I think she was thinking of Sidney & Alexander both cutting her down. And she’s had enough. Two cuts to her heart now. She’s a strong woman though, and I do believe Alexander is “The One” neither of them are ready yet..
@ Not only that , I feel the pressure on women to marry as being the greatest way for them to support themselves and live in itself is disheartening even tho it was the way of the times.
Yes, but unfortunately, it was too late. Charlotte was too angry about having been so senselessly fired. It was tantamount to disrespect, even tho' Colbourne didn't mean it that way, it was still a big mistake on his part. And now he lives to regret it, just like his housekeeper warned him. I love that lady!
@Miriam A. ZAVALA I wonder if Alexander would've done it if he even knew Charlotte's story. Like, he was super open about his past relationship. Charlotte just said she's known betrayal and heartbreak. She didn't say, "I loved a man, but he had to leave me to marry someone else and then died." Like I think that would've been helpful information for Alexander to know.
Because in his mind this isn't happening to her again since he never even knew it happened a first time. Basically i just want them to communicate like adults and get together before the year 2023.
@Miriam A. Zavala: YES, I'm hoping they reconcile in S3 as well. And where'd Charlotte pick up this so-called fiancé anyway?--after only 2 mos.?? That was an unbelievable sneak peak.
@@alexandradombrowski4915 At beginning of ep 1, Alison talks about a neighbor farmer Ralph that their dad wants Charlotte to marry, and a proposal is expected shortly.
@@susanfirth9883 I just so desperately want to see them both finally unreservedly happy with smiles ear to ear...safe in the knowledge that they are fully accepted and loved by the other. No more misunderstandings and no more games. I need it.
@Goose Monkey ...I think he was trying to be chivalrous, as you said. I think he did see he over played his hand, and then understood how C. took it, which was not the way he meant it. These unsaid words and misunderstandings do get tedious. I understand times were different, but just a little more said would clear up so much pain, and set them on the right path.
Let's give Mr. Colbourne some credit. He married young to a woman that loved partying more than she loved him. He is obviously a family man. He's raising two children that are no blood relation to him whatsoever. As soon as he's not around she lusts after the first guy that shows her some attention even though she's married. He firmly believes that he had some responsibility for his wife's death because of what she said to her and because he didn't stay and party with her. Then Lennox adds his little jabs. He loves Charlotte so much that his fear of doing the same to her and having a similar outcome is more than he can live with. He wants her back, but can't totally commit our of that fear. He loves her enough to give her up rather than have her hurt beyond repair. I love this guy! They will get a happy ending. There was too much outcry about the first ending of Season 1. Patience. It will eventually be very rewarding.
What I would like to see happen is that Colbourne takes the girls to London. Then Eliza Campion or Parker sets her sights on him. Then either one of the girls gets sick and asks for him to send for Charlotte or Lady Susan invites Charlotte to visit her for awhile. In the end Colbourne dumps Eliza for Charlotte. YAY! LOL@@susanfirth9883
I know but I would like to see Colbourne dump her for Charlotte. GIve her some of her own, LOL They will get together. There is no other way to end this. Just can;t be any other way.
Well put, and I quite agree, especially after getting past my initial frustration. The ending will be worth the wait, and the satisfaction will be all the deeper.
Rose Williams is killing it! What an talented actress...I felt everything she was giving.... the heartbreak and the strength, the resolve to keep moving forward. They're just amazing to watch on screen.
I read an interview where he called her (affectionately) his sparring partner because together they worked really hard to get their scenes just right. Ben paid her high compliments for taking real ownership of Charlotte, the character, and for working hard to play it so that it makes sense
Couldn’t help but think of Mr Darcy when Alexander says ‘thank you for making your feelings so clear’. Definitely getting the Pride and Prejudice vibes. Hanging on the hope of both of them not being with anyone but each other.
@@susanfirth9883 Me too I think they will end up together. Alexander and Darcy do have that lack of communication skills trait. I just hope the writers keeps Charlotte's pureness. I don't want to see her dating anyone. Let her just process everything she has gone through and come out on top. I hope season 3 will be her getting back to confident Charlotte of season 1. Do you happen to know how many episodes for season 3?
Agree, however Darcy writes the long letter to Eliz immediately after she turns down his proposal. That gave her something to hang onto. In Sedition, every time Char and Colbourne butt heads, he always backed down and reconnected with her. This last time he did not and, after letting 2 months pass, just leaves with the girls on a trip. Charlotte will be long married before he returns and even hears of her marriage. Also, Char & her farmer husband would not be living in Sanditon.
Both of them are brilliant in this. It is so touching to watch. She does not hide her face the whole time with her hands when she cries like a lot of actors do. She is brave enough to show us her pain. Bravo!
I hate to see Charlotte get her heart broken again 💔 These two truly care for one another ,you can tell when they look at each other ,their eyes tells what their hearts feel .
Wow....Rose Williams is such a good actress. I'm sad and mad at the same time, mad at Alexander and sad for Charlotte. 🙁 This guy is too much work.😤🙄 Thank You Susan. 🙂🥰
I find it ironic that they each said the other was being “clear” when, in fact, neither was saying what they were actually thinking and feeling - that they wanted to be together because they were in love with each other!
I'm moved to tears every time I see that scene with Augusta - that's some very fine acting on her part! Much as I enjoyed S2 and all the story lines and the ensemble cast, we really didn't have enough time with Charlotte, Colbourne, Leonora and Augusta. In fact I figured out that Charlotte and Colbourne only had a total of approximately 30 minutes of screen time!! Now that they wrapped up so many all the storylines except theirs, I hope S3 won't be so crowded with characters and they give this story more room to breathe.
Charlotte is such a great actress! When she says, “If that is what you came here to ask” she has worded it in such a way as to leave an opening for him to express how he really feels….but he can’t bring himself to do that. So, she must conclude that she was only meant as a governess to him. 💔💔💔💔💔
I agree with you. There are 5 different stories going on within 58 minutes. Would love more Charlotte with the Colbourne family. Flora Mitchell as Leonora has been a joy to watch!
Not long into S2, it becomes clear that both Charlotte and Colbourne are surprised and thrown off kilter by their romantic attraction to each other. She and he had both sworn off love and marriage after falling in love and then being betrayed. At the end of S2, we're left wondering why exactly did Colbourne force Charlotte to leave her governess position, and why did Charlotte not allow Colbourne to finish whatever he started to say to her in the Parker home. All we do know is that she and he made a choice, and now they are both unhappy with their lives. We know what Charlotte wants, but what does Colbourne want? He's confusing us. Ah! The look on Alexander Colbourne's face when he sees Charlotte again in S3 makes it quite clear that Colbourne now knows exactly what he wants. The looming questions for S3 are-Can he still get her? If so, how? So, I am definitely looking forward to Season 3. For anyone who hasn't been able to put enough of the pieces together and is still trying to make sense of Charlotte and Colbourne's love story, here is a guide. Like Charlotte Heywood, Alexander Colbourne is a compelling character. Obviously, Colbourne is not pining for his dead wife who married him for his money, and then continued her love affair with Lennox after she married Colbourne. Marrying solely for financial security was the norm, even during the time in which Jane Austen lived. Apparently, Lucy and Lennox were genuinely in love with each other-but, unlike Colbourne, Lennox was not a wealthy man. So, she chose to marry Alexander Colbourne-which explains why Lennox told Charlotte that Colbourne stole Lucy from him. Nevertheless, Colbourne does deeply regret having spoken so harshly to Lucy when he discovered her infidelity and that she was pregnant with Lennox's child. He believes that what he said to Lucy was so damaging that it destroyed her will to live. So, he feels responsible for her death and for Leo not having a mother. Colbourne's compassionate heart and strong conscience have not allowed him to forgive himself-even after all these years. In S2 we see how compassionately Colbourne treats his horse and his dog, and how he tries to shield his daughter and his niece-and now Charlotte-from himself. Colbourne is apparently afraid of ever destroying anyone again, so he puts up barriers between himself and anyone that he loves. Charlotte helped Colbourne to begin tearing down those barriers that separate him from the people that he loves. But now Charlotte is one of those people-so we see Colbourne as he struggles with his internal conflict between his desire to have Charlotte and his desire to protect her from himself. Interestingly, it is not until Colonel Lennox tells Colbourne that Charlotte is in love with him that he realizes that she is indeed in love with him, and therefore she needs to be protected from him. Because Charlotte is so unique-she is neither meek nor submissive-Colbourne hadn't noticed the outward signs of her feelings about him. During the time that Jane Austen wrote, men who did not intend to marry often wore a signet ring (engraved with their initials) on the pinky of their left hand-just as Alexander Colbourne does. Colbourne often twists the signet ring that he wears on his left hand and appears to be thinking. My guess is that is yet another reason why he chose to dismiss Charlotte. Colbourne knows that he is in love with Charlotte, and it is obvious that he desires her. The way he kisses her makes that quite clear. After Colonel Lennox told Colbourne that Charlotte is in love with him, Colbourne realized that, as her employer she might submit to his desires because he is in a position of authority over her. Now that he knows how he feels about her and how she feels about him, allowing Charlotte to remain his subordinate would have been highly unethical. Since Colbourne-unlike Lennox-is a man of integrity, he could not bring himself to allow her to continue to be his subordinate, and therefore subject to his will. That's why he forces Charlotte to leave, even after she acknowledges that she was a willing participant during their romantic moments. Since Alexander Colbourne is a man of integrity, he knew he had to let Charlotte go-even though he obviously wants her. Colbourne went to the Parkers' home to ask her to return because Augusta begged him to do so, not because he believed that was the right thing to do. (Colbourne told Augusta that she doesn't understand-which, of course, is true. Augusta doesn't know that her uncle is in love with Charlotte and that Charlotte is in love with him.) Colbourne did not object to what Charlotte said because he knew that she made the right decision, even though she made that decision because she believes that she means nothing to him. Of course, that is not true. This is a man who clearly is deeply in love with Charlotte. When Colbourne goes to see Charlotte with the intention of asking her to return, Charlotte also makes the right decision. Sadly, at the end of Season 2, we were left with two people who are deeply in love with each other-and absolutely miserable because of the choice they had to make.
If there is a separation and Charlotte and Alexander, they do not get together, create more screen time for them the whole series of Sanditon will be gone, viewers can only take so much. Ben Lloyd Hughes best addition to this series.
I was SO hoping he was going to say "I didn't come to ask you to be my governess, I came to ask you to be my wife" but ofc they had to leave a cliffhanger for next season 😭
I know!! I wanted that line so badly after she says "if that is what you came here to ask", there's this space there and I just so wanted him to declare "no, I came here to ask you to be my wife". *sigh* I guess at the same time though, that might be a bit much for them to be hot and cold all of the time, I would rather them separate than be always tumultuous together. Plus, I think Alexander has a lot to work through.
He needed to hear that his behaviour would not be tolerated. Especially not by her and I don't think he knew what to say in return because he is so used to being in charge and Charlotte will not be controlled. I believe that this is exactly why Sidney fell in love with her and their relationship was very direct and honest from the get go. The relationship with Alexander was one sided with absolute honesty, for Alexander would flip back and forth from the beginning. I was very disappointed with him and sincerely hope that he has found himself when he next returns to Sanditon, based on the preview showing his coming to another ball or dinner gathering I hope. Charlotte I hope is not married as yet!!??

