Adaptive battery is kind of dumb in my phone because my work time keeps changing and I feel it gets confused when to charge and when to stop charging. My charging pattern is also un-predictable
I use a timer when charging my phone. For example, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour charging. This is to prevent overcharging and to stay between 40-80%. Also does not use fast charging. I think this has allowed me to still use my Google Nexus 6P (bought in 2017) every day and the battery is still OK! I'm planning to buy a new one on Black Friday this year though...😀
On my Note 9 I use tasker to detect when battery is at 85% to send a signal trough alexa to my smart socket to cut off power. One hour before waking up in the morning the socket is programmed to turn on again to get the battery back on 85%. I'm on android 8.1. After more than 600 charging cycles the battery is 92.5% capacity. I use wireless charging with only 400mh current. Slow but is ok for overnight charging.
pro tip for nerds: If you still have some old cpu heatsink laying around, you can use it to keep your phone cool while charging it . All you have to do is: 1) remove the heatsink fan. 2 ) Put the heatsink up side down. 3) put you phone on the top of the heat sink (contact surface) while charging it The passive cooling is good enough to keep your phone cool while charging it.
A heatsink is just a piece of metal. It is has only a small flat area big enough to mate with the processor but not a pocket computer, which is also enclosed in non-conductive plastic. You can get the same effect by putting the pocket phone on any other object made of metal.
I did an experiment my iPhone 13 Pro Max, I charged it between 40% and 80%, I had it since Nov 2021, right now the battery health is at 94%. I say there is truth to this.
i used my iphone 14 charging it like that most of the time and after a year im at 94%. and i use my phone a lot. i saw people with 1 year old iphones that dropped to like 80 85 after a year
seeing an XDA vid which includes apple is weird to me. Saying apple have got better on repairability is inacurate, IMHO. To change that battery, you have to swap the bms or recode the new one to match that one, otherwise you get errors. On the newest Iphones, even the back glass housing is code matched to the motherboard - very bad for repairability!

Only improvement woukd be to give a guide on the average battery replacement costs for a typical smartphone, so just use 2 most popular brands as a reference as more manufacturers are now supporting software for much longer and people are keeping their devices longer, this will be an important thing to factor in
I'm even more confused. I have questions. I have an S23+ w/ One UI 6.1 1 and 100% battery health. Is it safe to charge my battery overnight with 30% left in the tank from 2300 to 0600 using a compatible 3rd-party 67w fast charger? Or... Using the same charger with only 20% left and charge from 0500 considering the battery capacity of the phone and the speed of the charging before I leave for work at 0730?
Big Chinese brands like Vivo or Oppo do come a long way with their fast charging technology.. having the convenience of a fast charge but also the safety it includes to keep it 100% all night..
I can guarantee their batteries are junk and degrade way faster. That's why their in their EVs are shit and also most like sabotaged Samsung Note7 batteries.

I honestly don’t care about charging time. I charge when I’m sleeping. And my 16 pro max is getting like 16 hours of screen on time on one charge. Slower charging is better for battery health.
some phones have battery bypass feature that if you plug the phone while gaming. it will not charge the battery, and will directly power your phone from the plug. and in return, your phone heats less and no stress from your battery. my Samsung has that feature.
You shouldn't be too worried about your battery health. My battery lasted four years, and the convenience of not following all of those tips will always outweigh the replacement cost. Most of the batteries will last at least 2 years even with aggressive use. It was just 20$ to replace the battery on my phone, and giving 20$ to keep my phone working perfectly is a no-brainer. 20$ every 4 years to not care about how you are charging. Only thing worth mentioning is the percentage you keep your phone battery at for long periods of time. Deep discharge will most likely kill your battery and most of the times it is easily preventable.
People bought cheap and nasty imported batteries, and their phones had issues. Of course, they blamed OEMs. So, obviously, smartphone makers wanted to kill that off as soon as possible. Other reasons as well.

@@asandax6 That is not their business. Apple and Google do not make batteries, and why would they want to start? It is unprofitable. They currently order enough for their new devices with a small surplus just in case and a few for replacements after 1-2 years. So battery makers should make quality batteries rather than go for the lowest denominator of cheap and nasty. But sadly, they don't, so people buy those that can damage their phones, degrade rapidly, and not communicate with the software. I recommend getting replaced at an authorised centre and building the cost into your purchase.

