tons of hand done art and animations, really great art direction, classic level design. the devs who made these were able to think in a way modern developers can’t. years of arcade expertise.
@hugops17 It's not. Its different. One is spacey. One is gothic/demony. Don't be stupid. It's not hard to use your brain to realize quality and taste are not the same thing.
I have always loved the cool death animations that Igarashi took to the next level. I loved every minute of Bloodstained as well; it was total Iga swagger on full display-though if you can play it on ANY platform other than Switch, I would recommend doing so. The Switch was still pretty rough when last I tried to play it.
I was so tempted to buy this collection when it shadow dropped. But today, I bought it and man was it worth it! This will be my first time playing the DS castlevania titles.
I played all three when they were originally released. If people that never played these games had any idea how great these games are, this collection would be a best seller.
Totally missed the Castlevania series on the DS. Now seems like the perfect time to dive into this great classic metroidvania. Thanks for the great review as always!
I initially started to watch this video thinking I was not really interested in the game but wanted to support the channel, and now this is in my wishlist. That backfired! Great review!
The original retail module copies for the DS were getting ridiculously rare and expensive in Germany in the last years. Unfortunately I supidly sold my original copies about 10 years ago for some quick bucks while being in college. I deeply regret that to this day. Im so happy for this shadow drop of this collection.
Reviews by SwitchUp are a valuable series and I'm thankful for its existance, even when the game isn't one I'm interested in, like this, someone else is and thats fantastic. Thank you SwitchUp and Mark in particular, your time and effort is much appreciated.
The review makes it sound like the three main games are interconnected like parts 1, 2, and 3, and that’s just not the case. They’re all in the Castlevania canon and overall narrative-they slot right in and tie into other Castlevania games-but they’re not really tied to each other, and can be played in any order. I don’t know where he got the idea that saying much about Dawn of Sorrow would spoil the other two (maybe that was just a joke), but they’re disconnected by several decades each in the timeline, and the release order was Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia, which is coincidentally in reverse chronological order.
Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia are my fav castlevania games together with Symphony of the Night. Circlet of the moon comes close but man these games are unreal. So happy this collection is happening
Nice to see another liking order of Ecclesia. Been playing through it for the first time. My close friend has the ds carts and always said he wished Ecclesia would have got more attention. He likes dawn the best of the 3 but has always said that Ecclesia and portrait are just as good in their own way in his opinion. Apart from a couple admittedly minor gripes I have to agree with him and you on Ecclesia. Sure the environments are repeated but with the various 100 plus enemy types to fight with the glyph system i guess that doesn’t bother me and all the bosses have been awesome in my opinion. Hopefully this collection gives these three games more love and gets Konami to see the value in making or contracting a 3rd party (like they’ve done with M2 for this port and haunted castle revisited) for a new entry in the franchise. If games like bloodstained the list of amazing metroidvanias on the indie scene haven’t then hopefully this collection of their da games does.
It absolutely is. Bloodstained is cool and all, but these games were some of the finest Metroidvania experiences for me back in the day, and made me a Castlevania fan. If you've never played these masterpieces, please do not sleep on this collection. You won't regret it!
@@pig6013 You don't HAVE to play the games in order, that's up to you, and the timeline jumps all over the place from game to game. but all of those Castlevanias are well worth playing, in my opinion, as well as their spiritual successor, the Bloodstained series.
All I want with this release is an option for split screen portrait mode. This would be one of the most accurate ways to present these games. Think of ikaruga having it's portrait mode option in order to represent the arcade orientation of the screen.
I can’t wait to buy this. These 3 games are some of my favourite games of all time and to hear the music again and play is absolutely wonderful. Thanks for the video about this it was cool!!
It's a lovely little collection, but I do wish they'd also included Castlevania Adventure: Rebirth so we could have had a full collection of 2D console Castlevania games on modern consoles.
@oviekpolugbo4227 We already have Requiem, SoTN and RoB together, though that is unfortunately not on Switch. But I don't think we have Chronicles, Dracula X Chronicles, Legends, or any of the 3d games in a collection
@@ridgenyan-botxv367 Requiem's only on Playstation. I reckon we'll get another Sotn release in the near future. Personally, I'd love a collection that includes every version with scaling options and improvements. Maybe a few extra modes for good measure. Even just a release of Requiem with the DXC remake and the original Sotn dub would be pretty ok.
@oviekpolugbo4227 Yeah, that'd be awesome. They've been doing a pretty good job bringing the games to modern formats with the various collections, but they're still not done yet. Guess we can only hope and wait until then.
I just bought the Anniversary Collection as it was recently on sale and was able to beat Castlevania I and II on NES over the weekend. On to Kid Dracula next. Can’t wait until I get to these games!
Order of Ecclesia è un vero capolavoro..lo consiglio a tutti! Anche Portait of Ruin merita molto, mentre Dawn of Sorrow è un buon gioco. Portate a casa 3 gioconi al prezzo di uno, un affare (io ho speso un capitale per gli originali DS)
Fantastic review Mark, yeah everything looks stunning as expected! The screen divisions don’t bother me one bit, replicates the original DS experience as elegantly as possible. SOOO tempted to pay full whack on this one!!
