    This is a P40F version with the Packard Merlin engine. The Allison versions had a air intake on top of the engine cowling.

    I wonder how many guys shot the runway up by mistake when intending to lower the flaps!

    There's a lot more critical things to hit on the field than the runway. A salvo of errant 1/2 inch bullets will do serious damage.

    Not too much to remember then!

    It seems that ergonomics was not a concept followed in cockpit design for the P40. The instruments are all over the place. Very interesting but imagine having to decide on the rpms with a Messerschmitt on your tail.

      I know the comment is a year old, but I reply anyway. You don't micro-manage your rpms. You use the automatic governor to lock the setting with the manifold pressure. Then you only have to worry about throttle settings to keep manifold pressure from blowing the engine during a dive. It was discussed in the video.

    Need a chute and helmet and goggles to b a "boss man" PILOT. You need the chute to bail out of that jacked up plane.... its off the ground.

    Will Smith is particularly wrong as the P-40 was designed before the war and the British were one of the first customers for it.
    Everyone is entitled to an opinion though. No matter how uniformed it may be.

    How on earth is a pilot suppose to remember all this ?.

    • @DrFreeeman
      @DrFreeeman 9 років тому +12

      AustinPetDetective It's not hard when you understand all the controls, in fact pilots were blindfolded as a part of their training and asked to name all the controls by feel before they were allowed to take off.
