Ace didn't care that everyone told him to not go, that Whitebeard told him this is an exception...He wasn't standing for it. So by proxy, Whitebeard told him to go. Hence Whitebeard taking blame. Since Blackbeard and Thatch were under Ace's command.
So its not just to make ace not feel guilty. WB didnt want to pursue teach out of fear of losing more family members which pushed ace into going alone. WB is saying this is my fault for not handling Teach myself