💔💔💔 now in this scene Charlotte can’t hear him! 😭😭😭 I want to hug Charlotte and tell her He brought up Augusta because he thought you would be proud! Charlotte had told him “who even listen to her in this house of silence” Alexander wanted to tell her about the great change she made in his life and he’s now even listening to Augusta’s words. That’s such a HUGE change for him! He never listened to her before, and he finally realized it. He just wanted to share that with her, but Charlotte’s so rattled because she wasn’t expecting the initial dismissal so she’s still in that room where he said “shame and regret for the feelings I had towards a governess” that she can’t hear his words at all. She won’t allow any more arrows to pierce her heart 💘 and she’s on defense. He lost her trust, and now Alexander will have to win her trust all over again (what she said when they were talking about calming Hannibal and it was similar to winning the girls over). 💔😭😭💔
I hadn't thought of that, but you're absolutely right. He was proud of himself for listening to Augusta, and it's what Charlotte wanted -- it matters to him SO much that he can't speak, and his words are all jumbled 😢 For a man who speaks so carefully and properly, his lack of clarity makes him retreat back into his shell. This scene has so much going on under the surface, and if they could only speak what they're thinking.... Maddening, but it will make their final coming together so incredible in S3 ❤️
@@susanfirth9883, you and Jules are right. If only he could bring himself to say that he feels her absence, rather than "the house" which includes him - but not the same. He leaves an open door as he exits - perhaps predicting a path of return.

