when you watch this movie, you can't help but look into Elizabeth's eyes. What she's trying to say and how she's feeling is in her eyes. A brilliant performance. I'll definitely look out for her in upcoming movies.
This is by far the most heart-breaking movie I've ever seen and I would dare to say the best performance of an actress I've ever seen too. Elizabeth Olsen deserves an Oscar for this performance and even that wouldn't be enough of an award. genuinely
I know I'm really late to this movie but fucking hell this movie pissed me off to the core (SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT) I SEE what this movie was going for, and I really want to like it, I really do. It has everything I usually love: a slow burn, complex characters, and I love how interesting cults are (considering the amount of movies and docu's ive seen on the topic.) But the execution of this movie was dreadful. Nothing seemed to have any motive, I watched nearly 2 hours of this and I still don't understand any of the motivations behind the cult, behind the main character, behind the cult leader, behind the rape. I don't mind when movies are vague but when it's so blurred to the point where it seems like there is no beggining, middle or end it just becomes events which are just happening with no intent. And the biggest problem I had with the movie was the fact that the main character never ever said what she was experiencing to the sister, it was something which the writers were like "its coming, its coming, its going to happen" and it never does. NEVER. And the worst part is that I UNDERSTAND why they did it, I get that they wanted to have the main character seem illogical and confused, it just doesn't work. They want to make the cult seem terrifying and awful, yet at the same time don't want us to relate with any of the characters? It's muddled and doesn't give off any strong emotions, which you NEED to have in a slow burn, otherwise it's no longer a slow burn which pays off, it's just boring. I'm sure some will like it, but nothing clicked with me. Huge dissapointment :/
I just watched it last night after wanting to watch it for the longest time and I agree. I was disappointed, I wanted to like it because I love cult films but I disliked it so much. The character's actions, specifically Martha's pissed me off. And the film seemed, to me, like there was no beginning and no end, as if the movie started and ended in the middle of the story. This film could have been so much better.
@I drink your milkshake are you slow? i am referring to the open ending that leaves viewers confused as to what actually happened, thus blaming the ending of the movie for being bad.
SPOILERS. Had to rewatch the last 3 minutes twice. She sees Patrick on the other side of the lake, and a minute later sees her brother in law exit the vehicle and get in another car, while still talking to her sister? I'm guessing that's the director showing us that she's completely disintegrated, disconnected, and delusional. And is going to stay that way for a while.
That wasn’t the brother in law getting out of the car. That was the same guy who she saw on by the lake. He was outside of the car and came from off screen and got in the car behind them.
@@richbynature9127 i understand after the first watch. The cult member that watched her over the lake followed her in a car. After that point, its up to you to decipher what happened. Some will love this ambiguous ending, some will hate it. What brought you to this film? Just curious. In my case, it was WandaVision
@@richbynature9127 I originally thought that the cult came to kill the fam and take Marcy … like they where gonna hit them with the car and take her that’s what I got from the end ?
I didn’t like the ending. I needed to know. I hate movies like that that leave you hanging so intensely. Ugh.... did the cult come get her or did they not? The fact that the sister and brother in law saw the guy at the end get out of the car makes me think they really did come for her.
It's just an open ending where you get the chance to speculate what happened yourself that's all, if you want to view it as the cult going for her or not, it's all up to you
Watching What the Flick now sort of makes me miss living in the US. When I could actually go out and see a lot of the movies they review (except for the ultra limited release ones).
That song that he's playing on the guitar - "Marcy's Song" - is as far as I know a song written by Jackson C. Frank. But he's not that known. So now I wonder if that song is a much more popluar song written by somebody else.
During the film do youg uys remember the call when she's on both ends with her two selves one from the future and one from the past talking to eachother.
This was a good one. I just do not understand why Martha had such a hard time telling her sister what she's been through. Her sister was trying to help her. Nevertheless, this was a great movie. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
If you've ever been in a cult you might understand. Let me explain, Martha's sister doesn't know the circumstances around the cult. Martha still holds on to the belief system of the cult to a certain extent (although she left) and still can't trust her sister fully. It is almost like stockholm syndrome. Martha may use certain language that is only used by the cult trying to explain to her sister certain things like the structure, etc. which would only lead to more questions. If you've ever been in that situation it is annoying to try to explain everything to a complete novice who you don't trust completely and even if the trust is there it is still annoying.
I'll bet you any money this wont be in my cinema.. if i want to watch it, i could travel 30 miles to a city, listen to all the good reviews and have wait for dvd (hearing way too much about the movie to enjoy it) or find a torrent of it.
And now 9 year's later Elizabeth Olsen is one of the greatest actresses in the world and I can't wait to see what she's gonna do next
I am certain that she is gonna win multiple Oscars in her career. She is too good.
when you watch this movie, you can't help but look into Elizabeth's eyes. What she's trying to say and how she's feeling is in her eyes. A brilliant performance. I'll definitely look out for her in upcoming movies.
Now shes one of the finest actresses today. Her evolution has been crazy.
This is by far the most heart-breaking movie I've ever seen and I would dare to say the best performance of an actress I've ever seen too. Elizabeth Olsen deserves an Oscar for this performance and even that wouldn't be enough of an award. genuinely
6 years later, Elizabeth Olsen is legit
3 years later, she's mainstream
@@king691042 years later she's an emmy nominated actress and amongst the most popular ones. Gonna hit like crack when she finally wins the Oscar!

in summary: the move sucks
@@f1rststring I agree, there should have been a beginning and end .
agree with y’all
Moral of the story: you can check out anytime you like but you can never leave.
I thought it was great, and it's a shame that Elizabeth will most likely not be nominated for that Oscar, but damn that was a great debut.
worst movie ending in the world.. makes the movie not worth watching if you ask me. (just watched it... feels pain* )
Well I just a watched it and tbh I think the ending was perfect for the film . It's not an easy one to swallow but it makes you think .
Agree. Very bad ending. Not sure what truly happened and I don’t like that....

I think the end can be interpreted in several ways. That's how I got it.
This movie was very involving throughout. Excellent performances and direction.
9 years ago. Reviews are usually so much less phoney now. Thank goodness.
damn right
What more would you expect from a channel presented by The Young Turks?
I don't know if the ending was bad or good, because there was no ending!
Actually, all of the women used the name Marlene when answering the phone and it didn't really sound like her on the other end.
Good review. They get it. They're articulate.
This movie was so so great
Remember when this was released and was excited to learn there was another Olsen lol
im sorry, but if ben doesn't see the movie, he doesn't need to be in the review.

Review Lucky Mckee's "The Woman"! It's another film out of Sundance. I would love to see everyone's reaction.
I agree a little on the former but totally disagree on the latter.

What's the movie's name again? Martha Marcy May Mankiewicz?
this was a movie i have a hard time getting into
Is the movie as long as the title?

"Anxious" means nervous or scared. Just a heads up ^_^
I'd like to see a movie about jim jones
@quaxk maybe you should watch it first?
Looks good. Also looks aggravating, which, for me, is annoying. NetFlix.
What the fuck Ben, you've never seen the movie!!!
*sigh*, yet another mind fuck "is this character insane or is this really happening?" film, we've seen it a million times, so uncreative
Needs more robots and explosions. Less hipster shit.
Her hair looks strange.
