Being in the military I kind of learned to not get attached to anything. I don’t hold value in any material object and will be downsizing to a duffle bag and a backpack before my test run in October.
That's the smart move. Clearly, Ace has forgotten how to lighten his load. And all that sentimental crap he has, it should all be carted down to the local Goodwill store. Maybe his sister can talk some sense into him. E.g., "Get all this crap out of my garage by next week, or I'm calling those 800 junk people to come haul it away, and I'm sending the bill to you!"
I went to Mexico City for a week. I took too many clothes and a backpack, left the coat, the vest there..too much stuff, most important things, Phone, cash, credit card, passport.
Most of my past was lost during one of 24 years of military moves. I don’t have any memorabilia from my childhood. Makes the move overseas easy. Between military and a corporate career I’ve spent over 20 years abroad. Looking forward to the Philippines.
So will I later this summer , im sure he is having some heart aches , some things a man just has a hard challenge walking away from even knowing it isnt going to be forever, it will be a true challenge if he can pull it off but either way the coin falls he will win and besides he can always find his way back , Enjoy your vacation or staycation my Friend and save me a few ladies you cant have them all 😆 but you sure can try to
Ace I have heard a friend of mine who is 75 and a full time world traveler say to own your stuff and never let your stuff own you. That being said I am slowly getting rid of things that are of sentimental value. If I have not used it in two years and it is not something that my kids want I either discard or donate to Catholic charity. I keep dwindling down my collection of everything from A to Z and am getting close to where I need to be. You can do it !!!!!!
I had the same sentimental junk problem. My advice move on from your past and just throw it away - or take a picture of each thing then throw it away if you are having trouble letting it go. I'm living in SEA until I die. YMMV.
Well that makes perfect sense. As you've stated many times your children in the States are now adults and have launched on their own...however your daughter in the Philippines is still elementary school age. Duty calls you back to the PI, understood, I'd head back there too as that's the smartest, and by far the cheapest plan for #1 single bachelor type guy to execute with young daughter in the Philippines to spend time with for sure . Congrats on moving to Angeles! I was there TDY back in the 1990s and it's definitely unlike anyplace in the USA...you're 100% correct about that
All that stuff in those totes is probably unnecessary so you should give it away. I had stuff like that in the US when I moved over seas in my Dads house. I was unable to return when Dad died. My stuff was disposed of. I know its hard to let go. As time passes you will let your few belongings left in the US go. I live in Panama now. It would not be practical for me to go back to the US now. Things have changed so much. I don't even make enough money now to support myself in the US. Its better that I stay in Panama where I can at least afford to support myself. I will use the Panamanian health care system when I get older and infirm. I have already been in Panama for going on 15 years.
@@bigjohnson7415 I havent been to asia in the last 25 years. In Panama it can be expensive depending on how you like to live. If you can adapt and live like a Panamanian you can live very cheap. If you can learn to live simply you can live alone for 1000 dollars per month out in the province. You have to know what you are doing and be flexible and learn to live with the basics. You have to learn to depend on your self. Not to depend on a girl friend to do things for you. Woman in Panama will use you if you permit it. They want to keep you ignorant so it is easier to extract money from you. Learn to live alone first. Then find a girl friend after you learn the ropes. Its no different than living in Asia.
Isn't knick knack stuff considered clutter? I thought those boxes were going to be filled with SnapOn tools, heirlooms or expensive items. Its just going to turn into a problem for whoever is storing unless you made a deal it's only for 6 or 12 months. Then you will either remove or they can throw away
The only thing I want to store is a valuable comic book collection that stretches from the 50s to the mid-90s. My collection was valued at over $500k in 2010. I used to buy at least 4 copies of number ones. I inherited my cousin’s collection from the 50s-60s when he passed away during the Vietnam War. He had an incredible collection.

Try to find a cheap small storage unit to put your stuff in. Set up auto payments on your CC. I did that for a while but the only problem is they kept raising my rates! But that's the cost of keeping old junk. I finally let it all go when I moved to the Phils full time. It feels great not having that burden anymore.