It’s not over for him ( it’s not over for her too regardless to what she thinks in the moment). I think she was completely devastated in thinking that every moment they shared he only saw her as a governess. She was running his words over in her mind before he arrived and was expecting him to explain himself more clearly, but he’s so choked up over that she felt disrespected; he can’t speak and ends up thanking her in his panic. 😭😭😭💔💔💔

This is such a powerful scene, the love is palpable between them but Colbourne's miscommunication of his feelings for Charlotte and the not-so-distant memory of Sidney's death is all too much for her to bear. So Jane Austen because she stands broken-hearted yet resolved.
Alexander allowed what Lennox said to him drive his decision to break things off with Charlotte, believing her would be capable of loving Charlotte as she deserves, failing her as he did his wife. Poor Charlotte was hurt at the way Alexander had treated her not realizing what Lennox has said to Alexander. Charlotte believed he cared for her and wanted something more, but then discharges her under the pretense that the relationship was inappropriate. Then Alexander realizes he was wrong arriving at her doorstep to tell her how he really feels, and was looking to propose to Charlotte, when Charlotte interrupts, telling him she is preparing to leave town. Both had been hurt in love and both are afraid to love again, plus both are stubborn. Does Alexander know about Charlotte's previous relationship ended, since Charlotte knows about Alexander's past relationship?
I do think he still needs some healing to do. Mr Darcy became a better person when Elizabeth rejected him, but he was never inconstant when he realized his feelings.
I guess it’s possible that he loves and cares for her so much but he is afraid of disappointing her. It still feels like there is some piece missing in his story from his past which makes him very undecided about his love for Charlotte. It took a lot of guts for him to admit to Charlotte that not only did his wife have a relationship with another man but also a child. That had to be very difficult thing to confess. He truly may believe he is not good enough for her. He is so much more complex than Sydney. When he first apologized to her for inappropriate behavior I thought he wanted to make them more equal before continuing their relationship knowing that a man should not be in a relationship with an employee. His choice of words and his demeanor were very off putting to Charlotte. Poor thing she has been through too much. I think if she knew it was Lennox who made him second guess himself she could have helped him through it and they could have still been together. Lennox was really rotten to say what he said. I guess if he couldn’t have Charlotte he wanted to make sure Colbourne couldn’t either.
So, so upset. How shall I wait til 2023 for season 3. This season was the best and the interaction between Charlotte and Alexander puts the one with Sidney to shame. Don't spoil a perfectly good story without getting 2 lost souls together!

Whatever insecurities or doubts he may have had about himself Lennox only amplified them. What a cruel man. Or is there something deeper? If he was unable to provide for Lucy's emotional needs, perhaps he feels he's incapable to meet those of Charlotte. Yet, the tenderness, in moments with Charlotte, shows a man of deep caring and a willingness to try to change. When she witnesses his interactions with Hannibal and Luna, she is touched by his caring spirit. He's a complex man for sure. Even Mrs. Whitley knows so much of him, having cared for him during the years after Leo's birth and Lucy's death.
Yes--that's why Mrs. Wheatley defended him so stoutly before Charlotte attempted to criticize his behavior...she obviously understands him and knows what's good for him--she's the one who told him he'd "regret this!"
@@amakaedeaniachufusi8650 Lennox’s strategic mind in play. Lennox was in shock over discovering he has a daughter. He only said to Leo what he did because she had ambushed him, right in the heart! Leo took aim at him right with the distraction of Charlotte and Alexander’s arrival, “are you, are you my father?” He was unprepared and went with a retreat mode till he could regroup his defenses. When we see the toy soldier laying on the ground defeated that represents Lennox’s defeat in this situation. He doesn’t do defeat well. He sits down on this one and Alexander comes back standing. Alexander thanks him, but Lennox stabs him in the back with his words as Alexander is turning to leave with the Lucy/ Charlotte knife 🔪 “as you failed Lucy”. He’s a soldier and he’s going to fight even when he’s down and bleeding. I honestly don’t think we’ve seen the last of Lennox. I think he will be back. I predict he will come trying to romance Augusta to see if he can take Leo away from Alexander some how that way. I think Charlotte and Alexander are going to team up to save both Augusta from ruin and Leo from Lennox’s gasp... He's going to need to show her that she's important to him. He's going to need to prove his love for her. Words will not be enough, since it's been his words that have hurt her and has taught her to receive what he has to say with wariness, not trust.
And every other time he's shared an insight with him he's taken it under consideration and responded fruitfully. He needs to take her words to heart...and respond fruitfully! It takes him time though. I wonder what he was thinking for two months before he got in the carriage with the girls!!
@@melissajoe1964 yeah at this pt I don't think it mattered what came out of his mouth esp as he put his foot in it right at the beginning by not stating his intentions clearly. He had lost her at the last convo
I think she was afraid he was going to say come back and just be the governess. She knew that wasn’t possible. So hard for 19th century men to say what they feel. And he is especially closed off. They just needed more time together and with Lennox leaving they might have had it. He also still wears that ring on his pinkie finger. I assume this was his first wife’s wedding band. He kept putting Charlotte on that emotional roller coaster. She had to let him know that has to stop if he wants to marry her. She was right in her assessment that he was not giving her respect. Mr. Colbourne’s language and actions need to change quickly. Good for Charlotte!!!
He wants to tell her he loves her and that it was not letting their emotions get the better of them and it was real at 2:25. Two seconds of his body language and a slight shaking of his head as if to say no, it was real...and he begins to silently begin to say "I..." but the words won't come.
Ben was asked in an interview what Alexander was planning to say in that moment when he steps forward and says "I wanted to ask...". Most fans thought it was that he was going to ask her to come back as his governess (which is what Charlotte assumes before she stops him), but Ben confirmed that he was in fact going to propose. Which is good news for S3 ❤️

