Not really much of a story, just a cool video of the Collins Foundation restoration of an old B-24 into The Dragon and his Tail. Years ago I had an older, retired, Italian man living next to me. We used to chat all of the time mainly about computer stuff, but also about his service in WW2. He wanted to be a fighter pilot. But instead, they stuffed him into a B-24 as a pilot that flew in the pacific. He told me few war stories, mostly trying to avoid them. He told me of the 'Torpedo Juice' that they made themselves. He told that his preferred way into the cockpit was to climb through the nose gear. His plane was "The Dragon and his Tail" He was very proud that when the Collins Foundation restored a B-24, the first art work they used was The Dragon. He was one of the first that was taken up for a ride. Not sure if he was ever behind the wheel on that ride. Joe's gone now, I miss him.

Mad. I stood next to this thing in 2002 or so. Pease Airport in New Hampshire. They also had the nine of nine b 17 there. I still have the T-shirt of the nine of nine. I washed it today funny enough. Maybe that is why i am here.....

It's ALWAYS ALWAYS Mr. Schroder!! He NEVER needs sleep. He doesn't think about food? It appears as if Mr. Schroeder is the only railroad engineer contracted to be in all of the passenger railroad videos of days gone by! What would they do without Mr. Schroeder??

I remember these cars well growing up in the 1960's. My grandfather's summer house in West Wildwood NJ was less halfway up the street from the Pennsylvania Reading Seashore Lines track into Wildwood NJ. The RDC's passed through our neighborhood many times a day. The tracks are long gone and what track remain from Cape May and North of Cap May Courthouse are all overgrown. Several RDC's sit stranded on a siding in the Courthouse. They are gutted and covered inside with graffiti. Very sad.

Too bad for all the fallen flag railroads. The merger of Pensy and New York Central forming the Pen Central doomed both fallen flags. It became increasingly difficult for railroads after the end of the 1950. I model a fallen flag railroad, the Central of Georgia since I used to live in Georgia. CofG was purchased by Southern Rail lines in 1962, and then Southern was purchased by Norfolk Southern after acquiring Norfolk Western, forming the parent company. Cheers from eastern TN

It didn’t get maximum economy because union rules required an engineer plus a fireman. Thus a one car train needed a crew of three when you added in a conductor.

It's not enough to couple the cars together with drawbar "knuckles." The brake lines have to be connected as well. Not too difficult, but requires stepping between each pair of cars and fastening the hoses together with a twist. The brake check requires the entire trains brake system to get pressurized to first set the emergency brake chambers one each car . . . and then (via an ingenious valve system) to pu enough pressure in the line from engine-to-rear-end to then release those brakes. It's amazing how simple, complex and functional and it is not that different now vs. 80 years ago. Small differences like way more unit trains, yard air pressure (to prep the trains before or without an engine) and electronic controls. Safety, durability and efficiency are always the goal.

The Richard I. Bong Veterans Museum here in Superior has a restored P-38 on Display. Richard Bong had 40 confirmed kills and is known as the Aces of Aces. There are many stories of his flying around Superior during a visit. Some true and some have been embellished over the years. In any case he was a great flyer and had a great plane.

Greatest time to grow up, be home by dark, fishing, hunting, dirt clod wars and rock fights with the neighbor kids from down the road. Watching and hearing the steam engine train whistles in the distance wondering where they were going and the places they were seeing. When I was a kid I couldn't wait to get off the farm, now I'd give anything to go back.