Very informative video but I don't get peoples obsession with the overnight charging. I know people are busy with their life to make a living (I myself a general practitioner, will be a doctor next year), but now even the 150$ phones come with 33w charging support that also includes the charging brick. It only takes 10-15 minutes to juiced up your device for the rest of the day. I only charge my phone in the morning while I'm brushing my teeth then take a quick breakfast. These few tasks cost me average 20 Mins and meanwhile by boy is 80% (more or less) charged.
And me deliberately using a 5w charging brick that charges my 5000mah battery from 20% to 80% in about 4hrs + smart socket timer + software protection up to 85% max charge.
You forget charge/discharge cycle... Which is kinda important when dealing with batteries Yes you did mention charge cycle, but please elaborate more on that and why a 1600 charge cycle matters

Only recent NiMH cells keep their charge in storage. In the past they would self discharge in a month or two. There are now smart chargers like Opus that better detect when the cell is full, ramps down the current, and avoids heating it up. You can also select the peak (pulsed) current. Dumb Varta chargers heated the cells so much that the glue of the label melted and made the cell fatter (they are already slightly bigger and not slippery).

Biggest benefits for wireless charging are firstly convenience: when i go to bed i just pop the phone on the charger no fiddling with plugs. And when i get in my car I drop the phone on the cars built in wireless charger. Again no fiddling with plugs getting into and out of the car. Secondly the less number of times you are plugging that usb plug in the lower the chance of damaging it. I have had two phones in our family with damaged usb ports

99% of the time I use old slow chargers on modern phones. But I do charge to 100% always overnight, but usually every 2 days. I swap phones every week or two OnePlus 12 and Pixel 8 Pro.
Guys it's easy, don't stress about battery health, avoid the extremes, prefer 2-3 small charges during the day and after 2 years of use start considering replacing the battery. Don't charge it overnight and for the love of Lithium don't charge it while leaving it under a pillow..
There's no such option yet in Pixel devices. There's talk that Android 15 will get an 80% limit option. Until then you can use an app or something that alerts you when the charge level reaches 80%.
Most people with an average of 2-3 hours SOT or even less charge 80% as that will easily be enough for your daily needs. By doing this, you double the life cycles of your battery, so for example, on an iPhone, 500 cycles until 80% health becomes 1000 cycles. It seems like a no-brainer. Also, do not charge on a non-conductive surface like a bed. I put mine on a battery-operated fan, and charging is faster; the phone stays cool, and this reduces wear even further. Only use wireless charging and superfast charging as they were meant. Wireless charging is for small top-ups during the day, and superfast charging is for quick top-ups only. If you have money and do not need to reduce the running costs, use and abuse it as you like and buy a new battery when required, or a new phone if that is your thing.

I love my Oppo with the fast charge, easily has the best battery life and charging of any phone I have ever had and that includes both other androids and iphones. Also has the least bloatware too.
So my phone supports 100w charging and the 100W charger comes bundled with it, but I charge my phone with an 80W one that my wife has instead. I guess this will also somehow help in keeping it cooler I guess.
If you are charging for 20% to 80% you are wasting 40% power of your battery. Modern phones stop or trickle charge your battery after reaching to 100%. So without worry you must charge your battery to 100%. This will increase your battery life. Rest are all myths. Which is beneficial to mobile manufacturers.
and i still will only charge my phone with a 5v 1a charger. Its better for the battery, the slower you can charge a battery the longer it will last. Yes it takes 4 hours to charge but i only ever need to charge it when i go to bed, my battery will last a full day, even with some heavy use and i will still have 30-35% battery left at the end of the day
I had a redmi note 3 with 4000mah battery its backup got so bad in just 2.5 years that I had to charge thrice a day then I switched to redmi k20 pro with 4000 mah battery but rarely charged it above 80 % and now 5 years later its battery still lasts me a day
Maybe if you have magsafe and the wireless puck but that just makes the phone wired but with extra steps that reduce charging efficiency and you might as well just plug in the USB cable.
Question.... Does recent smartphones have the ability to stop current from the charger from reaching the Batteries on Demand or when they're fully charged.... This is besides gaming phones which use Bypass Charging.....
All modern smartphones take just as much power from the charger (power adapter) as they need. It is the phone which determines the amount of current that is drawn from the charger. It must be as only the phone "knows" how much current the battery can accept for charging and how much current the rest of the phone (CPU, display etc.) needs. Chargers just deliver a certain voltage, 5 Volts or more if the phone requests that and the charger can deliver that. The current is always determined by the phone. So yes, the smartphone decides how much current is needed and will stop the current if it doesn't need it anymore.
Dumb battery things only happened on Apple phone. Even my Xperia xz from 2017 still had it's i original battery and run normally, while my iphone 7 for 3 battery replacement. Sill a mystery, iphone has to the slowest charging time and bunch of charging crap and still had the worst battery life.

