Another thing about Slingfin tents that is unique compared to other manufacturers is that their rainfly’s are 100% coated with silicone, rather than one side being sil coated and the other side polyurethane. Polyurethane coated tents hydrolyze and break down over time, and get that “old tent smell”, even with little to no use. Silicone is an inert element that doesn’t change over time. Also a 100% silicone coated fly performs similarly to a poly fly when wet.
You should also check out their Portal 2 tent. For 5 more ounces you get way more livable space and probably 2-3x the strength in bad weather.

$475 for a not very spacious 10d Nylon tent. And you have to pay $30 extra for it to be waterproof. They make great tents, buy I don't see how you can justify these prices.
@@comounrayo it’s no different in price than Nemo is offering for some of their Osmo Elite tents, and Slingfin’s designs are a million times more stormworthy than the Nemo models are.

i love my slingfins. Nobody has as much versatility in their tent range. and outside of hilleberg, they have the best nylon and coatings out there. i chose the portal 1 over this tent for footprint size and wanted a free standing. between the portal 1 and splitwing i can cover all bases for any trip.
The Portal 1 looks awesome! Seen it used from some Hayduke hikers where the freestanding definitely would be a benefit.

The reason no one is talking about Slingfin tents is because no one carries it! Which in turn makes finding more real-world reviews, proper discounts and second-hand supply harder. For its price point and scarcity, I would rather get a tent from a bigger distributor that in turn comes with the untold benefits over this tent like something from Big Agnes or Nemo from REI. Even if its price is similar to those tents you can get those tents at a place like REI with their usual discount coupons and ease of returns. Whereas Slingfin tents I'm only seeing on their site for that MSRP price and not much elsewhere.
I definitely respect that perspective as a consumer.

Bit steep for a tent like that. For a little over $100 more you can go with a dcf shelter. Not a lot of benefits I am seeing here overall. However, the design is well thought out and I appreciate that. I would consider a tent like this if the price was in the $400s. Thanks for the video.
The x-mid 1 pro is only about $45 USD more.
Woven floor version, full DCF is more.

Does your tent keep you dry when it's raining? Have you had to fix any leaks? The floor material seems susceptible to punctures & the hydrostatic head rating is unacceptably low.
@@azclaimjumper they “updated” this tent since I bought mine and they changed fabric. Mine is far more waterproof and burly, I’ve had it in gnarly weather and no issues with wetting out at all.
@@Jswiss35 I bought a Hilleberg Enan in Marcy 2020, a couple months AFTER they changed the floor material from a 50D double coated floor to the same exact floor material as 1-person 4-season Akto tent with a 70D Triple coated floor & the price remain unchanged @$680. The Enan is now priced at $785. I'm thinking in another couple years my used Enan will be worth more than what I paid

I think Slingfin make some nice designs with a lot of deep thought put into them. Tim at Slingfin is also super responsive and takes on customer feedback ( had some great design discussion with him). I think this one is a bit narrow for two if I'm honest and for UK use we really need a polyester wall for the first few inches otherwise it's just too breezy for European climates, but its nice all the same. A

Nice review. I’ve been running a Slingfin Portal 2 since 2019 for all my backpacking and canoe trips. Amazing stability in high wind.
Fidly, heavy, and expensive I think. You can get a BA copper spur hv ul2 for$370, or the long or bikepacking version for 400. Lighter, depending on your configuration, cheaper, well known, free standing, rock solid in in weather, etc.

Wish you had reviewed the Portal 2. I don’t know why anyone would buy the 2-Lite over the Portal 2 if they are picking Slingfin.
The 2Lite has always been a really intriguing tent to me because of its design. I love that it takes queues from the Sierra designs clip flashlight , which the Slingfin owner was part of developing.
I’d love to test the portal too!

I agree and disagree. Big Agnes Copper Spur UL 2 is $529 and Nemo Hornet Elite is $650! It’s within the competition for similar materials and space.

After several rainy camps in a row, I've become quite soured on inner-first pitching tents with mesh bodies. That's the main reason that I shied away from the 2Lite; it's the one thing I dislike.
Except for that, they are very well made tents that are user friendly and sturdy... as long as you aren't pitching them in heavy rain.
If I’m taking a non-Trecking pole tent, I want it to basically be free standing, otherwise, why carry the extra weight? Nice tent though
Sounds cool, esp the gyu line feature. I'm just over nylon in wet weather and short tubs.

Weird that the opening flap of vent faces the wrong way if you go foot into the wind.