@@Annie-st3ie you can find it on the PBS website I believe. They have an interview with BLH and he says that at least according to him, he decided Alexander was going to propose.
@@susanfirth9883 Actually, the dialog was written to be deliberately ambiguous. Ben decided that he would play it as if Colbourne intended to propose. HOW many movies have we all watched where we're screaming if only 2 people could learn to TALK to each other?! This certainly is one of those! But, we have to remember that, especially with Alexander, he is a buttoned-up, stoic, emotionally scarred man of the 19th century...emotional honesty didn't come easily. I only assume the writers are coming from that perspective as well as having to draw this out for another season. Still, letting the COLONEL, of all people, be the impetus for Alexander's abrupt turn about just doesn't make since! There must be something else.🤔 I will say, however he manages to get her back, and I believe he does, it will have to be explosive to be believable. I hope the writers don't "jump the shark" on this storyline!
@@LG-dj9qr THAT is the answer to my question....what would make Alexander leave his new wife in London, only to sit in the country for such a long period of time that she was lonely enough to turn to another man?
@@LG-dj9qr I know all of that...very emotionally scarred child grows up to be emotionally scarred adult. Maybe I'm just getting caught up and searching for a darker meaning🤷
Plus he was young. And what examples did either he or Lucy see for what marriage should look like? Not great ones I think. There are those regency marriages when couples prefer to be apart and those where couples prefer to be together. Affection and respect (and actual invested love for each other is a big factor!) I want to tell A and C: proximity is key, keep talking, be honest and respectful, don't be afraid to challenge each other!
That is why there really is someone for everyone. His first wife was into the High Society scene and he was not. They were a mismatch from the beginning and being so young it is understandable. But his self-recrimination as to how he reacted to her unfaithful course beats him down. Whatever Lennox was making reference to (what Colbourne couldn't provide Lucy) is still an unknown. Was it more than an incapability to be there for her emotionally or something else? He needs love, deserves it even. I really want to see a more emotionally balanced Colbourne in Season 3. It is too sad to see him deny himself of real love...both to give and to receive!
I still think he has too much to deal with personally before he can be what she needs but I do think that if she hadn’t cut him off at Trafalgar House (though it was understandable), he would have verbalized some of his feelings. Ah well...the deluge is coming next season. 😉
In an interview, Ben said that Alexander's intention when he stepped forward and said, "And I want to ask you...." was TO PROPOSE ❤️ Be still my heart. And Charlotte? Next time, DON'T INTERRUPT, GIRL! 😂 😂
It just occurred to me that this is exactly what Charlotte said -- you have to forgive yourself or the past will thwart the future. Guess he's just not there yet.
Bullseye 🎯 first literally and sadly now figuratively. Remember what Arthur said to Tom...Lennox is a strategist and a manipulator and it seems he got to Colburne again!
Was he going riding to mope? He had some kind of plan bringing the horse out of the barn. Augusta certainly redirects him. (I hope we hear more accurate insights from her!) And poor Colbourne just can't clearly speak the truth. He just can't be as articulate as she needs him to be. Bound by his fear, regrets, anxiety. They would do well to speak frankly with each. I wish I heard "I miss you. I'm afraid. I did everything wrong." Looking forward to those meaningful truth sharing conversations in the next season! (And writing letters wouldn't be a bad idea!!) I forget Austen is NOT writing in 2022 (or the spirit of her.) Patience. They will sort this out. I certainly hope there's lots of attention to each of them becoming aware of how much they mean to each other...and what they fruitfully do about it! AND...I've noticed as I've rewatched all their scenes together that he considers everything she tells him, and makes an adjustment. A larger adjustment is warranted now. It will take him some time to consider her words, which were truthful, to valiantly try again...the right way. It's inevitable. Like magnets and gravity. Colbourne needs to get it together on multi-levels (tell her the truth, overcome his fears, forgive himself). I also look forward to seeing how she will be constantly on his mind. The girls will reflect her lasting impact. It will be unavoidable. There are three people who love Charlotte here. This is hopeful!
Yes maybe Colbourne needs time to right his relationships with his daughter and niece (and properly forgive himself) before he makes things right with Charlotte. Maybe he felt things were moving too fast. Maybe he really wants a proper courting time with Charlotte. They still barely know each other. Their time together always seems to involve the girls not much alone time. Letter writing would be wonderful for them.
@@juliegarnai7362 Agree, but thought that if he wanted proper courting time without the Master/staff dynamic, then he did not communicate that to her. Every other time she called him out, like for the apology, Colbourne relented, softened, and acknowledged his emotional clumsiness. At the Parker house, Charlotte only said she would not work as his governess anymore. He could have still reached out to her at her parents' farm if he wanted to court her. IMO two months is a long time for him to not reach out, especially with the gulf of hurt that lays between them.
@@elisabethlavery4473 I'm trying to estimate how long she may have actually worked there. At most, maybe two months, a good portion of the summer season. That is true where would he really go when he bought the horse out and remember when they first met she left and he ride his horse to find her to tell her she got the job.
Awe Alexander, I think he was already going to go after Charlotte before Augusta said anything. I think when he mentions Augusta it was just a way to lighten the emotions. Him saying the house feels her absents really means him. Poor thing, he's an introvert who blew up once at his wife Lucy now he doesn't trust himself to speak. In season 3 we are probably going to see that Alexander really loves Charlotte and possibly she is his true love, and he will do what needs to be done to be with her.
Yes! I agree with you on all points! For years emotionally he has been “ underwater” but he now is slowly swimming to the surface. And he did mean himself when he says “the house” feels your absence. There was already an empty hole with her gone.He was explaining Augusta’s anger so Charlotte would see the need because he knows Charlotte & the girls have a relationship. On his behalf, he has said he had all but lost whatever social graces he felt he had. He is most definitely an introvert. I still go back to their encounter at the camp with Lennox when they went to get Leo & Colbourne asks Charlotte to take Leo home… he very sweetly takes Charlotte’s hand, rubs her fingers, and has a very sweet loving expression towards her that spoke volumes! Deep in his heart he trusts her!❤️🌹❤️
@@pamelastory6046 exactly, hopefully Charlotte will remember that and that will soften her heart. I think a part of the reason he is leaving Sanditon after two months is because he sees Charlotte everywhere in that house. Did Lucy even make it to the house? I really want to see them as a couple for most of the episodes in season 3 and not just in the last episode.
@@michelle1me Yes! …What a good question- did Lucy ever make it back to the house? I wonder if we will find out… I also want to see a loving relationship built through season 3 so we can experience the happiness through their eyes( I think Ms. Austen would approve😉). I hope season 3 has 8 episodes!🥰
@@michelle1me I am so with you! We need them blissfully happy more than just the last 2 minutes of the last episode. Think how amazing that kiss will be when all their walls are finally down! I can’t wait! He needs to say “I love you” straight out instead of speaking through everyone and everything else. He feels it now. He just can’t say it.
No Charlotte, that's not what I came to ask. Why didn't he shake off her objection and tell her how he felt smh. That was the time, but he is clearly not ready.
