Thank you I just switched T8 flourescents to leds in my grow lights. Got a little confused with the odd number of wires but your video walked me through it.
Thanks so much guys. Great tutorial. I had bought some so called plug and play led 48" tubes which were touted to work in a standard fluorescent shop fixture, but each lamp took turns randomly staying on, then going off then coming back on again. It looked like some kind of haunted discotheque in my shop. We were very entertained at first, but you can't work like that. I yanked all the LEDs back out and started researching this when I ran across your video which was absolutely the clearest most concise explanation. I rewired my lamps like you did and the room is bright as day, without any unexpected night visits LOL. Thanks again.
You're welcome!

dirtbike5100 thanks for the link

This link points to single ended bulbs. but it looks like you are wireing both ends which is double end. I am confuse.
What is the power supply of this light 220 v or 110 v ?
This is just what I was looking for - everyone else is showing how to convert with the replacement of the tombstones on the end, and mine are just like the lights shown here. Thanks much!
I just did one of my fixtures in my shop using what I learned on your video. I tried running the LED's with the ballast wired in & they flickered badly. So I wired them as you showed straight off the 120v & they work great !
Now I just have 11 more fixtures to convert. I got my LED's at WM for $9.98 for 2 - 4' bulbs.
The old florescents are dim in comparison to the LED's. Thanks for your help !
WOW! That's a good price.
I learned something new...nice vid!
EXCELLENT and efficient video. Thank you!
Thank you very much! I'm glad it was helpful
This example shown here is known as a UL Type-B LED retrofit, where the driver components are integrated into the LED lamp. There are also Type-A (LED tubes operate off of fluorescent ballasts, also known as "plug & play") and Type-C (LED tubes operate off of remote LED drivers) retrofit options.
Is it more energy efficient to not have the ballast connected, or just left in place if it's an electronic ballast in the fixture? The LED bypasses the electronic ballast anyways? Does the bypassed ballast still consume wattage, that meters on the electric bill?
Nice. I have a couple fixtures with crispy ballasts. Looks like I can save the day and throw in some LEDs.
+Tony Vissoc Thanks Tony!
I don't know if anyone noticed but the boxes for bulbs he bought said "plug and play"....that means that he didn't have to remove the ballast. Lol. Bulbs that are not "plug and play" mean you need to remove the ballast to work! The good thing is if he ever buys LEDS in the future either will work and he is also saving money not double powering two different ballasts.
I'll bet the ballast removal will lower the cost of operation by quite a bit. Where there is heat, there is loss. I changed out my kitchen lights to LED's a few years back, and noticed the difference in the first bill.
JimsEquipmentShed Yeah Jim, it might be convenient to use led bulbs that don't need you to remove the ballast but it's pointless eh!
@@motoforlyfe it is called half assing it and there is a reason go all the way
Technically it does matter which wire. Live and neutral are not necessarily interchangeable. This particular wiring method only works for double ended LED tubes as well.
How about the dimmer can you install dimmers on them as well
3:31 goodfellas installing led bulbs!
If there are large caps in those converters be carefull even when its unpluged as caps keep charge , i know those lights need a high voltage to fire them up so there could be caps in there that could kill you. If there are no caps ignore its fine.
zGreat your video helped me convert my kitchen lights.
I noticed when he went to change the ends you stopped the video at that point the ends matter don't they?
I did this same thing with my lights and removed my ballast. I hooked up my lights and they got power going to them but they will not come on. I got a wall switch that is a combo box and what I mean by that it has a light switch in it and a outlet in it and it's grounded and then I ran wire from that combo switch box to the lights that I mounted in my shed. I got power going up to it and when I flick the switch on the wall the power will shut off and on so I know that's working but my lights don't come on. The only thing that I didn't do is the ground wire from the new wire that I ran up to the lights isn't hooked up. Someone told me that as long as the switch and outlet combo box is grounded that I didn't need to ground the lights, is this true and if it is true then I don't know what else to do. Like i said i got power up at the lights but the lights will not come on and I had the lights tested to make they're no defected and they work so I'm lost. Can anybody help, thank you. Thumbs up on this video. 👍
hola amigo que tal tengo muchas lampara de ese tipo pero quiero llegar a un inventario para decir así ya que esas lampara trabajan con balastro quiero convertirla a 12 voltios si me podrían ayudar como hacerla por favor
question: my case where the fluorescent tube fit have a starter switch (small tubular things) do i remove those ?