This is an amazing value. Just to let those know still curious or may not have played these in the past I’ve seen other sites say the games stories are only just under 10 hrs in length while that may be true if you rush or know what to do there is much more to this. Each game has a second mode if you go to collect all the souls or glyphs that will take time. I can’t speak for dawn and portrait but there is a boss rush mode in the menu of Ecclesia and according to my friend who owns the originals there is ng+ to each. He wasn’t sure about dawn and portrait but told me ng+ is essentially a hard mode in ecasia. As also mention in this video the bosses are just awesome and depending if you have or haven’t played before they may take a few tries to find the right setup to beat them. Plus I’m not sure about dawn and portrait but Ecclesia has the challenge of beating the bosses without being hit for those who want the extra challenge and the save state can be done at anytime even during bosses. So for those worried about the difficulty of the games there are plenty of options to help and tip online as well. Please to anyone interested in these and think they will enjoy these please support this collection the reviews are not exaggerating when they sale $25 is a steal for this if I had the extra I would pay extra for the physical too. Three lengthy games, a remake of a classic arcade port (which is really well done) art gallery, soundtrack player. Konami could have easily gotten away with trying to sell it at $50 or something considering the amount of content and features and how expensive the ds carts are. $25 is a no brained for those that have that extra and love Metroidvanias or just castlevania. Looking at the reception of bloodstained, hollow knight, blasphemous 1+2, aeterna noctis is another. Hell prince of Persia lost crown is awesome. So many metroidvanias today. Konami should definitely give a company a chance at a new castlevania. If it has a talented team who understands what makes these games and castlevania popular it could be awesome 2d or 3d (yes I said 3d ya never know.)
Posting another reminder here if you don’t want to spend full price on the Castlevania Dominus Collection, the Anniversary Collection is 80% off and the Advance Collection is 40% off, both back at lowest prices until September 10.
People kept on saying it was unlikely they would ever release these on Switch due to how the DS was set up, making it hard to port. I was so happy when they announced ! It was a complete surprise to me, and I instantly went and bought it. Been really enjoying it since. The advanced collection was fantastic too!
Oh my goodness… dawn of sorrows was what I played my first year of marriage! The memories are awesome! Can’t wait to pick this up… and 20 freaking dollars!!!! What a deal.
It is doubly dominating my back log as I decided to replay Aria of Sorrow on the previous collection! Really enjoying these ports. Gives me hope that other DS titles I figured lost on the system, may make returns.
I love how they went in reverse order of release. Really great decision to me, never got to finish order of ecclesia originally, and was hoping for a collection like this after the advance collection's release.
Definitely the best launch of a collection on the switch. Loved the first two releases but this one came out of nowhere and is extremely well done. Especially for the money. Easily the best value for a collection launch.
I'm half an hour into Dawn Of Sorrow, and I already know it's the BEST £18 I've spent on the Eshop in a LONG time! Haven't played it for nearly 20 years, but has the sound been re-mixed/mastered? Something sounds different...
I just grabbed it a few days ago. I never played any of these games as they are the only ones of the series I haven't got to play. I know of the characters from Castlevania HD so this is huge for me. 🥞
Haven't been as addicted to a game in a while as Dawn of Sorrow! I beat it in like 2008 originally on DS Lite so playing it like this has been great 4:25 imagine grinding for souls if this wasn't the case!
Enemies respawning is such a odd complaint you need them to respawn for grinding and item drops, soul drops, and glyps it would actually be awful if they didnt respawn
So in some games once you move past a room the enemies won’t instantly respawn they take a while, I did mention it wasn’t really a valid “complaint” just something that’s a pet peeve when navigating these games. Mark
@@SwitchUpYt I can understand that I don’t like that. It is an annoying thing. I guess I kinda just don’t mind it here in metroidvanias like this cause like I said it would make getting certain items and glyphs/souls more tedious in my opinion but I completely get it being a pet peeve. Looking forward to your next review
The respawning enemies are good for two reasons. 1. It provides incentive to plot out your route/ traverse the map more meticulously. 2. Can be fun to grind low drop rate souls/ power level xp
@@SwitchUpYt i unnderstand that but in these games you kinda need enemies to respawn to get souls in dawn or to get one of the coolest weapons in portrait of ruins which is the hewven sword most people run in and out of rooms to kill the rspawns for that reason
Hu Mark, great video. Great games. Can you tell me how is the map is implemented? I spent a lot of time looking at the map to navigate in Dawn of Sorrow on DS. Thanks.
I wish they would put the animated intro movies back into the actual games. Having them play on the game select screen is a great bit of presentation, but I'd like to be able to watch them without all the menu UI gubbins round the edges. Other than that, this is an amazing collection.
7:38 “there aren’t any voice actors”? Huh? There’s voice work in all of the ds games. Not in larger cutscenes, but all throughout gameplay and boss fights.