It would be really nice if they would stop writing heartbreaking endings for Charlotte. Jane Austen would not approve. This show could have gone a few seasons just based off the interesting characters, no need for the Charlotte heartbreak to keep the show going.
I was just sick, how this ended, can’t wait to see them work it out together, if not I will not binge on this series ever again. I did before that ending of season 2. Charlotte so heartbroken and Alexander to hung up on this Lucy, hardly worth all this considering what Lucy did in that marriage.
Right. The writers think they have to keep matching Charlotte up with the next Tom, Dick, and Harry to keep our interest. Don't they know we'd just love to see an honest love grow and show stability as well as passion? It's all about ratings for them. And of course, if the actor leaves, like Sidney's actor did, they have to make something up. But I agree, this was too hard to watch...those two girls needed to be a family again, and Charlotte was perfect for them. I'm gonna be grieving this....
When Charlotte made that speech about how she too had misunderstood her feelings for a "kind of affection...but couldn't feel such tenderness for someone who showed me so little respect," it seemed to me that she just wanted to hurt Mr. Colbourne as much as he'd hurt her. And then by seeing the arrow hit home and his pained reaction she had the confirmation that he did love her. If she was just angry and thought he was a jerk, she wouldn't have cried when he left. When he hesitated at the door and almost looked like he would turn around, I was literally screaming at him to go back. In my fan fiction (in my head, not written down) he does hear her burst into tears and goes back to her, takes her in his arms and says "Please don't cry, Charlotte. You'll break my heart." After a few moments of melting into his arms, she pushes him away and demands to know what Col. Lennox had said to him, since everything was fine between them until that point. Whereupon he confesses everything. Then Charlotte points out that history wouldn't repeat itself with her because she was an entirely different kind of person than Lucy. I imagine her saying something like, "Do you really think, if my handsome husband asked me to return to my beautiful home, on our magnificent estate, by the charming seashore, that I would say 'No, I want to stay here among these virtual strangers, spending your money on champagne, concerts, garden parties, and fancy dresses.' Or perhaps you worry that you'll revert to your formerly sullen, solitary ways. Do you think I couldn't tease, cajole, or even scold you into a better humor, like I just did in a matter of a few weeks?" She scolds some more, he apologizes again, and she finally says she'll think about it. She has a headache and wants to go lie down. "I'm sure you can show yourself out." There's your cliff hanger, without the ridiculous engagement to Ralph Starling. I think my version would have given us girls a little more hope.
I think what she meant by him showing her little respect is because he says that they shouldn’t have kissed her those two times and that he took advantage of her because he’s her employer. She kissed him right back but he doesn’t consider that at all. It shows that he thinks little of her ability to decide for herself how she feels about him and who she wants to kiss. He also insinuates that he thinks of her only as an employee and nothing more which is also insulting to Charlotte since she thought Xander had feelings for her beyond an employee/employer relationship. It’s quite crushing to the heart when you think about it.
Incredibly frustrated that we end up in the same situation YET AGAIN as at the end of season one. Charlotte yet again being let down by a man. SMH- Like WTF.
and which regrettable circumstances are those? The ones when they kissed and began to dream of their future with his girls...or the part when he panicked, let fear rule the day, and lied to her? I know the answer of course. But the poor guys can't be CLEAR to save his life right now:(
If he had started with an apology for what he said rather than “the circumstances” he would’ve fared better. If he had said he would miss her or that he did miss her, that too would’ve made a difference. If he’d chosen to explain why he said what he said from the very beginning, it would’ve helped her understand his point of view. If he had said that he came of his own free will, that would also have made a difference. And if he hadn’t started with “the house feels your absence” he would’ve had a shot. All these reasons combined are why Charlotte ultimately chose to stop his explanation. If the first words out of his mouth are merely apologizing for the circumstance and not his actual words, basically admitting he didn’t want to ask her to come back, and that the house misses him, then what else is left to hear? With every word Xander speaks, he wounds her even more. Her heart is breaking and bleeding in front of him and these are the words he chooses to use? No, she shouldn’t have to continue to let him hurt her even more. I hurt for her but I really hurt for Augusta and Leo because they have absolutely no idea why she’s gone.
I agree. Some people are blaming Alexander for all of this, but the truth is, these are two proud and stubborn people. Neither of them backs down easily. They both had chances to acknowledge that they were hurting, and to force the other into speaking the truth ❤️
@@rosepourpre7913 Yeah! He loves her and is scared of hurting her. And she should've picked up on that! It's not like Sydney didn't have his moments of being disrespectful and she forgave him. Ughhhh I can't wait a year 😭😭😭
Season 3...Hopefully They will likely get together and become Husband and Wife..Hope Gorgeiana find her Mother and she is not after her inheritance money too..Hope Arthur courts her..She likes him and he is a good man...
Someone please tell me that he will still be in season 3. I can't take a repeat of Sydney's character. Gosh, this means waiting a year to find out what happens. I'm not okay.
ABSOLUTELY Ben Lloyd-Hughes is in S3, and there have already been interviews talking about how he and Rose work so well together in the ultimate story. I just read a beautiful one where she talks about how wonderful it was on S3 to spend time in the stables and riding horses together. They are the forever love of this series. ❤️❤️
I’m curious what others think. I’m not certain that he was going to propose to her but after she says their emotions got the best of them, he shakes his head and mouths something that looks like “I” Was he going to say I love you? Then he stops bc she says she was wrong about loving him? It's at about 2:27
BLH says that the writers purposefully left it ambiguous but that he decided personally (and I think it comes across in the way he plays it) that AC was going to propose before Charlotte cuts him off. Then I think what really clinches his decision not to is when she says “I couldn’t have such tender feelings for a man who showed me so little respect” you can tell that those words cut him deep by his immediate reaction. His mouth clamps shut, he swallows hard, and you can see the incredible pain in his eyes. I think those words are confirmation to him that he hurts everything he loves and is not worthy of CH. So even though she leaves him with an opening when she says “I can’t be your governess, IF THAT IS WHAT YOU CAME HERE TO ASK” he can’t take the opening anymore because his worst fears have just been confirmed. I think In S3 we will see a Colbourne who is trying to live the way he thinks CH would want him to in regards to the girls and that even though he has no chance with her because of her “engagement” he will take some big behind the scenes actions to show that he respects her. I think he is going to get his brother Sam Colbourne to help Georgiana secure her inheritance and to do it in such a way that it would remain hers even if she marries (that way she knows any man interested in her is in it for her alone. I’m also guessing that either Otis returns or Sam Colbourne becomes a love interest for Georgiana). I think that AC and CH will have many encounters, but that while she’s engaged to Ralph, AC will never voice his feelings for her but will definitely show in his actions and behavior that her influence and words have changed him profoundly. Then, whenever and however the engagement dissolves (because we all know it will), AC will finally have the eloquent speech he has never been able to manage and basically have his Darcy moment when he says “I did it all for you” and we get our HEA! I have no doubts that the HEA will happen, just dying to have to wait a year!