Silcone carbon battery do use lithium btw. Cathode is lithium while Anode is made from Silcone carbon in your case. Traditionally the anode is made from nickal magnese cobalt.

I played COD Warzone and already replaced battery on S23U. Not a big deal, its not expansive as a screen replacement! Ill chamge it again in 1-2 years. I keep it charging while i sleep, i work in 3 shifts so its very unpredictable.
That's not going to help battery health. This video is about best practices to keep your battery at good health so it doesn't need to be replaced. Be it easily or not.
stop babying the device and charge it like everyone else. you'll be changing phone every few years anyway and modern batteries is good enough for this.

If you're regularly gaming plugged in then it makes sense to cap at 80%. Many gaming phones also have a bypass charging feature which could help combined with an 80% (or lower) cap.

I've been using the timer method too to charge to 80%. Still using my 7 years old (next month) oneplus 5t and the battery is still great.

None of that is true..... The phones have multiple chips to prevent over charging.

I have a sub 10 dollar cooler. Not the freezing type as it's just 15W but is enough to keep temps at sub 40C.

So about fast charging is charging with the 20w charger cause the Iphone’s battery to degrade faster or is it just okay as to use the 5w charger

try using them in car. you'll soon realize just how much plug/unplug you're doing. it's convenient especially when you use Google pay for drive-thru.

how do you get that 80% charge limit on your pixel phone? mine doesn't have it in the adaptive charging option
There's no such option yet in Pixel devices. There's talk that Android 15 will get an 80% limit option.
Until then you can use an app or something that alerts you when the charge level reaches 80%.

Most people with an average of 2-3 hours SOT or even less charge 80% as that will easily be enough for your daily needs. By doing this, you double the life cycles of your battery, so for example, on an iPhone, 500 cycles until 80% health becomes 1000 cycles. It seems like a no-brainer.
Also, do not charge on a non-conductive surface like a bed. I put mine on a battery-operated fan, and charging is faster; the phone stays cool, and this reduces wear even further.
Only use wireless charging and superfast charging as they were meant. Wireless charging is for small top-ups during the day, and superfast charging is for quick top-ups only. If you have money and do not need to reduce the running costs, use and abuse it as you like and buy a new battery when required, or a new phone if that is your thing.

I love my Oppo with the fast charge, easily has the best battery life and charging of any phone I have ever had and that includes both other androids and iphones. Also has the least bloatware too.
So my phone supports 100w charging and the 100W charger comes bundled with it, but I charge my phone with an 80W one that my wife has instead. I guess this will also somehow help in keeping it cooler I guess.

If you are charging for 20% to 80% you are wasting 40% power of your battery. Modern phones stop or trickle charge your battery after reaching to 100%. So without worry you must charge your battery to 100%. This will increase your battery life. Rest are all myths. Which is beneficial to mobile manufacturers.
and i still will only charge my phone with a 5v 1a charger. Its better for the battery, the slower you can charge a battery the longer it will last. Yes it takes 4 hours to charge but i only ever need to charge it when i go to bed, my battery will last a full day, even with some heavy use and i will still have 30-35% battery left at the end of the day

I had a redmi note 3 with 4000mah battery its backup got so bad in just 2.5 years that I had to charge thrice a day
then I switched to redmi k20 pro with 4000 mah battery but rarely charged it above 80 % and now 5 years later its battery still lasts me a day

Does recent smartphones have the ability to stop current from the charger from reaching the Batteries on Demand or when they're fully charged.... This is besides gaming phones which use Bypass Charging.....
All modern smartphones take just as much power from the charger (power adapter) as they need. It is the phone which determines the amount of current that is drawn from the charger. It must be as only the phone "knows" how much current the battery can accept for charging and how much current the rest of the phone (CPU, display etc.) needs. Chargers just deliver a certain voltage, 5 Volts or more if the phone requests that and the charger can deliver that. The current is always determined by the phone. So yes, the smartphone decides how much current is needed and will stop the current if it doesn't need it anymore.

Dumb battery things only happened on Apple phone. Even my Xperia xz from 2017 still had it's i original battery and run normally, while my iphone 7 for 3 battery replacement.
Sill a mystery, iphone has to the slowest charging time and bunch of charging crap and still had the worst battery life.

Silcone carbon battery do use lithium btw. Cathode is lithium while Anode is made from Silcone carbon in your case. Traditionally the anode is made from nickal magnese cobalt.
I had an oppo with 80w charging and I always noticed when I used fast charge the battery wouldn't last as long as when I used regular charging

If you're regularly gaming plugged in then it makes sense to cap at 80%. Many gaming phones also have a bypass charging feature which could help combined with an 80% (or lower) cap.