Yes
Nice job again - just wish we'd had LEDs when I was your age.
MalcOfLincoln They're pretty neat eh!
Clear as mud.
Should the tombstones be shunted or non shunted with those bulbs???
Does anyone know?
Doesn't look like they are answering comments.
I can't help but laugh a little, I have those exact ballast's and where I am, I have been converting T12's to T8's for the time being because the company doesn't want to spend the money on LED's. LOL
Thanks for sharing. :)
That's ridiculous, a LED conversion will take less time to perform than replacing the entire ballast, and the bulb cost is about the same as a new ballast!
Nice job! :) Jack
Jack R Thanks Jack!
1- the ballast tray cover has to be replaced, not only for cosmetic and reflecting, but there's wiring in there and it has to be closed. Otherwise it's an open junction box and is a NEC violation.
2- Note: these "double ended" LED tubes. Neutral one end, hot the other. That's why the shunted sockets worked.
You use non shunted sockets for single end tubes (where the hot is one pin and the neutral is the other pin) The sockets on the other end are just physical holders and require no electrical connection
davep6977 where is your code reference armchair electrician?
da fuk outta here dave! ballast not 'hot' anymore, don't need no cover ya stupit fock!
@@bucklee436 'Stupid' can easily be described as leaving parts off the reinstall that have value or leave a better end product. Put the cover back in place. It minimally keeps the wires secured, and the wire connections separate from the bulbs...in the off case that an LED bulb has to be replaced by a home owner at a future date.
Go another step and physically remove the ballast from the fixture - one screw holds it to the frame (usually) and the assembly is quite a bit lighter without it.
who da hell cares if its lighter? are u gonna fukn hold the thing while in operation?
No, just hold the effing thing while installing it overhead.
@@bucklee436 Because it makes for a cleaner job...and less confusion to those that service the unit in the future.
Yeah but then you need to dispose of it. Easier to just leave it.
I should get some. My garage is cold in the winter and the Fluorescents always buzz and he m and need to warm up...
rw3dog That's one of the nice things about these, no buzzing and no warmup time!
Two questions for ROADKING, nothing to do with those great LED conversions, No. 1 Why are you holding on to that old CRT computer monitor/TV there on top of the Chev. and No. 2 , when are you going to get going on the Chev . ?
I hook my camera up to the CRT when I film overhead shots so I can see what is in frame and what you guys are gonna see!! I can't do anything to the Chevy till we have a place to keep it!! If I fix it now it will get destroyed with all the work we do in the garage!! If we fix it we'll have to stop doing projects!!☺
Do the retrofitted LED Tubes run on 110 volt AC?
+Dennis Link Yes, the ones we got did. If you get a set make sure they do too!
If you are going to make a video like this, you should explain about shunted and non shunted. You can’t install single ended led tubes into shunted tombstones. This can blow the lights and possibly cause a fire.
4 tube florescent to led conversion: don't know what I did wrong but my one of my led tube burned out with smoke and the others were very dim. I figured I must have done something wrong. In the end I bought a new LED assembly.
what if you have 277 volt is it the same
Thanks
im sure this conversion would apply to the old style T12 lamps as some fixtures the old ones will have a starter on one end of the sockets as that will have to be bypassed for it to work. on Supermarket cases the lights will have many wires as the conversion may be difficult if the kits are designed for them if its a refrigerated or a freezer case they are designed for
thanks bro
Those are INSTANT ON!!!!
More good advice!!!
The Open Air Garage Thanks!
I removed 2 ballasts from a 4 bulb unit, re-wired as shown , replaced bulbs with LED BULBS, and does not work. what did I do wrong???
There are two types of LED tubes...'double ended' and 'single ended'. If you purchased the wrong tubes for your fixture...they will not work unless you also change the tube holders to shunted, or non-shunted respectfully. So, either switch to the other bulb types, or change your bulb holders.
Heloł, thank you 💡🎞🎬🎥👋
what is the watts on them led bulbs.
Various wattages depending on the manufacturer. Most 4' LED tubes range from 12-18 watts.
I'm confused. You hook (2 blue + 1 white), (1 red + 1 black) going to both ends of light.
Does this indicate you are using a 'Double-ended' LED light?
And are 'Double-ended' LEDs used only with 'shunted' tombstones and 'Single-ended' LEDs used only with 'non-shunted' tombstones? or vice-versa?