@@Mandyporter3 I agree with everything you said. I am hoping he’s a little more overt about his feelings for her early on though. I want him to be appropriate, but he needs to apologize convincingly, tell her how he feels, and show her he’s willing to fight for her. Otherwise, CH would have no reason to break her engagement. My other hopes for S3, that Sam Colbourne is a good guy, and he has a good relationship with AC. Maybe he can shed some light on the Colbourne family’s history for Charlotte. I do think AC will help Georgiana, maybe help Tom with Sanditon, perhaps funding Arthur’s theater?
@@Ruby-hg8vl Yes! I agree. I think he will apologize early on and even make an effort to be more open and communicative on a platonic level-more of the kindness and gentleness we have seen glimpses of-hopefully even some of the humor (I think AC really does have a great dry wit when he lets it out). I think there needs to be space for forgiving and coming to build that friendship again before they come back together romantically.
I wonder if we will learn about Alexander Colbourne mother. No mention of her. Also, what happened to his father & brother? Ms. Wheatley's words to Charlotte ring in my mind..."it's more to Mr. Alexander Colbourne than you know."
Some of the Sanditon sleuths have zoomed in on a photo of S3 costumes, and one of them has a note that says "Samuel Colbourne" so we are expecting Alexander's brother to make an appearance in S3 ❤️ And we don't know how his parents died. More layers to this very layered and intriguing character ❤️
@@susanfirth9883 And Ben said that he and the Lennox actor receive major backstories to read, lots beneath the surface. I'm remembering Mrs. W's words too. There is far more that we don't know than we do. Ben said somewhere that Colbourne's got lots of layers to peal away...with Charlotte's help!
So glad you bring this up I am asking these same questions we need more of his background to understand his fears and I think Mrs Wheatley knowes all of the missing pieces also I am hoping she has answers for Georgiana I think there is a connection there as well
We’re Related! I’m still trying to recuperate from these events in Sanditon S2E6 and to get my life back, so I was doing some work on my family tree today and I was stunned to find a possible (still not confirmed by genealogical standards) 5th great-grandmother of mine named Elizabeth Heywood, born about 1750….I just can’t get away from Sanditon.
And you know my next thought is that you're also a Colbourne far back in your family tree, because that's definitely who she married and had MANY children with 😂 😂 Congratulations on your GORGEOUS genes! 🥰
"The house feels your absence already." What the heck?!!! Should have said, "I feel your absence already, please forgive me for being an idiot. Please agree to be my wife." He blew it but alas, he needs to grow more and miss her deeply. 😮
No. Sidney and Charlotte were in the office. If you recall from the first episode they showed Charlotte almost reliving that moment as she walked into the house then into the office and remembered the last words Sidney spoke to her there.
Interesting watching Colbourne spinning the ring on his left hand in several scenes. I'm thinking it's a monogrammed initial ring of his late wife, Lucy. Perhaps when the ring comes off he'll let go of his past and will be ready to move on from Lucy to "forge a new path" in life. Hummm ... time will tell! Can't wait!!
@jl su I think it’s a set up to make you think 🤔 he’s going to ask for her hand in marriage. It’s so we understand a proposal is on his mind, he was going to ask for her hand in marriage. He fidgets with the ring because it’s a calming, soothing jester of his. He does it at the garden party too when he’s nervous, uncomfortable, feels out of place. 🌊🎩👒🎯💙💗
During the time that Jane Austen lived and wrote, the late 18th and early 19th century, English gentlemen frequently wore a signet ring (like the one Alexander wears) on the pinky finger of their left hand to indicate that they did not intend to marry. While I am guessing that is the intended significance Sanditon's writers expect the audience to attach to Alexander's signet ring, I should also point out that this particular accessory also carried enormous cultural and historical significance as well. "Traditionally, signet rings were worn on the pinky finger and used by gentlemen, particularly gentlemen involved with business or politics, as a seal to sign important documents. Engraved with the wearers family crest, the signet ring would be dipped into hot wax before being used to print a signature."
@jl su One more thing-men definitely did not wear signet rings with their wife's initials on them. That would have been unthinkable! During that period in history, the status of women was beneath the status of men. So, doing such a thing would have lowered his status in the eyes of other men. Signet rings and the engraving on them carried a significant amount of social importance. As a member of the landed gentry, Alexander Colbourne's signet ring would either have his family's crest or his initials emblazoned on it.
He had absolutely no choice but to leave as she told him that she cannot have tender feelings for a man who treats her with so little respect and that she will not come back as a governess either. I can understand her though. What I'm wondering is what did she mean with little respect, that he kissed her as an employer or that he fired her?
The fact he kissed her passionately, learned that she already dealt with heartache and betrayal and then tells her he regrets kissing her and ends by firing her. He did treat her with disrespect, especially back then when kisses meant a lot more than today. She was obviously crushed and just wanted to get away from him. If he had immediately apologized, admitted he was an idiot and professed his love, things may have been different. No one wants to hear that the "house misses your presence." 😂
He's gonna have to try hard to win her back after breaking her heart like that. They should bring Stringer back for some real competition too. It's too obvious Charlotte isn't really in love with her fiance.
Okay....putting Charlotte and Alexander aside for a sec, what's the deal with Georgiana and Charles? Her mother is still living?! But where is he? I'm sensing he's out of the picture by this point?!
@@susanfirth9883 I wonder, Susan , if any of the cast or writers read these you tube channels … yours is wonderful & so are a few others…they would be insightful, entertaining & I am certain they would learn much about their audience!!!🥰
I was just saying this: Charlotte is the main character, and the show isn't named "Willingdon." 😂 She will be back on the cliffs in Sanditon with Alexander before we know it 🥰
That’s right, after the bungling of Charlotte and Alexander resulting in they both leaving broken-hearted, back to square 1, bringing in Ralph the farmer, Please! why not Just Quit Sanditon now!! no 3rd season. . I know it’s harsh but that’s how it feels.
That is one seriously emotionally constipated man. I'd be kicking him to the curb too. If he's this bad during the courtship phase, imagine what he'd be like as a husband when the drive to please isn't nearly as strong.
The way I see it, the glimpses of feeling we see in him is Charlotte’s slow chipping away at a dam of emotion that he has bottled up for far too long. Once that fully breaks, I think he will be an amazing husband!
"Enough," and with that she closed off her heart again. She is such an emotive actress you can feel the pain you see in her face.
She is SUCH a good actress-- she continually impresses me!
That "enough" broke my heart! Watching her heart break was awful.
@@Lorgayle1 She's grown as a woman and can't take being hurt anymore.
I think she was thinking of Sidney & Alexander both cutting her down. And she’s had enough. Two cuts to her heart now. She’s a strong woman though, and I do believe Alexander is “The One” neither of them are ready yet..
@ Not only that , I feel the pressure on women to marry as being the greatest way for them to support themselves and live in itself is disheartening even tho it was the way of the times.
love Augusta standing up to her uncle and speaking her mind!