Nifty lookin tent. Seems like they have some good versatility in line with TT. Also seems like it takes a little longer to put together and it's a bummer they used nylon for the water retention.
I have this tent and it is a sil/sil coated nylon rainfly. It does not retain water or sag like the rainfly on my big agnus tent. That was a selling point for me
Very interesting tent! I like the versatility of the trekking poles as an option.
It's kinda like the entry level camping tents made by Vango like the Banshee, except made from lightweight materials. At that price point though there's better options.
This tent was inspired by the very classic, Sierra Designs Clip Flashlight. The founder of Slingfin actually worked for Sierra Designs and Mountain Hardwear. There’s a lot of smart engineering and design coming from this brand.
Great review. Slingfin does seem to me like they have really good products, however I do wish that all Singfin tents had the brown/green color options. The florescent orange color scheme isn't something that is very appealing to me, especially while trying to stealth camp.
We would love to be able to offer more tents in the green/brown, and believe me, we've had lots of requests! Right now we're still too small to offer multiple colors in all our styles- our factory minimums are too high for that. Someday, hopefully!
If you had to choose would you take this one or the Ampex 2P. They seem very similar to me
Ah great question. overall, I’d lean to the Slingfin. As a solo tent, Slingfin. As a tent I’d likely share with another human or dog, ampex. I like the ampex features for storage and symmetrical floor. But I’d have more faith in full on weather performance from the Slingfin.
I’m interested in the Portal 2 but really really interested in the Indus 2 because a long lasting durable tent would be cool to share with my partner. Wondering if it would get too hot out here in California during summer tho
I don’t have experience with the Indus, but it looks, on paper, to be a rad option. Probably a bit warm for a summer tent, but reach out to them and ask. Tim is super helpful.
This is a very interesting tent. I’m liking what I see. I wouldn’t use this on long-distance trips where I’d be gram counting, but shorter weekend trips this would be a great option. Loving that integrated zipper repair thing.
I've never seen any other brand put additional zipper pulls into the zipper for a repair like that. Super smart.
That is a cool tent. The trekking pole conversion is a nice feature. The only thing I noticed is a huge gap between the headend poles and the inner mesh. The could have included a clip(similar to the Nemo Hornet) to pull the inner mesh towards the pole/rainfly and gain more internal space.
I had thought that too, and wonder how much difference it would make. I guess a little more elbow room would be nice. Thanks man!
the bendy front poles at first glace look flimsy and problematic. is there ant advantage to them being like this.?

It looks like a good tent but too long to setup for hiking. I wouldn’t try to set one up in the dark for sure.
Having set it up in the dark, on slick rock, it really wasn't bad at all. It goes up quickly and straight forward. 😁

I like the idea of a trekking pole conversion option - it would be interesting to see how other manufacturers might adapt this.

Yes, I didn’t mention that, but the struts could easily get lost. I just enjoy that Slingfin works outside the box a bit for their designs.

I didn’t see the ability to do that as the fly attaches to the stakes at all the corners.
Good video but this tent makes no sense at that price point. I can see why no one is talking about it. You could get stronger and lighter tent materials for similar money.
Would you say the same about the Copper Spur, tiger wall, strato UL, dragonfly Osmo, hornet? All have similar fabrics and price points. I just don’t really agree with it not making any sense. A tent doesn’t need to be dyneema to make sense. 🤷🏻♂️
@@BackcountryExposure Unless someone needs a freestanding tent or they're on sale for closer to $400, I wouldn't recommend any of those. A tent doesn't have to be DCF to make sense but only if you're saving a lot of money. I'm not a DCF fanboy but for tents specifically, it's a better material in almost every way (not packability). I guess my issue is with the drastic increase in the price of nylon and polyester tents. There used to be a much bigger disparity between them and DCF options. DCF is something like 4x the cost of silynylon or silpoly yet the tent price is only ~30% more.
@@jeffreypalmer4053I recently listened to a podcast with Zpacks. When asked if they considered making a more budget friendly nylon/poly version of their tents. He said they didn’t because the majority of their manufacturing cost was labor.
Even though the material is 1/3 the cost, the end product wouldn’t cost enough less to justify. He also pointed out that they are US made, and don’t have a huge profit margin. The companies that manufacture overseas mark up their products to fit the market.

Yowza! How bout when you add in the cost of trekking poles? I like to consider that when it comes to a trekking pole tent. If I don't already have trekking poles, there's additional cost for those.

I already pay that price to live in a place i dont have to pitch. Jesus these damn things are expensive
Hmmm for $500, 2 lbs 14 oz (not lightweight) and not seam sealed. Can't believe these aren't flying off the shelves lol. So many better options for your money on the market. Stop marketing crap that you would never buy or use.
You can get it seam sealed, and yes, 3 pounds is absolutely lightweight. This tent is far from crap.
Quick clarification here- it does come seam sealed at $505. Non sealed is $475, and 2lb 14oz is the packed weight, rather than the trail weight, which includes a full complement of stakes and guylines, more than most tents in this category come with. Keep in mind that this isn't meant to compete with single wall DCF tents (for which you also need to carry trekking poles, which aren't included in the weight, of course). It's a full double wall tent with more livability and wind resistance than freestanding or semi-freestanding tents at this weight. It's all about striking the right balance! It might not be the right combination for everyone, but for some people it's just the ticket!
nobody is really talking about this tent because it is a TERRIBLE design for a tent. its kind of taking a few pages out of Henry Shires Tarptent designs and is really nothing new. just a badly designed tent unless you are only going to be using it in pristine weather conditions. this tent design cannot stand up to much wind and will collapse under any snow or really heavy hail/rain. On top of all that, it is SUPER OVERPRICED. Not sure how much they had to pay you or give you free product to advertise their product, but SHAME on you for pushing such a terribly designed tent as if it were some awesome piece of gear. there is no way I could trust anything you say in your other videos since its obvious that you are just shilling for this company and not giving a honest and unbiased review on this piece of gear.....