I'm so torn! 😕 On one hand, I can't stand Konami for all of thier abuse of employees and shady business practices. But on the other hand, I really, really love these games! What do I do? 😅
There are multiple different departments, teams, managers, etc.. So, I would take the claims of abuse with a grain of salt. I work for a fairly big company. If I suffered abuse from my managers, people in other parts of the company may not experience those same problems. But the media would report it as if all employees experienced what I have. That said, Konami's shady business practices are out of hand and good reason to protest. We just need to encourage people to stop buying DLC unless it's full content. No more paid skins on top of full priced games...
As much as I am a fan and I'm jumping from joy getting and playing these games, I can't help to wonder how and why not a single soul out there mentioned how the intro scenes aren't in full screen and they are blocked on the left side by the games menu, like some kind of preview and nothing more, it's bizarre and disappointing. I watched a lot of reviews and there is zero mentioning to this specific issue.
Agreed! I was told that if you purchase this collection on PC, there's a folder with the videos in them. No UI nonsense. I also detest how Johnathan constantly says "No problemo." There's a heartwarming scene where he realizes his father tried to protect him... followed by "No problemo." These are the two biggest issues I have so far. I don't even mind the typos, shich should also be fixed. I just detest so much the moron who kept in "No problemo."
I watched this to feed my confirmation bias more than anything else, since I bought it immediately after finding out about it. It was still a great and thorough review, though.
I'm thrilled that they surprised us with this collection but man I'm so tired of waiting for an official portable release for symphony of the night... Steam or Switch I don't care which at this point...
I had no intention whatsoever of adding another Castlevania collection for my backlog, but between this review and the Japanese eshop price equating to less than 15 quid, it'd be rude not to.
Who here looks at the galleries o listen to the music in they types of collections ? I have never cared about that, it’s always been about the games in the collection
4:56 You mixed so much up here. Dawn of Sorrow is the first release of these three games, not the third. Also glyphs are in Order of Ecclesia, not Dawn of Sorrow, and don’t use touch screen controls. What you were actually referring to was the magic seals in Dawn of Sorrow.
Here's our full Nintendo Switch review including docked and handheld overview as well as framerates to help you decide if you want to add this one to your collection! Let me know if you are picking this one up! Mark

I wish anyone but limited run was handling the physical versions
Castlevania Dominus is the greatest Konami collection on the Nintendo Switch; this value pack is unmatched!
I'm still upset that we haven't ever gotten a third Sorrows game or the LoS trilogy ported.
Awesome stuff just bought it on Series X since no achievements on Nintendo 🤦♂️
I remember in couldn’t put down aria of sorrow on the DS
I'm so torn! 😕 On one hand, I can't stand Konami for all of thier abuse of employees and shady business practices. But on the other hand, I really, really love these games! What do I do? 😅
Purchase them for the devs - they're not the bad guys :)
No more paid skins on top of full priced games...
so worth it!
PS5 since it has Symphony. Plus Portal makes it easy. All games in one place.
I love this collection, but we all know there is one important game missing.
Anyway, let's spend some money.
Yup - I mentioned that one have been playing it today on Playstation just to see if it holds up. It does. Mark
I can finally play Aria and then Dawn of Sorrow! I wish Symphony of the night escapes Sony's clutches.
I also detest how Johnathan constantly says "No problemo." There's a heartwarming scene where he realizes his father tried to protect him... followed by "No problemo."
These are the two biggest issues I have so far. I don't even mind the typos, shich should also be fixed. I just detest so much the moron who kept in "No problemo."
i can finally obtain all boss medals in OoE with the rewind feature 😆
Limited Run games will be releasing a physical version of this game on Nintendo Switch!!!
Did they happen to keep any of the multiplayer modes, like the boss rush in PoR?
Don't be scared move that value score to 20 you know you want too 😊, just do it !!
Who here looks at the galleries o listen to the music in they types of collections ? I have never cared about that, it’s always been about the games in the collection
Now we just need the Lord of Shadows duology on the switch
Yucky non canon god of war clone it was a blight on the series that abomination was ever made
@@LostHorizons0 The highest selling castlevania game is a blight on the series? Over a million people disagree with you
4:56 You mixed so much up here. Dawn of Sorrow is the first release of these three games, not the third. Also glyphs are in Order of Ecclesia, not Dawn of Sorrow, and don’t use touch screen controls. What you were actually referring to was the magic seals in Dawn of Sorrow.
When this goes on a deep sale, would it be considered black pudding instead of a saveloy?
LOL I hate black pudding so I can't condone it haha
@@SwitchUpYt Haha can't blame you there, I'm not a fan either!
Never played the originals so looking forward to sinking my teeth into this collection
Symphony of the night is on ps4/ps5 and Google play
Who cares this is a Nintendo channel we want it on switch not crappy mobile or tv tethered consoles
They made Haunted Castle GOOD. HOW?! :D
Now all they need is the Konami rebirth collection on the switch and I will be sooooooo happy