@@skiddledede8885 So true!!! They just need to TALK! But of course they’ll suffer for a long time first. 😖
YES YES AND YES! 🥰🥰🥰 Thank you, and I think everything you said is 100% true ❤️
What I would like to see happen is that Colbourne takes the girls to London. Then Eliza Campion or Parker sets her sights on him. Couldn’t help but think of Mr Darcy when Alexander says ‘thank you for making your feelings so clear’. Definitely getting the Pride and Prejudice vibes. Hanging on the hope of both of them not being with anyone but each other.
So many parallels with Darcy and Elizabeth. I have no doubt that these two will be together in S3 🥰

I love you comments
I agree there are too many characters and not enough time to give them all room to develop their stories!
Really like her ‼️‼️❣️
I hope that Charlotte will change her mind to fall again with Colbourne and hope he comes back .
An interesting analysis.

I guess at the same time though, that might be a bit much for them to be hot and cold all of the time, I would rather them separate than be always tumultuous together.

Not me yelling “TELL HER!” after Charlotte says she can’t be his governess. Boy, this season has been a rollercoaster that I just want to get off of.
“Enough!” Charlotte is so strong but weary of heartbreak. Tears my heart, too.
Such a heartbreaking scene, major kudos to both of them! I am keeping my fingers crossed for them in season 3.
💔💔💔 now in this scene Charlotte can’t hear him! 😭😭😭
I want to hug Charlotte and tell her
He brought up Augusta because he thought you would be proud!

@@blackbirdhill3417 I noticed that too!! Charlotte closes the door when she leaves his house but he leaves the door open. 😭😭😭💔💔💔
Wow, did not think of that either. Good observation and insight! Thank you for that!
Wow, this has been an emotional roller coaster, the high of the kiss at the end of episode 5, and then the gut wrenching ending in episode 6 ending. I thought I was a solid team Sydney, but dang, the chemistry with AC is swoon worthy. I think they will reunite in Season 3, they better, and I’m hoping for something epic like a Captain Wentworth type letter in Persuasion. One of my all time favorite books.

Absolutely 100% yes
Stubborn indeed!
@@LG-dj9qr AGREED! That's why I say he better have a reason beyond being previously hurt to make up for this...just whishy washy!