(note: the bulbs on Amazon warn only single-ended and require only non-shunted)
Thanks.
Thanks for asking, this is a great question! At the time this video was filmed, only double-ended LEDs were available, thus the original shunted tombstones were used. Had we been able to purchase and use single ended tubes, we would have had to retrofit the fixture with non-shunted tombstones. There are now SOME LEDS sold that are compatible with both configurations. I updated the Amazon link with an example. Hope this helps!
@@motoforlyfe , interesting that those LEDs you linked, can be BOTH single & double (take your pick). Even better the beam angle is enhanced at 240 or 300, than the older 120 angle. I wanted a better beam spread. Thanks for the updated link!
I have the exact same fixture. The bulbs from Home Depot require power to one side only. Won't work in this fixture.
Thanks for the tip!
Correct. However, you can purchase non-shunted bulb mounts...and then the bulbs will work.
Yinz from the burgh?
missed a few step
Why did you remove only one ballast, aren’t the LED’s work without the ballast?
Or, you can go to home depot and and pickup a 4 ft. T8/T12 17-Watt Cool White Linear LED that works off existing ballast. Just plug-in and go! For only 14.84 each
SJK The Mechanic Existing ballast uses more electricity and as they age they start buzzing.
At $14 each, those are more expensive bulbs. The ballasts use much more energy to run AND the ballasts will go bad.
Those are the many good reasons to bypass the ballasts altogether
I tried this, the new LED tubes came on for about 2 minutes, then went out, when I touched them they were very hot, I think theres more to the conversion than this.
+Cunning Cat Did you check to make sure that the leds were meant for the voltage you were running through them and that all your connections were right?
Just three leads black white and a bare ground which I didn't mess with, the tubes worked fine for a short time then two tubes partly went out followed by all 4 going out, when I removed them they were very hot which isn't like LED's got them from lowes
Probably because LEDs only need power on one end. They wire and work differently than regular florescent bulbs, but many videos dont explain that. You might have sent power through both ends of the bulb.
There are two types of LED tubes...'double ended' and 'single ended'. If you purchased the wrong type for your fixture...you will have to change one end of tube holder to shunted or non-shunted, or simply order the other tube type. Otherwise, you will have operating issues.
You can't rotate those "tombstone" type end caps.
Ya no problem buddy....that’ll be 90$!
You guys from Maine or something buddy?
I'm gonna guess Maryland.
Amazon.chi com. Still nice video Thanks.
I thought you could have left longer "service loops" coming off the old ballast, in case you ever wanted to use it again. You had plenty of wire. I'm just sayin.
sort of confusing... I thought the white was negative and red was hot or positive...
stephencarlsbad
These are ac not dc
Been alright but skipped actual wireing
Sounds like a South Jersey accent.
I'm thinkin' S.E. Pennsylvania ...
Hey
What's happened to Mike ??
fairlane2020 He was probably at work when we filmed this video!
Tell mike he needs to make a special guest appearance every now and again 😂
+fairlane2020 watch some of my other videos, he does
Why not just do the right thing and unscrew two screws and get rid of a potentially leaky ballast. Eliminate all that heavy weight on your light fixture. Make a true upgrade.
not bad video as far as info. But the person with video recorder...I say slow down, maybe redo as you make my cat dizzy. I know you are amateurs but think ''what is my final product?? good lukk
I got sea sick watching the camera action.
easier way to do this....go to Walmart by LED Tubes take out T-12 or T-8 and install the LED tubes...no wiring needed.
...if you have the electronic ballast, reg ballast needs to be bypassed.
Please do a little research on image stabilization. Some of us cannot watch your video because of it.
Way to much needless chatter
This is a horrible video. You did not slow down and explain what you did with the wires. I have rewinds 3 times and you just didn’t show your work. Moving in to the next video.
I used to lose points in math class for not showing my work.
Black to red, white to two blues. Ezpz pusspuss
About the worst delivery I've ever seen. "All steps" ! Picks up a bunch of blue red white and black wires cuts the lot and then they or some or maybe one colour to another appear joined in some way without any step by step explanation and visual. It's a before and after with the actual work left to imagination. The rest you have to try and understand from the trio bantering together. OK maybe for electricians but the idea is to make you able to do it yourself. Thank you tube that there are other vids to watch
Not a good video.
