  • This video profiles the caudex plant, Dioscorea elephantipes, sometimes called the elephant's foot plant. This South African succulent is known for its huge caudiciform structure with ridges and valleys and is thus highly sought after by collectors. In many cases, it is the gateway into the world of caudex plants.
    This video briefly explores a little about the plant itself, before providing some brief cultivation advice.

    Excellent info! I've got mine in a dormant stage waiting on new growth to put it in its new pot.

    Really interesting videos on this wonderful subject. Although there's thousands of channels dealing with your subject, l could only give you less than a handful of names that are informative and presented in an excellent way like yours. I really hope your channel grows, it deserves success.

    This has been a bucket list plant for me ever since I first encountered it. A former housemate was into exotic plants and succulents and he had a D elephantipes that had about an 8" base.
    I finally purchased one about a month and a half ago, decided to get one that was several years old since I just don't have the time(I'm nearly 50) or patience to grow from seed of from a tiny seedling, so it's probably one of the more expensive plant purchases I've ever made, but I'm so happy with it!
    It was shipped right as it was done with it's current growth season so it's not doing anything fun, but it's potted up in some well draining soil and in a spot where I see it every day so I can start watering as soon as I notice it coming out of dormancy

      Fantastic! Theyre fantastic plants, watching the caudex slowly increase in size is really very rewarding. Enjoy your new plant - hit me up if you run into any questions.

    Came here as a cactus and lithops fan, and now you’ve influenced me into caudex plants!

      Amazing! And I’ve barely even scratched the surface of the world of the caudex… so much more to come 😀

    Maaaan I wound up getting hooked up with like… 5-6 seeds as a freebie with a different order and I just couldn’t get them muddfuggazz to germinate for anything!
    Although I was still a very novice Cacti/Succulent grower as it was the better part of a decade ago now I bet I could swing it now.
    Currently have about ~25-30+ landrace Pachanoi seedlings from an internet homie from Ecuador whose been breeding a BEAUTIFUL, THICC, and TALLER than his own house by about a mile that he calls “Lumlumbambeño” and they’re doing soooo good.
    Stay weird out there.

      Nice! If you can grow Trichos from seed, you’d be able to handle these no problem. Just need to get them down when it’s getting cooler, rather than on heat.

    Hi again :) I have a question. Is it ok to use general (unspecialised) fertilizer on cacti and succulents? Do you fertilize yours, and if you do, how often in the growing season? Thank you in advance! 😊

      @AridZine  Місяць тому

      Generally speaking, fertilisers low in nitrogen are well suited to cacti and succulents. I sometimes use slow release ferts, sometimes water soluble ferts - sort of depends on where I’m keeping the plants and how much effort I’m investing in them. For seedlings or plants I’m trying to turbocharge their growth a little bit, I’ll use dilute fertiliser every second watering. Others might get one or two scoops of slow release fertiliser across the growing season.

    I have a plant similar to that, it has a little woody stump but it's smoother and kinda looks like the top or a turnip but the leaves are white-green and furry growing from a central stem that pops out the top of the stump and occasionally makes an orange flower. Any idea what it could be? I got it from my grandma's house after she died, it was growing in a pot hidden in the garden and it's never grown at all it just makes two leaves occasionally four on a stalk, then has an orange flower, then everything falls off and it starts again.

      Hard to know exactly without seeing a picture, but sounds like some species of Sinningia to me. Related to African violets.