@@susanfirth9883 I wish Sanditon would never end. I would love to see ongoing seasons letting all the characters develop over time. Like Poldark or Downtown Abbey. I just love all of the characters in Sanditon...even Edward and Esther...gotta have them too!
Lennox is classic “If I can’t be happy, no one gets to be happy either”

I think she was afraid he was going to say come back and just be the governess. She knew that wasn’t possible. So hard for 19th century men to say what they feel. And he is especially closed off.
Hi Susan, I’m so glad the mystery is solved! I’ve been wondering what he wanted to ask. Where did you find that interview? I have not seen this one yet, despite searching online compulsively for any news or new insights about what’s to come 🙂
@@Annie-st3ie you can find it on the PBS website I believe.

I'm beginning to think the writers of #Sanditon2 is revenging us for wanting a happy ending 😠😭
@Dillards Shopper Does this mean we get it sooner than next year?!
Omg....truth!! I couldn't believe this!! I was wrecked!!
@@amybishop1666 Yup! Done. and BLH is still Colbourne!! (Be still my heart!)
Poor Charlotte!!
Do you think I couldn't tease, cajole, or even scold you into a better humor, like I just did in a matter of a few weeks?"
She scolds some more, he apologizes again, and she finally says she'll think about it. She has a headache and wants to go lie down. "I'm sure you can show yourself out."
There's your cliff hanger, without the ridiculous engagement to Ralph Starling.
But the poor guys can't be CLEAR to save his life right now:(
I feel so bad for Georgiana. Charlotte wasn't really there for her as a friend throughout the whole season. I understand why, but still.
And frankly, I think Charlotte would've been able to pick up on the fact that Alexander changed only after speaking with Lennox.
I agree. Some people are blaming Alexander for all of this, but the truth is, these are two proud and stubborn people. Neither of them backs down easily. They both had chances to acknowledge that they were hurting, and to force the other into speaking the truth ❤️

It just goes to show you that Alexander is not ready. If he is that easily swayed by Lennox, he is still emotionally compromised and needs to heal.
After those 2 passionate kisses 💋 Colbourn needs to call her Charlotte.
I completely agree!!! I cannot wait until he calls her Charlotte. 🥰 That will speak volumes.
Not once in 3 seasons did she or he ever call each other by their Christian names. Mmm?
Season 3...Hopefully They will likely get together and become Husband and Wife..Hope Gorgeiana find her Mother and she is not after her inheritance money too..Hope Arthur courts her..She likes him and he is a good man...
Wouldn't it be something if Arthur and Ms. Hankins get together? 🤔
@@susanfirth9883 you are my new best friend. Thank you for consoling me with this information 😭
@@susanfirth9883 I love that you mention references to other interviews....now I'm on the hunt for them! Thank you. You are now my best friend!
Yes I can not wait for season 3 for next year.
Everyone here understands 😭😭😭
@@susanfirth9883 Thanks for info.
So glad you bring this up I am asking these same questions we need more of his background to understand his fears and I think Mrs Wheatley knowes all of the missing pieces also I am hoping she has answers for Georgiana I think there is a connection there as well
@@pamelarsawa4734 Regarding Ms. Wheatley, I'm intrigued about her as well.
Love this season, but why only 6 episodes!!
I really like Augusta ‼️‼️‼️
We’re Related! I’m still trying to recuperate from these events in Sanditon S2E6 and to get my life back, so I was doing some work on my family tree today and I was stunned to find a possible (still not confirmed by genealogical standards) 5th great-grandmother of mine named Elizabeth Heywood, born about 1750….I just can’t get away from Sanditon.
And you know my next thought is that you're also a Colbourne far back in your family tree, because that's definitely who she married and had MANY children with 😂 😂 Congratulations on your GORGEOUS genes! 🥰
@@susanfirth9883 More chuckling here, but no Colbournes in my family tree......yet.
Wonder what he wanted to ask her.
"The house feels your absence already." What the heck?!!! Should have said, "I feel your absence already, please forgive me for being an idiot. Please agree to be my wife." He blew it but alas, he needs to grow more and miss her deeply. 😮
Aren’t Colbourne and Charlotte standing in the same spot where Sidney and Charlotte stood when he told her that he was engaged to Eliza? 😔
Oh wow, I hadn’t thought of that. But I think you may be right 😬
Can't wait!!
can't wait
Well shit 😐 ughhhhhhhhhhh
I second that.😒 This is pissing me off!
Amen sister!
THAT sums it up - but I'm convinced it will work out in S3 - it has to or there will be a revolt!!!! LOL The waiting is torture.
What were you thinking I should kiss this goodbye 😮😮😮
I do wonder how much Charlotte told Mary and Georgiana.
Tell him Augusta❤❤❤❤
It was disappointing to end season 2 that way. I sure hope Charlotte doesn't go through with marrying the farmer.
She won’t marry Ralph
He's gonna have to try hard to win her back after breaking her heart like that. They should bring Stringer back for some real competition too. It's too obvious Charlotte isn't really in love with her fiance.
Okay....putting Charlotte and Alexander aside for a sec, what's the deal with Georgiana and Charles? Her mother is still living?! But where is he? I'm sensing he's out of the picture by this point?!
Working on those scenes now. ❤️
This was my question too since I haven't been able to watch epi 6 yet.
@@susanfirth9883 I wonder, Susan , if any of the cast or writers read these you tube channels … yours is wonderful & so are a few others…they would be insightful, entertaining & I am certain they would learn much about their audience!!!🥰

If charlotte has Married Ralph . I suppose then there is no reason for sandition 3
@@franceshadden4062 I believe season 3 will be the payoff and the best yet!
what if his wife is still alive?
That is one seriously emotionally constipated man. I'd be kicking him to the curb too. If he's this bad during the courtship phase, imagine what he'd be like as a husband when the drive to please isn't nearly as strong.
The way I see it, the glimpses of feeling we see in him is Charlotte’s slow chipping away at a dam of emotion that he has bottled up for far too long. Once that fully breaks, I think he will be an amazing husband!
@Susan Firth What think you?🙂
I agree with you Rachel ❤️
