Enchanted I was nine years old and it changed my relationship with reading. I’ve read it so many times that I have certain passages memorized. I am so pleased that you made this video and really excited that you included Ella Enchanted!
Spinning Silver is awesome! I just finished it today. Another one that sounds interesting is Tiger Lily, obviously TL from Peter Pan lol I heard it’s a bit dark and has a lot of American Indian cultural elements
The splintered series by A.G Howard is amazing. It’s an Alice in wonderland retelling/reimagining. It’s so good. I also read a Peter Pan one that I just loved. It’s from hooks POV. It’s called never never by Brianna R Shrum. I’m pretty sure I’ve read more that I like, those are just the ones I can think of. Also, I read Ella Enchanted when I was in the 7th grade I think. It was one of the first books, after Harry Potter that I feel in love with. Actouly I walked to the public library after school and checked it out. I remember because my dad found me sitting on the corner of the library reading it because I didn’t have a card. He grounded me for not coming straight home after school but got me a library card so I could take it home and read it. That was the only time I was ever grounded. He said he partly happy and mad. Mad because I went somewhere when I was told I couldn’t but happy because just the year before I couldn’t read. Which is why he let me take the book home. He said he would never punish me for loving to read because he was so happy that I could. Lol. I have adhd and dyslexia so it hadn’t come easy to me. Sorry for the long comment! Lol.
I think my favourite retelling that has stayed with me since I read it years ago is Beastly by Alex Flinn. It just makes me so happy and the movie - very different but love the actors in it.
I LOVE fairytale retellings….I don’t love sci fi though. Would I like the lunar chronicles? I’ve seen them on so many people’s recommendations, but I’ve always skipped them because I get bored with futuristic type stories. There must be something there if so many people love them though
I love all the books in the Twisted Tale series. I can't put that series down. I've even made my own fanmade covers for other Twisted tales, and Jen Calonita liked them on Twitter.
I want to read those Twisted Tales! Another BookTuber I follow was talking about doing a fairytale retelling reading month. I hope she does because I plan to binge those then!
I’m not sure if you’ve read it, but Uprooted by Naomi Novik is soooo good as well. It isn’t really a retelling, but does take inspiration from a lot of other fairytales, anyways, i recommend, it’s a really unique book!
I got part of your world as a birthday gift one year try The Fairy-tale Inheritance by Shonna Slayton it's got four retellings two along with a Novella for those two have to do with Cinderella, and then you have Snow white and beauty and the beast
This list is SO good. I’ve been tempted to write a fairytale retelling myself. I’m still knocking MFA Thesis ideas around in my head at that. I am gonna have to pick a few of these ups. And A Court if Thornes and Roses-god I love that book.
Hello!! I really enoyed this video! I have to say, if you like Geekerella you HAVE to read Cinder & Ella... its a really similar history (Cinder and Ella is actually older than Geekerella) it is one my of fav books ever... so I highly recommend it!!!
I'm reading Cinder right now!!!! Love Love Love! 💕💕 Oh wow, ACOTAR is my my TBR for this month and I didn't realise it was a loose B&TB Retelling! Wonderful video Heather - Hope you're having a great start to your week 💕
i had avoided the lunar chronicles because they were so hyped but i think i may have to give them a go soon. On my kindle of course. No room for new books. Starting my Minimalist journey. Flat being practically emptied i have way too much stuff!
I like a good retelling and I love how they are doing villains! Lost Boys is a dark Peter Pan type retelling about origins story of Capt Hook its great!
I knew the lunar chronicles was going to be there your review actually made pick up Cinder again after forgetting about it for a long time and since then I flew through the series and now it’s my favorite series
If you want some adult fairytale retellings Juliet marillier has hearts blood (beauty and the beast) and daughter of the forest (wild swans aka the six swans). Uprooted by Naomi novik. Kiss of the spindle by Nancy Allen Campbell which is a steampunk retelling of sleeping beauty. Also beauty and the clockwork beast by the same author.
I interpreted ACOTAR as a retelling of the myth of Cupid and Psyche, and ACOMAF as a little bit Hades and Persephone. However, my favorite retelling is Heart's Blood by Juliet Marillier, which reads like a somewhat dark, kind of Grimm fairytale version of Beauty and Beast, where the heroine has more agency in the plot.
Quick suggestion: an interesting retelling of sorts is The Changelling by Victor Lavalle. I didn't love it, but I liked it. It's a trip with wild and weird moments that bring in elements of horror. Definitely keeps you on your toes. Anyways, I'm super interested in those Ursala retellings. Thanks for the video!
Mercedes Lackey has 2 series that deal with fairy tale retellings. The Tales of the 500 Kingdoms and the Elemental Masters series. Robin McKinley does an excellent retelling as well.
You’re Going To Love A Curse So Dark and Lonely I know I did 😊 And another series you should definitely check out is The Ravenspire Series I recently discovered it this year and I flew threw each one and they were all awesome there’s four books in the series but the cool thing is that they are four different stories in the same universe which is so cool Happy New Year 🎊🎆🎊🙂
Its been a really big year for The Little Mermaid retellings in YA, there seems to be so many right now. I just read The Surface Breaks by Louise O'Neill which is another one retelling this story and it was really good, quite a short one so a quicker read and sticks quite closely to the story as we know it but it has a great twist and focus on women's rights in it which made it interesting. I'd recommend it.
I would love to get the lunar chronicals this Christmas. But I was wondering can I start by reading winter first cause I can't find the others, in my nearby book shop and I won't be able to order. Is it possible??
I've made my own cover for my idea for a Tangled Twisted Tale, and Jen Calonita liked it on Twitter (Side note: It's rumored that will be after Go the distance.)
Its not weird at all to be interested in characters like Ursula. She is fun and interesting and I'm pretty sure most people are more interested in the villains than the heroes/heroines.
The Queen of Wonderland by Colleen Oakes is a pretty good retelling of the Queen of Hearts too. Not my favorite. Yes to Ella Enchanted! Hunted by Meagan Spooner as a Beauty and the Beast retelling was good too. I have Spinning Silver on hold. Fingers crossed because Uprooted was great!
Does anyone know of any sleeping beauty retellings? I've seen tons of Alice in wonderland, Cinderella and beauty and the beast retellings. But i never see any sleeping beauty
@@Bookables i actually have a copy of that! but I've heard mixed things so I've been scared to pick it up! Haha it's hard to find good sleeping beauty retellings for some reason... But maybe I'll finally pick it up and give it a shot regardless :)
ALittleReader this is a year later so I don’t know if you will see it, but I was unsure about Spindle Fire at first, but I ended up really enjoying it! Another good Sleeping Beauty retelling is Wide Awake Princess. The illustrations on the cover make it seem more child like and it isn’t as dark as other fairy tales that I like, but I read it in high school and it will always have a special place in my heart :) It’s a very good light read
@@Bookables yea she has to be stuck in one kingdom for a certain amount of time then gets to go back to her kingdom its a deal that was made. Like how Persephone has to live in the underworld for half the year at a time
I LOVE FAIRYTALE RETELLINGS YES YES YES
The lunar chronicles is one of my favourite series! LOVE HEARTLESS TOO
yes me as well!!
Same tho
I know Im quite off topic but do anybody know of a good website to stream newly released series online?

I really recommend Sea Witch! The setting is really interesting and I ended up liking it a lot more than To Kill a Kingdom.
oooh must read then!
Ella Enchanted was my favorite book as a kid, I have probably read it like 10 times 😂
me too!!!
That "Sea Witch" cover was fantastic! I would love to get my hands on a copy of that book
